I'm switching over from an HTC Pure (win mob 6.5). I've been watching Android and am dying to get going with it. But before making the plunge, I'm curious on the phone.
1) If HTC does not provide Android 2.4 upgrades or beyond, will the custom ROMs offering 2.4 allow the Google Marketplace to work? I ask this because the HTC Pure Android ROM doesn't offer Marketplace because of incompatibilities with a non-Android phone.
2) Will Skype work on it? I've been holding out for an HTC with a front-facing camera to do video Skype like iPhone offeres. But, that doesn't seem to ever be an option for HTC users... always a back-side camera only deal.
3) I know the Netflix isn't available for Android yet. But, does anyone have input on this CPU being on the supported list for the Netflix app that does come out?
Belongs in general. Wrong place my friend

lrs421 is correct, moved to general as not android development
Agreed, I apologize and I thought I was on the general thread. Guess I posted on the wrong Firefox tab. Thanks for moving it to the right forum.
First of all the pure sucked so this is godsend compared to the pure. Just get and see for yourself.

I agree that the Pure is crap. But, what about the proposed questions above? I'm wanting to go in knowing what I'll be capable...

Sure um well lets see...
1. Absolutely however 2.4 is a ways off and 2.3 has yet to be officially released for inspire (summer i think). In other words don't worry about it unless you intend on rooting and flashing but as far as I know most if not all roms support marketplace.
2. Skype app should work but you kind of answered your own question. Why would you attempt to video conference on a phone without a front facing camera? I had iphone 4 and hardly used facial time, it was more like "cool i can see you" and um you look exactly the same as I saw you last.
3. Yes as far as I know all snapdragon processors should be supported.
Like I said before this phone is worlds better than the pure (I had one). If you just want a phone for pure (no pun intended) functionality then get an iphone 4. But if you want a phone you can hack and customize, with tons of potential and great specs then definitely get the inspire. I hope that helps
all custom ROMs still support the marketplace with no issues. so you have nothing to worry about.
Loving this purchase! Only have one problem with the thing...

The AT&T SG2 had CM7 and MiUi roms basically on launch day I've notice roms seem to be coming slow on the skyrocket.
Is this because of the different chipsets, Dev Interest, or something else compared to SG2?
(This isn't me complaining I'm just curious , I also noticed no CM7 roms for T-Mobile SG2)

This device is very new. Also There is no international version. Imsure the dev support will increase but gota have patience . Its a totally different device from the sgs2. Just hope more odevs becpme intrested in it. I think once ics is released for.it the dev support will increase. Supposed to be the first at&t device to recieve it

unfortunately, this is the same problem the infuse ran into.... which is why i left...
The SGS2 had it on the international phone, so migrating it was easy. New chip will delay the ROM's on the skyrocket, so be patient

The galaxy s2 lte is the international version of the skyrocket, but the issue is it released at around the same time and is not near as popular as the original gs2.
Our phones are very similar to the tmo GS2, so once they get a cm7 port the skyrocket version shouldn't be far behind.
You should not stick with this phone if you are hoping for a ton of dev support. Frankly, we're lucky to have what we have right now (thanks guys!). This is a one off phone and as such, it's more difficult to port stuff over to it. I consider it highly unlikely that we'll see any Cyanogen or MiUi love on this phone unless portability some how gets easier with ICS.
I'm not huge on installing ROM's just to play with them. I come here more for problem solving on stock + root configs, so this isn't a big deal for me. But I can understand why it's a big turn off to some people.
The ROMS for the Infuse came fairly quickly after the phone was available. Subsequent cooked ROMs then started becoming more stable just about 3-4 months after. Of course, it all depends on the availability of dev support for the SR and hopefully they are coming onboard soon enough.
Then again, if you want *more* than a few ROMs to choose from, then the 'regular' sgs2 may be more up your alley.
I NEED MY STOCK ANDROID BACK... touch wiz is pretty but i went from g1 to n1 to skyrocket and i miss some things
A second line is coming up for upgrade (for the wife) and I have thought about getting/trying out the skyrocket as I have the original att SGS2 and love the rom and dev support. Already testing out the international versions alpha build of ice cream sandwich. But for the wife's phone I don't think I want to mess with it as much though. But it DOES boil down to dev support and roms I guess. Is it really this slow in here? I love my OG SGS2 and even though we will have lte in my area by years end I wont be giving up mine for anything. I got my OG SGS2 two days after launch and at first was excited by the lte version until it was confirmed to have the snapdragon and not the exerynos. So I was glad I stayed.
So my question is has any well known devs jumped into the skyrocket arena yet? The dev section looks kind of lonely right now. I have a month to decide whether to get her a OG SGS2 or the skyrocket so I am in no rush. I saw all the threads and have followed the skyrocket until it was moved out of our sub forum, so I have read all the debates and arguing about the differences between the OG and skyrocket. Haven't been in here for a few weeks now and it looks almost the exact same developer section wise. Other than being rooted have you guys seen any spectacular advancements as we have seen in the OG SGS2? I am NOT in here trolling but just wanted to get all your inputs as well. Are you still glad you went with the skyrocket? Are you glad you didn't just take it back and get a OG SGS2? I know with lte you guys get kick ass download speeds, and in my OG I get 8Mb download and haven't had any issues streaming anything, downloading anything, or visiting any web pages. So is it worth it in your eyes for me to get the skyrocket for the wife? PLEASE only real answers, I am not here for flaming wars or "my device is better because" replies, I am not trying to stir up the emotions I have seen between the two in the past. So again please just your honest and as possible unbiased opinions. Thanks
PS.I posted this here because I run CM7 on my OG SGS2. Not sure if I could give it up though touchwiz on our (both) att SGS's gets the job done. Plus with testing out alpha builds of ICS we are in for a WHOLE change of goodness as long as the ASOP build looks and feels. Unless samsung or att don't ruin it that is.

