[RESOLVED] Phone dead due to overheating? - Samsung Galaxy SL i9003

Hello everyone. I have a Galaxy SL running stock Gingerbread (2.3.6). It's not even rooted.
A few hours ago, I was playing Angry Birds. Battery level was around 80%. Then I switched to another game (SliceIt, to be precise). At this point, I noticed that the backside was unusually warm. I checked battery temperature via Elixir 2 - 45C. Usually it would be around 37C. I thought it was probably due to the game. And the day was hot too. But after a few minutes, the game just hung. Home button, lock button - all unresponsive. Then I pulled out the battery and reinserted it, but now it won't even turn on. I've tried charging it again, but no luck. Please help!

Strange never heard of this problem before
so is your phone is not turning on

Try to go to download Mode by pressing volume down+home button+power button

A Friend of me had a similar Problem, we took out the battery for about ten minutes. After that it booted again.

Yes, it won't turn on even to save its life.

Nah, mine went to 60 degree celcius, while on Skype videocall with OC to 1300MHz. Then i kept on charging and aftr a min or two, it said, charging stopped due to extremely low or high battery temp.
Later, i removed battery, and later, turned on after like 15min, smooth and normal as ever.
So your problem definitely isn't because of overheating.

Then what could permanently brick a phone like this? Hardware failure? But then this would be the first time. I've given the phone once to service center for a camera-related problem already, but I haven't experienced any hangups, or sudden reboots. Then again, maybe that's because I haven't even rooted it yet...

I didn't know our phone had a safety cutoff
what we do know is that not all phones are the same. if kbar's phone's safety cutoff wasn't working or something, or something else wasn't made 100% as designed, it's possible that the soldering on a circuit melted and he lost the electrical connection needed to run his phone. happened to my laptop before. I know a laptop doesn't have a cutoff (in most cases), but you get the point. even if the electronics are rated higher, the solder may melt sooner.
@ kbar, it's best to take it in for service if it won't go to download mode.

Case closed
Thank you all for your help. Got it back from service center. The guy was vague. "Board problem" or something. Makes me agree with what supergaijin said: probably a faulty chip. Anyway working fine now...

[Q] Help - strange trouble.

Guys i am using this phone from past 2 months and no problem whatso ever but since past 2 days its bugging a lot......when ever i connect my phone to a charger or USB then it works perfectly but the moment i unplug the charges the screen turns unresponsive and starts to lag...i tried restore factory settings but was of no help....!! please help as soon as possible!!!
I have the same behaviour here.
The phone is a Yoigo i9103 with 2.3.4 Android
I dont remember the factory kernel version.
The screen is irresponsive sometimes, slow and phantom most of the time. i can't hold touch (like when move a desktop icon or scroll a list) for more than 3 seconds, the screen acts as if I have removed my finger.
I reset to factory defaults and installed a 2.6.36.4-ardatdat kernel (V.1.5) and it have been working nice for a few days. Now its working bad again.
I have done factory reset again, removed screen protector (perhaps static issue), wipe cache, wipe davik, wipe battery stats, remove sd card and nothing.
When I plug the cable (from charger or from USB) it works smooth again instantly.
I tested with 456MHz max, 216MHz min governor interactive with the cable pluged and it works fine. Screen is smooth and response is fast and accurate.
Do again with 1000MHz max, 216MHzmin governor performance without cable and its irresponsive again.
So, I think its not a CPU work issue.
Question for people who know about capacitive screens or smart people in general
Could be something like the screen have static charge and when the cable is plugged the phone is well grounding, so it works fine again??
Sorry for my english
It might have to do with the voltages....
Herpderp Defy.
@ Romwe
It could be what you are saying but there could be many other factors at play other than that also.
We can't be sure if grounding is actually helping in reducing it by passing the static charge through the ground thereby increasing responsiveness, though its certainly possible.
I would suggest you to take it to the service center as they would simply change the motherboard or the screen.
Do update here whatever you do.
Ok. Ill do
This morning i plugged the phone to the car charger, its not a samsung's one its from an old blackberry, when i take the phone again, about 1h20', the screen was black and the phone does not respond.
Did a reset ( 7'' power button ) and the phone works again.
Now the interesting part: i have unplugged it about 1 hour ago and the phone still thinks its charging...
The battery reads 84% now, 3970mV and status charging
The screen is smooth and fast as when the phone is plugged.
This things are freaking me out :what:
Ill do a battery reset later.
Sent from my GT-I9103 using XDA
maybe its a micro usb port problem... I'm facing some unresponsiveness while charging, and when unplug my phone my screen sometimes make to fail the long press, and can't make long press touch for example like keeping the status bar in the middle... I solve it by blocking the screen and turning it back on. It always has been like this from day 1, so I think that's a bug that i should to bear with.
There's something definitely wrong with the hardware now that its showing wrong status of being charged when the charger is not even connected.
I feel the screen could be just fine as it is working fine when the system feels/judges its connected to a power source even though when it is not. There could be something wrong with the motherboard or as George said it could be the micro USB which is faulty.
If you take it to a service center I think these guys will simply flip your motherboard for a new one.
Keep updating us here.

