Replacement Phone Problems - EVO Shift 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I got a replacement phone, which ends up being worse than my phone that had a stuck power button. My phone stays in 1x mode and the physical keyboard has issues. The H and Y buttons do not respond unless they are jammed. I could possibly try to get it replaced with another refurb POS and wait a week with a crappy loaner. I'm curious if anyone knows any other ways around these issues. Mainly the radio, I'm ok with the keyboard, I rarely used it anyway.
What I've tried:
Rooted, flashed many ROMs.
Flashed radio.
I did open the phone, and tried to see if there was something under the keyboard
^-- lost the little void sticker but hoping nobody notices.
RUU back to stock 2.2, then OTA'd back to 2.3.3
Literally tried everything I could think of, any other ideas?

Take it back and make them give you another one. What your describing are hardware issues as far as the KB. I'd still make them replace it.

This is typical. I reported a problem to HTC already and will be following up next week. Don't return your phone and tell them to order another replacement and swap bad parts for good.

Yeah it's called a re-furb

Yea I think I'm going to call them tomorrow and get them to just send it to me instead of dealing with Best Buy. I may not be an expert but I know way more than their people that work there do. The whole refurb idea is ridiculous, I bought a new phone, if my phone breaks give me a new phone like I paid for originally. Sorry I just hate how companies work these days, especially the rapist phone companies. Might be headed towards the roam until they cancel me road next.

I've learned the hard way, if you don't get some satisfaction with who your dealing with. Ask for there Supervisor, or whoever is higher. That pretty much goes for anywhere you purchase something. Believe me I've had a few LONG phone conversations with Sprint. One lasted just shy of three hours. But they sent me a Brand New Touch Pro 2 .

When I had my TP2 I told them I was leaving and got a bunch of free stuff, I sold all of it on ebay lol.

Still have a TP2 . Dual boot, Android and WinMo 6.5 .

I did keep the TP2, I had Android on it once and then I never could get it to work again. Now it lays next to my Touch Pro in the top drawer

Had a Touch Pro also, before that a Mogul.

I liked the touch pro way better than the tp2

Well I liked the TP2 way better. Mostly because of the bigger screen. But it was also faster. It was technically my first Android phone .

Agree TP2 had everything, but capacitive screen and Android, that keyboard.. I still dream HTC brings it to a shift.
Other note, 3 hours on the phone and also after going to the store to be told my issues weren't good enough I should break my glass, I got a brand new our of box shift. Back of Mikrunny and loving my phone again

Replacement shift #6 is on the way. The tech is going to swap the camera/motherboard for me. Let's see how it goes.

agree, there isn't another phone on Sprint I'm willing to trade for. The Evo View looked nice, but I'm sure its an unglorified Evo 3D

Agreed, I looked at a bunch of different devices recently. Nothing I'd be willing to trade my Shift for .

I got my 7th replacement and this one is looking good. The sliding feels a lot more loose than the last one but everything else works great (so far).

Any past G1 owners...

ever get that pang of nostalgia when you see a G1? My poor G1 was run over early last year and I've missed her ever since. I was browsing craigslist the other day and saw a bunch for sale and almost bought one just so I could have it again. Not that it would ever be used but just for old times sake haha.
Just replaced my G1 a few weeks ago with the G2x. Still own the G1, but haven't looked back at all due to how amazing the G2x is
Funny, I just saw one at the airport yesterday and I did smile.
That's how I feel about my N1 ... its just sitting on my counter not being used but I can't bring myself to sell it. Lol

I have one I use all the time. I got Super D running on it, the battery life is great and I put my sim card in it when I am on my motorcycle or doing something that my phone might be in danger, or need the extra battery life.

I was hesitant to sell my G1, but I sold it to a very close friend so I knew it would be well taken care of. it was never warranty replaced or fixed, and I got it on week one of the launch date and it still works today from what I'm told. Today he rocks a G2.

