}
4. Run Script.bat
5. Type 22 and then chose the apk you would like to edit, once that is done then next use option 1 to extract the apk
6. Browse over to the project folder and look for your extracted apk
7. Now head into
res/drawable-mdpi/ and locate the icon.
*Note* Some APKs do not have this folder, the icon may also be located in
res/drawable/ or
res/drawable-hdpi
8. Go online and find a high resolution icon, then use photoshop or any image editor to cleanup and resize the icon to 192x192
9. Once you have the hi res version of the icon go ahead and replace the lower resolution one.
10. In APK Manager, choose option 3 (Zip apk),
then option 2 (Regular apk <Removes signature for re-signing>)
11. Once that competes it will take you back to the main menu of APK Manager, Now choose option 4 (Sign apk <Dont do this if its a system apk>)
12. If everything was successful you should now see two apks in your modding folder
13. Take the signed version of the apk and adb push it to your device, dropbox it, or copy to kindle using usb cable
14. Uninstall version if already installed and then install your modified version.
(Trying to install over a installed version results in a failure for me)
15. Icon should be nice and high res!

Dude you're the man. If it's okay with you, can I throw the link to your thread in my original questions so that it will help people that stumble onto the old thread?

Nice dude! Link is up.

Does this method require a rooted device? I followed your instructions for the Facebook APK and every time I try to install it I get an error: "There was a problem parsing your file."

Try installing the current facenook app. If that doesn't work. Idk ive only tried on rooted

I pick my apps and the compression size but now when i hit extract the command prompt closes which i assume it should. But, there is nothing showing up in my projects folder.
screw it. if someones got the modified apk for draw something post it here please. free version of course.

what app are you trying to sign

That or you have spaces in it's name. Renamed it so it doesn't have any spaces.

Try option 20. Set max memory size to 256 mb.

Awesome, thank you.

Does anyone have their high-res icons they can pass along? I'm being lazy.

hi, I am a new user for Kindle Fire HD, and i tried to follow the same routine to mod the Dolphin Browsers app to get a clear carousel icon.
after i change 1 icon in the apk to 256x256, and install it again, sth strange happened.
The dolphin browser icon NEVER shows again in the Carousel.....
It never shows up again after use....
does anyone have clues that how can I make that icon appear on my carousel again?
i have tried to reinstall the original apk , newer version apk, rebooting many times, but still not appear after use.....
thanks in advance!
Update: Found a solution to this. Tried to kill the "launcher" service by a task managing app, (AirDroid) thinks any of these app will do, and guess even the official "force stop" button under the application menu might work also.
After that, when the launcher restart, Icons showing properly! Thanks for the Guide!

This is a great thread, now got high-res icons for most of my apps, some are hard to find images for or just don't have any decent ones to use, mainly found that to be games, also I've found replacing & rebuilding/signing some apps have a really negative affect on them, games such as Riptide GP boot up slower or some just don't load, Cut the Rope won't play it's intro video etc.
Come across this as well - developer.amazon.com/sdk/fire/cx-guidelines.html
Amazon recommends 425x425 for the KFHD 7" carousel image, that's what size I've been using & most look really nice & crisp depending on the original image quality, 256x256 I found too pixelated on the carousel but maybe that's just me
If anyone want's them I've zipped up my images I've used on my KFHD 7", not a huge amount by any means but could be helpful to some.
Most of the images are resized from 512x512 to 425x425 PNG so look great on the KFHD, a very small number are lower resolution (256x256) due to their being no higher quality versions available on the internet that I could find.
rghost.net/42367507
Also ImageTuner is a pretty decent program to resize/convert images in bulk to different sizes etc.

Hello, I'm having a problem signing the apk. It says there's an error and to check the log, and when I do, it says that the unsigned apk cannot be found. So I started checking and at first it does appear, but as soon as I try to sign it disappeared. Also, I tried the 20 option, by changing the max memory size to 256 as you suggested but it did not work.

Cannot download
I cannot download from your multiupload links, it directs me to iLivid.

