[Q] What should I do now that I'm rooted? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

I'm fairly new to rooting, familiar with jailbreaking (That garbage is too simple and chalked full of ad's). Not sure if the android market should be a main source for rooted apps, or if there's a website I should check out, etc. I'm just looking for lists of things to try, and suggestions by others. Any tuts or starter guides would be appreciated too.

The main thing is flashing a custom Rom. It does wonders for your phone. Just make sure you read the stickies for all the sections. You should be fine if you just read those.

Here is quick guide that will help on how to.

What do ROMS offer exactly? Do they include modified kernels? anything like that.

Read custom Rom threads. They have every feature they offer listed. Some offer overclock which is a kernel feature. Most have debloated apps. Most have ciq removed. They all offer different things. Like tweaks, different theming, etc...

I'm still a new Android user myself, coming from iPhone. I rooted and flashed the skyROCKeteer ROM. My phone has been much more enjoyable for me.
Since I've been rooted, I've purchased/installed, JuiceDefender, ROM Manager and Titanium Backup. I'd have to say my biggest change has been the great increase of battery life.

As a technician for Sprint PCS, I see very common software issues with Juice defender. It tends to cause data lockups, and issues with the phone being able to run applications, certain games , etc. Haven't used titan backup, since I don't really horde all my applications.
Are there any decent overclock utilities for the skyrocket? Or do I have to use a ROM with a modified kernel?

Well actually ....overclocking can be much more damaging then juice defender. But yeah you need a custom kernel to overclock.

go the opposite route, this phone is so wicked fast, try undervolting and underclocking, increase battery life

Make a back-up of your phone before performing any mod's or flashing it and manually back-up all photos, videos, bookmarks and etc. that is irrecoverable. Trust me!

[Q] I rooted my DROID 2 Global.... Now what? n00b ROM questions inside

I asked this in a couple other places, but haven't got any real answers, so let me ask the REAL experts.
So I rooted my D2G yesterday. I also did a Bootstrap backup, did a Titanium apk and data backup and even froze some of the bloatware. Now I'm thinking of getting a ROM and I believe Fission is the best and one of the few options for the D2G.
My n00b questions are:
1) Will Fission or any ROM have any affect on Exchange? Reason being, its a firm phone and my Outlook e-mail, contacts and calendar are 100% critical and if I can't access the Exchange servers, I'll stick to stock with frozen bloat.
2) What are the real benefits to a new ROM and what should I expect besides no bloatware? (e.g., will I need to reinstall a bunch of apps, will LauncherPro play nice with it, etc.?)
3) Are there any other good ROMs to consider with the D2G?
4) With the SBF out there and my backups, are there any concerns to reverse everything back to stock when I exchange my D2G? FYI I need to turn the phone back into my IT department to be used as a loaner, donated or thrown away.
5)Bonus question: Is there anything else I should do with my newly rooted phone?? FYI I have wireless tether, although I didn't fully try it out yet.
Thanks!
where did you get your bootstrapper? do you have a link?
I'm a n00b too lol

HERE. Good luck!
1. As far as I know, exchange should work just fine so long as you install the exchange patch from fission rom manager. I have my .edu email working just fine.
2. Extended battery life, less lag, able to start fresh with vanilla android, easier to customize, etc.
3. The only good rom for the D2G atm is fission.
4. So long as you have the sbf, the necessary drivers installed on a windows computer and rsdlite, you should be able to revert back to stock no problem.
5. I personally like to overclock the processor while undervolting it to extend battery life further. You should also look at launcher replacement programs like launcher pro, they really beautify your phone

Thank you! Especially about the exchange patch information.
Do you really overclock a 1.2gHz processor? As far as battery life, I ALWAYS have an extra battery with me, but if I can get 18 hours on one battery with basically minimal use, I'll be happy as a clam. I don't need to break records, but it appears that even since only rooting it and freezing some bloatware, I might be in good shape.
BTW I have LauncherPro and love it (see the end of #2 in OP).
Thanks again!
I overclock mine to 1350MHz, but I undervolt it as well, I can get a little over three days on one charge, and I have an extra battery, so that's almost a week
I wouldn't suggest it though, the process is overly complex since there isn't an "official" way to do it.

rusty , can u share your overclocking and undervolt setting??
On droid overclock, I have it set like this:
350mhz, 18mhz
800mhz, 40mhz
1200mhz, 60mhz
1350mhz, 67mhz
As you can see, to get the fsb clock, I basically get the non zero digits for the clock speed and halve it, at least that's the easiest way for me to set it up, I suppose you can undervolt it further, but I haven't found a need to

[Q] flashing with g2x??

ive been flashing my g2x with just roms but i a reed in all the other forms people say the flash a kernal and a rom, so y and how do u flash a kernal and do u do it before or after flashing a rom, and what is the best kernal???
Kernel is flashed after the rom. Probably one of the main reasons people change their kernel is to allow them to overclock/undervolt their CPU. It can allow overall better performance and battery life.
You just have to be careful when you're altering stuff at that level. You could end up with a very unstable system, and maybe not even be able to boot into your OS. Make sure you research first and know what you're flashing. Not all kernels are compatible with your phone, and of those that are, some only support certain roms. Just make sure you know what you're flashing and keep a working/stable nandroid backup on-hand in case you mess something up beyond fixing.
By all means experiment with your phone. Just be smart about it and have a backup plan if possible.
o well were would is there a thread on xda about them?
and what kernal would u use eagleblood 1.9 with? causer i love this rom but my battery is acting weird

If you read in the development section here and check the threads for the different kernels, each one lists the roms its compatible with. Trinity and Faux's kernels are 2 popular ones and they're both compatible with eaglesblood.
What is your battery doing? How is it acting weird?

