I messed mine up and haven't got a new one because I didn't think it was a big deal. I have a trident Cyclops case. Would you guys recommend me getting a screen protector
Sent from my HTC Inspire 4G using xda premium
Yes, they do help.
Though the 'Gorilla Glass' screen on our phone is resistant to chips and scratches, that doesn't mean degradation doesn't occur over time. The purpose of scratch-resistant screens like ours is that the effects are minimized, but it still does occur through small impacts, keys in a pocket, grit on fingers, and so on. Adding a screen protector offers a significant extra level of protection.
Have a look at this thread before you install your next screen shield.

yes...
im not sure what more you wanted. i personally dont use one but i only use the phoen for my 2yr contract anyways and then it just gets pawned to a friend lol
Agree with BillTheCat
It definitely helps. Even if you do keep it for two years (like most people). If it looks like crap no is going to want it or your going to get less for it. Plus they are what $2 including shipping? Definitely worth the money.
I bought a zagg shield when I got my Inspire, it served its purpose (rather it needed to or not with the gorilla glass). But it eventually collected so much dirt+dust I decided to take it off. I never seen such a beautiful display before on my phone! It was clearer, and the colors were more vibrant. Plus the screen is a lot more "smooth" and a tad bit more responsive without the protector on. Perhaps other brands are better, but I've been screen protector free for about 3 months now without any issues! (Knocks on wood!)
I bought a 2 pack from ATT corporate store that is grease resistant. Helps tons at keeping face oils off screen, or at least 90% less than without. That's the only reason I use them. Being from ATT, the 2pack was a little pricy, but since I'm still on the first one from November 2011, $12 was doable.
Rooted Inspire with the wicked CoreDroidHD v9.3!
Definitely agree with the screen protector. I have an anti-glare, smudge resistant protector I found on Amazon for like $4 for 5. While it does hinder the vibrancy of colors on the device, the colors still look nice.
Little OT, does anyone's power button begin to recede into the housing?

I also bought the ATT 2 pack for like 15USD and have used it since the beginning... Its all scratched up, so i can tell that without it my screen would have been shot by now.
i've been having the same screen protector since around the release date in feb. still works like a charm
Idk if screen protectors works..my friends phone had invisible shield on and accidentallu dropped it from a short distance and his whole screen cracked and display doesn't work anymore( sucks for him, he's going back to the old school phones)

A thin piece of plastic (screen protectors) don't prevent the screen from shattering from a fall, just scratches in the screen, which the Gorilla glass does perfectly without distorting the color/hindering the screen sensitivity.
A case is made to absorb some of the impact force that would normally shatter the screen.

I suppose it's a technicality, but really cases don't 'absorb' force nearly as much as they 'distribute it'. That is, generally there are two types of shock distribution. The first is 'over time' and the second is 'over a larger surface area'.
Your car's suspension work 'over time' (that is instead of ALL of the force being transmitted fom the wheel to the frame to you over less than a thousandth of a second, the force is instead spread over a tenth to hundredth of a second) it whereas a hard hat works 'over a larger surface area' (instead of the 2x4 hitting you on edge with 500psi over the area of impact, it is distributed over a larger area reducing the pressure to 50psi).
The same goes for screen protectors. If you have the 'soft' ones that are as flexible as (say) scotch tape, then there is not much distributive quality to the screen protector in prevention of shattering. A 'hard' screen protector such as the (e.g.) Seido screen protectors would at least assist in prevention of screen shattering *SOME*.
The the actual amount of protection is likely minimal.
To actually get a reliable, tested answer, a large number of phones and screen protectors would have to be subjected to abuse in a standardized way... Stories of "this guys' phone survived with (out) a screen through this or broke because of that are pretty much meaningless. This is simply because there are imperfections in any manufactured screen (making some more likely to shatter than others) AND abuse causes microfractures over time and eventually they lead up to a 'straw' breaking the camel's back.
What we don't know in most of these stories about how a phone with a screen protector or case was dropped and broke ANYWAY is... how many times was the phone dropped before that (or other abuse)?
Now keep in mind that I had neither case nor screen protection on my last smart phone for it's entire two year life. And no case for the last 9 months on my inspire (TPU case is actually usable and it cost all of 1.60 delivered).
Would a screen protector (or case?) have made a difference for me? No. Why? Cause my phone didn't break*!
BUT if it HAD broke, I'd be wondering if it would have survived if it had a case or screen protector.
So, YES screen protectors (the rigid plastic type) WILL make a difference, but is it enough of a difference to justify using them? Who knows. If you're going to go without a screen protector... at least Gorilla Glass has your back on this phone.
Wul
*Keep in mind that I am careful with my phone and don't work in an environment (night stocking, construction, whatever) that is abusive. My phone always gets a pocket to itself (right front).