I would certainly love to see CM7 support for this device. i think it would be tremendous oversight for it to get swept under the table and miss out on CM7.1 + CM9.
I do not see it happening .. i believe it will show up sooner or later.
Patiently holding out on purchasing "ics device." just to "have an ics ROM."
people the phone came out a month ago! i was on the SGSII forum, and we didn't have CM support immediately, it took time patience and DONTATIONS! if no one is donating, please quit crying!! You can always return the device. It is not a good look for those of in the community (irc.irondust.net; #skyrocket) that are either attempting to be a part of the solution. Da_G is looking into a port now. Furthermore, Samsung was sent an email re the release of the source code.
We will see.

We have to DEMONSTRATE DEMAND. Nothing in life is given, or assumed. At least not in the business world folks!
Instead of a HUGE thread on how to run a TMO ROM on our devices, we could request support instead on the Cyanogenmod thread for OUR device? Just a thought... not a flame
Any Dev will tell you the facts.. if he knows this device, he knows there are more than enough similarities BTW sgh-i727 and tmo sgs II for cyanogenmod to run a simple port. You guys must've not read up much .. this would be cake for those fellas.

The Skyrocket will be worth it in the long run, I know we might not have much dev support at the moment but eventually when ICS comes to this phone officially it will grow. I'm running this phone stock at the moment and I LOVE it no lag at all, and mostly I'm loving my 55mbps download speeds down here in Texas (;
Soon hopefully soon i miss me some miui!!

I had posted this attached to a thread in the main Q&A but was suggested I post here. Rather then start a new thread thought I'd piggy back here. Thanks for any thoughts you have.
I will probably order the Ainol NOVO Aurora today or tomorrow and have spent a bunch of time finding customer experiences with the half dozen or more vendors and haven't found a consensus.
I wish there was a U.S. vendor that shipped from the U.S. I'd be willing to pay a small premium, but alas, it doesn't look like I have that option.
I've narrowed down the vendors to either Merimobiles or UPlayTablet. Before I flip the coin, I'll post here, a place where I've become very pleased with the quality posts and knowledge of the people posting.
Any final words of wisdom before I take the plunge?
It's okay.
Hope you didn't take the plunge just yet.
I received my Aurora 2 days ago and I have rooted it and put a custom rom on it.
rooting process and all was was fairly easy once I found the right stuff.
There's also a community out there that's of fair size, but it's not that amazing even for the price, the screen is okay and it feels pretty good to hold. But over all it's just too laggy in day to day things, typing for instance
With the nexus 7 coming out in the next little while you'd be much better off waiting for that.
Videos do play very well though, including 1080p mkv's, which makes me a little surprised at laggy everywhere else.
Also touch screen is a little unsensitive.
Just my thoughts.

Thanks but I already took the plunge. Hopefully it will arrive next week. I've spent the time since I ordered reviewing the slatedroid forum. I don't have any confidence yet to install a different rom. I developed that confidence on my KF from reading this forum in about a day.
For now I'll be sticking with the stock rom.
Where did you get yours?
I've had one for about a week (v3, lg screen). For the price it is very good value for money, but definitely not perfect. It does lag, terribly when using the keyboard. I bought it for watching video, internet browsing, reading ebooks and fire occasional gaming. Despite the lag issues it's a great tablet.
Edit:
I've now overclocked mine using setcpu. My settings are stable at 1152 max, 600 min, performance governor. It has made a huge difference to the lag and I highly recommend this. I've also used titanium backup to freeze some of the bloatware. As I do not use this with a 3g dongle I will shortly remove the phone apk's (Phone, TelephonyProvider and Wappushmanager) to remove the mobile standby wakelocks as mentioned in post 109 here.

