[Q] Upgrade from HTC Desire to Sensation? - HTC Sensation

Hi there Sensation users,
So I have the chance to buy a second hand Sensation for $300 (Canadian). Do you guys think this is a worthwhile upgrade (coming from a HTC Desire). Right now my Desire runs fairly smooth with Oxygen based roms, but the appeal of a larger screen and more app space is an appealing one I must admit.
I would need to unlock the Sensation once I get it. I found a thread or two discussing how to unlock a rooted Sensation, anyone have any comments if this worked well or not?
Any feedback or suggestions greatly appreciated!

if i were you i would stay on the desire and see what happen in the MWC if there isn't anything for you so buy the sensation it is a great phone

I understand the logic of waiting, but I'm not looking at buying the latest and greatest phone right now. I still have another 1.5 years on contract. I can easily sell my Desire for $150, so I'm almost seeing this as a $150 fee to upgrade devices until my contract ends (and beyond if the Sensation is worthwhile).
I don't want to spend over $300 for a new phone. I'm looking at this like an opportunity for a relatively cheap upgrade. The question being, is it worthwhile to do?

lol updating from your htc desire to the sensation is like updating from a rock to a tablet

Actually, my Desire only has an SLCD screen (Canadian release was several months later than it was in Europe, and we didn't get the AMOLED screen )

If you want a solid upgrade now then go for it.

Buy HTC Desire S

Hi!
Who will buy the new HTC Desire S ?
I will not buy it because if it is not in the upgrade path for me and I got my Desire at the end of the last October, but I encourage everyone who will buy it because if we disregard all the puke people spill especially over in the Desire subforum, Desire S is a device of superb specification and if I wasn't under contract, I would be getting one myself.

I pre-ordered one, but I'm half regretting it in light of the recent Pyramid leak.
If I didn't already have the Desire hd I would.
--- I am geek. Hear me squeek. ---
I pre-ordered the Desire last year, and currently trying to sell it in order to pre-order the S...
I think it just fixes the little details in Desire that made all us looking for custom ROMs.
More space for apps (that is THE most important upgrade for me), a front camera so that we can make video-calls through skype..., HD video recording (though HTC could have gotten a 8MP cam), and a more solid body that our hands will enjoy (I am still mad about that back cap on Desire that doesn't fit EXACTLY as it should be...)
I don't have any smart-phone yet, and I'm nearly at the end of a 2-year no-data contract with a shiny-but-dumb Samsung, so I'm almost certainly getting one.
The main issues with the Desire are:
Memory's a little too small to install many apps.
Battery runs down too quickly
Overheating and reboots
Well the new device has more memory, more internal storage, and a 45nm CPU which should draw less power and be less prone to overheating, so that would appear to fix most of the problems.
I'm also drawn to the idea of built-in maps and some of the other Sense 2.1 goodies. And Gingerbread too.
The only thing that might change my mind is if the Desire S gets priced a little too close to the Incredible S and I have to pay an up-front cost (on the contracts I'm looking at, the Desire is free).
I would buy one - if the price is right...

it was released in India a few days back & is available in some shops (but not all)
i think the price was 25500 (not sure about this though)
Sold my ol' Desire last month. And now did get the DESIRE S.
It's worth it. from the build quality to camera, dimension..I must say it's a whole new phone.
I really want this phone. I will get it when a NAM version is available. I hope TELUS or bell will pick this up. A perfect phone to replace my nexus one.

i guess that is true as the Desire S has a adreno 205 GPU & the processor is 45nm fabricated
& the original Desire has a adreno 200 GPU & the processor is 65nm fabricated
so the Desire S is faster GPU,less power hungry & also produces less heat
the Desire S also has better 3G capabilities, more ram, more rom, better camera (even though both are 5 MP),a front facing camera,a slightly better battery
the desire S also does not have any axis swapping bug like the original Desire & supports multi-touch with at than 2 separate points
so hardware wise its much better than the original Desire(i guess its better software wise too but i don't have the device yet so cant say )

ur rite kartkk.Desire S was released last week in india. But rite now it is not available in market.Only Flipkart selling it on preorder at 23,749/- bucks
I just did. Sold my HTC Desire for 300€ (433$) to a friend today and ordered a simlock-free and branding-free HTC Desire S muted black for 430€ (621$) online.
I am gonna miss the real hardware buttons (for waking up the device using lockBot pro), but I think I will not be disappointed. And the black color rulez! Hated that brownish ugly bronze of the Desire.
=)

Anyone come from a desire?

