Will it be possible to receive OTA updates while rooted on stock firmware only with custom kernel? Or will I need to unroot? If so would I need to go back to stock kernel also? Any help is appreciated

This chart applies to both receiving and applying OTA updates.

I think there is a difference between receiving updates and applying them. I have CWM recovery and a rooted, deodexed stock rom (does this count as stock or custom?), and stock kernel. I get the OTAs just fine, but they won't flash properly until I root the OTA and repackage it for CWM.
For the OP- if you have a custom kernel, how did you install it? I think you have a custom recovery as well.

as far as i know as long as there are modifications in the root or system folder it is considered "Custom" so being deodexed is technically custom

Hi. Some info about my Nexus 5:
ROM: stock
Kernel: stock
Bootloader: unlocked
Since when I have updated to 4.2.2 (flashing the update using CWM) my Nexus 5 overwrites any custom recovery with the stock one and it unroots during boot. This is very strange: it never happened before. CyanogenMod talks about this:

So what?
Flash CWM again and before you reboot it'll ask if you want to disable the stock recovery flash so you just say yes

Well I have flashed it many times but it never asked me that...
After the OTA it will as the OTA adds a file to replace a custom recovery with stock. I just said 'yes' to remove this feature and it kept CWM from then on

So shall I flash the 4.2.2 OTA again? Or is it just too later?

It didn't ask me. However I followed this guide to do that manually and it worked. Thank you for your help.
I just went into System update on my phone ( G900PVPU3BOK4 - latest firmware as of checking yesterday) and it's downloading a 891.75MB Software update. Any one know what this update is?
Also, I was trying to get some straight info on either downgrading it or using cf-autoroot to root this version ( G900PVPU3BOK4). However there's a lot of misinformation and outdated info on this. I've tried downgrading numerous times and it fails with ODIN. Seems that this version you can't downgrade, and as far as rooting no clear info, except that previous firmware (BOA6) can be rooted with this. Anyone have concrete info on either downgrading or rooting the BOK4 firmware on Sprint SM-G900P?
Thanks in advance.
The 900mb update is for Marshmallow (android 6.0.) There is another thread in this gs5 general forum that people are discussing this in. Cf auto root does work on the firmware you are running now, but if you root now you will lose the ability to accept OTA updates. For 6.0 you need to flash twrp via odin and use supersu systemless root.

Flash sunkernel or androplus
A .253 compatible version, then you'll get a recovery to boot, from there flash slimx or some custom ROM and then you can relax

T-mobile version! After the phone is rooted! Click update and download in the system, then insert an empty slot in magisk, restart, and check the system version number, which is still 11.2.2..2! The system update still prompts 11.2.3.3 update! Unable to update the system now! Flashing back to boot.img without a patch still cannot be updated

Your probably gonna have to do a complete uninstall of magisk. Reinstall original boot image then take update . Reflash patched boot image of update to regain root. Just my thoughts.
I had to completely re-lock my bootloader and factory reset to be able to take the update. Make sure your boot.img is stock before doing this though, as having a modified one will render the system unable to boot (you can still access the bootloader, though).