I'm still using my G1 haha. It's screen cracked 1.5 years ago, but it still works fine. Some for the keys are hard to press, and it's a bit slowed down, but it's still kicking! I had the G2X but returned it a couple weeks ago to get a better deal on it. Now I'm thinking about waiting for Gingerbread before repurchasing.
I had a g1 at launch, then moved to the n1 when that hit. I miss both.

I'm going to buy me a g1 again just to have I loved my keyboard I was competing against the since way back then lol

My G1 was the longest I've ever had a phone. Bought it shortly after launch and kept it until a year ago. I had no thoughts of upgrading at all until she was run over. It was just so... opposite aesthetically of what we look for in a mobile device. It was this huge brown block with a Jay Leno chin and weirdly designed hinge but I loved it.
I had my G1 ever since the 1st day of release from T-Mobile. This is the longest phone I've too. I've CM 6.0 and it really does show it's age. At some point I tell myself I'll break it into two (2) pieces when I get new phone. It's so slow I even having problem loading my map. However, my wife's BB pearl 8100 broke so she saved it's life.

Amen to that. I don't know how many times my g1 took a spill across concrete. And yet its still there on my dresser like a soldier, my wife wanted to give it to her brother but I told her she was crazy. That's the father of android , you treat it with respect!!!

I got the G1 on launch day and to this day I still say it has the best keyboard on a cell phone ever. The spacing I used to burn through text messages and emails no problemo. I did end up getting an N1 via Clist and I love my N1 just as much as my G1. I will never sale either of them. Once LG fixes their G2x issues then I will make the jump and my N1 will sit at the base of my monitor so it won't be forgotten. Ever so often I will boot it up and load the latest Cyanogen on there smile at it and then turn it back off.
Agree with all of you here, I got an iPhone the first month it was out, then later ditched it for a G1 because it was more hackable and had the best keyboard I've ever used on a phone. Early on with Cupcake it was horrible compared to the iPhone, but Android got better so fast that I never looked back. And even with Cupcake it still did things the iPhone couldn't at the time, like stereo bluetooth.
Other than the lack of a physical keyboard I'm loving the G2x though. But think I'll keep my G1, and see if I can get Arch Linux running on it.

Wel... I mainly use it for an alarm now. Battery lasts a long time when it doesn't need to look for any network connection. I'm going to keep it because it is the first android phone.
I'd still have mine if it wernt for crazy Las Vegas, Check sig... I do love my G2x though, just wish it has a querty keyboard, touch screen only blows.
The g1 was definitely an awesome phone. I had mine from week of release till the day of g2x release. It was overclocked, had sdext partition, and cm6. Gave it to my father. Its his first smart phone. He enjoys it now. Although it still works fine, I may replace the housing. I took that tphone to hell and back and it still lives on. O I do miss the trackball and keyboard though.

sadly disappointed

when i got this phone i loved it, it was fast, GB was coming "soon" and it seemed as though development would be coming in strides. 2 months later, i'm not even using it, back on the nexus one. the battery issue and screen discoloring have just taken it's toll. maybe it's me being nitpicky, maybe it's me loving to have a ton of roms to flash and play with. or maybe it's that 2 months later there isn't even really ONE GREAT rom to have on it... CM is even not a good solution at this point. anyway, it's being retired, showed a lot of promise, but as i thought when i bought the phone, it's an LG and there won't be development like there is for HTC. sure at the time everyone was weary of htc's future with their bootloader policy. 2 months later we have word the sensation and all future devices will ship with unlocked bootloaders and they're even making sense open. not comparable to me, even if you don't like sense, there will be rom'age going on for the sensation the likes of which haven't been since since the nexus one. so i'll be selling the g2x on ebay or trade in value at a store, really i wanted to love it. anyone else feeling this way?

