[Q] Stuck in bootloop after 6 months of smooth sailing, can't access recovery - HTC Desire S

Hi everyone!
I've been searching and reading around trying to solve a bootloop problem on my HTC Desire S/Saga (or at least I think it is a bootloop problem) but, so far, I've had no luck.
Here's what has happened and what's going on:
1) S-off and got hboot 6.98.1002 through revolutionary
2) phone worked normally for six months and suddenly, without any changes or flashes, it rebooted and started a boot loop, ie, I can't get into any in-OS menus.
3) Choosing recovery of factory settings from hboot menu just reboots the phone and restarts the loop.
4) I've tried flashing (both through fastboot and android flasher) the eng hboot 0.98.0000 and clockworkmod recovery images but neither had any effect.
Phone was vodafone-locked, running a vanilla Android 2.3.4.
hboot menu data:
SAGA PVT SHIP S-OFF RL
HBOOT-6.98.1002
RADIO-3822.10.08.04_M
eMMC-boot
I don't have any backup data from pre-revolutionary, either :|
I'm knocking my head against the walls, hoping that the phone's only temporarily bricked... any ideas?
Thanks in advance for helping a n00b...

Doesn't sound like a hboot problem you me, but that could just be me. And I don't think flashing the stock hboot will help.
Are you sure you are flashing the ENG hboot? It's 0.98.2000. 0.98.0000 is most likely your stock hboot and can't be flashed over revolutionary hboot in most cases.
So to get back to stock stock..... You will need to run your RUU after the new hboot has been flashed.
Another option is for you to install a custom ROM and avoiding the RUU. I still suggest you flash the ENG hboot though.

Thanks everybody!
I've been away for the last few days so I haven't been able to test anything, but tomorrow evening I'll test both suggestions and post feedback.
Thanks again!

So, I've trying out your suggestions and...

So I tried to flash the ENG hboot from this thread, using android flasher and later using this method, but adb never lists my Saga.
Fastboot lists it correctly, though. I *think* I had USB debugging on, if I recall correctly.
Using androidflasher I get a flash ok notice and then the bootloop just restarts...
Any ideas?

Your problem sounds exactly like the one on the thread linked below.... in which case, if you just try the steps from the concerned thread, and are still unable to fix your device, it can be written off as another dead eMMC...
Just follow the instructions on this thread...maybe you will have better luck than the OP?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1507106

So did your hboot change or not? If hboot and recovery won't flash then I have to agree with above, fried emmc :-(

yeah it could be an emmc problem, you may want to check the sticky in the development forum, if this is the real problem there is a possibility for a fix, not necessarily emmc replacement

Thanks, tried everything and had the exact same results. Fried eMMC, I guess..
This is really wierd, I got a phonecall, turned the call off, the phone rebooted and entered the bootloop.
Nothing fishy or wierd, no flashing erros, just a regular phonecall from my boss. Damn :|
If only I could get the normal hboot on I could repair it under warranty
Well, thanks everybody

Try going for warranty repair, for a few guys over here at xda no one checked (or din not care) whether the phone was rooted or s-off when they went to service their phone. Maybe you'll get lucky too. Good luck!

[Q] Is my phone bricked by flashing Shipped ROM

#CASE SOLVED#
Hi,
I was using CWM7 and then i tried to flash my phone with shipped custom ROM that was listed on this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1002506&page=37
I chose this version "RUU_Saga_S_HTC_Europe_2.10.401.8_Radio_20.4801.30.0822U_3822.10.08.04_M_release_225161_signed"
I followed all the procedure and all the process was going right. However, when the phone start to rebooting, it stuck at HTC logo screen for almost half an hour.
I tried the (up) (down) (power) procedure and "adb reboot recovery" but none worked. So i pulled off the battery and try to restart it. However, it stopped again at HTC log screen.
I can still access my recovery, so is there anything that I can still try to do?