When plugged u set to governer interactive and unplugged it is governer performance? I feel thats the issue. Set it to interactive for unplugged as well. Plus make sure ur voltages are not UV more than 25mV. Wipe battery stats once fully charged.
If nothing helps, then its surely h/w issue.

Well even i had the same problem.....but on a very temporarily basis..
i.e. the problems starts by its own and gets resolved by its own...it happens only for a few minutes....
I wonder how others are facing it for a longer period of time.

I have this problem too with my phone.
But I have found some sort of "fix" for it, though it doesn't seem to last very long.
When I get these problems I use a semi-wet wooden toothpick and cleans the chargerport (microUSB port). And after that it seems to work better.
My guess is that the system seems to recognise some sort of charge-trigger and that may interrupt the touchinput-sequence.
This is only my own thoughts and experience but it seems to work for me, soo I figured I could share it with all of you!
Cheers!

I could have found a solution:
It seems the problem is all related to dirt in the microUSB-port.
I cleaned the port very much, and made sure it was clean even in the tight area between "ground" and the "stick" where the power comes from.
I used a small piece of standard writingpaper and folded it once and stuck it between ground and the "powerstick". I also used a thin knife, like a razorblade to get it clean.
But now it seems all problem I had has disappeared!
Hope it helps others

[Q] Phone restarts randomly

Hi! Sorry if this was posted in the wrong forum, im new here
I installed Fallout V 4.3.0 on my HTC DS and everything was working fine. But then suddenly my phone started to restart randomly. 1-2 minutes after booting it restarts again. If i take out the battery, wait 1 minute, and the put i back in the phone starts automatically again. Then another 1-2 minutes before restart loop.
This does not happen when the charger is plugged in. First thing i thought was a battery-issue, but this happened after flashing a ROM, so?
The phone was working fine on Fallout V 4.0.0, problem occured when updating.
-I wiped everything before installing the ROM.
-Have tried to reinstall Fallout, same problem
-Have tried to install Endimyon, same problem.
Information about the phone:
Current ROM: [Endymion V3.5|Sense 3.5|GB 2.3.5][kernel V2.2|ControlCenter]
Hboot: 6.98.1002
Radio: Default
S-off
Would appreciate some help, as my phone is useless atm! :crying:
Hello,
Maybe this should be posted in the Fallout thread (however you have to make 10 posts before being able to post in the dev section...). Up to the moderators to move your thread or not
I have had some similar issues after flashing Fallout, except my phone didnt reboot but it just went off a couple of minutes after i tuned it on. Although this just seemed to happen once. After I turned it on again, everything ok until I charged it to 100%, turned it on again - and same issue.
I then flashed CM9, same issue.
I read somewhere that it might be a charge level display issue : when you plug the phone in charge and unplug it right away, battery indicator will say it is charged to 100% - while obviously it is not...
Hope that will help you.

