[Q] programming an app like 'spotify' - General Questions and Answers

Hi there!
I am doing a project at my university where I'm supposed to come up with a bussines plan. The idea me and some friends have come up with is something simmillar to spotify, but for audiobooks.
For this part we need a rough estimate of how much all things would cost. SoI have two questions:
How long would programming an app like this? Roughly how much would such an app cost me to buy?
Note that I'm not acctually looking to buy an app like this, I'm simply looking for some info about what it might cost!
If anyone has some idea, or advice where I can find information, about the cost for the servers etc that would be appreciated, too!
Thanks in advance!

Very tough question. Doing the actual app may take a couple of months for an experienced developer. But then the back-end (server) would also need a lot of work. Will you engineer your own streaming protocol (like spotify) etc etc. So, let's say about 12 months in total for 1 engineer (app + server). Very rough estimate of course. If you manage to get a developer for $100 per hour the cost would something like 1800 hours * $100 = $180000.

Thanks for the input. The thing is all hypothetical. The assignment is to create a plan for a business idea.
I'll just start spitting questions since someone has been kind enough to answer my first I'm really a chemical engineer and can barely call my self a hobby programmer, but hey.. let's go all hypothetical!
Is there any reliable alternative to engineering your own streaming protocol?
Sent from my HTC Incredible S using XDA Premium App

I guess the alternative for you is to skip the streaming part and rely just on download / offline capabilities. That would make the server engineering a lot easier!

A discussion on Mobile Commerce, Please give your thoughts and opinions!

Hello everyone.
I am working on a business thesis about mobile commerce (m-commerce) and I am trying to get the thoughts & opinions of consumers. It would be very helpful to my studies if some of you would volunteer to discuss and answer a few of the questions listed below. Feel free to comment on others’ thoughts. Do not worry if your opinions are or are not the same as others. All opinions matter.
A very basic definition of mobile commerce is the purchase of goods or services with a mobile device. However, our discussion is focused on mobile phones.
Some examples of m-commerce include downloading software & ringtones, paying for bus/movie tickets, accessing banking information, and etc. on your phone.
Please discuss any of the questions below that you would like.
* Do you use your phone for making any financial transactions or purchases? If yes, what type? If no, why not?
* Have you had any experiences with using mobile phones for purchases? If yes, please explain. If no, why not?
* What mobile phone services do you find yourself using the most and which ones do you find the most useful? Why?
* Does price effect your decision to use mobile phone services? If yes, please explain.
* What might motivate you to use mobile commerce?
* Do you have a need for on-the-go internet connectivity? If yes, how do you achieve this goal? Please mention the types of devices and/or services you use for this.
All comments are appreciated! Thank you
EDIT: Sorry, If this thread is in the wrong section please move.
Bump.
Maybe I'm asking for too much? Even answering one question would be a great help!
Thanks in advance
I'll bite...
I've never had the guts to make a purchase over my phone. I guess I don't have a reason to have confidence that my information will be secure. I prefer my home PC.
I do check my bank account balance via text every once in awhile. My bank offers the service and has guaranteed it.
I don't have a "need" for a data plan, I live with Wifi only - which is available everywhere I go mostly. I don't feel I "need" a cell phone at all, let alone a PPC. I like my Raphael. I like it a lot, but it is definately not a need.
I use the calendar and contacts to death (sync'ed). I use the phone and text. I use my PPC as a floppy to transfer files. I use wifi to get weather and read the news or watch a movie in bed. I much prefer my PC to browse porn or play games. Oh yeah, trying to do any productive work on my PPC can be done, but is terribly slow. It's good as an option if it's the only thing available.
To answer what might motivate me to use mobile commerce - I'd need confidence in security, I'd need zero headaches from hardware or software completing a transaction, and I'd need the product to be cheaper than if I waited to to get home to do it on my PC (or some form of incentive.)
I'm a cheap bastard though.
Well that's my honest opinions, hope u get something out of it. GL on your essay, dude!
Thank you very much for your input eudaemonic.
Anyone else care to comment?..don't be shy
*bump*
Hoping for just a few more comments.

[Q] I have a fabulous idea for an app- anyone want to help?