I use Ultimate G2X 1.0 and I just use the default kernel that comes with it. Its a 2.2 stock-based rom and it just works. Decent battery life. To ensure long battery life though I use an extended life battery.
I haven't experimented much with different kernels. Read through the threads for the different kernels and you should get a pretty good idea of the pros and cons of each one.

Understand that development on this rom has ceased. That said, it's a fully functional rom and very stable. Its been my daily driver since May. I flash other roms on a regular basis to see if something better has come along. For me, Ultimate is the one. Its personal preference though. You may not like it. You may want gingerbread. The only way you'll know is to try.

[Q] stock rom vs custom rom

good morning,
i'm quite new on this phone even if It works fine for me with a stock rom 4.0.4 I would you like to understand if there is a good advantage to pass on a custom rom.
Please share with me your experience and answer with my few questions:
what kind of custom rom and kermel you have on?
which is the difference there is in term of battery life; performance; stability.
Thanks for your help
Welcome to the Nexus ... you're going to love this phone. With that said, you need to jump in and do some reading. There is no shortage of opinion on which rom, kernel, or even GB vs ICS ... is best. It very much depends on your likes, dislikes, etc. I assume that you have a gsm device, so make sure to flash the appropriate roms, kernels, etc. Lastly, there is lots of help available, but it's always best if you dig in and bring yourself up to speed with what's already been posted in these great forums. Good luck!

thanks mate,
after few weeks i tested it, i find this phone a very good one and I don't feel the need to jump in a custom rom. I rooted it, installed a busybox and the clockwork and I added some apps to eliminate some gaps like the missing notification when the screen is off (I installed the noled apk for it) or like a switch off or switch on of the screen using the power button (I used an apps called accendi scermo and I switch on and off the screen using the phone sensor). The only thing that miss on this phone is an fm radio offline. I'm still searching a solution.
Stock rom: more stable, less features
Custom rom: less stable, more features
Well if you want to be normal. Than good for you.
Now a custom rom and kernel can give you unlimited privilages to things you can never imagine possible. Undervolting your device to give you brain blowing battery life or over clocking to give you awesome graphics.
A custom rom like CM9 or AOKP (there are way more than two but im just listing the popular ones) is of course better than stock since... well if it wasnt why would they make it. A kernel links your hardware to your software, meaning you can do some tweaking in the middle. If you find the right kernel and rom mix you can have a wopping 15 days standby on your battery (eg CM9 and Matr1x Kernel).
Now thats just the basics. if you are interested and want more information. Just do a bit of research and reading in this forum and ask questions in those forums. Hope this helps.
ics 4.0.4 stock+ simple or thalamus kernel
Or Bugless Beast with one of those kernels

Are you overclocked? How many apps do you have installed? How many apps/processes are you running? Are you running the stock kernel? haha
I am on the stock kernel. I have not ventured into over clocking. Yet. I'd like to but it sounds very complicated as far as the research I've done.
Apps are quite a few. Know a good app to keep them from starting up?

Not sure if you have SD Maid (Play store) installed but I was using it completely box stock with great results. However, since you're rooted, it works so much better then. Phone stays nice and responsive.
It's a comprehensive app and if you don't have it but wish to, read the help guide. You can easily delete something critical. It's free but the pro version offers deeper cleaning and more optioning.
As far as your phone feeling sluggish beyond that, have you added or modified something? Maybe while back?
As far as overclocking, try SetCPU on the play store for overclocking but again, understand and research what the consequences can be if you abuse this feature.

[Q] Rooting and its basics

I've rooted one phone in my history of rooting - the mytouch 4g. I found it very unstable during that process thus my hold off of rooting until now.
I have a Nexus 5, thus me creating a thread in this forum. I know many will just tell me to google or whatever but I rather get someone's actual response to my post.
That said, what is the different between a ROM and a Kernal. And how can one tell if one is better than another?
I think I want what everyone wants in their phones - stability and extended battery life.
Thanks again.
a rom is the ui, it gives the user variables to adjust and can add some features. a kernel is the central control of your whole phone. it ties the cpu to the rest of your phone, and to your ui. the kernel is like the brain, where the rom is like the outside/skin of the body.
hiw do you know which is better? only by trying them out. some phones will like certain kernels better than others, and you wont know which until you try.
Hi,
Sorry to give you a link to explain what is a rom and what is a kernel, but anyway: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=ROM-VS-Kernel, for me it's a good start.
About battery life it's not the rom that will give you better or worse battery life (unless a "bug"), at least the kernel can play its role but it's mainly your use and settings, the apps you use...
If you have a bad signal reception or a rogue apps with a ton of wakelocks, whatever the rom or the kernel, it will be always the same thing.

I`am not rooted also atm, the device does everything that i need it to do to be honest. Rooting is handy and usefull if you want to use features or do things that cannot be done with the stock configuration. Read the first 4 threads in the General section well if you want to learn the basics of rooting.
