anyone know anything or heard about this device which is alledgedly due for release in October? Anyone used Asus devices? Are they good quality? Seems to be exactly what I'm after (Omnia with a proper screen)

Asus devices are of good quality, little worse then Samsung maybe though (I have both i900 and ASUS p525 now to compare).
As time goes on, better and better devices are announced. This one will be officially announced in October, so expect to be able to buy it around Christmas. At this time no doubt that some other better device will be announced from some other manufacturer, and so on

Omnia = odd and small screen res and apparently very buggy
So that leave me with the Asus.

I have seen issues with HTC not providing proper drivers for their devices... What else do you have against HTC ? Do you think other manufacturers are really different ? I'm about to change my phone, so i'd like to have your advice about this...

HTC hardware build quality is awefull in my experience. I have not had one HTC device that I have not had to return at least once. I treat my devices like the expensive equipment they are and do not keep them in pockets with objects such as keys or money etc.
Its a real shame as HTC design and specification is awesome, just they seem to use awefull and cheap components to build them.
I have a Toshiba G900 which is an awesome device but sadly lacks RAM and GPS. For these reason i did something I said I would never do and changed back to a HTC device - Touch Diamond (which is a downgrade on the awesome screen of the tosh) and without fail, the Diamond is letting me down. The coating on the top of the tempered glass is so easily scratched, its getting scratched by just putting in on a desk. The buttons have scratches, the back panel paint is wearing off and the bezel around the screen has what looks like a silver/metal patch showing through. All this I could expect from a device thats a year old - like my G900 - but not a one month old phone. Oh and the other BIG issue is that I cannot play music without a skip, pause or song chop! (this is all Touch Diamonds) This is not just my issue, everyone gets it, and if anyone says they don't, lots of us would like to know what your doing and how your doing it!!!!
I can only say that my Toshiba was excellent build quality but I cannot vouch for any other manufacturer, only to say that they can't be any worse than HTC!
p.s. remember, the X1 is being MADE by HTC and branded/customised by Sony, chances are, it will be rubbish build quality as well.
edit: the Driver issue is not just a HTC issue. For some reason lots of manu's put the Nvidia chipset into the devices and never actually "drive" it - including Toshiba. Just bizzare.

The Touch Pro has 288MB Ram vs the Glaxy7 with just 128MB, the Touch Pro has a keyboard, the Touch Pro has a bigger user community.

Other models I've been doubting but no go because:

- Sony Ericsson: I'don't like the buttons of the keyboard, I was always a Ericsson fan (later SE) but with this don't know. Beside if I've to choose between the Touch Pro and the Xperia l'll choose the HTC. More RAM and bigger community.
The camera is for me no point to choose. At least, that would be my last point. It's reasonable the camera is one of the choosing facts. But remind that Windows Mobile isn't good with photo's.
E-ten has new devices too, but that is Acer. My experience with the Acer notebooks are not good. Cheap silly things!
your forgeting that the Glaxy has a 5mp camera as well.... this is important (at least to me)

Actually i don't want a suck CPU in my phone that make it slow enough for dialing, browser internet / photos and watching movie lagging same as an old-style projector in classroom.
Yes, the qualcomm having ATI Imageon, but also no HW support both 2d and 3d, so no VGA now.
If this machine really using intel cpu, this should be cool and the greatest PDA phone ever.
asus quality..
i used to have an asus p535 and it was one of the best pocket pcs that i owned.
it was very powerfull and it does not hang.
the built quality was excellent and the color does not peel because it is melted with the plastic itself.
the GPS was sirf III one of the best reciever in the world.
what i want to say is that asus products are very good but asus lacks the marketing touch to sell its products.
galaxy 7 will be a great device ,i am sure and i am looking forward for its release.

I must admit, i'm already sold on the Glaxy even though I am growing positivley towards my Diamond again - despite its poor hardware build quality.