As title suggest, has anyone upgraded to a Sensation from a Desire, If so what are your opinions/views?
I have and im slightly underwhelmed by the Sensation Maybe I was expecting too much but the only advantage i can see is a larger screen and a faster phone.
Maybe i need to give it more time?
How about a massive improvement on internal storage?

Hey, nice to see you again 325i
Yes, there are quite a few of us who came from Desire.
I felt the same as you, underwhelmed. After some time you realise, yes, you were expecting too much. Sensation is a better phone, but not THAT MUCH better. Desire is one of the most supported phones by devs, and it had s**t load of ports which is great. Sensation is not going to he like Desire unroll there are a lot newer phones out, like another 10 months I reckon, with newer sense version. Sensation is going to have a lot longer life than Desire due to hardware being on par with newer phones longer than Desire was. Quad core is not going to change much. And I'm sure that Senny will support next Android version easily, and probably one after.
Just enjoy using it, it a good phone, but far from groundbreaking as much as Desire was.

What were you expecting?
I did the same as you some time ago. The desire was very stable and the sensation has severel minor problems but the adequate on board memory of the sensation was, in itself, enough for me!
Hi, I've just got a Sensation xe. I came from a HTC HD2, then a Desire, then a Desire HD. As I always pass the handsets to my completely non tech' savvy family who are not delicate with their technology, I've never rooted / flashed and always remained on stock just in case of warranty requirements. I love the extra on board memory of the Desire HD / Sensation Xe and look at each phone as step in the right direction. They're always familiar and do everything I could possibly want of them (except last 2 or 3 days on the battery) so I'm more than happy with both build quality (and warranty work by HTC, can only speak form experience but very slick when I needed to use it) / Sense etc. The only thing and it is minor, is I just wish I could get the Desire HD keyboard onto my stock sensation xe and despite what all the figures suggest, the screen in the xe definately "seems" skinnier than my Desire HD.
Evolution not revolution as they say and each small step is one in the right direction. (For me anyway). Each to their own but I can understand your feelings if you expected to go from Space shuttle to USS Enterprise!
Yeah dude, I get what u're saying. the desire is the same sort of device as the sensation, can run the same software. So not much of a scope for improvement in the user experience.
Let's see what's up for grabs in 18 montths when my contract expires.
I came from a Desire too, my XE has plenty of internal storage and a larger screen which is good. On the down side though, my phone signal is pants in comparison.

Thanks for the reply, as you say hopefully ill get used to it.
Cheers
I also came from the Desire and feel a bit underwhelmed. At first the biggest disappointment was the screen, that seemed washed out compared to the Desire's amoled screen. After about seven months with the Sensation these things are a bit of a let down:
- There is not enough RAM. Ever so often I get the white htc screen when pressing the home button. Anyone know if ICS / Sense 3.5 will consume even more RAM?
- The phone hangs from time to time - mostly while installing / updating apps ( Also RAM related?).
- Radio signal seems to be very unstable, jumping constantly between 1 - 5 bars ( even when on GSM only). It will also often skip between 3g and H, which never happened with the Desire (always either E or H).
Another issue is that there is a spot (~1x2 mm) at the center of the screen that is brighter than the rest. It's most visible on black/dark/medium dark screens, but also appears as a grey speck on a white screen. Its not visible on light grey background.
I'm consider sending the phone back for service/repair, but I'm not keen on restoring all my apps and settings either.
My friend got a Sensation on upgrade and intended to sell it to get a new turbo for his scooby but made the mistake of playing with mine before selling it.Now he has sold his desire and says that the sensation is way better than his desire ever was.Runs games sooo smooth and being the XE he loves the headphones included
A 4 months ago i passed my Desire to my GF and get Nexus S... in 5 days I changed with Sensation.
I never expected something revolutionary .. but it`s better phone next generation.
With more memory, faster dual core CPU, more adequate battery life (I used my Desire as a second phone due the need of changing 2 batt`s during the office hours. Now my Sensation`s battery is lasting about 10 business hours... and 2 days @ weekend)
There is still a tons of ponts that can be upgraded.. but it`s a technology/pricing, marketing, sales .. and so on decision.