Is it just me or is buying a screen protector for a phone that has already has Gorilla Glass just a marketing ploy for company's to make $$$ from us? I mean unless
A) You work outdoors and need glare protection
B) You work somewhere where you need privacy protection
C) You work somewhere where your phone would be subjected to circumstances where its likely to get DEEP scratches ie. Construction
Whats the real point of the protector other then dampening sensitivity and attracting screen prints. Am I missing something? Chime in.
id love to show you why having a screen protector is a good thing. now i dont fit into your a, b and c choices. i use my phone casually everyday.
i had an iphone4 before my inspire. well one day while i was in my car the phone was on my lap. while moving, the phone fell between the seats. stupid me not thinking, i moved my seats to try and get it out. while moving it i heard a very loud scratch and pop. my heart dropped lol. the screen protector saved my phone. not a scratch was on the screen.

I dropped my phone on asphalt the other day, and there was a nasty scratch on the screen protector and I thought that for sure the screen itself was scratched as well, but lo and behold, after peeling it off not a thing!
It's worth the peace of mind.
where has it been stated that the Inspire has Gorilla glass?
http://www.corninggorillaglass.com/featured-products
It states the Inspire 4G and Desire HD...I dont think the other two that post realize that I was refering to phones that have Gorilla glass. If you have a iPhone I cant help you there...
Iphone 4 has gorilla glass
Does it? Corning doesn't state iPhone or even apple on their website.
The only reason I brought this up is because I had a case-mate anti-glare protector on my screen. I finally got annoyed last night with the washed out colors and took it off and man...its been a day and night difference. The phones so much more responsive. I started researching the display and found out that it has the Gorilla Glass.
For what it's worth on this matter, I pay $4 for phone ins. if I get a scratch I cant live with, well...I'll turn it in as an ins. claim
This is a great topic. I wish there was more info from the manufacturers about this. I want to protect my phone but if the GGlass is sufficient I would much rather not get the frigin fingerprints all over my screen cover. Any more opinions about this, folks?
I'm pretty much the same as the rest - I had a protector on until I learned it had Gorillas Glass, then I took it off. The phone is MUCH more enjoyable without. Plus, I have the insurance as well. I might as well enjoy my phone the way it was made to be enjoyed (same reason I've decided to leave the Commuter case off it as well).
I do have a commuter case, but I stopped using the protectors and I love looking at my display now. Its gorgeous! I have insurance as well, I guess time will tell if gorilla glass can stand up to its name.
quite dissapointed. my phone got nicked very easily with this, "Gorilla Glass." oh well, 2 months with one tiny scratch is no big deal. if it was deep enough I would just return it
Everything I've seen the Inspire does NOT have Gorilla Glass. I asked on HTC's Facebook page and they said it was made of strong durable glass. I asked specifically if it had Gorilla Glass and they said no.
Anyone willing to test it with there's and post a video?
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA Premium App
I read that it has Gorilla Glass at Corning's website. However, I am not going to test it. I use an Invisible Shield that I scored for free (it's for the Thunderbolt and fits almost perfectly). I don't notice the imperfection because I have the OtterBox Defender. I guess it is a little bit easier to press stuff without the screen protector, but I had 4 resistive touchscreens until this device brought me a capacitive. If you think the screen protector makes a night and day difference coming from resistive with a screen protector to capacitive with a screen protector...
I don't understand why people keep doubting that it has Gorilla Glass...Corning posted it on their official devices list.
Yeah, I just don't get that either. HTC has apparently never admitted that any of their phones has Gorilla Glass. Why should this be different? I don't doubt Corning -- they're the ones who make the stuff, for goodness sake.
My theory? I think HTC doesn't want to admit it because they think it'll make people think they can do all kinds of stupid things with their phones. HTC thinks people will blame them when phones start breaking and people go "But you told me it had Gorilla Glass!" as if Gorilla Glass means indestructible.
Gorilla Glass =/= Titanium
HTC might not be mentioning that is uses Gorilla Glass because of the iPhone 4 glass breakage issues reported in the press last year.