Yes. Do you think buying a new battery will do the trick?
Time for the really stupid question - but it is the old one and has been a problem for many people (including me).
Have you tried to insert a piece of paper, folded so it is 3 or 4 sheets thick, in between the battery and the back of the phone when you insert it? There is a manufacturing tolerance which can cause the battery to move and lose connection to the contacts sometimes.
It's probably not the solution for you, but it's a damn sight cheaper than buying a new battery immediately.

Thanks for answering, but i've tried that... The weird thing is that if i turn on the setting "screen always on", the phone does not restart. Or if the charger is plugged in. It only restarts some seconds after the screen goes black (inactivity) or if i press the power button.
Sadly I don't have an answer for you, however, I wanted to recommend that you avoid taking your battery out as that can cause damage to the emmc chip and thus brick your phone

Don't worry about the eMMC chip that the other poster mentioned - the problem is not caused by removing your battery - it is caused by not removing it properly, or by removing and reconnecting it quickly which means there is still residual charge when it reconnects.
Given the more detailed description, I assume you have a custom ROM running? If so then try two things
1) Try to decrease the under-voltage settings by 50mV
2) Increase the minimum CPU speed.
It sounds like the phone is going to sleep, but is slowed down too much and a reboot is forced.

Tried your suggestion, but no luck. Will buying a new battery give me any chance?
It might do. I would be tempted to find a phone shop and ask them if you can test your phone with a battery from them before buying it though - just in case it is something else causing this.

Hy Guys!
My DS is doing the same thing after I istalled the ICE DS 5.1. Funny thing is it started only after 1 day. It was working perfectly until it restarted after pressing the power button. I've tried different ROMs (CM 7.2; Fallout 5) but it happend almost instantly. Also tried the CPU voltage, no result.
I'm curious superlorre if the new battery did the trick?
Or is there a thread I missed where the problem got solved?
Thanks in advance.

[Q] Spontaneously Bricked?

Hi,
I've had my TF700 since it came out and I love it. It was running CROMBi-kk for the last month or so, and my experience has never been better. However, it would die before the battery reached anywhere close to 0%. I didn't care about that until last night, when it died at more than 50%. I was surprised that the battery would not calibrate itself over time.
Anyway, I drained the battery some more, until it could no longer boot, and left it on the charger overnight. It will not boot at all now. I held the power button down for more than a minute, on and off the charger, on and off the keyboard. It's completely dead. The only reaction I get from it is the green LED on the top of the tablet when I plug the charger in. It never starts booting up, never vibrates, nothing. The ROM has been stable until now, making me think that it's hardware. If it matters, it's been like this for 12 hours, and the tablet has been in room temperature.
Is there anything I can do to turn it on or verify? I don't care about data loss. Any and all ideas are welcome.
Thanks,
- Bocete

Connect it to your PC via USB, make sure the computer doesn't go into sleep mode and let it trickle charge for 8 hours or so. The LED will not come on, but it should charge very slowly. This has helped some people to recalibrate the battery too, so hopefully it'll breathe some life into it.
BTW, it's never a good idea to totally drain the battery and let the tablet die for lack of juice.

Did you have fsync off? If you have sudden reboots (and yours seems to have died multiple times from lack of power) you should not run it with fsync off..
I know, that doesn't help anymore - just thinking somebody else may benefit from reading this.
Leave it alone a couple of days and try again. Sometimes things magically do work themselves out...

fsync off cannot cause this kind of problems - in the worst case your data partition needs to be reformatted, but the ROM will boot. In the very unlikely case that you remounted the system partition writable and you crash while writing to it, you may have to reflash the ROM too. But it can never break the bootloader or the recovery.
Nah, this rom was running with fsync and without data2sd.
I think it's time to start looking for a new one ;( Not the expense I needed, but did I use it daily.

