After browsing the Threads for a bit (and I use the word 'a bit' lightly since I'm limited on time at work) I've not really found an answer for the problem I'm having.
Over the weekend I took the plunge and entered into the world of Rooting and custom ROM's on my HTC Inspire 4G. The ROM of choice?
Android Revolution 4G 5.1.7
The results? Well, overall the phone feels nice and smooth. I've noticed that it lags pretty decently if I'm running certain internet radio apps and sometimes that my screen will go black, my home row (four buttons at the bottom of the screen) buttons will stay lit, and I can't make my phone DO anything. I guess this is a lock up? Anyways, these are all minor tweaks for me, and not a big big deal.
The big issue? My H+ is gone, and I don't mean the fact it just shows an H now instead. I mean the fact in areas where I use to get enough signal to stream music all night, I barely get signal, it drops randomly, or it'll play one song, and disconnect. I have to unlock the screen and restart the app altogether to get it playing again. Rinse, repeat. The speed has been a huge drop too. Standing outside my room where I was getting 1.5Mbps-2Mbps download speeds and about the same for upload, I'm now getting 512kbps download and maybe 80kbps upload...A HUGE difference.
I'm using the radio suggested in the thread for the ROM (Radio_12.54.60.25_26.09.04.11_M2) and I've tried a few others as well, and still see horrible results. Is there any suggestions about this, or is it time to find a new ROM/way back to the stock ROM and Radio?
Thanks.
I just flashed the same ROM coming from Android Revolution HD 4.0 β 4. Since I'm at work I haven't had a chance to flash the suggested radio yet for Revolution 5.1.7, still using the radio from the 4.0 β 4. I would try 12.41.60.19_26.06.04.14_M, I'm still getting the same signal strength that I was with the old ROM with the new.
Link Its in the middle of the first post.
How's the speed with the suggested Radio? Personally I'm a little disappointed with getting far slower speeds after the ROM swap and rooting the phone.
I'm in the middle of Dallas right now, but I'm getting 76ms ping, 5088kbps down and 1283kbps up. Thats about usual for where I'm at.
And on this ROM I don't know if it will even show an H+, mine just says H. Network says I'm on HSDPA...
Nice. I'll have to change the Radio when I get home and hope its the problem. Downloading at less than 1mbps with four bars and uploading at less than 100kbps kinda caps the phone to the point that my (censored) 4 actually looks less than unappealing lol. Did you do anything else that may be different? I haven't gotten the OTA update since the ROM change (from what I've read, that's not something we get anyways?) and I'm assuming that with this ROM we'll only ever see the H and not H+ like the stock ROM has?
Haven't done anything that I think would affect the signal/speed/data/whatever. This was a fresh download and install from about 3hours ago. If flashing that other radio fails, I would try a clean install, redownload rom, wipe everything that needs wiping and make sure to follow the directions exactly. If all that fails search that thread, FAQ's, I'm almost certain you're not the only one that has had this problem.
Its the second time I've wiped clean (even using the suggested download file he has on the thread for the wiping) with the same results, but I'll give it another whirl. Third time's the charm right? I'm just hoping the radio is the problem so that I can move on to figuring out why running Slacker and Meebo at the same time causes my phone to lag like a SOB now. D:
I had signal problem with the coredroid Rom. I am using stock radio. Make sure u flash RIL with the radio u are using. That will improve signal.

This link explains what RIL is and It also has links to RIL with What ever radio you are running. Just match the radio numbers and flash the Correct RIL

I'll give all the advice above a try and see what works out. Either way, if I can get it working, I'll be sure to mash a few Thank buttons. Lets hope this works, 'cause I'm digging this ROM (minus the uber slow down with Slacker Radio) a whole lot.