Hi I have an app idea that will be (if implemented) profitable methinks- similar apps are available - it is for specialist field and is of an interactive map/ navigation type- the idea is very obvious and probbaly quite simple to implement with the feature design phase all done and explainable in a brief synopsis- i am clueless as to how to implement it though
?
would anyone like to help build it and share the credit?
i have no money to pay anytoine just an idea that will definitely pay off to some extent- whoever does this first has a captive market so to speak!
I spoke with my brother who is in the industry as a maarketing project manager- not a developer and he agrees that it is well worth doing.
the features the app would require are-
interactive map with user editable gps data additions, tagging in real time, possible photographs.
updates made by various professional bodies with information feeds on around 600
+fixed locations and areas, route planning facility directly affected by data from these feeds, these are the main features of the app but the capacity for expansion is seemingly endless- preferably a uk south east based developer.
this app also has the potential to save lives /prevent accidents as the data is of real world importnace and is already accessed by many as an essential reference- possible licensing by and definitely appreciated by the professional and govt bodies with respoinsibilities inhe speciliaist field.
anyone? i bet one of you guys could build ths in your sleep!
i would not know where to start however, there is a siumliar app out there it does not do the same thing as my idea but it would provide a template for the concept- trust me this idea is dynamite and my industry source- ie my brother tells me it is instantly saleable to the relevant bodies fort aa fee of around 50k!
but is worthless to me without the relevant skillset in an individul i can trust, cmon! whats to lose?>
ok anyone want to teach me how to do this on my lonesome?
i usually spend all day chopping trees down which is why im asking for help , not sure if i haave the time for leaarning computer progrmming but...
Perhaps you should be a little more specific as to what the app will be good for. I know you probably don't want to tell this everyone, but you'll have to eventually anyway.
are you lot on this forum an honest bunch? thats the question...
i m very aware that an intellectual community such as yours is by its nature ius n open nd honest one but bill gates and steve jobs are still bastards who got rich of your back!
the complexity of the app or the potential for its future complexity and added feature sets is one of the apps strong points as is its ingenuity in its area of application!
It would mean the safety apsect of the thing could be provided for free which kinda is the whole intellectual property business side of things hence my hesitation in being candid..i dont want to be charged in the future for an idea i had myself to save lives!
I was reckless in sharing an invention in the past- 12 months later my mate ws on dragons den flogging my idea!
it wasnt groundbreaking but he nicked it and never sent me a cheque out of the 150 grand one of them ponied up!!
but... the basic idea is very similar to chris boardmans pothole reporting app for cyclists- generating repair requests to uk councils- my bro happened to have worked on this very app and he said the development tools are readily avilable to create mine own whgich might bvew easiuer if tha button hADNT FALLEn off my old comp and i actually owned smartphone.
hence my request-
i can see the app in my head and can describe evry function of it very well but are you the man to describe it to?

Building a better ISP for us all

This has to do with anything that uses data I have a plan but need others as well to help me develop! I want the internet back and I'm sure all the devs and users do too so heres my idea in general:
Has anyone seen all the talk about limits on the internet lately in the US here? Time warner wants to limit customers to 5gb and have 1$ for each gb you use over that. Thats just ridiculous and I see all the other companies jumping on this ship as well as another way to milk the consumers for using content on the internet.
I am plotting out a way to build out a high speed, affordable, symmetrical speed network(meaning for instance, you pay for 6mbps you get 6mbps both ways) That wont have crazy stupid limits like all these other guys are imposing so that people can express their creativity or whatever they want.
To me putting limits on broadband puts limits on creativity and productivity because you cant make what you want without worrying about some really non-existent limit.
Don't these companies already have enough money?
Anyways, enough of my rant there! Ive figured out a way to develop a wireless network that will have insane speeds that will eliminate expensive fiber and repair itself if something breaks such as a node. I will soon be looking for anyone with programming skills or network skills that wants to work with me on what may be your next HSI provider.
My main goals are to provide:
A minimum of 6mbps for each household, symmetrical speeds so that you can download something as fast as you can send it(will promote lots of creativity)
Low latency, I know, hard to accomplish right? Wrong! I have a way!
Cheap to implement and upgrade. I want each node to be under 1500 and I have found this to be completely possible with the way I designed them, they are redundant as well and have internal battery backups, and also consume minimal power.
Ipv6 all the way! I want everyone to have a unique address, and Ipv6 allows for that, so the network will be purely ipv6 with ipv4 support if you want it.
Gigabit/Wireless N standard in all homes for the lowest latency possible! No cheap cable modems/Dsl modems!
Network that reroutes all traffic in case of a failure, I have found that this is possible and I'm currently testing a few ways to do this and so far have been successful.
Affordable, pass the savings along to the customers.
The tech is there guys! I have figured out how to apply it to this purpose. The new generation of internet is coming!
Im trying to decide what encryption to use, I want it to have the least amount of overhead while still remaining secure. I take privacy seriously.
What do you guys think? I'm really going for it to better the internet for us all! I don't want or need limits! I know you guys don't either.
Hopefully you are a billionaire! Lol

Doesn't seem very realistic but if it's true then I do wish you the very best of luck. Mind you my limit is 150gb here in the UK.
0/10 for scamming attempt. How old are you? Hows Nigeria this time of year?

Yeah you can help by sending him money. Also send extra and you can invest in my perpetual motion machine. Just think of all the free energy we can gain to power this magical internet. Just send all the money ahem I mean work to me and ill make sure he gets his fair share. on a side note do you also respond to those adds on the poles that offer to help you earn $1500-3000 per week for home? 'Cause if you are feel free ask me about that.
Yeah, I'm not really buying this. You can't just make a company that provides things to a broad spectrum of people. You don't have any plans. Well, besides the wasting of everyone's time and money plan, which is ignominious, to say the least.
hm. I'd like to invest in your new fangled perpetual motion machine..
I'm guessing Einstein helped you develop it in area 51 with Elvis?
anything would be better than comcast. I'll stay tuned

Limits? Wait..that might allow creative postings from those with limited knowledge of networking terms etc... Er...wait...never mind
Ok treat this like American Idol.. You gave an ok performance dawg..a little pitchy but just ok..seriously, use some of the new terminology you just learned by studying in class, take some intro classes like NET+, iF you still have interest in the networking world, dont spend a lot of time on certification, time on planet is key, job experience but grow and learn architecture basics of networking, routing concepts, security fundimentals and how it all relates.. Trust me on the experience piece and if you still like networking etc, you are officially insane
Then come back and build us a better internet

I've seen discussion aroun this for about a year now. Still no action taken twords it though.
I feel like a jerk for this, but I've had a perpetual motion machine for a couple months now, and I haven't created a thread for it. Sorry.