and you don't consider those as major improvements? i do
the Desire was sexy, the Sensation is sexier
I was like this :
lg optimus one > desire > incredible s > sensation.
liked incredible the most, but sensation is much better regarding the dual core and bigger display. better memory performace, better cpu and graphics
(ICS is also promissing)
I'm not so sure, in hindsight I think I was happier with my Incredible S. The 4" screen was just the right size for me, the camera was much better out of the box, although the HD recording was only at 20fps and not 30. But to be fair, what phone has a good HD camera?
I've just come from the trusty old desire to sensation.
Rooted, s-off, ICS Rom etc etc added within an hour of
it being delivered
First impressions are looking good, nice to have a bigger
screen, feels a lot snappier, internal memory is a major
plus point.
Sitting the desire and sensation side by side you can clearly
see its an 'upgrade' not in massive ways, but an upgrade
non the less.
I've just put the desire back to stock to send away for a fix
before selling it, and to be honest I hate what it was out of
the box, how people ranted and raved about the thing ill
never know.
Think ill be sticking to HTC from now on, the desire was a
workhorse, solidly built, unlike other brands which feel like
toys, the sensation feels the same in that regard, feels solid,
looks good, specs that will no doubt be fine for the next year
or maybe 2, seems to be a good community behind it, like the
desire.
Yes the sensation hasn't left me thinking wow, what great phone,
but let's face it, coming from the desire, which is still an excellent
phone and is still holding its ground, I really don't know what could
be added to a phone at this point in time that would give the same
'wow' factor as the desire gave.
I think the 'smartphone' has come of age, anything from now on will
just be gimmicky, and slight upgrades to this and that, I don't think
anything is going to be 'groundbreaking' in the next few years atleast.
So IMO desire > sensation is a worthy 'upgrade' when you look at the
whole package and compare it to what else is available at the moment.
But I guess only time will tell..
I also came from the desire, then desire HD, now the Sensation.
I will usually wait until about a few months after a new phone has come out and then buy it on ebay or craigslist, then sell my old one. It usually only ends up costing me about $40 to upgrade.
While I am really happy that there are ICS roms for the Sensation, i'm not as blown away as when I first moved from the desire to the desire HD.
I do prefer the quality of screen on the sensation compared to the dulled out desire hd, and love the multi touch capabilities of anything above the Desire. Though HTC will have to up their game a bit as my next phone will be coming with a contract renewal, and if samsung puts out anything like the Galaxy SII X again with a quad core I might be jumping ship.

How many of you developers will be getting HTC's next flagship (possible HTC Ville)?

My myTouch 4G is falling apart, development is dry and I need a new phone.. I got lucky once by buying a device that once had a ****load of development going on but it's slowed down and dried up so much it's just meh.. I wanna go to another device now, and with MWC right around the corner it's a perfect time, but I'll only want to buy the HTC Ville if people are actually buying it. Is anyone, developer or not, buying HTC's next flagship?
If not... I may just pick up a Sensation
The only thing that would make me buy another phone is if this one brakes and I'm out of warranty.
Sensation had been a great phone but at the same time lots of hardware issues, so it hardware issues will have to annoy me pretty bad to jump ship.
I have been through about 6 Sensations because of dust under screen, dead pixels and bad build quality causing vibration, so if when my warranty runs out which is in April btw, my replacement phone is not up to my standards I'm changing to something else but first I'm going to read reviews and not be early adopter.
My replacement Sensation should be sitting at home and hopefully will be a good one.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
My next phone will also be HTC. I just love the Sensation, enjoy evey minute of it and having no problem at all(Hardware or Software)
The next flagship will probably be the Edge, a quad-core unit, unlike the Ville which will be an advanced version of the Sensation with a Dual Core processor.