And here's where the public is misled by the media manipulation of statistics and headlines on everything from smoking to gun ownership.
SquareTrade actually found that 3.9% of iPhone 4s suffered broken glass in the first four months, in contrast to 2.1% with the iPhone 3GS. Sounds a lot less dramatic doesn’t it?

For those of you who are math challenged, the change from 2.1 to 3.9 is an 85% difference, not surprising given that the iPhone 4 has 2 sides with glass, as opposed to just one, therefore one could argue there's been an actual decrease given that there's been a 100% increase in the probability. But you're still dealing with single-digit percentages.

Yes I totally agree. That's why I said "reported in the press". I had an iPhone 4 up until a couple of weeks ago (gave it to my wife) and haven't had a lick of problems with any glass issues. And I've dropped it a few times on pavement from about 3 feet up (it was in a Speck PixelSkin HD case which isn't a particularly robust case).

haha yeah Charlie, that's pretty bad. The case from HP works well and a screen protector may not be all that necessary. The HP's screen is so nice, you shouldn't cheapen the experience with the plastic.

What case do u suggest. I'm still looking for one. I heard the screen is kinda hard to scratch.
Get something like this. These have kept my Samsung Focus and 2 iPhones safe for a long time.
It's a little too expensive for a $149 tablet (I got the 32GB) but I'd still get it as I saved a lot on the tablet itself. Also, expect a sale on these as soon as Touchpad is no longer sold.

It's Gorilla glass like iPhone 4. It scratches just "almost" as easily as normal glass but a lot more shatter resistant.
I scrunched up the plastic wrapper and gave it to my cats as a toy... They love it
It's not some kind of rare museum piece or something... Just use it the way it was meant to. Would you wrap up all your furniture, tv, etc, in plastic too? Never could see the point of screen protectors and the likes, as long as you're reasonably careful with your stuff, there's no reason why it should get damaged.

HAHA I did for about a day, then I got annoyed with it. I might not even get a screen protector because have I been rocking my iPad w/o one and the screen is still perfect. Find it pretty difficult to scratch this up if I keep it in those portfolio type cases, and make sure I am wiping it with a clean micro-fiber cloth.
wait till you get some dirt or dust between that loose plastic wrap and your touchpad's screen. Its going to get scratched and then hate yourself for even considering this... Get a cheap screen protector from ebay ($9.99) and the genuine HP touchpad case... Bestbuy sells them for $24.99. I highly recommend it. Remember, you're protecting a $400 to $500 tablet. Just cause you got it for $100 or $150 doesn't mean its worth that little.

I put a full body skin on mine earlier today... It's amazing. Feels like nothing is there, but its protected all over from any scratches without adding any bulk.

I would just recommend taking it off. Buy a case and screen protector, if you want, but if not, then just let it be.
Mine is naked and it feels better that way. I don't lug it around places, or haven't yet, and just use it when I'm on the couch or on the bed. When I'm not using it, it isn't just sitting there, it's safely stowed away somewhere. Lowers the chances for knocking it off a table or something.
You'll be fine. Take off the damn plastic already.

I bought the ballistic BC case and I love it. Except for the screen protector. It got scratched and really blurry and it really ruined the amazing quality of the infuses screen. So I applied a regular screen protector (pack of three from Walmart for 10 bucks) and popped out the built in case protector easily by pushing on the edges and then put the case back on and now I must say that I am back to liking the case. And I am most likley going to dremel off the little Red bar behind the camera because it gives my pictures a red tint to it. I was skeptical at first but now its all good.
(Edit)Does anyone else get this when they take a picture with flash?

Because scratch resistant doesn't mean it will never get scratched. Even with just light use there are ever so slight scratch marks near the top of my phone.