With the latest Sense 3.0 RUU, the ROM requires that the corresponding HBOOT 2.00.0002 get flashed too in order to boot properly. Since you have S-OFF via Revolutionary, the Revolutionary HBOOT 6.98.1002 is preventing the RUU from overwriting the it, therefore you have ended up with a ROM / HBOOT mismatch and that is why the ROM hangs at the HTC screen.
IMO you would be better off sticking with custom ROMs that have implemented Sense 3.0/3.5 and keeping S-OFF.
From this point you probably need to reinstall ClockworkMod recovery from FASTBOOT mode and then you can restore you nandroid backup (you did make a backup before you attempted this, right?) to get back to CM 7
I did make a backup. But right now, when I choose recovery I can only goes to the stocked recovery. My CWM recovery is lost after the flashing. And when I navigate through the stocked recovery, I can't find a way to restore my last ROM.

Yes I understand that CWM is no longer there. I said you need to reinstall it using Fastboot.

[Q] HTC Sensation won't boot past HTC screen

New to development... (hence the problems!!)
Followed online guide through HTCDEV to unlock HTC Sensation. Rooted phone and was trying out some custom ROMs which I managed with no major problems albeit I could not get the WiFi to connect (kept giving error message) i assumed this was a Custom ROM issue so changed to another.
I had made Nandroid back-up, which worked fine on the first restore attempt. unfortunately, now it just says MD5 mismatch so I cannot restore to my original working ROM.
Problem now is that I cannot get any of the ROMs I flash to boot past the White HTC screen. Advice on where to go from here much appreciated?
CWM reads:

Did you change the name of the nandroid backup?
If so,you must leave NO GAPS in it...
Check THIS THREAD
Thanks for the reply Malybru...
The thread lloks great and I'm sure now that as my phone has been unlocked through HTCDev and remains S-On that the Boot.img is the issue. Only snag is that now that I cannot get the phone to boot, I cannot connect it through USB to the computer to Flash the boot.image across. As I previously mentioned, I cannot get the Nandroid backup option working (I didn't change the name?) so I cannot seem to get out of my 'bricked' state!!
Any help greatly appreciated...

Hi,
Try to install 4EXT recovery from HERE
And when you have installed 4ext then remember to go to "tools" and enable "smartflash" every time you flash a rom. As it says in the guide.. Good luck..
NO joy i'm afraid - I cannot seem to get 4Ext onto the phone. It will happily open HBoot and CWM but no amount of trying allows me to get further

In your OP you get wifi errors because of kernel not being flashed as you are S-ON (HTCDEV unlock only unlocks certain partitions) and your booting issues seems to be coming from a boot.img/kernel related problem so my advice would be to S-OFF and use 4EXT recovery to flash another ROM and that should sort it (make sure to double check MD5 CheckSum of whatever ROM you are flashing!)

If I try to switch on phone it simply will not go past the initial white screen with the green HTC logo.
When I open in boatloader it goes through a cycle of checking SD card, loading image etc - at one point it states no image or wrong image and the parsing PG58IMG
Can I still S-Off and transfer 4Ext to the phone with this functionality and if so, could you please explain how. Obviously I can flash Zips from SD Card?

Hi,
Look HERE
Firstly, thankyou for your advice. However, unless I'm missing something (highly likely!!) it appears that to S-Off I will need to connect the phone through USB which does not recognise it?
Also the HTC Sensation opens for HBoot version does not include 1.27.0000 on the beta key generator?

as long as you are SON ..you cant flash firmware
now for ppl with htc-dev unlocked bootloader and S-ON ..the traditional way of flashing wont work
you need to do one extra step (if the step missed ..either the rom doesnt boot up or you will have wifi error)
there is a perfectly awesome guide on how to properly flash custom roms in your case
which malybru mentioned it in the second post itself of the same thread
which you are keep on ignoring and asking for more answers (which has been answered ages ago )
now read the thread ..understand it and flash the rom accordingly
I'm getting there slowly after the helpful nudge!! 4Ext flashed and smartflash enabled - trying to flash android rev HD as suggested but still not having much luck (still won't boot past HTC screen)
i did format the SD card previously following a previous troubleshooting thread (bad idea no doubt!!)
Could it be to do with the PG58img.zip- when bootloader opens it still says wrong image?

