I wanted to learn the manual ADB method suggested by JCASE in the developemen forum, however i've had trouble understanding, seting up, & using ADB.
I have rooted two two htc eris phones before with JCASE's simple one click root method, so that doesn't realy count. I also roote my Moto Droid, but that was a file that was downloadable by the phone it's self, so that was pretty simple also.
The thunderbolt root seems a little more complicated for my knowledge level, so I've decided to go about it using a youtube tutorial called How To: Root A HTC Thunderbolt ( Easiest Tutorial / Step by step .

I followed the same link to my phone and it is at 12% in less than 30min. Can't i Just download it it my phone then copy it to my pc? First of all, don't use easy roots. If you insist on it, then yes you can download on your phone then transfer it to the PC. Check the MD5 to ensure the file is good. As far as where to put it, I am sure the tutorial should tell you.

You should YouTube a video called "thunderbolt adb setup" or something. Set up the Google driver, fix the config file so it works with the thunderbolt (google adb thunderbolt and its one of the first links). The rooting software shouldn't take that long to download, even on slow dsl...

Wish people would read before responding
on auto root when i get to the step of pressig 1 it responds that "ADB is not a vlid internal or external......" what does adb have to do with auto root? please help me root my device.... thanx for every ones help, ~Dave
I replied to the other thread but if you insist on using the auto root I can only say this:
The auto root script does EXACTLY what is described in JCase's root sticky. It just automates the process so less user interaction is required. (i.e. It types in the commands for you) That is what it has to do with adb.

Which is the reason the only advice I had was to tell him what the auto root has to do with adb.

Exactly. I did the rooting (and eventually unrooting) manually by simply copying and pasting the commands from the tutorial jcase wrote up into ADB. Process of rooting took me roughly I'd say 25 minutes but honestly its not that hard. Just follow the steps and you'll be just fine.
Oh and unrooting took me all of four minutes to do lol.
Search YouTube for "HTC Thunderbolt root". Find the tutorial by Nat3Mil, explains step by step starting with how to set up adb all the way to installing the custom recovery image. Don't get overwhelmed just take your time. Probably takes about 45 minutes give or take. He did a handful of videos including flashing roms, radios, and kernels. how are we to know what is wrong when you are using a tutorial posted on youtube as your guide?
Most of us used jcase tutorial to root. Really, it is very simple to do. You probably don't have the files in the right spot on your pc, or you don't have adb in the right spot.
Wow ok aside from the pricks that are not helping...make sure your phone is in charge only, debug is checked, and make sure you have the HTC drivers installed on your PC, if you downloaded the file onto your phone I'm assuming you didn't install the drivers and that what's probably wrong. Here's the link if ya need it, also make sure you haven't done the latest update if you did its not going to work.

Dont know if you know this but you have use the rear usb ports on the pc or the program doesnt read it also need the htc sync drivers

That might be the case with your pc, but usb port has never mattered on my desktop pc, laptop or from within a virtual machine. Perhaps if you attach to some sort of weird device usb like a monitor's usb ports it might.
I would advice the OP to read the tutorial in the development section that's stickied and as a fallback for more information, find a youtube video that explains the same process. I don't know of any links offhand, but I'm sure a 2minute search or less will make a couple show up that do basically what you see in the tutorial sticky thread. However, I would not use the youtube videos alone.

Not true on my PC. Sounds like your front ones are messed up. In response to the OP simply watch a youtube video. You are really going to want to learn ADB instead of using one of the auto-rooters. You will still need an ADB connection either way as it is just automated.

Nobody was trying to be a jerk, but there are 19 different auto root scripts that all have a pretty high possibility of failing at a random point. Leaving you with no clue which step things went wrong at. This makes it really hard to offer any help aside from telling them it is a much better idea to do it the "long" way.
So OP I apologize if you took what I said as being rude. It was not my intention. I was trying to answer what I could without giving bad advice about the problem with the auto script.