Nope I'm loving mine. Did you try Ultimate G2X rom? Its been the most stable for me. I don't have any issues running this rom. I've had this phone for about a month now. I considered going back to my N1 at one point but I think it was just because that's what I was used to and this phone is different. Now I wouldn't trade it. The phone is a beast.
And I believe that development has perhaps not taken off so rapidly because developers are waiting to see what the Gingerbread release brings to the table. That's just my theory anyway.
How much you gonna sell yours for?
I think I'm gonna get the sensation. I really did not want to because I love the g2x but I think I may have to. First few days had zero problems now starting to have freezing issues. I've always been happy with HTC so I'm excited to try it.

An official ICS release. \\This is not news, tips or how-to's.\\

I better get an ice cream sandwich after having to deal with your crap HTC. This device was full of flaws when I bought it. That was inexcusable after paying top dollar for it. Verizon (Ripoff Mobile, Inc.) was too uptight to do anything about it. I would not be surprised if all the official talk was nothing more than hot air in the end. At least developers are working on a version. I am so glad I finally had some time to get root permissions on this phone. Did you feel betrayed after buying your TBolt? To be honest, I would have bought a marked down model if I had of know ahead of time what was going to happen.

Easy killer. My phone has worked mostly fine since day one. Sure there were some software issues (random reboots due to the LTE radio, GPS, the most annoying), but that is to be expected when you buy bleeding edge technology. This was the first Verizon LTE smartphone, EVER.
That being said, the device is still on par with other top devices today. I haven't upgraded, because I haven't found another device I like that much better than this. The Nexus is nice, but I'm not big on the light flimsy build of those phones, plus samsung is notorious for poor reliability. Motorola screen's have been awful so far, or I would have considered the Razr Maxx.
Bottom line...why don't you cry about it...
BTW, there is nothing special about ICS. Sure it's nice to have the newest thing, but there really isn't that much to get excited about. I still don't understand why honey comb and ICS got rid of the search button. I use that thing constantly.
I have to say I've been 99% happy with this phone since release.
The 1% was the odd rebooting issue I had for 4 weeks in aprilish.

Honestly I've liked this phone since I first got it, battery life sucked but that was nothing rooting and loading a rom couldn't fix. Other than that I'm still happy with my purchase.
I especially like it cause me and my girlfriend got phones from a good batch, handles low voltages and overclocking even up to 1.8 (not needed though) perfectly.
Thanks to all the developers who have been developing for the thunderbolt since day one, and all that are continuing to do so!

Let's see.
1. The phone was the Flagship phone for LTE and was released with Froyo.
2. The phone was buggy at release and still shows some issues.
3. Not everyone's phone was "perfect out of teh box". Some of us had to get replacements multiple times to get a *good one*.
4. ICS does have improvements over Froyo and GB.
5. Official OTA release of ICS will allow devs to create much better ROMs for this phone, rather approaching it by piecemealing parts from other Official ROMs.
6. Lastly, this phone was sold at a premium price and VZW's/HTC's support has been lackluster to be kind about it.
Note: I don't know the OP from Adam, but your experience, like mine, is anecdotal and not indicative of all others. VZW screwed the pooch on the roll-out and
HTC screwed the pooch on the releases of updates, support and finally, by rushing the damn thing out the door before it was ready.

That's with any phone these days. I haven't had a single smartphone I haven't had to replace for one reason or another.
On a side note, the Tbolt isn't the only flagship phone with problems. The Galaxy Nexus has really bad call connectivity problems from what I hear, and that's supposed to be the MAIN function of a PHONE. lolz
All i will buy is htc. I know updates are slow to come. I also dont care. The newest isnt always the best, there are usually a fresh set of bugs to work out. That being said, the devs here and other sites give me enough variety to satisfy me. If you dont like the process, learn to code.