Have you still got PG58IMG.zip on your sd card?
If so, delete it.
Sorted!!!
Many Thanks to all who have posted on this thread. Successfully solved the issues and thankfully phone works as a phone on And Rev HD. I just need to rectify the WIFI error when I get a chance. Any hints to an easy guide would be much appreciated. Also, any advice on the best custom ROM to use; I appreciate theres an element of personal choice but i'm after one which will allow me to maxmise the potential of the device in terms of speed without ruining battery life too much?
Thanks

Hi,
If you manage to sort a problem, could you please share what you did,so that others may benefit.
Solution
WiFi now working. I followed the guide suggested for me by Malybru at the start of this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1631861 I flashed 4Ext recovery instead of CWM. Then Android Rev Supawipe followed by Android Rev HD ROM. All exactly as advertised on the guide by using ADB. Initially WiFi wasn't working but I then flashed CM9 along with separately flashing the boot.img, again using ADB. All works perfectly now. Just follow the guide exactly and you should be fine. The main problem I had was assuming that because the phone did nothing when you connected the USB cable that connecting ADB wouldn't work. Don't think - just follow the guide!! Many Thanks All

Help - stuck, hopefully didn't brick my phone

Hi all,
I hope one of you masterminds is able to help me out.
I tried to root my sensation without s-off with hecdev.com (using One_X_All-In-One_Kit_v1.0) and then tried to install cm9 from one the links here via revcovery with CWM 5.8.0.9.
But then I was stuck with the loading animation...
I cannot run Android now, so I cannot flash a stock RUU.
I can enter bootloader, which seems to be unlocked, here's the info:
"Unlocked"
PYRAMID PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-1.27.0000
eMMC-boot
Jan 13 2012,17:33:34
I was on the latest official ROM (ICS, via OTA) before trying that.
I have not succeeded in flashing a ROM anymore.
Do I need to get S-Off first?
Or is HBOOT to new? Do I have to revert? How?
I tried older HBOOT, but it wouldn'T do anything after PArsing
Please help, any hint is appreciated =/
PS: I would be more than happy to have a stock rom again...as mentioned, cannot use a ruu.exe file, as it seems fastboot usb ist not recognizable by ruu.exe
Edit: After the 4th or 5th try, RUU recognized the phone when in fastboot usb mode, but update fdailed, cwm saif "security fail" ... sigh, seems I really blew it this time

Hi,
Start again using THIS GUIDE
Flash the boot.img from your ROM through fastboot.
Extra step 1 from this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25587345
Be sure to use the boot.img from your ROM.
Then make a clean install of the ROM again.
Also, read that thread for the sake of understanding what you're doing.
There is NO need yet to flash an RUU.
Latest OTA comes with hboot 1.29 which is locked.
You might not be in the latest one, perhaps start with an RUU with.the latest fw (3.33).

but when rebooting the white screen with the green htc logo appears right away and nothing more happens...any idea? I may have messed up the kernel before, but when asked by ext4 recovery whether to flash a kernel, tried both custom and stock, none changed the problem with booting up

How to FORMAT ALL partition?

Hi all,
My sensation has been shutting down for no reason for a long time now. No matter what ROM, what kernel, even I have changed the battery twice. It just sometimes turns off, and when I reboot (if it does) it either has very low battery or it will keep shutting down until I plug it in.
To me, it seems like there is something misleading the power level or something. I have super wiped the phone, even reformatted my SD, changed recovery and did the same, flashed thousands of roms (4.1 and 4.2)... and it still does the same.
Funny enough, it doesnt happen when I am in recovery mode (for example, after it shuts down, I reboot into recovery, spend some time there, then reboot and as soon as it boots, bam it shuts down).
This makes me think there is something in a partition that is not touched by the wiping scripts that is bugged and therefore is not fixed after flashing roms etc.
I recently manually wiped and formatted all of my Asus Transformer's partitions (even the recovery) using my PC and it works great, that fixed a problem that also was carried on from ROM to ROM. Hopefully there is a way to do the same for my sensation to give it a 100% clean start.
Thank you very much in advance!