[Q] How much money to make an application on Android?

I'm obviously new here but have been following multiple threads for a good while. I am thinking of making an app on android just for the experience. My past history was a web-mastering class that used html and various programs such as dream weaver and photoshop.
I'm thinking of getting a few books that explain how to code and create apps. If anyone has good resources they would like to suggest, it would be much appreciated. Or perhaps I need to take a couple classes at my university before coding?
My main question is, How much does it cost to create an app yourself. I've looked it up and I see people saying numbers like 5 to 10 thousand!? That sounds ridiculous. How much is it if I make it completely myself. No hired help? Is that possible?
It is possible, but difficult. And your app will end up buggy and poor quality most likely. Your biggest problem would be support for the app especially if it's a social one.
Build something that works straight out the box

I'm thinking something along the lines of gaming. Or maybe just start with a simple app that feeds info from a site I create. Right now I just want to get the gist of it. With enough practice, would it still be poor quality by making it myself? and How much would this cost? Just the money to buy the programs I'm guessing?
I am an active android developer. I have 4 apps in the market, all of them free. I have just 1 app with advertisement, I wait to get more install for my other 3 apps.
I make $10-20 daily from my 1 app that has ads (Monthly around $300-400).
How long did it take to make a single app ? Just 2 days
How much did it cost ? $0
For programs you need Eclipse + Android SDK, which costs $0 , both open source.
Poor quality ? No way, you are not going to write 10s of thousands codes here ? Scope is small, it will be less buggy.
Its all about an app that attracts user, you dont have to build new angry birds.
Thanks for the info moribitotech. btw, nice website. I'll give your apps a visit too
Let me know how it goes,I could even test it for you.
Good luck.

My son is making his first app right now. Only spent about $30 for 2 books (android /Java) and Google is free so very low startup cost

[Q] I'm looking for a generic app for car salesmen

A friend of mine is a car salesman and is looking for an app that he can use to quickly access information about cars on his lot while talking to customers. He asked me if I could "throw something together".
I recently started doing android development, and I've gotten about as far as doing the Hello World and a couple of other tutorials, and this sounds a little beyond me. But it seems to me that there must be something like that already - only when I google terms like "cars sales app" and so forth, I get a lot of free apps that were built for specific dealerships, for selling to their customers. Not so helpful.
What I have in mind is just a simple catalog of the current inventory - a big picture of the car, a screen full of details the customer would be interested in, a screen full of technical information for mechanics and salesmen.
If something open source exists, that's similar to this, which I could modify as needed, that would be ideal. If the exact thing I'm describing exists, that would also be awesome. If nothing remotely similar exists, then I hope one of you can make a million dollars building it, because it'll probably be a few months before I'm at that level myself.
Any ideas?
Why not just create a spreadsheet with all the details in and use one of the many document viewers to access it?
Or build a very basic internal website he can browse from his phone?
Anything else seems to be overkill to me.
Maybe he could just use an already-existing database app ? Sounds close to what he wants and they already exist. You know, if he wants to spend as little money as possible.
A web-site could also do the trick, do they not already have one ? Do they already have inventory on-line or not ? Where is the database for their inventory even housed and how is it updated ?
It seems like overkill to me to have and have to maintain two databases. Is that what they actually want to do ? Are they okay with that extra work ? Who is going to be updating it ?
Do they really want an app that can use data from an existing website or database et cetera ?
Honestly, it sounds like he's asking you to "throw together" something that would cost him (possibly tens of) thousands of dollars to have personally developed otherwise. Why doesn't he just go for a service that already exists ? Like this (no idea if it's any good, just Googled). In that situation they've already developed the app and interface and just need to plug you in - so most likely less expensive than developing something totally custom.
I think this is probably out of your reach unless this guy really wants to maintain two databases just so he can have one on his phone - that's him or another employee constantly updating this thing with all that information you're thinking of putting in for each car. Do they have the time, desire, or manpower to do that ? How did you, when you wrote the OP, envision this "app" being updated to keep inventory current ? Would YOU be the one doing that ?
I know you're new and don't value your skills highly (and at this point for legitimate reasons - you don't have the skill to do anything you want right now and that's okay) - but I'm just going to put in my two cents and say that I think you're getting used. Cool if he just wants you to set up a frame work and is cool with maintaining it himself - that's awesome - but I'd think an existent database app would work just fine if that's the case.