Problems signing the apk
Have followed the procedure step-by-step and I get an error at step 11 after I select '4' to sign the apk. Have also tried increasing the max memory to 256 as suggested - still no luck.
Any other suggestions?
As a desperate alternative, I zipped the apk (at step 10) then selected '1' (instead of '2') so that I have an unsigned apk sitting in my modding folder, with a view to getting it signed using Sign+_v1.2.2 - this leaves me with a signed apk file but when I try to install it on my Kindle Fire HD, I get a parsing error.
Any help from anybody GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks in advance

OLD:
While reading Gizmodo, I stumbled across an article about the PirateBox, an offline network for sharing files. I wanted to do this, but I didn't want to buy all the supplies. Instead, I decided to use an old Android phone, my HTC Hero (Sprint) that got abandoned after upgrading to an EVO 4G. In reality, any phone with Android, root, and WiFi woill work just fine.
Materials
Android Device
root
Wireless Tether App (market)
PAW Server (attached)
SDCard
Pirate Lunchbox (Not necessary)
BatteryPack (Not Necessary)
Instructions
First, get on the internet and download the "Wireless Tether for Root Users" app. This will establish our PirateBox Network.
Set up the name to "PirateBox" or anything you like. Make the network "open"
Download and install the APK below. This version of PAW Server includes PirateBox, and the forwarding stuffz. Credits to joschi70
Make a folder called "piratebox" on the root of the SDCard
Next, Start the Tether app.
Start PAW Server
Finally, test the system out by uploading a file from another device. If all works well, the file will be at the folder called "piratebox" under the "html" folder where the pages are.
EXTRA: For an almost-exact replica of the original PirateBox, place your device in a Pirate lunchbox with a battery pack.
How It Works
This works by the users joining the "PirateBox" network. PAW Server then serves the site. The page uses BeanShell Code because PAW Server does not like PHP and because BeanShell is supported by PAW. In the recent versions, joschi70 has changed PirateBox from a half-working project to a fully-working install-on-the-fly system. He has redesigned PirateBox to an almost-precise replica of the original PirateBox. He is also the one to get forwarding woking, so he deserves all credit for finishing this. I just started it
Other Stuff
NOW MORE PROBLEMS!!!!!11!!1!!!!!!1!!!!1
In order for this to work, you have to use "Wireless Tether for Root Users" and NOT the native tethering in ROMS like CyanogenMOD and MIUI. In fact, DO NOT use a rom with Native Tethering functionality. It screws up the ENTIRE connection to PirateBox. Sense is proven to work, since this was all tested on a Sprint Hero. MotoBlur and TouchWiz are not yet proven.
EDIT: Attached is a "server.txt" without the 2MB limit added by PAW. Rename the "server.txt" to "server.xml". Then, place "server.xml" in "sdcard/paw/conf/server.xml". Also, installation process is alot simpler thanks to Joschi70. He is the developer of PAW and has made an APK with PirateBox built in. His version looks more like the original and works more efficiently.
Original PirateBox: http://wiki.daviddarts.com/PirateBox
Credits to David Darts for inspiring me to roll my own with what I had.
Also, credits to joschi70, the developer of PAW, for the PirateBox bundle AND for fixing forwarding! Now enter any website address and it redirects to PirateBox! YAY and HIGH FIVE to joschi70!
pretty cool
pretty cool, but what it really needs is to also list all of the files in the piratebox folder on the main page so that other people can download them. I haven't actually tried the original piratebox but I thought that was the point, to set up a quick anon local filesharing page so you can swap files between friends at lunch. I've never used BeanShell but it should be easy enough to do.
If you need some help with the scripts let me know.
The PAW setup should not be the problem.
What might be more difficult is to get the HTTP traffic redirect working.
Hi, great work got this working on my HTC Desire (without root) using the normal tether functionality. The only problems so far the files you upload can't be downloaded cause the uploaded files are not visible trough the website. If this functionality can be added this would be awesome.
Where can I download the "official" PirateBox web pages?
Exchanging the PHP scripts should be easy.
If someone can provide a link, I would start making the PAW scripts.
wiki.daviddarts.com/PirateBox_DIY
anything here usefull?
I had a look there, but could only found some files, but not all of them.
Maybe I've overlooked something.

