[Q] Please confirm when SL101 Variant receives ICS - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Delighted for all the excitement of the ICS updates for our devices, please can the first people to get the OTA update for the SL101 Slider please announce. There may be fewer of us lurking on this forum, so it would be appreciated amongst all the exceited posters. Cheers.

Don't hold your breath.
A) It's Asus.
B) The SL101 sold very poorly because it's sales were undercut by the Prime

So Asus say it is on the way...
Just need some patience I guess...
w-w-w.phoneapocalypse.com/2012/01/aus-transformer-prime-tf201-tf101sl101-ics-updates-uk/

No patience! Let's have it yesterday! I too have the SL 101 ..love it, eager for ICS.
Any Slider peeps tried downloading the Asus web full ICS download [9.2.1.11]?

Well, looks like Asus just changed their spec page for the SL101 to read:
Android™ 3.1 Honeycomb OS(3.2 upgradable) with Adobe® Flash® support*
With the bullet meaning:
*All specifications are subject to change without notice. Please check with your supplier for exact offers. Products may not be available in all markets.
No ICS for us it seems. Ever. Save for maybe a custom firmware. But considering how little sl101 specific modding there is, I wouldn't count on it.

As far as I can see, the ASUS site still says "ICS Upgradable"
Can't post links, but if you Google "asus sl101" its the 1st result.

The Asus website says now:
Android™ 3.2 Honeycomb OS(4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich upgradable) with Adobe® Flash® support*
But no OTA update yet, at least for me...

Still no OTA for me here either. SL101 in Texas.

You can root and install recovery nd then flash the TF ICS. It ran fine on mine. Revolver 4 runs good too, just flash the Slider compatibility.

Maybe you can tell some of us Newbees how to root our SL101's. I have tried everything from RazorClaw, to z4root and ViperMod and nothing seems to work. I'm of the opinion now that I don't know how to get the SL101 into a maintenance mode to run ViperMod because it keeps saying it isn't in the right mode (ASX?) when I boot it with the vol+and power keys pressed. Maybe there is another way of getting into maintenance mode with the SL101 or I'm doing something wrong.
It appears that ViperMod might work if I can just figure out the buttons to start it in maintenance mode.
Anyone that has rooted one should know, inquiring minds want them to share.

How do we get our little grubby hands on ICS for the TF101? And how do you install it on a SL101?
Inquiring minds want to know.

Go to transformerforums dot com, to the tf101 forum and look for the thread titled "when all else fails"
Tf101 firmware can be downloaded from ASUS website.

[Q] New Eee Pad Transformer Owner Look For Root

Hello everybody! Like the title says, I just got my TF101 2 days ago. I immediately came to look for the rooting process but not being very savy in the whole ADB process I was intimidated quite a bit. I ran into the whole B70 deal so I did a little research on XDA/Google and I have a B80 model. Am I to understand that I should just wait for an updated root process or am I missing something here?
Ya you will just have to wait. if you can exchange it for a b60 then you can get on with it but if not you will have to wait. b80 just means it was made in august
Hey Hunter,
Same boat as you. I must have sunk 6 hours into trying to root it until I finally realized that was the problem I was running into (made me feel like such a huge n00b-c4nn0n lo). Basically, the nvflash method fails for me everytime and I always get an error that says something like "failed to write to USB". Similar for you?
My girlfriend got a Transformer today that was still a B50, not sure what is going on in my area but everywhere else has new units in!

Is it true that i will loose OTA updates?
I just got used to the honeycomb interface so im not in the mood of installing a custom ROM yet, i just want to have root in order to install certain apps that requiere root.
Thanks in advance!
You will loose OTA updates but the interface won't really change, it'll just speed up!
Yup exactly the same. Has anyone heard anything new?

[Q] Benefits of rooting?

Although I am not new to the rooting process; i have rooted, flashed, and unrooted by Droid X. However this asus eee pad transformer is a more valuable device that I am more hesitant to root. This past weekend I helped rooted by friend's Transformer but I am not likely to follow this rooting process. I am not sure of the benefits other than overclocking and rom flashing. I may want to root the Transformer but I am not sure if I can root it and still be able to get the ICS update pushed out by Asus. Can you guys explain if I can get this update when I have a rom flashed or I will have to set it back to stock and unroot it. Also can you guys explain more benefits of rooting this device.
Thanks,
Ryan
root only will not stop OTA update. It's when you install custom ROM and/or CWM recovery is when OTA update will fail.
Just ask your self if you're happy with it root or non root. Personal prefernces.

Is there an easy way to get rid of the CWM recovery and have it back to normal just in time for the update. I have used the rootkit v7 on my friends Transformer and I think it put CWM recovery already for you. So in other words, is their a easy way to get back to normal stock root or stock without root???
I think if your rooted and the update comes out you will only have to wait a few hours maybe a day at most for one of the devs to release a stock Ics ROM with root and superuser and all you would have to do is flash it.
At least that's how I think it goes based off past experience with Evo 4g and Evo 3D

I'm also considering rooting my transformer but have second thoughts like you about tablet costing more if something goes wrong compared to a phone.... But I think rooting now before the Ics update comes it'll be better for us due to the fact that when Ics update comes out it has the potential to block any way of rooting the transformer and like I said in last post rooting now then flashing a rooted version of Ics will benefit us by getting the update and not loosing root.
Now I just need to figure out how to root my new transformer I'm on the latest update 8.6.5.21-20111216 and find a stocked rooted ROM
Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated and THANKS will be given!!