I like big screens, but I don't like software incompatibility...
My old (Now) G900 had an 800*480 screen and I only found issues with older versions of TomTom. Like it or not, I reckon this will become the new "standard" screen res and as such, people are/will develope code to handle it.
I have been using a Samsung Omnia for a few weeks now, and previously I used an Asus P525 for a little over 1 year. I still have the P525 (keeping it as spare).
Build quality: Asus is top notch as far as I am concerned, on par with my previous SE phones (P800,P900). High quality material all around on the P525.
Omnia is not bad at all, although the plastic case and back will get scratched quite fast, I think. There have been a number of complaints about Omnia units having to be returned for some sort or other hardware problem. Difficult to evaluate how serious it is as you only hear from the people having problems, not those that have not had any.
Software: This is where I think the Omnia is weak at this point in time: there are still a number of bugs in the OS (some major, some minor), whereas the P525 was rock solid (went from WM5 to WM6 no problem). Is it a result of rushing to market ? Nonetheless, Samsung is releasing ROM updates just about every month, so they are certainly trying... Flashing an Omnia is not an easy (or safe) process (no booloader method found to date), and a hardware initiated hard reset is very difficult to achieve (the only time I really had to use it it took me 30 minutes of button pushing to finally initiate the Hard Reset).
If the upcoming Galaxy7 is anything like my P525 and has the right specifications, and Samsung does not clear up a certain number of things that are important to me, I may very well switch.

I know they are poppping out of the woodwork now. My biggest thing is that the majority are really expensive. Like the new Toshiba announced today is $540. THat is why Either the Cruz or Archos will match all my criteria. But the nice thing is that there seems to be a ton of different options.

I've been disappointed with the IFA ones as almost all of them have 3G which means here, onerous data contracts or ridiculous prices w/o.
Archos underwent feature regression(e.g. no GPS), and has some whacked prices for the 70 & 101. The rest seem kind of useless to me too small and at least the smallest two don't have any way of expanding storage which makes them kind of useless as anything other than a portable music player.
The Viewsonic is the Olivepad one? Didn't seem to be all that great.
Toshiba Folio MIGHT have been nice, but that Tegra will likely make it expensive.
...just too many hawking 3G and not enough that have useful extras like higher res cameras, GPS, mics, and maybe bluetooth... i.e. I'm just meh'ed by IFA offerings... Witstech A81-E is still looking good and they just got another new fw release 8/31...

Damn that is expensive.
Im mainly looking for a ereader, web surfer, watch some videos on trips, and check my gapps when on wifi.
Check out the stream tv elocity pad. No 3g, but no gps ether. the reason why everyone puts on 3g is because it's the only way to get google apps on it, until google changes their requirements for google apps.