I agree with most everyone else's answers. Don't be afraid to follow the standard method jcase laid out. It's not hard, there's little margin for error so long as you follow the instructions, and it never hurts to learn a little adb knowledge. I came from a DINC, and I never used adb before (I rooted the DINC with unrevoked). It's simple. Getting the proper drivers installed is probably the hardest part for someone not experienced in this department, but even so, still really simple.
I'd avoid the 1 click root's. Like mentioned previously, basically all they are is a batch script that runs the same exact commands you'd be copying and pasting yourself if you followed the jcase tutorial. Given that, there's margin for error as you have no control over it unless you modify the script yourself. You're much better off to listen to most people's advice here and just follow the jcase method.

No with that program it needs to be the rear usb ports i dont know why its that way but thats how it is. Research it. All my usb ports are in perfect working condition. But for what ever reason you will get that error if you use the front ports.

Just download zip and place in system/media using a file manager like Root Explorer is the way to go...simply press and hold on file to extract all...then copy and paste the animation in the system/media folder. Make sure permissions are set to rw-r--r--

Try and not use root explorer... It is 100% safer to use adb and the command line to do things like this.... If you want the commands to run to do the job then PM me, and I will give you a rundown.
Too many people with this phone and other phones have had a TON of trouble with root explorer and other file manger apps making more than just permissions changes to files, things like corrupting the files, and even changing their file type bit.

Yep, I always try to use adb, I am faster with command line. Today I was using windows for a while after being on only linux for weeks. I kept trying to do things with command prompt that were impossible on windows, like "rm" and even more "chmod"

Are you running a dual boot Windows/Linux machine? Maybe that's what I need to do, something that can give me options at boot which OS to use. What about Ubuntu vs Linux, which would you recommend?

Yep, I have multiple OS's. Ubuntu, Windows 7, Chrome OS, and others at times.
Ubuntu IS linux. It is just one of many builds of it. it is one of the easiest to use, and most supported for android, so for a new user/android developer it is probably the best.

Along with working out my rooted stock 2.3.6 CWM backup this evening, I'll install Ubuntu afterward. I've found an easy enough tutorial on how best to install, so even a knucklehead such as myself should be able to follow it. Lol

LOL, it's not that bad, just make sure you have a windows recovery disk with you incase you screw up the MBR. I have done that, then nothing boots at all. Scary as hell. it's super easy to fix, but you need a windows restore disk. Ignore this and don't be scared unless something bad happens, then run to google and be calm. There is very little you can do that is not easy to fix. Just don't format your whole hard drive or something if you want it working with windows.

Partition the hard drive with the recommended size, right, and that's it? I think I have a recovery disk made, but if I don't or can't find it I'll make one first - before doing anything nutty...

yep in the setup you can choose manually partition hard drive and resize windows down and create a new partition for ubuntu. It will need to be pretty big if you are gonna get into development. mine is 30GB and I am running out.

I used the root zip from Jim's original ICS leak post, I assume you have the same. When I rooted, I ran the root.bat and waited until it said waiting for device. Then I enabled usb debugging and the rest took care of itself. *Note - The phone will reboot two or three times, but that's normal, and it should be rooted. That's how I did it, and it worked the first time. I hope that helps.

i too am having the same problem. in most threads it only reads download zip, run the batch file, phone in debugging mode, etc. but i cannot root it.

using windows 7 on my laptop, phone is in mass storage mode and is seen by the laptop. run as user and as administrator produces same effect. but folder at root of c: drive and desktop still the same.

download the new moto device manager 2.2.26 uninstall all other moto drivers install this and run root bat again and everything runs smoothly

downloaded drivers from here, thanks for the link. i had fxz from 2.3.6 to 2.3.5, but that was awhile ago. guess i just needed new drivers.
sent both you guys some thanks, and cogeary as well. no thanks to those other two. i have been following this forum since October 2011 and only recently joined, and that was to give altered some thanks on the awesome work he has done and the help he has given people like myself. i usually search first before asking and don't make many posts, as you can tell. i have seen the amount of ridiculousness in all these threads, and yes, even told other people to use the search. if you don't know the answer, it doesn't help to respond with a "just search" anymore...so just don't post. all those "just search" posts clog our s**t up even more than the stupid posts or threads.
adb out of date error
if you are getting this error, do not do the crazy things that are suggested, just copy the three new files list below in the zip, they are 2012 version and overwrite the ones that were in the root download

Sorry but when I post on those threads with a question I get flooded by idiots asking questions there are explained in the first post or later in the thread. So instead of making me look bad why not point you finger at some of the meaning less threads on the DEV side or the other ones in general.
I normally lurk here and have no issues. I provide feedback and important files if I have them. Its people like you who are quick to react that "clog" this place up.