I'm sure HTC is reading your post right now
If you care, go call them and say what you said directly as it will do far more good for you and for the community.
I moved onto a Nexus, but I still use my Thunderbolt for development testing apps I make. Not even the Nexus is perfect though as the internal antennas are not as powerful at picking up data. My db is usually 10-15db worse than the thunderbolt. However, I would not trade my Nexus for any other phone as I got tired of having to wait on HTC and Verizon for updates on the Thunderbolt.
i just lol at this thread.
Im an HTC fan. I got my tbolt on launch day and have never had an issue (not saying some havent) but I couldn't be happier.
Still have yet to find one phone on the market that has everything the tbolt has (not including dual core, which has not really impressed me) and still think it is a top 4g phone.
I would buy it all over again. We have received everything promised so far & it would be a nightmare for HTC to not give us ICS after they confirmed it...
I also have to say that Verizon did not screw up or delay the launch. There was never an official launch date given from them or HTC until the week before release, as is the norm with their releases. All other dates were made up by the internet and people.
HTC released about 6 updates to the phone between march and September, I think that is pretty good at keeping on top of it..

I got the TB for $49 bucks new when I dropped T-Mobile. Rooted it the day I got it home and have never had a single problem with it that I cannot blame on bugs in the ROM or me OCing the crap out of it.
Everyones phone is gonna be better or worse than the next guy. Did we get screwed by Verizon??? Show me where in writing the promise a full ICS upgrade and you will see thousands of TB owners lining up to sue the piss off Verizon and HTC.
If you are gonna stay up on the newest devices, Hopefully you are not paying retail for the devices, Shop around and you will be amazed at what you can find.
I have a galaxy nexus just sitting on stand-by cause i've had no problems with my tbolt, besides the dev slowing down i really have no problems with my tbolt and has been my favorite phone. while it would be nice to get ICS soon im not tripping about it, my contract for the thunderbolt ends in december much wait and see what comes out by then.

The two people I know with a nexus have had quite a few issues with their phones.. biggest problems being being signal and when leaving WiFi they don't get data until turning their data off and back on... Point is what ever phone you go to there will be something that bugs you about it and the update that fixes your problem will never come out fast enough.. be happy for what you have..

i never get tired of forum drama, except that it makes me crave ham.
I haven't had a problem since day 1. I got home, rooted it and put liquid smooth on. I've always been one to have a new rom every week but this one's been so good with battery life and everything that I haven't even tried another one. I love this phone. On another note, my brother got the same phone and has had problems. Just like any other electronic item, you might get a dud.

Aw man... I'm excited about this phone all over again.