I think a 2Ghz CPU, as of right now, is over powered for android. I have a Gentouch78 tablet that runs at 600MHz and it seems to run OK. My 1GHz nexus one has had no issues, and I have it multi tasking several apps at once sometimes. It will get really hot, especially when I toss the car charger on it while its doing all that, but never seen it slow down to unresponsiveness. As for the HDD space. I dont use mine much for multi media, so 50gb would be overdoing it for me. Just the ability to have an SD card slot would be enough for me, that right there is 32 gb.
Now dealing with the android OS itself, this is where things are starting to get wierd. You have 2.2, which is really a phone OS, you have 3.0 which is really a tablet OS, and so the current samsung tablet is supposed to be 2.2 and will get 3.0, but now this 3.5 is where it gets confusing. Some of the stuff I have been reading is stating that 3.5 is going to be an entirely different OS completly, or at least have an entirely different usage beyond that of a tablet or cell phone. And that you will have to buy an entirely new piece of hardware to use it because samsung already said their current tablet wont get 3.5 when it comes out, but i twill get 3.0. This is making me think that 3.5 may be the google chrome OS, which from what I am hearing I am not a total fan of. So basically, the idea as I understand it, is that the hardware will just be the input/output device and all the applications will be stored on teh cloud as well as the work being done will be done on the cloud. This is all nice and dandy until either 1) everyone gets on all at once and bogs down the system or 2) the cloud or network goes down and the device is worthless. Thats why I like android right now. If you have no data connection you can still do work. Now some things on android that do run off the cloud, like the GPS, if you need to reroute and you loose the data connection, since all the work is done on the back end you cant get anywhere until the data connection comes back.
Since Android is a full fledge Linux OS I think it can do whatever you need it to do, you just need to port the apps over. So i think it can replace a laptop, but there will always be certain things that make a laptop easier to use that are unrelated to the android OS, like a real keyboard. With phones, for instance, I still feel more comfortable texting on a physical keyboard on my blackberry then I do on the virtual keyboard on my nexus one. Now can I develope a web page, photoshop some images and toss them on the web page, with android? If they ported the apps over then sure why not, the physical keyboard will just make it easier. But as soon as you start talking windows 7 you are changing the entire hardware requirements (ARM CPU versus an x86 CPU) which will allow you to run your favorite web development software and photo editing software, and now your 50gb of disk space will be all chewed up with the OS and applications but no room for media, and with the new hardware requirements the price goes up (not like the samsung tab isnt expensive either) but then the bottom line is its still awkward to use because of the lack of a physical keyboard.
Now I am just using web development/photo editing as an example, simplier tasks, like email and web surfing, will require less and are easily done on the android OS. But the bottom line is to use the right tool for the right job, outline your requirements and find a solution that best fits your needs. I believe that android will be a decent laptop replacement if all your doing with your laptop is surfing the web and sending email but if your trying to do less casual stuff, like photo editing and web development, then android right now is obviously not enough, but in the future it might be. It goes back to the age old question, does hardware push the software industry, or does software push the hardware industry?

maybe..but for me I have no use for GPS on a tablet....but that is just me. Just like all new technologies price points will get better with maturity of product.

Hmmm.... looks like they took a screenshot of an android VM running on ubuntu and photoshopped it into their device. If they don't have any pictures of the tablet in action, I'd be really dubious...
Finally I ordered this one, so will post some review when it arrives.
So I tested tablet I ordered few weeks ago and realized that this is the same device as Advent Vega. I test quadrant benchmark and got 2200 points without any customization of rom.
Screen is nice and response is fast. I can recommend this one.

I've been using my HTC Touch Pro with WM 6.1 for about 3 years now. Great device with a lot of free apps, but the time has come to put it down and replace it with something. I need some feedback on new devices/OS. Here is what I need:
1. Slide out keyboard. This limits my choices but is a must have feature for my needs.
2. Larger more responsive screen than Touch Pro. TP has a small screen, so there seems to be many choices.
3. More responsive touch screen. I can't seem to fine tune my TP screen and the OS seems to bog down sometimes.
4. Ability to run on the 3G and/or 4G network of T-Mobile (and/or ATT)
5. Unlocked or simple to unlock.
6. Good amount of ram, rom. at least as much as TP. More is better.
7. Decent battery life with replaceable battery as I also carry a spare.
8. Advice on OS. I've always used MS O/S but the android OS sounds great.
9. Availability of free and varied apps. There are so many available for TP, biz, games and travel.
10. Easily customizable, without flashing of roms. I have become lost in the ocean of roms for TP that I just stick with stock and eliminate all the extra vendor crap. I'm really not able to get my head around cooking though.
11. I'd like to be able to sync address book, calender and files with outlook. MS, keeps eliminating that ability from their new OS. Why do they do that?
I know this is a lot to ask, but I'd like to hear what others recommend as I don't know much about android, but many devices are sporting it now. I don't know if I like the look/feel of windows 7. Is Mango any better?

These are some of the current selection of high end droid phones with a Querty board. If you'll just wait a lil longer there are likely to come out some more phone with a dual-core 1.2Ghz.