Did you get it fixed? I have a couple of things for you to try. We had a few other have the same issue as you are, last week with the root script.
Are you using my script that I posted with the leak?
Try and unzip it and put the folder on your desktop or in C:\ and try and run it from there.
Also are you on Windows 7 or XP, if XP that might be an issue, all the exe's that I have included are most likely not 32 bit XP-able. I am not 100% since I did a lot of googling to get them. I just remember that most people that have has success were on Win 7 and did what I mention about unzipping to the desktop or C:\.

if its any help, i have windows 7 home on my laptop that i usually use with my phone. i used the batch file from your zip. i put it on the desktop, at the root of c, tried running as admin and as user, all to no avail. put updated drivers on an xp box and used your zip again and it worked fine.

I will try your script again when I get home. I'll make sure to back up this time I had to reinstall the leak to get it to boot. And I'm running win7 64x, debian, and Ubuntu 12.4. Haha maybe I'll do it off my raspberry pi jk jk
I'll let you know jim. I just built a new PC. Lost all my old data. RAID2RAID only saved a little of my raid0 from my old build. Oh well. Thanks for the quick response.
Also I tried windows 7 64x before with moto drivers and at the time I know my adb was working I have been making apps for a project I have reading from the serial port that my arduino writes to on USB host mode on an Acer tablet.

Try it on your ubuntu 12.04, if windows is still giving you issues. I have both an sh and bat in the zip file.
Also the Moto drivers don't really matter since all the stuff I use is lower level (adb, is all you need, with it's drivers that come with the SDK, and I have included for both the windows and Linux in the ICS root zip).
Okay this is REALLY freakin' irritating!!
I have been itching to cook up my own ROM in the kitchen...BUT I CAN'T EVEN USE IT!
I have tried installing it, multiple times (deleting everything each time to start fresh), and follow all instructions to the "T", and every single time I open Cygwin (after putting in the kitchen and renaming it) and "cd kitchen" enter "./menu", it always comes up saying "Error: The application 'gcc' is not installed - the kitchen will not function properly without it. Ensure you did not miss a step during installation! Refer to the Android Kitchen FAQ...", etc. (I could swear it installed devel > gcc when I installed Cygwin. Even used the Install all option and stuff...)
Checked out the FAQ and everything, but I still can't find it! Everything I try just doesn't work! Can someone please help?? (thank you)

Thats weird.....u on ubuntu? As far a s i remember i never had to install gcc it was already there....but i could be wrong.
Uninstall gcc. Go get it from official repo, retry. If it doesn't work this is more of a question for ubuntu forums theyll get anything working on a pc.

Haha, actually I'm using Windows XP Professional. (Though I do have it dual-booted with Zorin OS...)

Well, yes. It is.... I just figured it would be a lot more convenient to do everything on Windows instead.
There are times when it seems like things that were designed for Ubuntu don't really seem to work on the zorin distro. In this case, it probably will. I'm not really sure why I can't effectively connect to my phone though when in Zorin...maybe because there is a Kies for linux? I dunno...
I suppose I could try to install it though.
But anyways, more to the point! If cygwin/android kitchen was designed to also work in Windows XP/Vista/7, then why am I getting this error, and how do I fix it?

Thats why i use kubuntu. Though i can't answer your question, i do know ubuntu and windows hate each other, getting that stuff to work is gonna probab be a pain.
If zorin has got problems try emulating a small os (so u dont waste too much time) based off linux (lucid puppy linux) and see if that works.
I wouldve thought people would also be modding android stuff directly on windows rather than emulating ubuntu stuff...after all android is open source.