Hi,
The recovery 4EXT has a "Format all partitions except sd card" option.
Look HERE for an installation guide.
Alternatively, you could run a RUU ,which will return all your partitions to stock.
Look HERE
Have you tried the trick of jamming some card to improve the contact of your battery?
It may just be loose, and the card keeps it firmly in place.

Hi, thank you for your reply.
I used to have 4ext and I have used many times the format all option. I recently switched to TWRP recovery to try their formatting options too. Neither solved the problem.
Also, I have two anker batteries, I have made sure they are not loose. Nevertheless, this happens even when the phone resting on the table, so I am sure that is not the issue. I have switched them wth my gf's sensation, and hers works fine and mine doesn't.
I will try the RUU option to see if going back to stock will remove any kind of bricking that may have occured after so many flashes..
do you think there is anything that is not touched by rom flashing, recovery changing, and partition formatting that may be the cause of the problem? I also updated the firmware too 3.32 I believe it was (the latest) for JB 4.2.2... I dont know what else I can flash or change or format to try to eliminate this powering-off issue...
thanks a lot once more

Yes, back in the day I used revolutionary, got supercid, and recently I updated the firmware to 3.33 (hboot 1.27.1100), and I am S-OFF.

Might this be caused by the radio? it's the only thing I havent changed recently.
Also, being supercid, and S-OFF, do I have to lock the bootloader and S-ON? I quickly looked at the RUU thread and that is what I understood...
thanks man!

Yes, back in the day I used revolutionary, got supercid, and recently I updated the firmware to 3.33 (hboot 1.27.1100), and I am S-OFF.

Hi,
Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DO NOT GO TO HTCDEV if you are s-off.
The reason I asked is because you can flash any RUU being s-off and super cid.
Just choose a 3.33 European RUU to run.
EDIT:
Look HERE
Just use the guide to show you how to run it.

thanks man, I will run the RUU. I believe I have already done this in the past, but my memory is terrible xDD
3.2 Using RUU to restore partitions
Find your right RUU using 2 in this guide.
Flash your RUU as you normally would by double clicking the executable & following the instructions, you phone must be connected to PC via fastboot USB (in the bootloader).
If you get a Hboot Pre-update message, re-run the RUU once again with your phone connected in fastboot USB.
If the previous step fails, follow points listed under 4. Flashing RUU manually.
Reboot your device to bootloader, your bootloader should now say *Locked* or *Relocked*

From the tutorial on RUU in the link you provided, the last point on bootloader being locked or relocked... will I need to do revolutionary again or the other method to unlock it again? Will this be drawback flashing a new ROM?
thanks!

Hi,
Bootloader will not be affected because you are s-off.
You will not lose s=off either.
YOU WILL LOSE EVERYTHING else.
So,backup first.
You will end up with stock recovery,ROM and kernel.
You will need to re-install a custom recovery, before you install a new ROM.
See how it all works before you do anything.

well, the RUU went fine, but now I have a locked bootloader, and can't flash a recovery via fastboot. (still S-OFF).