I'm adding the file browsing functionality and the original uses Python.
Updated with File Browsing and changed location of uploaded files.
This must be a pretty stupid question, but the file upload size limit is 2 megabytes if a file is larger than that, the browser gives the error 'connection has been reinitialized'.
Am I the only one having this problem?
This is not a stupid question
The default upload size of PAW is 2MB. There will be an update soon, with a much higher limit.
You can change this manually by editing the <maxPost /> line in the PAW configuration (/sdcard/paw/conf/server.xml).

I have attached a "server.xml" in the original post. I just added 24 0's after "1". if anyone wants to calculate that, i'll be happy to know how many MB's that is
Awesome!

Your welcome! We are still trying rerouting methods. hopefully that gets fixed soon. Should make uploading easier.
<strike>I don't know anything about programming linux, and just a very little html. But I'll be your bugreporter from now on. Because I would love to help the project.
I installed the app from joschi70. But after you upload a file it will be in /sdcard/piratebox
But if you are browsing files it will check /sdcard/paw/html/piratebox
Or is it just my Desire HD that does that kind of stuff</strike>
Edit:
Removed /sdcard/piratebox and created /sdcard/paw/html/piratebox
got it working 100% now

I have to look into it because joschi70's apk saves to /sdcard/piratebox/ and browses that same directory, not to /sdcard/paw/html/piratebox.
EDIT: Try to uninstall joschi's PirateBox bundle, delete /paw from your SDCard, and reinstall joschi's PAW/PirateBox APK
I already tried that
Whenever you come to the piratebox homepage and click
2. To view files uploaded to PirateBox, click here.
It says: Got the error: Not Found
while trying to obtain /piratebox
whenever you upload something and click:
3. Browse and download
files here.
It will take you to the files you have previously uploaded
At least this is the problem with mine?
I've deleted /sdcard/paw
and reinstalled the app
Let me look into it...

[Live Wallpaper] Asus MyWater Reworked w/ tutorial (no root required)

As I mentioned in another thread, I was intrigued by Ruvort's modifications to the Asus MyWater live wallpaper over at xoomforums.com and some of the work from similar xda developers threads here and here.
The most common issue with using these modified live wallpapers is that they simply replace the default Asus MyWater live wallpaper, which limits you to having one at a time and causes additional difficulties for Transformer owners since the Asus MyWater live wallpaper is a system application. I have been in contact with Ruvort and plan on working with him to re-release his live wallpapers with the necessary adjustments so that they can all coexist and multiple flavors can be installed at the same time; even on non-rooted tablets.
These reworked MyWater live wallpapers are my initial step into the arena of editing APK files. They can be installed and uninstalled like any other application, however allowing installation of non-Market applications is required. I should note that in order to prove out some edits I made to the smali disassembly files, I adapted Ruvort's excellent work for the beer w/ lime wallpaper and I hijacked his idea for the ducky wallpaper.
Update: On a whim, I decided to check the alignment of the APK files using zipalign. I found that the resources in the wallpapers needed adjustment, so I have corrected the alignment for all the attached wallpapers. If you downloaded and installed any wallpaper from this post prior to June 24th 2011, I recommend replacing with an optimized version.
Update 2: It has been discovered that these live wallpapers have issues when running on ICS. I am aware of the issues and have been working toward a solution (one recent attempt here). While workarounds have been reported, I have not tried any of them myself and prefer to address the problem at its source. Once I am confident that I have things working correctly, I intend on starting a new thread to feature the updated, ICS-friendly designs. Stay tuned...