I bought this phone maybe two months or a month and a half ago. At the time, I had no idea that root was impossible. I also own a Play Store Galaxy Nexus, so after being so free to do what I wanted with it for so long, the One X was giving me anxiety fits (anxiety over a cell phone, yes I know).
I don't really need two phones, so I should sell one. Which one though? The HOX is a monster in every aspect, but I can't fiddle with it. The Nexus is so nice in that arena, but the camera is borderline putrid and the screen is sort of dark. Plus I have good eyesight, so the Pentile nature of the screen boasts its presence at every turn. It runs everything pretty well and gets updates very quickly. The development is second to none. But the HOX. That screen. That camera. It has LTE. That snapdragon. I'm going to have less "spending money" available to me soon, so I want the phone that's most futureproof. That's obviously the HOX. Software is important. So what do I do? Hold out for the next Nexus? Sell both and get a Galaxy S3? I really prefer the HOX over the S3, so I don't want to do that. If only I could root the damn thing and put CM10 on it like I have on my GNex. Damn damn damn. I guess I'll be patient and see if the heroes of legend at XDA can work their magic.
I sift through the forums reading about this and that. CM10 on the HOX has a bunch of wakelocks? Wifi problems? Man, is it worth it to wait or should I just sell this thing while the prices are good? AT&T is purposefully crippling my baby. The one phone I want and I'm at the mercy of damn AT&T. Why can't HTC have the sort of power necessary to stand up to carriers like that fruit company from California? If only.
And just two nights ago, BAM. I worked until 12:30AM and have to return to work the next day at ~4:30AM, not to mention wake up at 3:30 so I can shower and shave with time to pick up a coworker at her place. It's 1:30 and I really ought to get some sleep. But I'm not finished with this delicious beer yet. Guess I'll check XDA in the meantime. Oh god... "Exploit found" says the bounty thread. Welp, so much for going to sleep now. So after fighting with both my computer and my phone for a while, my bootloader is unlocked. I don't know how to root yet because this is my first HTC phone. But we're off to a good start. I get an hour and a half of sleep and come home from work, tired and miserable. Should I nap? Hell no, I need TWRP. To XDA! Hello, custom recovery. Now I need root. What's this? A flashable SuperSU .zip? Hmm... let's try it. Better install a root check app since I don't know how to tell if I have root otherwise. Success! Well damn it, now I'm ready to flash the CM10 zip from Goo manager. Oh, no I'm not. I have to flash the boot.img with fastboot first. I've never done this before (GS2 and Gnex were my previous phones) and I don't know what the hell S-On is, but whatever. Let's do it. Good Lord, it worked. I'm one step closer to the love child of the Gnex and HOX that I've been so long waiting to adopt. Now I can flash the CM10 zip? Alright, let's do it.
And here I am. This is what I've been waiting for. After switching my sim card between my HOX and GNex almost every other day, I can finally leave it in one phone for a while. The ROM I'm running is labeled "experimental," but it really seems to be anything but. Aside from some visual quirks and some in-call echo, I've had practically zero issues using this phone. The battery life is comparable to stock, and while it seems to be lacking some of the butter of the CM10 Gnex nightlies, it's just fine for me. Fast. Stable. Powerful.
So this is me gushing over the devs here at XDA. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication to righting what is repeatedly wronged by the juggernaut telecoms here in the US.
While most people hate AT&T for locking the bootloader, you can understand why they did it if you read the threads here about people flashing incompatible roms and hard bricking their phones. Especially this guy:

To the OP, I felt the same type of excitement when I saw it. I appreciate the time and effort put into this exploit and anyone who may have helped. It's even more exciting that theres awesome people who freely release these to the public so that awesome ROMS can be put on. I was so ticked off with my locked bootloader I almost switched it out for a motorola atrix HD. The first time I took it back was legit though, it had the muffled voice syndrome, and the phone was only 6 days old, the corp store tried to give me a refurbished phone! ... I refused it and got a new one, and that one had battery issues, had to take it back a second time but finally got it straight right on the day of the root exploit. At the end of the week if I got any spare change I am definitely going to donate for the hard work it took and the time and patience.

LOL, good quote find.
On one hand yes, I can understand why a company may lock down a bootloader and I am sure many companies going forward may get the same dangerous idea. Maybe its true intentions is to protect people from bricking the phone or wasting their time with claims etc .. but on the other hand imagine if you bought a computer and Dell or HP comes in and says, well we locked down the firmware we dont want you putting any other OS in there but microsoft. Also, on top of that we dont want you using any other video cards besides an ATI card .. to prevent you from this we locked down the firmware. It's poisonous to creativity.
I believe in open source and feel saddened when we get locked bootloaders. I love the Android OS, I feel it should be completely open without any company interferences so that many great devs can continue to create and modify the existing OS/ROMs. Its a two sided coin.
I really am loving XDA, so much useful info, so many things to learn.
Lmao I nearly messed myself when I first saw that thread. That douche is never gonna live it down.

Stories like that kind of worry me, I just got the phone and love playing with Nova Prime but have dug into rooting it yet until I read more about it.