This may sound like a stupid question but since this is an old repack version of the asus rom. Does this mean that we have to download and install every firmware that asus pushed out or will it skip a few and head to the latest firmware??? (i think i made the question harder to understand. Just tell me if you need me to clarify)

You should be able to update to the latest. If not you could always download the latest version from Asus website and try to manually update through the stock recovery.

sounds a bit risky, i just stick with the old firmware and if I have to keep on updating it, seems safer. What rom do you have on your Transformer and how are the features compared to the others???

I use Roach's Prime 2.1.1. Happy with it so I never bother trying anything else.
If and when ICS get released I'm pretty sure Roach will cook something up
if not CyanogenMod might have something also.

[Q] [TF101] Is there a way to get back to US stock?

HI - looked in the forums but have not seen anything obvious.
I am on Revolution HD but looking for a way to get back to stock - which in Canada is the US firmware (not the WW). I currently have the WW firmware with some build.prop hacks to make it thinks its US (not perfect but more apps are available in the app store).
Apologies if this is buried in the forms, but if someone could point me in the direction of re-loading the US based firmware in a how-to it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

No unfortunately - don't have the right SBK version

You might see if recover installer has a "stock" option. Or now that CWM recognizes the TF see if it will allow you to reflash to stock.

Yes. Use the first one gls9 mentioned. I used that method a few weeks ago and it worked flawlessly, I'm stock and rooted with OTA rootkeeper.
Sweet Shady - so you followed that and are back to the US firmware (not WW - I thought Canada was on WW but went into Staples on the weekend and checked out one of the display TFs LOL .)
Shady - so did you download the US. 21 from the ASUS site when you were doing This?

I think you can flash all the parts through the staging partition. You'll have to get a US stock rom, pull it apart and repack the parts that you need to replace- probably the EBT/bootlaoder, SOS/recovery, and LNX/boot.img.
Google and search... it's out there.

Use this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1154947 I got everything from there.
Also use this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1427838 to root the stock ROM then go to the market and download OTA rootkeeper (it's free!) to make a backup of your root. You can then upgrade to ICS, if it ever comes, without a problem.

Awesome - thanks. I noticed in that first thread there's a link at the end to a different re-packed file - so may use that.
What ROM were you coming from Shady?
Be nice to get back to stock - a little uneasy with the TF101 though myself - don't know it was as my T959D phone )

I was coming from KRAKD. Pretty good ROM I must say. I recently flashed CWM again to install a custom Kernel and now my Transformer flies (with the addition of ADW Launcher Pro)
using the Samsung SAMSUNG Kies I was able to go from ICS back to the OEM ROM. This software detected that I had a different version, and asked if I wanted to install the latest Samsung version. So of course I did. I tried again later after testing another ICS and I tried to do the same, and it did not give me that option. I think I could still of did it suing the emergency recover option in Kies, but you have to get a number from Tech support first I think.
Don't think that will work for an Asus product

Unlocking/Rooting with current JB firmware?

Is there a way to Unlock or Root the TF700 with the current JB firmware? My TF700 came stock with JB, and it seems like Asus took down the links to the ICS firmware on their support site.
As others have said in various threads, you can be on JB and unlock no problem. It says ICS only but Asus are just lazy and haven't updated their site. I unlocked on JB and everything is fine.

Correct. I just did it last night and everything worked fine. Unlocked and rooted on latest 4.1.1 JB!

New TF700 owner here.
Curious to getting root w/o unlocking it? I looked at some other threads and only talk about keeping root while upgrading etc.
So far loving this tablet, the dock makes it 100x more useful when you need it.

As far as I know, the only way to root it without unlocking the bootloader is if you have ICS and just use the debugfs command program, as far as rooting with JB I know you have to have the bootloader unlocked. In all honesty I don't mind taking the risk of unlocking my bootloader because I have Geek Squad Protection on my tablet and can just get a new one for free.

You should use TWRP 2.3.1 instead of 2.2.2.3, which he reccommends, though. They have fixed the issues he talks about.

I'm wanting to take the plunge myself - but do you have to use the Asus unlocker tool or is there a way around that? I'm too late to get SquareTrade I think. Too late, and too poor LOL. I just have that nagging feeling that as soon as I do the thing will bork on me.
Edit: Sorry...I just read that you can't unlock without the ASUS tool, and it's a damn shame. I want so bad to rant right now but I won't.
I think I'm still going to unlock though.
The only way I could find to root was to install CWM recovery first, and then install the CWM SuperUser app. I replaced CWM with TWRP when all was said and done. Both are now touch interfaces making things so much less laborious. The links for doing so are all around the web and these forums. I had my frustrations but in the end it was easier than I thought it would be. I'm happy I took the plunge. I believe a lot of my frustrations were from ASUS' horrible implementation of Android. My benchmarks are now 6300+ on Quadrant with 2D GPU rendering on. I know benchmarks aren't everything but, you won't be sorry if you're giving up some kind of warranty to get the device you paid premium dollar for.