Creating the Reworked MyWater Wallpapers
The following is an overview of the process I followed in creating the live wallpapers found in the first post. These instructions are intended to serve as a guide to those interested in creating their own modifications.
Prerequisites
Asus MyWater APK (you can grab a copy here)
android-apktool - tool for reengineering Android apk files (here)
roptipng - modification to OptiPNG PNG optimizer (here)
SignApk.jar - (Google search)
zipalign - archive alignment tool (included in Android SDK)
Step 1 - Decoding the APK
Using apktool, decode the APK to retrieve the resources into nearly original form. In this example, the decoded files are placed in a directory called MyWaterDir.
Code:
apktool decode MyWater.apk MyWaterDir
Step 2 - Modifying the package name
The package name is a unique identifier used by Android to manage the installed applications. The easiest package name modification simply involves changing all instances of asus to another unique identifier.
Using your favorite editor (I like gVim), modify the package name found in MyWaterDir/AndroidManifest.xml (com.asus.livewallpaper) and MyWaterDir/res/xml/glwallpaper.xml (com.asus.livewallpaper.gl.MyWaterSettings). There are only 2 instances of the package name in the XML files.
The package name is also embedded in the smali disassembly files (MyWaterDir/smali/com/asus/livewallpaper/gl/*.smali). In all, there are 1791 instances of the package name in the smali files that must be updated. My recommendation is to find an editor that makes it easy to perform a global search and replace.
The package name must also match the folder hierarchy under the smali folder (MyWaterDir/smali/com/asus/livewallpaper/gl/). Change the name of the asus folder to match the new unique identifier selected for the application.
Step 3 - Update the application name and settings text
Using your favorite editor, modify the text found in MyWaterDir/res/values/strings.xml. Rather than worry about translations for my updated text, I chose to remove all but the default by deleting the MyWaterDir/res/values-XX folders (keep values-large).
Step 4 - Update the image resources
The image resources are found in MyWaterDir/res/drawable-mdpi. You can modify these images or use your own. For the purpose of this tutorial there is a requirement that they maintain the original file naming scheme. It is also important to note that if you provide an image with different dimensions, it will be scaled to match the dimensions of the original image. Modifications to the smali disassembly files are required to overcome this limitation.
As an optional step, you can optimize the PNG image resources to reduce their size.
Code:
roptipng -o7 MyWaterDir/res/drawable-mdpi/*.png
Step 5 - Build the APK
Now that the desired modifications have been made, build the APK using apktool.
Code:
apktool build MyWaterDir MyWaterModified_unsigned.apk
Step 6 - Sign the APK
The Android system requires that all installed applications be digitally signed with a certificate whose private key is held by the application's developer. I followed the instructions found here or here for generating my keys and using them to sign the APK. It should also be possible to sign the APK using the approach recommended at developer.android.com.
Code:
java -jar signapk.jar certificate.pem key.pk8 MyWaterModified_unsigned.apk MyWaterModified_signed.apk
Step 7 - Zipalign the APK
Zipalign the APK to optimize the way it is packaged in order to enable the Android operating system to interact with the application more efficiently. The benefit of this step is a reduction in the amount of RAM consumed when running the application.
Code:
zipalign -f -v 4 MyWaterModified_signed.apk MyWaterModified.apk
________________________
The truly adventurous can take a stab at modifying the smali disassembly prior to building the APK. The syntax is a bit difficult to follow at first, but with proper modifications you can adjust the image dimensions, rendering locations, and much more. I found it useful to pull the classes.dex file from the APK, convert it from .dex to .class format using dex2jar, and then browse the reconstructed source using JD-GUI. It is important to remember that the reconstructed source is not a 100% match to the original source code. However, it is useful for comparing against and understanding the corresponding smali source.

Thanks for documenting the process
These are great, thanks so much for your effort here.
Fantastic work man.
I appreciate the praise I've received for this work. I took a couple hours this evening to throw together another version containing one of my favorite lake monsters. Nessie is definitely one of the biggest "ice cubes" I've used for these wallpapers.
It might be worth pointing out that in order to render "ice cube" images larger than the original 324 x 226 ice cube, the GLIceItem constructor should be edited to specify the desired dimensions.
I spent a little while playing around with this this evening, and came up with a rough version of one of my own. It needs some refining, and I'll work on it some more when I get a little time. You need to turn off the rotate with screen setting for it to work properly with the background. I'd like to figure out a way to make the background rotate and move with the water, but that will take some time.
I've attached a screen shot. I don't think I can attach a file from tapatalk, so I'll try to attach the apk later.
Edit: Apk is attached.
Let me know what you guys think. If anyone has any suggestions, especially regarding having the background rotate, please let me know. Thanks.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
EDIT: The lighthouse/landscape is now part of the floating element, so it floats and rotates with the buoy. It has a noticeably different effect, almost as if you are moving with the water instead of the other way around. Anyway, take a look at it and let me know what you think.
Here's my second attempt. This one rotates just fine.
Thanks to you, it's nice.