Well, I'm finally able to work on my phone, and get ready to download the suggested Radio when...File removed?! Hm, guess I'll have to look around and try to find where to download it from.
Okay, I've tried all the above methods, and even standing in an area with full signal (H, though dialing info with all the stars and such tells me I'm in HSDPA) and I'm still getting a download of about 625kbps and an upload of about...Well, 10kbps when it actually works. Any umm, suggestions or is my phone just SOL? I'd really hate to have to go back to the iDevice due to having a hot fast phone that has the connection speed to rival dialup. x.x'
@ Kuronen
I can help you out here, I had the same problem as you. It is because of the build.prop settings in the Android Revolution 4 roms.
If you need to know specifically how to do edit the file I would be happy to explain.
Here are my setting in the build.prop file that gave me 3mb/1.2mb up/down.
ro.ril.enable.a52.HTC-ITA=1 (probably a standards enforcement flag)
ro.ril.enable.a53.HTC-ITA=1 (...)
ro.ril.enable.a52=0 (this disables older type of encryption)
ro.ril.enable.a53=1 (enables encrption gsm?)
ro.ril.hsdpa.category=13 (this is a little higher than the chipset supports)
ro.ril.hsupa.category=7 (supposed to be the highest cat)
ro.ril.hsxpa=2 (this turns on both hsupa/hspa+?)
ro.ril.avoid.pdp.overlap=1 (this stabilized the connection)
ro.ril.enable.3g.prefix=1 (oddly enough, this doubled my speed!)
ro.ril.enable.hep=1 (I don't know what this does, it doesn't seem to make a diff)
ro.ril.enable.sdr=0 (this is to turn on software data radio, should not be needed)
ro.ril.enable.ucsq=2 (unkown)
ro.ril.enable.gea3=1 (this enables GSM encryption)
ro.ril.enable.prl.recognition=0 (if you are in china leave this as 1)
These settings give me good speeds. In other forums the 3G prefix command is supposed to only "label" the connection as 3G, but I have confirmed that in my area enabling the prefix actually doubles my downlink speed. So it must be flagging something elsewhere.
To edit the build.prop file after you have flashed to your phone you will need the android SDK kit. In general you have to log into the shell of the phone and remount the system partition as RW (read-write) then you can push the build.prop you edited and reboot. Just remember to edit the text file with an editor and uses unix style line feeds (like notepad2 ).

I'll have to give this a try when I get home. I've tried like 3 roms now all with decreasing luck, as well as a handful (including stock) of radios. Though, unless I can figure out why using Slacker Radio causes my phone to respond so slow that it takes a few minutes to move swipe screens, I may end up going back to stock anyways. As much as I don't want to.
Though, I'll give this a whirl first, and hopefully it'll fix my speed issue. I can give up Slacker if everything else works amazing, more so the batter life lol.
Edit: A walk through, or a link to one, would be utterly amazing. After looking at my SDK folder I realized I have no earthly clue how the heck to use it. All I can really do is find virtual devices. D=
On 5.1.6 and 5.1.7. All is fine here, including signal.
I get ~5mbps down and ~1.2 mbps up.
I see your on the Same rom as I am. I haven't fully read through this thread but I'm sure something in the mix u did might have made it to act funny. I have the same rom flash the recommended radio and flash The ril aswell and there seems to be no problem on my end. I'm around 2.5 megs down and 1.3 megs up. Also your phone SHOULD be much smoother and I don't seem to have any glitches on my phone. Also if u can setcpu off the android market that would help the smoothness of your phone with that rom. And if possible what's your build prop? Messing with that could improve signal but I wouldn't reccomend it. Let that be the last thing you mess with.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA Premium App
I've tried re hack-kitting it, different roms, radios, stock radio with different roms, etc, etc. Kernels updated, RIL and all that, and still get
150kbps download and 70kbps upload.
Massive huge drop from stock pre-root and all that where I was getting closer to 2mbps download and 1.5mbps upload. Which I can't seem to get anymore even with the stock ROM/Radio. Guess its a sign that I should've left things as they were.
I'll try to figure out how to edit build.prop but several hours of googling have given me plenty of 'oh just edit this!' threads, but nothing on detailed instructions on how to get to build.prop to edit.
Since I can't go without a phone for long (on call 24/7) I don't have the ability to sit down and spend a few days making it into a project while I go without a phone...So I guess until I can find a good tutorial on how to edit the build.prop and see if that's it, its time to go back stock.
No point in having a bad-a custom rom that makes it fast, sleek, and uses less battery if using the phone itself isn't enjoyable. No good net, means no good phone in my opinion.

I had the exact same problem. To be honest, I liked android revolution, but the speeds and signal were a BIG issue for me. I ended up going to a stock ROM that was rooted. I'm back to H+ and decent speeds. I was using CM7 before I loaded up android revolution and it was great. I only switched to revolution because I missed Sense.
I wish I could get my original speed back. D: Honestly it seems like I've lost out since I rooted my phone. I can barely push 1mbps download and 200kbps uploads now. And thats after completely unrooting and restoring my phone to stock. And I still can't play any Pandora/Slacker without opening my phone up over and over and fighting with it to connect. In a place where I use to stream for 8+ hours no problem.
Why do I have lower wifi signal on AOKP than on ROM X?
It doesn't apply just to AOKP, it also applies to ICSROM (yes, generic term to any ICS ROM)
You probably don't have lower signal. Use Wifi analyzer to verify your signal strength on ROM X and on ICSROM. Compare them. Do they match up? Yes? Okay, quit asking about it.

