[Q] Possible Brick - need assistance - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

Ok, so I have been searching for a fix for a couple of hours with no luck. I think I have bricked my phone but I cannot be sure. Here is the issue:
1. I cannot get into download mode. The button combos wont work.
2. It will not boot. It goes to the boot image but never goes farther.
3. I can get on stock recovery. it says "rfs format failed ..." if I try and do anything.
I have no idea what to do. Any help would be appreciated.

What ROM were you on & what did you attempt to do that got you to this point?

How did you backup? stock froyo or gingerbread? What were you flashing "back to stock" from?
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium

If you happened to be flashing back to stock with KF# ROMs, I believe it's a different button combination to get into download mode.
Every other ROM has the hold-both-volume-buttons-and-insert-USB button combination though.

How, exactly, are you trying to get into download mode? Be as specific as you can - maybe there's a method you've not tried.

First off thanks for the replies guys.

[Q] Stuck in bootloop

My phone randomly turned off and went into a bootloop today. I've tried everything I know (pulling the battery, tried booting into CWM too) but they didn't work. Every time I put the battery in, the bootloop starts. I went through some other threads i found and a lot of them were talking about Odin, but idk what that is. Any help guys?
I'm running Infused v2.2.3, Entropys kernel
EDIT: New problem: I made my own JIG using resistors, and when I boot into download mode, it just keeps boot looping into download mode until i take the JIG out, so I can't flash using Odin or any other method if it keeps turning on and off.
Any solutions to this?

do you have a back up of your rom? if you have tried everything and it's not working, than yes.
Try doing a backup of your rom in recovery then wipe date factory reset and wipe cache and dalvik cache and reboot. See if that helps to boot up your phone

Can't boot into recovery though
What method are you doing when trying to get into recovery?
Pull battery. Put it back in. Hold both the volume keys and then hold the power button. Wait until the samsung screen shows and ONLY let go of the power button while still holding the volume buttons down. Factory reset and try to flash again.

Yes, I'm using the volume controls to try to get in, is there any other way, besides buying that JIG thing?
I would try letting your battery die in the loop then pull it and put it back in and try download mode your phone should not try to power on just by putting the battery in not sure why its doing that but maybe if the battery dies it'll work

2nd one didn't work, that's what I was trying before
Going to let the battery die and see what happens, trying to make my own JIG in the mean time
EDIT: Might just do this instead of actually buying a JIG, has anyone ever tried it? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0aoabVtPJ8
Making your own should work.
There's a fine point I want to make sure that you are doing correctly.
RECOVERY is holding all three buttons. Two volumes and power for 2 to 3 cycles.
Download is pull battery. Hold only two volume buttons, NO power button. Insert battery while holding volumes and insert USB. You can also insert USB then insert battery.
Try a different USB cordS. Try a different USB ports. Try a different battery

[Q] HELP! bricked!

i was flashing stock 2.2 back on my captivate and it rebooted. nothing happened after that. i cant turn on my phone and i tried getting into download mode. What should i do? Am i hard bricked?
the three button combo doesn't work? to get back into download mode.
One method that worked for was:
1. take the battery out
2. Take sim card and sd card out (just in case...)
3. Hold the two volume buttons
4. Insert the usb cable and keep holding the volume buttons.
5. When the phone detects the signals in the cable it should go into download mode
Good luck

Download One-Click UnBrick that should work.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1153310
Somewhere on xda one of the devs created and posted a very compact software solution this problem.
For the life of your caotivate I cannot locate it right now... but I know there is a solution to this problem.
Try searching on google as well as xda ( I usually search on google with "site:xda-developers.com" after to search only this site ) for "captivate soft unbrick" or something similar. When I'm on a comp I will try to find the thread and post on here. But in the mean time... step away from it and take a deep breath.. it may get more frustrating before you see that boot animation again.
Good Luck
And remember, the only way to brick the captivate is to use a hammer ;-)

Alright then follow these instructions.
What you need:
Odin: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
USB Cabel
Steps:
Remove battery, SIM card and micro SD card.
Open Odin on the computer.
Put the battery back in.
Plug in the USB cable to the phone.
Hold both volume up and down.
With VOL up/down held in, plug usb cable to the computer.
Your phone will show the DOWNLOADING yellow image.
Recommended: I recommend you to save all your files when you plug in your USB to your Computer so when you have any issues you can restore it back.
Allen, i already tried that and no results.

