I've asked this too and like you was still a little confused. Hope someone can shed an authoritative light on this.

You will get the OTA updates if you have the stock recovery installed as well as the stock rom.
When I first rooted to debrand from Vodafone to generic UK, I wasn't getting the OTA update for 1.50.401.1 when it was available, and it was because I still had clockworkmod recovery installed.
I flashed the original recovery, and the OTA update suddenly appeared.
I still had S-OFF.

Sorry, I'm a n00b...so S-off is okay but don't root yet?

I think both S-OFF and root are okay as long as you are on stock rom and stock recovery.
Definately S-OFF because I always have been since I debranded and have received 2 OTAs since then. I *think* I've been rooted too, but not 100% sure about that.

Hi,
If you have s-off rooted phone, why on earth do you want OTA?
A custom ROM should have the OTA function switched off.
It will only mess up your phone by mixing HTC updates with custom ROM updates.
Anything released by HTC will soon be incorporated into custom ROMS.
If you want OTA updates, then s-on and do it.

A lot of people dont load a custom rom after s-off. They have most likely run the Revolutionary tool to root then just stick with stock in which case OTA updates will keep prompting.
As previous post says you cannot update OTA if a custom recovery has been flashed. Go to the Sensation Android Development section and search for a pre-rooted version, download, copy to SD card and flash in recovery.

OTA ???

Hi!
If i`m s-off i can`t receive OTA updates ? sorry for question
As far as I'm aware, s-off means absolutely NO OTA. But you can, download the OTA zip and flash using stock recovery.

I may be wrong but my understanding of S-off just allows you to flash custom software like ROMs and recoveries. I don't think it has anything to do with you being able to recieve OTA updates. What hinders you from receiving OTA updates is the custom software itself. The device only looks for the OTA for the ROM it is running. If you are S-off and have a custom recovery but still have the stock ROM you should still get the OTA. You can also use any recovery custom or stock to flash the OTA if you download the zip file for it.
I'd head some people not getting it S-OFF, going back to S-ON and then getting it but might just be coincidence
Hmm. I thought stock s-off + OTA = bootloop?
Or is that a hangover from my Bravo days...

[Q] Yet another ISC update question

Hi,
I have successfully rooted my phone 2-3 months ago using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300 and all worked fine.
However I haven't flashed any custom roms or anything on it.
Now I want to upgrade to ICS. However I need to flash stock recovery, right?
I can only find stock recovery for 1.45.401.3 and I'm on 1.50.401.
Do I need stock recovery for 1.50.401 or can I just use the one for 1.45.401.3?
(I have tried to post in "ICS is now available (in Nordic countries)" without ant real luck.)
You're better off just going with a custom ROM based on the ICS build if you can't follow my simple guide in the General forum
What you don't mention is whether you have an original Sensation or the XE. If you're rooted then the OTA won't work.
YOU HAVE TO BE 100% STOCK (except for S-OFF) TO FLASH THE OTA MANUALLY
I can't be it more simple than that

Talking about simple. Isn't my question quite simple?
Anyway, I have an original Sensation (not XE).
The only thing on my phone that isn't stock is the recovery.
And I want to install the OTA over air, not with a file/rom dl from xda. The OTA update is pushed to me directly.
Then you need to get the stock recovery from the 1.73.401.4 RUU

Yes, thats what I thought.
How come I need 1.73.401.4 and not the recovery from 1.50.401, since my current version is 1.50.401?
Sorry, thought you said you HAD an XE. You need it from 1.50 in that case

If yours is the original Sensation the stock RUU is the 1.50.401.1

Yup.
You can download the entire RUU 383 mb. However do you know any link for the recovery file only?
Takes about 6 hours to download from filefactory if your don't have Premium account.
Here's the original recovery image from 1.50.401.1 - used it myself.

[Q] root + official ics = bootproblem HELP!

i have unlocked my htc sensation XE on htcdev.com then has it been rooted and i have installed cwm but then have i installed the original ics update and now stops the bootsreen at the htc logo on the white background without the "quietly brilliant". i have already been searching in many forums and i know i should install another rom through bootloader but if i try this it fails every time i try it, so does anyone know how i can install a different rom through bootloader?
the bootloader is unlocked, s-on, and the hboot version is 1.18.0000 .
You have the wrong hboot version. You need to update to 3.32 you can find it on this thread.
Yet another example of why you don't flash an OTA file over a rooted ROM. I wonder how many more we'll get before people get the picture...
i need hboot version 3.32? do you have the link? because i canĀ“t find it here.

i have tried this already but if i try it on my computer using htc sync: it doesnt work and the same with adb drivers. i get always error 155: unknown error and if i try flashing it with bootloader it happens nothing: its loading and then, it happens nothing.
The problem was not from flashing the OTA to a rooted device. The problem was flashing the OTA without the stock recovery. You need to flash the proper RUU for your device. Who's your carrier, and what RUU are you trying to flash?

Can't Install OTA Update on XE

I flashed my XE with a taiwanese ROM using SuperCID. I used to have a SEA WWE rom but I can only download the RUU for the Taiwanese one because my Ordroid 9.0.0 didn't have wifi on so I had to go back to stock. Now, there's this 3.33 update for the current rom I have and have downlaoded it in the OS for at least 5 times and failed at all of it.
I later changed my CID to HTC__621 which is for the taiwanese rom but the update still didn't occur. I only reach about a third of the update bar on reboot and I always see a red question mark on a phone icon after. I can't seem to find out why this is happening to me. Is it because I have S-OFF? I don't see how S-off would affect the OTA.
Can anyone help me?
Man what exactly are you trying to do are you trying to flash a ruu that's for the xe or just flash a ruu in general and get the ora update and if that's the case what update are you trying to obtain

You can only ugrade via OTA if you are on a completely stock ROM, htc OTA doesnt work on custom ROMs
Hi,
you should install RUU from your PC, then you should should put S-ON and only then you will be able to get OTA from HTC, here is How-To