I agree, even though it looks as there in one bar on the wifi signal, my wifi signal is actually stronger than GB.
I know this because at work I have horrible reception and terrible wifi, compared to GB, ICS shows a weaker signal but works much better.
Wow, thanks FB.
That clears up a lot, and makes me feel better!

How the hell did you get a video to embed? I tried all sorts of stuff and couldn't do it. Is it reserved for devs and contributors? I figured like most BB, you just click the button, then put the link inside the command, but I couldn't get it to work for nothin.
Hint: There is an edit button if you want to add more to your posts. Forum etiquette dictates that you don't double post.
A double post is when you make a new post right after another of your posts. I see you do this a lot.
if you want to know what code someone used to make something, click on quote, it'll show you all the BBCODE used in a post. Please don't repost my OP though... It takes up a lot of room. Just look at it and don't hit submit.
Yeah, I do double post sometimes. I try to remember to just hit edit. I'm getting better at it though! I've been catching myself!
Edit:
I see now, how to embed. Thanks! Also, I don't know why you brought up the edit thing, because I haven't done that in a while, and I didn't do it in this thread. Anyways, I got it under control. Thanks for the wi-fi info! It had me slightly worried for a bit.
Yeah it's just the way the roms display the signal strength. You can always go into the rom options and have it display the wifi signal strength as text rather than an icon then you'll know how strong it is without even using the app. I just said to use the app because most BML roms don't have that option (except for Valhalla I think, maybe it was just mobile network signal though)
First off, I am new to Android devices.
I got a Nexus S 4g, and I really only wan to play games on it. I have AT&T, and got this used phone for free. So, instead of getting an Android tablet, I have a phone I can play with.
This includes flashing things as it's already unlocked!
So, I really only want three things (other the stability) if possible, the ability to turn off cellular usage and keep WIFI on, good performance for apps, and battery life.
Any suggestions on what Android OS to be running (ICS or JB) and a ROM & Kernel combination that would work? I have played around with a number of them, but I can't seem to notice any real difference.
I can and already have flashed a number of things, including having to flash the Android open source JB because of being stuck with Clockwork recovery not allowing a USB mount and the phone not booting from trying JellyBam.
Got TWRP on, and I'm happy with it. I also got an extended battery at 1850mAh.

You should still be able to use WiFi without activating it on Sprint.

And this should have been posted in the Q&A section. Just sayin...

CyanogenMod 10. It is fast and stable on the Nexus S4g.
Use without cellular and get speed eith life?
Type *#*#4636#*#* into your dialer and it will open a testing menu. Open phone info and scroll down and turn off radio. Now the cellular radio will not operate at all or use any battery, so your battery life will jump quite a bit. Also some roms have a function to hide the radio signal indicator. As an added bonus, you can use google voice and grooveIP to make and recieve phone calls and texts over a wifi connection for free!
Edit: this works on every rom I have tried.

True, but the battery died in about 2 hours of WiFi usage. When I got the phone, it had CM9 RC2 on it already. That's with trying a couple different kernels and setting the CPU to "On Demand". It wasn't worth it.

I was simply saying that I don't want the radio on because I am on AT&T. I should have explained that because I can't use it, I would rather disable it so it's not using any of the battery.

Oddly enough, I have had SlimBean RC2 preform random reboots. It's a shame as it seemed to go so well and I really liked the custom DPI settings.
Update : Seems that I had something of an improper flash. I used TWRP and ran multiple flashes in a row.
I ran it again, and flashed the ROM, restarted into recovery, flashed GApps inverted, repeated, and flashed the Matr1x CFS kernel.
Is there a way to replace the per-installed Holo launcher? I like the Nova Launcher as it seems to use less RAM and I can have everything with a cube animation. If possible, I would like to remove the Holo HD Launcher as I have no need for it.

You can use titanium backup to push nova to system and then freeze holo if you like or ever remove it.
I have found after replacing the launcher, SlimBean has become unstable. Every so often, it crashes and reboots. Aside from re-flashing, any other advise?
Also, the battery life seems to be just so so. I tried the kernel included and Matr1x 25.
AOKP with Matr1x seems to be rather stable and ok with the battery.

thanks for the quick reply
Why this happens ?
its something with the kernel ? or drivers why no use original ones ?
That's a question for "Google"
Actually if you read the threads taking about this specifically the one by jeffsf he has a theory that Samsung knew many of the devices had crappy WiFi hardware and that is why the device had tons of leaked builds. They kept releasing then in hope of fixing the reception and ultimately just faked a better signal.