Still nothing. I think it's dead.
The upcoming TF303 looks decent. Can you anticipate how vibrant the modding community will be considering the Intel Atom? The modding community, along with your kernel work, made my TF700 usable, and I am really thankful for that. I would like to have custom options in case the stock kernel/rom do not deliver.
If Intel Atom is in any way problematic, I may try to get a new TF700. They're still being sold, and presumably not for long. The modding community for the TF701 seems basically nonexistant, which is a problem for me.

I had that just happen to me. What I had to do was open the TF700 up using the steps from iFixit and after opened up I turned the power switch slider on the main board to off for about a minute and then back on. Once I did that it powered back up again. One thing though if you're not comfortable with opening up you're Tab I would not suggest doing it because the plastic tabs that hold it together can be easily broken I got lucky and didn't end up breaking any of them. Still not sure why the Tab did this in the first place. In any case I hope this helps.

Glad you got it working again. Before that, have you tried pressing the power button for a very long time (like 30 seconds) or pressing the pinhole reset button? I was under the impression that these would have a similar effect as physically turning it off and on.

Yeah I tried all the usual methods of resetting including holding the power button for over 1 minute, hitting the reset button beside the HDMI connector and trying the PC slow charge route nothing would even get it to power up no vibrate at all. When I couldn't get any of that to work the last ditch was to try disassembling and honestly even after I did that I still couldn't get it to responds until I used the power switch slider and after that it started back up. I'm just happy it worked.

Pixel XL power off by its own and won't turn on

Hi Guys,
I need help here. I can't send the phone back for warranty because I've imported it from else where. Also I didnt root it or install any mods or whatsoever. Running 7.1.2
I was just surfing the net, nothing fancy was loaded. It was in battery saver mode which means it should be in the range of 20ish% when all of a sudden it just shut down. Thinking it was perhaps low on battery and it shut down by itself I put it to charge, but there was no indication that it was charging.
I tried turning it on by holding on to the power button for almost a minute and nothing happens even when I waited for 10 mins and try again.
So i tried going to recovery mode but pressing power and vol. down button, after waiting for almost a minute there was a short vibration and thats it. And if I continue holding on to it, there was 5-6 short vibrations.
Is there anyone who can help me on this?
Thanks.

Thanks for the reply!
Is there anything I can do about it? What about the vibrations I get when I hold the vol down and power button does it mean anything?
Maybe test the charger on a different device to be certain there is power going to the phone. Then leave it plugged in, walk away for 1 hour. Come back and try again... I've had devices seem to be completely dead because there was literally nothing in the battery. Plugged them in for a while, came back, worked like a charm. Of course this might be a long shot. Still worth a try. Good luck!

Tak the battery Out.
Rub the (+ & -) Polaris on your hair or a carpet (so it gets an electric energy) for 30 seconds.
Now place your tongue on tye polarises if you fell an electric shocked your thongue that means battery works fine.
Or else Its A problem in the battery

Doesn't seem to work.. Any more ideas?
Couple months back my pixel turned off while using it and called support, they replaced it under warranty. I never found out why it went dead. I know this don't help..

Just a quick update. I found a phone repair company whom were willing and is able to try repair my phone.
Will be back to post their findings if they are indeed able to do it.
Did you ever get this issue sorted?
I have the exact same problem.

Shutting down after startup

Hi,
there are some threads about the bootloop problem, but I couldn't find exactly same problem: some days ago my phone landed into the bootloop. It was a bit spooky with battery charging state, it was jumping for different states - 3%, 99%, 24% after every loop. So I bought a new battery and replaced the old one. Now the phone starts to LG logo (with starting sound), but after 10 seconds I can hear the power-off sound and the phone turns off. It seems to be a "normal" shutdown, not the "reset-bootloop": I hear power-off-sound, LG-power-off-logo and LED is blinking blue for about 10 seconds. After that it repeats infinitely. Also, if I turn the phone off it stays off, but if I put the charger in it, it's starts from itself again and again. Did not tried the hard reset until now. Any ideas, guys?
update: tried hard reset. it's starts until "optimizing apps", if it's done, i can see for a second the "first setup" screen and then it's immediately shutting down. same problem with the old, original battery.
edit: for the first time I saw message "high temperature" on the screen, before it was powered off. But the phone is not even warm...