Please help. I was using odin3 v1.85 and trying to flash the stock EP4 from the imnuts page. during the flash odin said it failed. My phone now fails to be recognized by my PC. I am not able to boot into CWM nor am I able to boot in to download mode. Any which way I try to get the phone booted up I get the screen that looks like:
cellphone...exclamation point in a triangle... computer
With the battery out of the cell, if I plug the phone into my computer, it is not recognized by the computer and no power flows to the phone
When I put the battery back in and either try to boot to CWM or download mode, I get the:
cell... exclamation point in triangle...computer.
Am I now bricked for good? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Are you holding the volume down button when plugging it in? Battery out, hold volume down, plug in phone... If still not recognized, try downloading an older version of odin... Then repeat... Ive had my phone at that same screen and came out ok so dont freak... Lol.

Good thought. I booted up Odin3 version 1.3 and no luck. The phone will not go in to download mode but Odin1.3 will recognize the phone as plugged in, which is a step in the right direction compared to Odin3 1.85 which would not. Oh, I am beginning to "freak out" from this stress!!
Any recommendations or suggestions? Thanks ahead of time.
...
I use odin v1.82... Try that. If I rememebr right it took me several tries before I got odin to recognize my phone. So your starting with the phone off and battery out... Your holding down volume down key as you plug the phone in? and when you do that it odin recognizes your device but your device just shows that its charging? Try flashing it anyways with the .pit file and stock ep4d... If that doesnt work try flashing CWM first.. Then flash the restore package.. Sounds to me like your phone has been absolutely wiped so you have no recovery image. I think thats finally what got me up and running again.. This is a fixable situation, dont give your hopes up!!!!

[Q] Automatic phone restart if plug in charger or usb cable

I have flashed couple of rom, when problem started can't say exactly. The problem is if i shut down mobile and plug in charger or usb cable it automatically make it Switch on. is this normal?
I did Heimdall one click back to stock and this problem goes. So now before going to any custom flash can any one guide me if this is normal.
step i would follow after this is:
1. back to stock by Heimdall one click jar
2. put phone in download mode by "adb reboot download " as i have problem making it into download mode i tried all suggested combo but nothing works for me.
3. flashed the Entropy's dd kernal again by Heimdall one click solution.
4. no copy the custom rom zip in sd card
5 boot to recovery , do the cleaning, install zip .
It shouldn't completely turn on, however it should only turn on to where it displays and confirms that the battery is charging and then shut-off automatically seconds later. To get into Download Mode:
1. Turn off your phone and pull out the battery for about 10-15 seconds.
2. Just put the battery back and don’t turn it on.
3. Hold both Up+Down Volume keys at the same time simultaneously plug in the USB Cable.
4. After about 2-3 seconds, you can see the yellow download mode logo on the screen.
Heimdall or Odin should now recognize and pick up your device and go from there of to a fresh start.

When you say on, off, on, off. Do you mean the lights flash then it goes off or does it try to boot?
Can you get into download mode?
Have you tried a different battery or left the battery out for an hour or so, then tried again?

First you need to download Heimdall or Odin from the ISET page to you PC. I believe Odin uses the Kies drivers and Heimdall replaces the with a Samsung composite driver. I personally use the Heimdall back to stock that is rooted.
Once you have them and decide which one you will use, you will need to get into download mode. Take the battery out, connect USB to phone and preferably a rear USB port on your PC. Hold volume up and down, No Power button though, and then insert the battery. This should put you in download mode and you need to push volume up to get to it. Volume down cancels it and will reboot. You may want to just try that one time to see if it corrects the problem. If not, repeat steps to get to download and flash either Odin to Heimdall and then start flashing again.
Read the instructions on the OP of Odin or Heimdall and ask questions if you aren't sure of what to do.