Got my very first Android device abou 18 months ago.
At the time went for the Xperia Sola for its sensible size and decent specs (though I came to find 512MB of RAM a bit too shy for all the bloat Sony put in it).
The device hw suffered a partial hw malfunction (lost phone signal and screen was barely useable) but I kept as is for about 6 months because I needed for GPS navigation. Got back to my old WinMo 6.1 as my main device (and was amazed it could muster so much with its 600MHz CPU and less than 128MB of RAM) but recently decided it was time to finally get it repaired - just got it back this friday (and underwent the necessary root and bloat removal to actually make it usable).
Haven't been following tha Android scene as closely as I used to but it's hard to miss that devices are getting huge... things seem to be evolving in the direction of the phablet - a phone to big to carry in the pocket (or that will completellt fill it / stick out) or properly hold but still too small to properly replace a tablet (at least with a 5' screen).
My phones (both WinMo and Droid) perfectly fit my car's dashbord which has a rectangular inlet of less than 125x65mm and in the foresseable future I'd prefer aquiring a device that can sit there during trips... Thing is that currently one can only find feeble entry phones around this size (with specs worse than my current device).
Are small phones destined to die (or be extremelly underpowered?). Can anyone currently point a device about the size of the sola (116 x 59 x 9.9 mm), with better specs (CPU, RAM), and screen above 3.5'?

I have a small smartphone from 2011, Samsung Galaxy Mini GT-S5770.
I am pleased with its practicality and its simplicity~ Although this phone is now very obsolete and is even lower end then entry phones today, this phone leads my everyday life. I even compared to newer phones like Samsung Galaxy Mega 2, Oppo Neo 5, Lenovo S650, Lenovo A7-30 A3300-HV, etc. But, my phone, by far, is the most easiest to use (by my opinion and those phone owners)
Still in Froyo ver. avoiding Gingerbread upgrade because of ram usage i saw on Galaxy Young (1st gen)'s ram usage.
But, after its 3 years of leading my life, it starts to show its aging. Issues,
1. Home button needs to press harder (as hard as i can actually)
2. Short battery life
3. Proximity sensor not working
4. Broken pieces (USB cover lost, microSD cover breaks, scratches over the screen, back cover)
5. Twice incidents happen (the phone wont charge and wont detect. had to pull out the battery and charge with external universal charger and leaving the phone overnight)
6. Internal memory's getting full, even most of apps uninstalled
I dont planned to by a new phone for now. But i need phone in case my phone dies. Although i have a budget to actually buy 2 Asus Zenfone 4 (4" ver), I want to make use my phone till the end of its life.
In case, i need a new phone suits for me as well. I like my Galaxy Mini more than newer phones because of its simplicity and easy yet smart (for me)
I've been looking phones like Asus Zenfone 4, Oppo Neo 5, Samsung Galaxy Trend Plus, Galaxy S Advance (old, dual core), Galaxy SII, etc. I dont like phones bigger than 5" because is too big for my pocket. Since im a gamer, i would like a powerful phone as well (with OTG, i would rather connect to a controller than bigger screen). But since im in money issues, i cant buy too expensive phone.
Any phone models that you can recommend me? Requirements,
Dual core ARM cpu or Intel
At least 512MB ram
Adreno 302 and above, faster than Mali-400MP2 (was disappointed with MaliMP2, except if it is quad core like Mali-400MP4)
At least 4GB internal storage (i have 2gb and 8gb microSD, always swapping)
at least multitouch screen
Not more than 5" display
at least 5MP with [email protected] recording
Im interested with Asus Zenfone 4 but i dont really like ZenUI. since im using TouchWiz v3.0, i like the simplicity and of course, Task Manager! (long press Home key and task manager appear). like the ColorOS from OPPO Neo 5 but like TouchWiz more. If possible, i want to have a phone very similar to my Galaxy Mini