HBoot 1.27.1100 Patch (Go from Hboot 1.29.0000 to 1.27.1100)
Should unlock your phone again.
Run the phone for a while.
Does it still reboot?

sweet, that did the trick
I flashed a dark splash screen and the cwm recovery. All went well and I could flash my 4.2.2 rom. I will restore my titanium backup apps and hope for the best. Cant tell now if the sudden turning off still happens because my phone has been plugged in all the time while I was doing this.
I will report probably tomorrow once the battery is bit used.
Sir, I must say, you are a legend. Thank you very very much for your help!!! your rock!:good:

Hi,

[Q] Desperate - Need Help

Two years ago I had this phone and I wanted to flash. I did. I don't remember all the details of it, but I do know that someone on here helped me flash it and it ended up with a European(?) flash on it and I remember he helped me do something with the radio in order that it would take the flash. I also remember that the reason for the flash was so that TMO wouldn't charge me for tethering. In any case, here's the current situation. I sold the phone and the person came and said they were having issues... so I was trying to restore it to a TMOUS ROM. Eventually, I bricked it, and got the qualcom download mode issue. I found the thread on that on how to fix it, and I did. Now the phone boots to the recovery screen and does nothing else. I am unable to flash ANY of TMO's RUU's, some of the PG58IMG.zip files that I've been able to find all fail... very frustrating.
I followed another thread that talked about how to unlock the bootloader, which involved copying the Identifier Token and sending it in to HTC. I received the response, and ran the command and was successful in unlocking it. When the device rebooted, it even showed the Tmobile animated logo. When I go back into the boot loader, it now reads:
My bootloader screen reads as follows:
*** UNLOCKED ***
PYRAMID PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT - 1.27.0000
eMMC-boot
JAN 13 2012.17:33:34
Software info shows:
Android Version: 4.0.3
HTC Sense Version: 3.6
Software number: Blitz_2.0.0
Kernel: 3.0.16-gda3fdfc
[email protected]#1
Baseband version: 11.76A3504300U_11.24A.3504.31_M
Build Number 3.33.401.106 CL391535 release-keys
Browser version: WebKit/534.30
At this point, I would try any flash, any rom, any thing to get this phone working for the guy again. I am skittish about flashing anything from this point so I don't mess up and have to start all over somewhere. Can I flash something working from this point? Can I flash a TMO RUU from here?
I have the RUU_Pyramid_TMOUS_1.27.531.2_RADIO_10.42.9007.00P_10.11.9007.15_M_release_192098_signed.exe as well as several others. Id' rather put this phone onto something stock from tmo but will do a custom as long as the phone is restored to working order.
I won't say I'm a newb... but having been away from flashing for a while, I could really use some step by steps to get going again.
The computer I am using to flash with is a Windows XP machine with all the HTC drivers working etc.
**** UPDATE ****
The phone now boots up as it did when this all started. After I did the token thing and got the bin file from HTC, I applied it and the result was the boot loader info above. It got past the tmobile animated logo and actually into the phone starting up as new including applying all the settings I want. Awesome that the phone now functions like a phone again, but I would still like to flash an official TMO Rom to it to restore it back to like out of the box condition. Any help is appreciated.

I actually have read that... like 6 times to make sure I'm not missing anything. I do remember having to flash the radio back when I did my original flashing, and I think that process is preventing me from using any of the RUU's that I find. Are there any posts/files/resources that will help me flash the radio back to its default, so that I can then flash the RUU?
Also, I am S-ON already, but ANY RUU that I try to flash fails. Do I need to go to S-OFF and then RUU, then back to S-ON?

CID is 11111111
I think I have it licked now.
Used the universal firmware and the viper 5.2.1 flash and it loaded just fine. Never got S-OFF on it, but the viper flash so far is working excellent.

how do you have supercid with S-ON?
also how did you flashed the universal firmware while on S-ON?
those two things can be done only on S-OFF

Wish I could tell you.... hence the reason for the original help request.
I can tell you that I hit softbrick on it once and had to unbrick in linux.
Then I got the LOCKED with Security Warning. Then I got the unlock bin file from HTC Dev, used that and got back to UNLOCKED, with no security warning. Then I tried Rumunner without any success at all, stayed S-ON.
in any case, after trying just about everything I could think of, I found the viper post, saw that you said you don't need S-OFF to flash new rom... so i gave it a shot. Updated EXT, flashed the firmware, then the rom and it all went very smoothly. Phone's been working fine since. <shrug>