I have the same case and I removed the built in protector not long after getting it. It just takes away from the beauty of the screen.
Are there any good ones that don't take away from the luxury of the nice screen?
I have that same case.. I love the belt clip holder. And no. I don't have that problem. And I take a good amount of pictures. I hope that dremel fixes your problems.
And as you said.. those Walmart screen protectors worked fine? There's not any give on the front part that clips in? It seems like there would be more than usual because it is a lot thinner of a protector? (for everyone that doesn't have one it's a fairly sheet thick of pllastic)
And if you are coming here thinking of getting one, I will share my experiences with you. The case is made up of a hard plastic that is a .... well let's just say it's really hard to take off. Not impossible but especially that first time. This makes battery pulls harder. Sometimes you can get around it by killing the phone by holding the power for 6 or so seconds and then hitting the volume keys at the right time but it doesn't always work. The outer layer that comes on the case is nice and bulky. If you think that you will be sticking it in your pocket with this layer you got another thing coming. It's a very sticky plastic which makes it very hard to pull out of a pocket. It works very well with the case holder though. A rather obnoxious thing is there is slits around the base layer that the case slides into. The top two and the bottom two tend to come undone very easily. They always seem to slide out which is annoying. It's doesn't exactly make it feel like the case is going to come off but annoying. The only way that you can keep it in your pocket is if you don't have that layer on which decreases the protection. It feels VERY solid when you have the extra layer on and rather secure when you don't. It's also a little rough on the hands around the edges so if you have soft girly hands then you might want to looks else wards towards a pretty smooth case. But if you are a man and work in something tough or just aren't sure where you will drop it, this is the case for you. (Have never used otterbox..). But that is NOT to say that this case is by any means perfect. I had this problem where it felt like the vibration inside the case was going to rattle the phone to pieces.. that was kind of unnerving but I got used to it after a while. Then when on vacation I hopped onto a hotel bed, my right hip landing on the bed and the hip belt holder BROKE! I wasn't very happy because I was busy and couldn't go to ATT but it would no longer hold my phone. After all these problems I took it back to ATT where they quickly traded out the case for a new one.. I had my receipt of course.. I THINK they used it? Not positive. I have had this new case for 2 or so month have jumped onto my own bed and haven't broken it. It's also worth mentioning that at ATT they mentioned something about a one-time exchange policy. one coworker to another which means I can't break it again within my one year time frame. D: This is a bummer because I went through 3 ipod touches in one year. Let's say I realized just how much water was in my life... And finally if you are still reading this thanks, I didn't mean to make it so lengthy. In conclusion, it's a good case, pricy but protects it well. It's dropped a few times and I haven't really thought twice, because it's "designed to survive life".. just don't jump on a hotel bed.

Just to let you guys know that I got an invisible shield for the S4 (front only) a couple of days before launch.
fitment is perfect and covers the screen up to the point of the sensors at the top and home button. I initially wanted the one allowing a skin but given that I use the cover with the hole, this was pointless.
Also the brodit car holder I am using clips from the top where the shield does not cover so it's perfect.
Not much else to say but if anyone was after one, it's not a bad purchase. Obviously still comes with the 25 year warranty on it too.
As for feeling, yes bare screen is lovely but I personally prefer the slightly matt/textured surface as it helps type and grip better than the slippy glass surface.
I have taken a pic but you can't really see anything so I won't bother uploading unless someone does want to see.

I also picked one up. Something that should be noted is that they sell different versions. The one I picked up was the HD which was supposed to be smoother than the regular one. It isnt as smooth as glass by any means but it is considerably nicer than the older plastic ones. There was also a privacy version to prevent shoulder surfing.
I will eventually migrate over to the tempered glass I think. Waiting to hear some reviews on a good sticking one, I hate bubbles or anything of the sort.
Ah yes good point
I think there are about 4 or 5 variants. I have to say and please don't let it be an insult to yours but HD had the worst of reviews. While it was more "glassy" like, it was also more thinner and was very easy to scratch.
I went for the original and so far despite a couple of rubbings at the gym, it's still mark-free.

No offense taken. Like I said I'm not thrilled with mine.

never did like the clarity of these things. they kind of make the screen look like it has ripples. i like the regular old screen protectors.
that being said xtremeguard.com has essentially the same product for like 80 cents each i think with the promo code 'coaster'
i bought some as backups cause they're so cheap
I just noticed after my last post that I do have a bunch of soft scratches in the screen protector. None that touched the glass of the phone but still you can see them under the right light.

This is called Orange Peel and Zagg is infamous for it.
I got this sp on launch and now a few days later it looks like I've had this phone for 2 years. So many small dents.
My spigen screen protector and case come tomorrow, cant wait to rip this crap off.