Everyone is guilty of the childlike excitement you get when you successfully root a new phone and see that first Rom you want to try

Warning to those with T-Mobile Warranty

Last week on Tuesday I decided to get a warranty replacement, now... I'm well aware that these are refurbished phones and that they can be damaged, etc. T-Mobile, however, assures you that they are to appear "Like-new". Well, the device came the next day as promised and what do I see? 10-12 dead pixels and... spotting behind the screen... like WATER DAMAGE! At this point I'm thinking... "Wtf T-Mobile?" So I give 'em a call, they tell me they'll send out another and that they are sorry for the inconvenience... Well, this time Friday rolls around and the delivery comes... I grab the box and get ready to open it with my Partner, jokingly I say to him... "Let's see how messed up this one is!" and I open the box... Well, the second one they sent has a LARGE chunk out of the MAO in the bottom left corner of the device... like it had been dropped. I'm pissed at this point... I call T-Mobile and because it's a defect in the "hardware" I had to take it down to the store to get a rep to verify that the device was damaged (also still in the warranty box they send out) and at this point they take $25 off my bill and offer me yet another warranty replacement!!! UGH!! So, the new one is coming today... If it's messed up I am demanding that they send me a new one. I'm so upset at this point... My device I sent to them to begin with was damn near flawless other than (from what I could tell) software issues.
What do y'all think? I'm starting to believe they don't even perform these so-called "Quality checks"
Been there done that I had to go through 6 phones. they offered me a brand new Galaxy S 2 . But it's backordered so I decided not to do it

If I even get one more messed up one I'm gonna make them give me a new One S... I bought this phone, I'm sticking with this phone. They WILL give me a new one. Heh. Also, I came from the GSII... Don't do it... the DPI is weird and everything is HUGE on the screen. Lol. I didn't like it mainly because with the default TouchWiz roms you can't change DPI or the UI is all diff sizes and messed up... Now... On custom CM10 roms, etc you can change DPI and it looks amazing at like 200 DPI or so... but back then the bugs were too much to stay on custom roms.
Went through these with my wifes amaze. I demanded a brand
New one s and got it.

what are you going to do if they tell you to go pound sand?
I don't understand why you are warning people about their warranty...they are doing what they are supposed to be doing. I understand the frustration of having to keep getting a replacement, but at least they are cooperative and doing it. ..sounds like a good warranty to me.

they sent me 4 defective replacement sensation 4g's until i demanded a comperable android replacement... after a couple of other rep's and explaining to them why a nokia lumina is not a comperable device then asking for a supervisor they sent me my One S free of charge, I offered to send my sensation back but they didnt send a box to return it in.... Thats a Win in my book. I did have to call back twice to get them to take the charge for the One S off my bill, which they did
Yea, I've never had an issue with T-Mobile warranty...that's how I got my One S...I had a Sensation, then complained enough, and they upgraded me to the One S at no charge. It might be a pain to go through numerous phones before getting a good one, but you can't beat the fact that they overnight you a phone with just a simple phone call, great service.

Your talking about assurion right? cause theyre their own company. theres a big difference. and yea id be pissed to pay a deductible and get a messed up phone. the last time i had my phone replaced by them it was pretty much brand new so im sorry for your luck :/
Im more curious as to why you sent your original back, if all it had was a software issue?

Agreed. Doesn't make any sense. You would figure that since he's on XDA, that he'd try to flash a new ROM, reflash the original, etc, to get it back to normal.
Then again, some people are hardcore about not wanting to touch their phone's ROM. I on the other hand, am absolutely disgusted by HTC Sense and all the fancy pants bull**** it has. Simplicity, minimalism, and speed are where it's at.

It stopped saving screenshots (not a big deal) however, it shortly after started saving all photos taken with the camera as 0byte files. NOTHING fixed it. I even put the phone back to S-On and unlocked, re-rooted, redid the S-Off... Nothing helped. Kinda useless if I can't take pictures. I also tried many different roms.
Also, the warning was to say that if you need a replacement... make sure you can deal with going through 4-5 before you get one that is fully intact. The last one they sent me (#3) had the screen popping up out of the device. You could see the button backlights fron the side if you looked at it, got yet another coming tomorrow.