Yeah, it's dumb that we still can't directly modify Android from Windows and have to use Linux. Well, actually, not as much "dumb" as inconvenient. Linux is free, yet it's different. I think we should be able to do it anywhere due to Android being open source.
Oh well... I don't understand why no-one else is having this problem. They have the guides for it on here (beginner's guides to making ROMs and stuff like that), and it seems as though nobody else has had this problem...or nobody even uses Windows. orz

well many developers are also pc fanatics and experiment new oses and grow to like open soyrce/free ones more than windows. many java devs use linux oses. Thats how devs roll. I use c and i like windows so i do it all in windows, but i know the editor/debugging programs are better on ubuntu than those available for windows....still....windows is...too much to shut down at times...

You're probably right. I'm sure I'll be able to get used to it eventually, when I become a full developer. For now though, it's the learning curve. XD
Haha, yeah. That's good though. Windows is definitely enjoyable. (though I can't say much for W8. Ugh.)
So uh, I guess the Android Kitchen definitely works here in Zorin. Went to the menu without any problems. Funny still how it doesn't work in Windows....
You know, I'd probably have just skipped the whole kitchen thing and gone straight to development from source...but I'm not running on a x64 system, and therefore can't work on ICS and JB. :c
Soon though...very soon I will have all the parts to build my new computer, and not have to use this low-power laptop. >m>

Well, if I could go back in time 3 years I would be able to try and help you...I just tried it on Windows 10 here and everything works.
So, follow the instructions as far as even the cygwin_install.txt they provided. You should make sure you install /just/ the gcc-core and gcc-g++ when it tells you to tick the gcc (do not get the "cygwin gcc", idk if that did it, but just get the normal gcc). Follow all the others as well; far as I could tell the linux-util wasn't actually in utils (core instead I think?) but was already ticked, so don't worry about it unless it isn't.
After everything is done, make sure java is good to go and all, and cd to the kitchen location (just put the files in a new file, C:/kitchen/) and change directory to that. Then do the ./menu and it should work....
Also don't bump super old posts, not good. c: Either way I hope this helps. Real simple.
I really have no use for the kitchen anymore, since my GS3 gets CM nightlies (up to marshmallow? Wat!) and I have a Nexus 5X anyway so it's all gucci. But either way...yeah. It works to my knowledge.

I'm glad to hear it's working for you! Hope you have great fun with it like I did. ^-^
And for the custom recovery...I say it's not really worth it unless you're really serious and can code. Not sure myself how one would make such a thing that has that access, you probably should ask somebody who's actually made them. Otherwise I strongly recommend either Team Win Recovery Project or ClockworkMod. (I use ClockworkMod, but most say twrp is better)

Hey everyone,
I'm going to compile my own ROM from cm. I'm following the guide, but it just says I need a "reasonable amount" of ram and storage. They link to an android instruction page, which states:
"Note: It is also possible to build Android in a virtual machine. If you are running Linux in a virtual machine, you will need at least 16GB of RAM/swap and 30GB or more of disk space in order to build the Android tree."
I don't want to download source for every device, just d2vzw. How much should I set aside in my VM? I've already given it 3 GB of RAM and 2 of my 4 cores at 100%.
I've installed Ubuntu and updated everything, going to install the SDK next and adjust my VM size as necessary.

Why use virtual machine to run Ubuntu? Set aside a partition with like 100gigs and install Ubuntu on that. Then you can boot into Linux or windows whenever you want.

well the only thing about that is it can be a pain in the butt to get grub off sometimes if he dosnt want to use ubuntu longterm id go with the virtualbox route and u only need about 30gigs for ubuntu and 3gigs of ram is more than enough.

NAIL ON THE HEAD. The grub thing is a pain. I've dual booted before, have tried out Ubuntu 9 and 10 in the past...
Anyway, I went ahead and figured out the VM stuff (VM is something I've been wanting to learn about anyway).
Now I'm stuck at the part in the guide where I'll be extracting the proprietary blobs. When I try to run an adb command, it gives me an error. I'm pretty sure I have all the USB filter stuff installed/enabled correctly... Currently updating everything in Ubuntu update manager. Hopefully I can get it going soon. I'm excited to build!

I successfully built, now trying to learn to modify.
Also, am I right to assume that the build guide pulls from the stable code base? How do I set it up to pull from the nightly code case? That Google voice hack is a deal making feature.

Depends what branch you setup... Probably cm10.1 which will be the latest