I saw that the big impact with wifi is make by the kernel you install, cause switching modem always the wifi signal is the same but when you change the kernel you see some diferents.
There is no super duper trick to get better wifi. What Samsung did was modify the data file to reflect a higher level. It is a visual trick and one that tricks the OS into thinking the signal is higher also so it does not disconnect as much.
What erikmm did before is change the signal bars from a actual representation to a false reading that made people think they had a better signal. Turn off the bars and use dBm readings and you will see the real signal.
This phone has a really crappy radio reception and there is not much you can do outside of what samsung did and make the signal bars read I higher rating. I think it was jeffsf that said the best solution would be to hack the wifi module and make it read all signals at a increase of 5-10 dBm so it wouldnt drop the wifi so often.

I actually didn't do what eollie said to trick people I did it because of information another dev told me then I gave it a shot I saw improvements for me and thought it might improved but again if it's not you don't have to flash it or complain. Show me where I said you did it to purposely to deceive people.
Furthermore at the time you where posting those roms there was NO source code to edit.
If you are still doing that code modification then you are now purposely deceiving people.
To clarify if people think I was saying erikmm did it purposely then you are wrong. I dont know what his intentions was initially.
First off, I want to be clear, I don't know what was/is different in Erikmm/Beastmode's ROM. At the time it was released, source was not available to examine, and I haven't dug into what has since been posted. I also hypothesize that Samsung was, among other things that T-Mobile probably wanted them to change, tweaking the "calibration" of the WiFi in the various leaked releases and that the "nice" version wasn't in the final release. Considering that the "official" release modem has problems with long SMSs, it wouldn't surprise me that the low RSSI numbers reported weren't caught either. I don't work at Samsung or T-Mobile, so this is my personal speculation and opinion of a likely scenario.
I have tested WiFi pretty extensively and it is my personal belief that the RF portion of this phone just sucks; WiFi, GPS, and quite possibly Bluetooth, but nobody has complained about the last one. Unfortunately, the leaks were hosted on sites later shut down by the FBI so that getting those versions to examine as well was not possible.
If you want to "fudge" the signal levels, the details of one way to do it are in the linked thread. It will require you to create a build environment, populate it with the source of your choosing, edit WifiManager.java, and compile at least the framework. It could also be done within the kernel driver. Since I find that levels below where the current crop of ICS ROMs believe are "no bars" I don't get more than around 1 Mbps over WiFi and I do generally have decent T-Mobile signal, I just use my carrier for data when the WiFi level is low.
MY QUESTIONS:
1) Is it possible to use the old Samsung RIL blob (not Replicant) with CM11? How would one go about doing that? The radios no longer include the RIL/CSC. Is there a version that does, that works with CM11?
2) Are there any ROM's that use the old/original RIL (not Replicant) while still keeping up with the latest Android versions ala CM? (Ie. KitKat)
Backstory:
Before I go barking up the wrong tree, hopefully someone with a little more knowledge can help me understand if what I would like is possible.
After upgrading to CM10.1, and ever since, I have had very poor reception (voice and data). Since moving to a new location, which should have had better reception, it has gotten bad enough that I started investigating things more deeply. The issue is that I will show 4 bars(-75-81db) then inevitably within a few minutes it would shoot down to -115, and then no service. Eventually it would come back. It was always really evident when trying to dial out too, either going into to no service from 4 bars while trying to dial, or within the first 30 seconds of a call.
It seems that with CM10.1 a new open source RIL was adopted (Replicant?). After hours of research, and trying new modems (UCMC1 & UXUMA7), old modems (and at one point thought I had lost my efs lol) that didn't work at all with 10.1+, I have found, as a few others have, that downgrading to CM10.0 dramatically improves reception (in service, instead of NO SERVICE) for those with marginal reception to begin with.
This is at home, usually with WiFi connected, so it is really about just having a working phone at home. I understand that it is possible that the WiFi might interfere with the cell service in some cases on this particular phone, but the dramatic difference (cell reception working vs not working) between CM10.0 and CM10.1+ with the same radio (UCMC1) for me leads me to believe that it CAN work with WiFi, at least.

honestly my first thought would be to ask about what carrier you have? does the issue happen on stock ROM? also I've never heard of a RIL helping aid with improving reception lol maybe you know something I don't.
The only time I've had your issue is when I'm in an LTE area with low LTE reception. My signal would jump from low LTE signal to 4 bars of H+ constantly trying to keep the weak LTE signal for some reason lol.
If that helps hit the like button!!
Current ROM, kernel, radio, and recovery, what are you using.

Not sure what other info you would need. Currently CM10.0 works best (not perfect but usable), so I am using that. I've tried a number of different radios(UCMC1 is currently installed, but tried many others) and settings under network preferences (currently wcdma preferred is my setting). I used twrp 2.6ish up until I tried CM11, and had to revert to CWM to get that to install properly. So the latest CWM. CM kernel obviously(?).