There are a lot of possibilities for these wallpapers.
While I prefer to distance myself from using copyrighted images, the Jaws and Winnie the Pooh movie posters could provide some inspiration.

UPDATE
-Version 1.1.35 works without modifications. Purchase from the market then side load (thanks Philburkhardt)
OLD
Hey guys I found the ultimate fix that remedies the landscape issue and allows you to play the game without chain fire. I received this tip from user Brazooka from another forum, I'm not sure if this fix has been posted here but I'll just add it on in case someone missed it.
"The issue is not the APK but the SD Data...
That's what I did:
- Used v1.1.37 APK cracked by Nops
- SD Data downloaded via Wi-Fi (let the game download)
This way the game works fine with Chainfire3D (Qualcomm plugin)
If you want to run the game without Chainfire:
- download the "SD for ALL" ( Which I will not link here for obvious reasons)in the first topic. Extract ONLY these directories:
\ea\deadspace\published\ParticleBaseTextures
\ea\deadspace\published\texturepacks_ui
\ea\deadspace\published\textures
- overwrite the previous ones, the ones the game itself downloaded from EA servers.
VOILA!"
I haven't put much time into it so if anyone has any issues feel free to let us know.
I found THIS thread. Maybe it will help. It's worth a shot.

That's what I'm hoping will happen, but the fact that no other EA games are compatible with the Transformer isn't giving me much hope. The Transformer can't even access Flexion. I finally got Need for Speed Shift working on the TF. I bought it months ago for my EVO. I had to jump through flaming hoops to get it running. There are even currently two versions on the market, at two different pricepoints. Neither of them are compatible with the TF, WTF? As far as I'm concerned, EA is currently no better than Gameloft. Placing [email protected]#t hardware requirements on their games. I would love for EA to prove me wrong and open up Dead Space for a wide variety of devices, after the month long Xperia Play exclusive period ends. But, seeing as I still can't play the Sims 3 I bought 9 months ago on my TF, I'm not expecting it.
Sorry for the mini-rant .
I think the problem could be fixed via the AndroidManifest.xml file inside the APK. The file specifies orientation, and what priority it takes.
I made a custom xml file for it.. not sure if it works, but someone would need to repackage the apk with it. I am not having any luck getting a apk to repack today...

If you want to post it, I'll give it a shot. Won't be able to post the apk if it works, because it would be warez. But I could maybe confirm.

That is perfectly understandable. As long as you could confirm, I think that would satisfy most people here that it is fixable.
Here is the link: http://db.tt/F1FIOQc
All it does is edit this line:
Code:
<activity android:name=".DeadSpaceActivity" android:configChanges="keyboardHidden|orientation">
to:
Code:
<activity android:name=".DeadSpaceActivity" android:screenOrientation="landscape" android:configChanges="orientation"/>
I'm not having much luck. I'm able to get the apk together and re-sign it. But, it isn't showing up as an installable apk on my tf.

Thats the problem I was having. I am not sure what is causing it either. Its above my head.
Been trying to figure it out. The simple line change shouldn't of changed anything to that effect..
If anything, it might be the forward slash I added at the end of the statement. Could try removing that, and giving it another shot.
Edit: Nevermind. I was able to get it to compile. It was the slash. No go. I will continue to take a look at it.
any one fix it?
Nope. At least I haven't yet. Everything I have tried, it ignores. I have a feeling that its something deeper then just the AndroidManifest.xml file.
Been looking at the .java data for an override statement, but I did not see one.
Pretty much at a dead end from my end.