I bought the invisible shield extreme. There is absolutely zero orange peel on this model. It is also crystal clear. I had a few people who hate any screen protectors comment on the clarity. It really looks and feels like there is no screen protector. The extreme is a bit thicker, but it does not effect any aspect of how the touch screen functions.
I owned the original invisible shield on my last 2 phones. I will say that the orange peel was pretty ugly. They did work as advertised though...

Do you think the Extreme is worth getting over the HD? And does the Extreme work with a case?

I can't comment on the HD. It is worth getting over the original. It does work with a case. I just got my Seidio Active yesterday, works great!

Thanks. Well.... I guess I'll have to decide on my own whether to pay the extra $10 for the EXTREME. Wish it was cheaper.
Well, I ended up getting both and gotta say the Extreme is definitely worth it for a couple of reasons:
1. It is thicker so there is no worry about cases pushing up on it.
2. It comes out smoother and clearer without any air bubbles, but you have to wait longer for it to even itself out.
3. Easier to apply, especially with the rest of them attached to the silly new packaging.
4. More protection obviously.
Zagg hd all the way! It looks and feels like nothing is there. No orange peel rubber feel. Plus the same easy wet install.
I got the zagg extreme for $15.

I mean its gorilla glass 3...
Obviously it scratches but not that easy I've heard and every screen protector I've used diminishes the screen, I had a Zagg HD on this and took it off cause the ridiculous haze it has.
I hate screen protectors and cases.. I always carry my devices naked (the phone not me)..
Never had an issue thus far but I am very careful with my devices..
I have a spigen ultra crystal and I cant even tell it's on. I didnt have screen protector on my s2 and it had a few deep scratches and that was all I looked at, I couldnt stand it so im not going to take a chance especially with a screen like this

Hmm, yeah the Zagg absolutely sucked.im thinking about getting a glas.tr slim
I currently have this one: http://www.amazon.com/Moshi-iVisor-...-2-catcorr&keywords=moshi+ivisor+xt+galaxy+s4
and am extremely happy with it. doesn't diminish quality at all. I may get the glass.tr slim and compare the two, but so far I love the moshi ivisor xt
my only gripe with it is that it is a dust magnet at first, but I'm a week in and haven't had any issues with that since the first day or two, so it may have been some static electricity or something
I am SUPER careful with my phones... and I understand the gorilla glass 3 is even more scratch resistant... but I only dropped my galaxy s3 one time, from a height of less than 2 feet onto tile, and it still left a nasty scratch right in the center.
I learned my lesson... I got the ghost-armor screen protector for the s4. Very impressed... they do an awesome job of putting it on for you as well, not a single imperfection!

I have the flipview cover and it still closes perfectly, so in my book yes! :good: but something that some may not enjoy is the white of the frame is a slightly different white than the phone
I had a screen protector on my phone and I happen to have this line on the LCD screen under the glass with no scratch to the glass, haven't been dropped and no pressure indication.
And now I have no display on the screen. ... would I be good with warranty being I had the phone for 4 days?

It really depends on how anal you are about scratches. All smartphones, regardless of their glass, have a thin oleophobic coating on them. Its ehat gives the glass that nice, slipper feeling and what makes it easy to clean with just a swipe. This coating gets scratched relatively easily, but the scratches are really only visible when light is reflected on the screen at certain angles. If you care about these kind of scratches, id say get a screen protector. I posted a thread here noting micro scratches on an S4 demo unit that was only a few days old.
Having said that, if you wear earings with precious stones or have a gf/bf that does....get a screen protector! They will ruin your phone. I had the sapphire face on my watch scratched because it came in contact with my girlfriends diamond ring while walking side by side. If you work outdoors, or are a beach bum, get a screen protector for sure as well. A bit of sand on your fingers or shirt can scratch the phone it you swipe it or try to clean it on a your shirt. I personally think its better safe than sorry.....wrap it up son
Don't have a head full of gas. Cover your glass

Yeah i'm so buy that glass screen protector!
The video up above pretty much sold me on it
I'm also looking at this case by them now : http://www.spigen.com/cell-phone/samsung/galaxy-s4-cases/galaxy-s4-case-neo-hybrid.html
Anyone found reviews on that?