Ive had mine for 2 weeks, and having owned 6 tablets so far, everything from the Augen7 to the Nook Color (3 of those in the house now)
Until I got this the NC was the tablet I always recomended in the under $200 category.
Well having used it daily for 2 weeks and not updated anything (yet) this is now my #1 recommendation.
As for 'local' retailers, if you dont mind the "premium" MP4Nation is delivered through Amazon. For me that gave me a good sense of security since as a prime member I was able to have it ovenighted to me for $5
Im color blind but can see a difference in the screen. everyone at work who ses it starts telling ME I must have droppped IPAD $ on it.
I work in IT so most tabs are IPADS, at the moment. Ive had 3 folks order these since.
Ill slide over to slate and see whats up with new roms, but honestly stock really works well, for my needss anyway

Hey... I haven't installed any ROM on my Aurora yet. And I'm a beginner at this stuff.
My tab details are:
Android version - 4.0.3
Baseband version - 0.9
Kernel version - 3.0.8
Build number - 20120228.142352
Can you please tell me which of one these two chinese ROMs (mentioned above) will work great for me?

Yea the transformer tablets have a lot of support. The easiest thing to do would be look up various tablets and then search there respective forums to see how much development they have

I have a Xoom, but I think The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.2 (Newest one incase the number is wrong) would be good, since it is new, people will be developing.
I'm in the market for an android tablet as well but I see most of the tablet forums are dead or have 1 or 2 roms with action. Is there one in particular that stands out from the rest when it comes to development, roms, mods, and overall features?
My vote is for the Nexus 10. Some great roms and themes are out with more on the way.

now, i understand that development takes time, but given the potential of this tablet, i am somewhat dissapointed. i haven't really seen much progress past getting root, unlock, a recovery, a few roms based on stock, and one guy trying to port cm10. i guess what we are waiting for is the official jellybean upgrade before development picks up.

I feel you buddy, I'm coming from the Epic Touch forum that is very active in the development area. I too am disappointed with the lack of devs and ROMs for this tablet, but you have to realize its still fairly new and pretty expensive. I imagine most tablet devs would gravitate toward the Nexus 7 instead. Give it some time though, more will come.

yeah, and they released this iteration way too soon (<6 months i think) for devs to leave their primes
I think a lot of the devs have sent theirs back. I'm kind of wishing I had with mine. Pretty disappointed with the device so far.
One of the AOKP devs is working on a port to the tf700, and judging by his twitter the only major things holding him back from a release are issues with Bluetooth and some visual glitches. Once we have that, roms should follow since we'll have a working AOSP base.
His twitter account is here:

Actually to me, having custom ROMS on tablets is a little overrated. Root I can understand but seeing as I have owned the Xoom, Prime, and new the Infinity, must of the ROMS I have played with didn't add that much to the experience that stock already had. Outside of being able to use Sixaxis app, I have had little interest in rooting this Infinity. I think the wait for Jellybean is going to be with it.
Add in the fact that people are doing this on their free time, taking time away from their families, waiting a little bit won't hurt too bad.

Well to each their own, but to me, it's in custom development that you really begin to use the device to it's full potential. For instance, the OG Xoom has been literally given new life with EOS Jellybean builds. Yes, the Xoom wifi did get the JB OTA update, but stock JB is nowhere near as great as the EOS nightlies. They have tweaked it to capacity. The same will happen with the TF700 in time, I hope.
I also have the Nexus 7 and it's true that development has exploded for it, but honestly, it's a really limited device. For that reason, devs are in a performance competition...pushing things to the max. The TF700 though needs to be able to work really well...we'll need to be able to find the balance between high performance and stability. The fact that it's not really skinned is in its favor. It's not a Nexus device though and so some devs will not be interested in working with it.
Part of the problem in developing custom roms - which I have been doing for the Galaxy S 2/3 - is that currently you cannot decompile/recompile the SystemUI.apk file for the TF700T. XDA user iBotPeaches has taken over development of the apktool (tool to decompile/recompile APKs) project and is aware of the problem I and others are having. He is working to fix it.
As soon as it is fixed, I will be releasing a custom rom for the TF700T, but I need to make changes to the SystemUI.apk file. I can decompile/recompile the framework-res.apk file (have added CRT OFF effect already - and it works better than on my Galaxy S3).
So please have a little patience while the development tools are fixed and improved.
One other point to consider is that the Jelly Bean update is right around the corner, so putting much effort into modifying the current ICS version or actually making Jelly Bean work on the tablet is a waste of time.