Manually replace the .apk in /data with this .apk using a root explorer or ADB?
Just wondering if anybody thought of it.
Just restore a backup when it most likely doesn't work anymore.
White screen
Hello,
I have transferred dead space to my sdcard root, and installed Chainfire 3D with the plugins (I pressed on all three, and had them install). However, I still get the white screen overlay when I start the game. Is there some way to get rid of this?
Thanks,
kiambogo

Great GUI yossio, Runs very smoothly.
Just a quick question:
If i use up to 39 images, it runs fine on my phones.
But if i use any more the 39 images, it always causes "Force Closes" when i try to apply the installed wallpaper.
I've had a look but can't find a reason why this is happening.
Any idea why this might be happening?
The 2 phones i'm using are:
* SE Xperia Play (2.3.4)
* HTC Desire (2.3)
Thanks.
well i got it to work with 300 images. what is the size of the apk? live wallpapers that are big tend to crash. also, you might wanna play with the settings and see if it runs on a smaller scale. i can take a look and test your apk, send an email to [email protected]
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
got your email. something with the image file names is strange... can you attach the gif file or sen via email?
thanx
After a long night of trial and error this is where i'm at.
I tested an apk (created by irkkso) which uses 149 images and it installed and ran without any problems on both my phones.
I unpacked his apk and used those 149 images to create 2 new apk's using 1st: your LWPCreatorb1, then 2nd: using Daneshm90's LWP2.6.
I then tried both apk file on both phones: Installed fine but when selecting the wallpaper they cause "Force Closes" everytime.
Now the weird part:
i run both LWPCreatorb1 and LWP2.6 again after deleting 110 of the images to leave only 39 images.
The apk files from both creators now work Perfectly on both phones.
Why using any more then 39 images causes "Force Closes" has me stumped
I've Tried:
*Windows 7 32bit & 64bit
*Windows XP 32bit
*Windows 7 32bit - Fresh OS install, Java 6u62, Net Framework 4.0
*Windows 7 32bit - Fresh OS install, Java 6u62, Net Framework 3.5
It can't be Java right? Java's only used here to sign the apk's.
It can't be the image files, because these test were done with images taken from irkkso's apk which worked fine.
It could be Net Framework..... but i doubt it.
Is there something i'm missing here? hmmmmm.
yep it must be the bat file.... i'll dig into it tonight...
thank you so much for the feedback!
Any Luck???
Love what you have made here and the fact that it will work with the newer versions of android. I am getting an error when I use this, where it really messes up the place images and puts them out of sequence. Any idea what is going on with this? I had tried to use 157 images, and am about to test it with much less to try and find out were the problem lies.
Ok so image size doesn't seem to be an issue for me. However I am getting a weird error with my image sequences. For most of my sequences it will not recognize the first image n01 and then it renames the tenth image as n010 and leaves n10 as a blank spot just as it does with the first. I did get one image sequence to work without any flaws, all the settings and namings for the images is exactly the same so I don't know where the problem is.
Hey, I tried installing the software but it crashed right after while trying to run.
I just get an error message when I try to open it:

I just have one issue, after "compile" my wallpaper, install the apk in my phone and set as my Live Wallpaper, I got a blink (fast blank screen) in every animation loop. I already check the files and doesnt seem have any white screen for cause this effect.
Could you help me?
Im using pre rendered images from 3D Studio Max renamed to nXX.jpg
Thank you and keep the good work, and sorry for my english.

This is the same issue that I am having. If you check the output folder after it compiles the apk you will see that it is leaving some of the number spots as blank jpegs, ussually around n10.
i think i found out the faulty script line i'll try fixing it this weekend ... i'll post the update here
Thank you for fast reply.
Last question. Could I use my personal key to sign the apk while compiling with your creator?
that is working already I just need some time compiling and uploading
Promise, this weekend it will be here
Cool man, I will donate in few days to keep good work.
Animation Speed
Is there a way to control how fast the animation runs, i.e. how quick it switches between images?
Plus how is the new version coming along?