What will be your next phone?

Hey guys,
I was just wondering what kind of phone you'll get after the Sensation (XE).
I think I will go a HTC Endeavour, because of the nice HD-screen, big intern memory and it has a good SoC (quad-core Krait will beat this so that's why I find this SoC just 'good').
I'd like to hear yours!
I'd probably upgrade to that as well. But I'll wait till I get tired of this one, after all ICS isn't officially implemented for us yet.

I will see what will come out in MWC but I think I won't buy another phone till the end of 2012
Sent from my insertcoined sensation
I've only just picked up the sensation xe and have been busy trying out all the different roms, so i'm gona be keeping this phone for a good while yet, though the endeavour does sound real nice.
Probably HTC One X (Codename: Endeavour or Razor)... 4core soc tegra3
When I bought the Sensation 4G back in Aug. I told myself that I would keep it for at least 18 months. With a new car to play with and spend my extra money on, it looks like I will keep that promise to myself.
All the new and upcoming phones don't seem that great or that much better than the sensation. Also, they are all so big. The size of the sensation is the biggest that I can withstand. The galaxy s 2 is about the same size but I prefer the qhd screen on my sensation.
Until they make a phone with minimal bezel, on screen buttons, and same size of the sensation, I will be keeping my sensation.
Hehe, drooling over the HTC Zeta concept device for a while now. Damn thats a sexy design!
Nokia 3310 period. Nothing less nothing more!

yep, sensation already a highend device anyway
I have my Sensation since December, i'm pretty sure it will last till the end of 2012! When i bought it I didn't look in here and i retain myself lucky with all this DEV stuff going on.. So next time i'll buy a phone, apart from tech specs, i'll take a look at the forums here since i won't get a phone unable to be unlocked and customized as the Sensation!
By the way, the Endeavour looks damn good with that quad-core
To me, the Sensation with Sense 3.0 and 2.3.4 and the Sensation with AOSP Android 4.0 are two different phones. I flashed Virtuous Inquisition beta1 last night and as far as I'm concerned, I got a brand new Sensation since then.
Personally I've had enough with dust under the screen (this is my 4th HTC phone with this issue) and HTC's leisurely attitude towards releasing updates--not to mention forcing Sense on us. I had made peace with holding out for HTC to release their ICS update (so the devs could put together a complete AOSP rom), but then I noticed the dust after just 3 HOURS of carrying it in my pants pocket. Seems minor, but it was the last straw for me.
I finally broke down and bought a Galaxy Nexus from Expansys. So long HTC.

Keeping the S4G for now, since it rocks with ICS 4.0.3 cooked roms! And waiting on Official ICS soon...

Why so dramatic? Its been on EOL status for over a month. This is completely normal as it, and the Amaze 4G, are being replaced by the One S.
Well the sensation and desire hd (and EVO 3d) are still on sale in the UK (on display in carphone). I guess the EVO will go first, and the sensation will become like the desire hd.

Slowly? I think the progress is blazin! Lol, but ya i agree after a year or so its time to upgrade anyways.
No point upgrading unless you love the stock HTC software, it's why I waited until the sensation had been out a year before buying one - to let the developer and knowledge base build up so I could flash a ROM the moment it arrived.
The sensation will still be sold and supported for years yet, the new phones don't add any killer functions so why bother? HTC are finding out that releasing a new phone every six months destroys brand loyalty, not increase it - hence their drop in profits.
Rooted and running an ICS rom, the sensation is still one of the best phones you can get. There won't be any huge strides made this year in cell phones. Maybe the iPhone 5 will be exciting, but probably not either. The sensations CPU is fast.