What you describe is exactly that happened to the Mrs's GF2. One day it was fine and then all of a sudden the battery drained really quick. Now she can only get to the optimizing apps screen before it shuts down again. Ordered a new battery but that doesn't look to be the solution from your findings. :crying:
My phone has the exact same prblm n i was thinking of buying a battery but now that i have read your post i am doubting my battery purchase.
By the way have u found any fix also are u sure the battery is genuine n not some poor replica?
I had this problem when I had flux in my battery port causing a battery connection problem. Sometimes it said temperature too high and other times temperature too low. I was able to fix it by taking out the motherboard using 90% alcohol and a toothbrush to clean the battery port in the motherboard. Then I let it dry and problem was gone. Now I'm not saying this is exactly your problem but it just means that there's most likely bad connectivity to your battery. It could be your battery, the cable or the port.
Mrs received her new battery and it seemed genuine. Put it in and the phone is 100% dead. No power, no charging, no life.
Its not all bad news as she bought a Honor 6X which is a far better phone.
I tried all the hints I could find (except cleaning it with alcohol), but nothing help to start the phone again. Could be defective heat/temp sensor on the motherboard.
Battery was from "Polarcell" - that's a pretty good one manufacturer with satisfied user reviews on amazon (also had good personal experience with their batteries). Just for info: phone doesn't even start with original battery anymore - same problem.
I already switched to Honor 9 (excellent phone!), but will give another try and clean the battery attachment port with alcohol today. Will give you an update later.
If you plug the phone into the charger does it even show the battery charging symbol at all?
From what I've been reading the temp sensor is in the battery and sends the temp signal through the battery connector to the motherboard. So if you replace the battery it's like plugin in a new temp sensor. However if the connector is bad then that's the only thing that I can think off that would prevent the phone from starting. If the port is bad I don't know if it can be fixed or not.
Had no luck yesterday with port cleaning. Still the same error.

Yes, but it's more complicated. If the phone is turned off and you plug USB in, it starts to boot from itself (without pressing the power button). In most cases it's going up to LG logo and powering off again. After powering off I can see battery charging symbol for about 5 seconds, after that it's changing to battery symbol with an thermometer. While the phone is in this bootloop, it's charging. From the point with this battery temperature symbol it stops charging. I read something on reddit about getting it up to 100% could solve the problem. So, I tried to plug it on and off about 50 times to get fully charged, got it up to 100%, but it's still rebooting. Can't get into recovery, but it's possible to get into the "hard reset"-menu, where I can wipe data. After this the phone boots normally (at the first sign), it's starting optimizing apps, I can see the "first-setup"-screen (that one with language chooser) for a half second and it turns off again. Same behavior with both batteries - new one and the original.

That's a lot of combined symptoms. I have no idea what could be wrong with yours exactly. I would try to bake the motherboard with solder flux as a last resort. I had to do that with my G flex 2 twice to bring it back to life. I'm not sure if it would fix it in your case, but at this point you don't have much to lose.

I've already spent enough time with trying get it back to life. Loved this phone, but I had to send it to LG service every half year (3 times!) and got it every time with a new motherboard back. My brother had to send his one two times within a year because of several problems (no vibration, no sound through 3.5 jack...). Furthermore it was not possible to root or unlock the bootloader since Android 6 (what I've got with the last replaced mainboard, but what was not available through the software update!). So, just for me it was a very bad experience and for sure I'll not buy an LG phone for the next 10 years.

Oh, that might void your warranty if you changed battery yourself. As I can see you're from Germany, EU, so you should ask for DAP (defective after purchase) act from service to get refund for your phone.
I've never heard about DAP. Do I give them my phone and get from them some money back or what is that about? Is it an manufacturer service or general refund possibility in EU?

I assume it should be available in EU. You should contact your seller or the service about if for detailed info. When you dave details about that please share them here.