[GUIDE] How to edit App Icons Manually

Oh well, if you're like me that loves to do the things I could do the hardcore geeky way without the help of apps and tools, unless obviously using an app will save you a lot of time, then you're on the right thread.
Anyway this will be my first howto guide on xda-dev, please be nice . This will be a noob to noob guide, taking every step into consideration. If you've got any issues getting it done, please don't hesitate to leave a comment, so let's have a ride to geekville.
As you'd know, changing app icons is something every lover of awesome interface and design can't do without, and we've got Android Launchers that will do this for you on the go, but really, they just change the icons of the apps in the drawer and not globally, for example, Whatsapp's icon changed with a launcher only changes in the app drawer and not the entire whatsapp ecosystem, even worse, the minute you revert back to your stock launcher, it changes to the original icon.
Here's an illustration:

As you can see in the image above, its the same es file explorer app but different icons, that's going to be our goal in this guide, changing the icons globally, if you changed the icon with a launcher, you'll only get your new icon replaced in the app drawer. So let's change our first icon.
Requirements.
A PC.
Apk Icon Editor By kefir500
iConvert Icons for Windows
Java Runtime Environment for signing the resulting apk by Apk Icon Editor. You can get it here.
An icon you'd like to replace for the old one.
Your time.
iConverticons.com actually does have an icon converter for the mac platform but since Apk Icon Editor is written in C++ for the Windows platform , what's the point? . Also the iConverticons utility does have a free version, don't know why they had to hide it on the site, you can just grab the free one from softpedia anyway, only costs you 10 seconds on every startup of the app.
Once you're done downloading the files from the links above, run their respective setups and grab any .apk file you'd like to try out in your android's
Code:
/data/app/
directory, (you're pro'lly going to need root access to mess with this directory, but you can always grab any .apk elsewhere).
1. Copy the .apk file to anywhere on your pc.
2. Now, get the icon you'd like to replace ready, it could be in the same path as your .apk file, doesn't matter, but preferrably go for a 512px icon size, you'll be glad you did. I'll be replacing the stock whatsapp icon with a flatter alternative by DtafAlonso on DeviantArt.
3. Start up the iConverticons app, then wait for its 10 seconds delay thing, before we create the icons, we need to modify the preferences for the conversion output, make yours match the images below.
4. Next, drag and drop the icon you want replaced in the iConverticons app, this will be followed with a dialog of where you want the resulting icons replaced, choose the folder you created earlier as the output folder and in about a second you should see a "Done" message.
5. Now go to that folder where the outputs from the conversion was saved, you should now see a set of icons in different folders namely xxhdpi, xhdpi, hdpi, ldpi and mdpi.
6. Start up apk-icon-editor.exe, then drag and drop your .apk file into the app's workspace, you'll get a progress bar showing that the package is being extracted and the contents of the AndroidManifest.xml file.
7. You will now see the original whatsapp icons in this window, Select the right icon size/dpi on the right, and then Right Click > Replace Icon ..then select the right icon size from the right conversion folder. The icon is replaced immediately, do these for the other sizes of the icons, you can choose to make the icons stay at just one size even on small devices, (just make sure you choose not to resize it if the editor asks if you want the icon resized).
8. Once you're done, Click "Pack Apk" and choose the destination folder you'd want your new apk file saved. You can choose to overwrite the previous one or have a copy of it named anything you like[dot]apk.
9. Then copy the new .apk file to your phone's sdcard and uninstall the app if it was present on your phone already, (installing the same app on your phone will cause the installation to fail), then install it.
Now you have a unique icon for that app.
NOTE: If you're curious as to why the original .apk file and the new one have different sizes, this is caused by the size of the icons you used, so for example, you might have an original size of 15.6MB and a new size of 15.45MB. one more thing, I have noticed apps like BBM misbehave when you touch their app icons something about them having conflicts with how the package was signed, so you can try this out with other apps apart from BBM and please tell me what apps break for you when you try it.
Does this work for the latest version of whatsapp? Version 2.16.259
Does this work for the latest version of whatsapp Version 2.16.259?
I tried to use a couple apk editor apps which have not worked. When you replace the original apk Whatsapp does not let you log in it seems like it checks with their server whether the apk is legitimate or not.
