[Q] Required info for Best Buy (employee) discount through T-mobile - General Questions and Answers

Heya,
I know T-mobile offers discounts to employees of Best Buy, but was wondering what information a T-Mo CSR would ask me for to apply the discount to my account? An associate in the store tried recently when I told her I worked at Best Buy, but something was wrong with her PC...she said I just needed to call #611 and tell them.
Is there a way for them to verify through a database or something? Or do you just need to give them something simple like a store # perhaps?

/one and only bump

I currently work at mobile. First off that consultant is a dumb ****. No way to add the discount for you even if you actually work at best buy. We would need your numbers and rep stuff. Secondly you need a best buy email address to verify. you need to then log on that email and verify some stuff. No wayfor you to get a discount sorry. Depending on the mobiles Verizon rep they can get you 25% off. Monthly Bill.

Walmart has Captivate for $229 no contract

Looks like Walmart may be the newest to have made a pricing mistake. Placed an order before they could change it. Question is, will I have a new 2 year contract in the coming weeks?
Here is a link:
Captivate for $229
If anyone else jumped on this, leave your comments in here. I'll take it as a group effort to see if anyone else gets hit with a new contract.
**Thanks to samven582 over at AndroidForums for finding this
***Link fixed now. Still waiting to see if my order was canceled
In for one..
I got one at a corporate store early, but paid $499. If this shows up tomorrow or Tuesday I will be a happy man.. Thanks OP!
Wait, so this is like buying the phone outright, no contracts, no plan, nothing? In other word for $230 you get a 16GB phone and could just use it as an mp3/media player just like an ipod touch? If that's the case I am so getting this. Someone please verify.

Phone should be here Tuesday or Wednesday, so I'll report back then if any changes have happened. I just added a data plan so there was no confusion about getting a new plan. The only thing that has me worried is they ask for the last 4 of the SSN, and the number of the phone. Hopefully they don't use my upgrade cause I will be quite upset. But I will update as I see changes.
The link in the first post makes you choose a data plan... but apparently if you do, you can get the phone for free?
I don't see a "no contract" option.

I think this is probably a special one day release deal thing given the fact that walmart says the price is special. At what stage do they ask you for your SSN? I am at the credit card stage and a little worried to give it to them. If this really doesn't require opening an account with AT&T or getting a cell phone plan then I think it just rocks. Though I still plan to get the new iPod touch and Epic 4g so maybe this is a waste. So tempting all the same though.

On the right hand side underneath the price there are 3 options. the bottom one says "Phone-only price (no plan purchase)" If you don't purchase a plan then why would they require an internet plan, and where in the ordering process do they ask for that?
I just went all the way through the ordering process to the final stage where you agree to the Let's Talk terms and the Place Order button, nowhere on there did it ask me to add a data plan or anything. Then again they needed my phone number to verify me as an AT&T customer and I gave them my VERIZON cell phone number, so if I were to click place order maybe it wouldn't go through, or something.
Just ordered one as well. No contract requirements. If you are currently upgrade eligible, you can get it free.
No tax, no other fees. When it arrives, I simply need to put my current SIM card in and there probably won't be any activation fee either. Sorry, you iPhone 4 owners probably need to go to AT&T corp store and ask for a REAL sim card (vs the mini one in the iPhone 4) in order to use the new phone. Or sometimes, the new phones comes with a new SIM card. But in order to activate that, you will have to pay activation fee.
I fully expect places like Walmart, Best Buy and Amazon offer much better deal than AT&T but that typically only happens a few days after release.
Order placed, if it goes thru that will be awesome.

I just jumped on this offer and was able to pick a no contract option and paid 229 for the phone via my credit card. I did not pick any plans or accessories. It did ask me for the last 4 digits of my social security, my name on the account and the phone number I was going to use it with. "needed it to program the phone to work with the service" or something like that.... Completed the transaction and so far so good... Checked the online status right after and there was a note "customer attention" needed. But no link to what they needed. So I will keep you folks updated...
So for all of you who have completed the transaction, check your order status and post what it is.... I am wondering if someone at walmart/lettalk wireless needs to confirm everything and if there a hicup somewhere they might cancel all of these orders at this price???
Unlike a day ago, they now actually advertised a price. Since they advertised this price they HAVE to give it to us for that price or they can be in legal trouble. I found a pricing error once by Fry's and they had to give me the phone for $100 off even though it was incorrect.
I just checked order status and it says customer attention needed too. Also says it needs it before order can be completed, but it said my order was completed when I placed it. What is walmart doing...
I got the "need customer attention" thing too.. We'll see..
Got the same order status. Not sure what else they needed.
Maybe they have to check AT&T system to verify my account before completing the order.
Ahh, it says I only placed an order, but still, I should be able to say that it is false advertising if they try to change my order or cancel it.
Can we go to Best Buy right now and do price matching?

No they don't. Perhaps you're new to deal-seeking on the internet, but price mistakes pop up all the time, and the retailer can cancel your order with out repercussion. I placed an order for mine as well, but I'm not counting on it going through until I receive the shipping notification.
My order status is the same as everybody elses. So who is going to them up and find out what's going on?
Mine says Customer Attention needed also and letstalk customer service is not open on Sunday. Feeling a little leery....

Just placed my order and I'm seeing the same thing.
At least one of us (a user on androidforum) has an order that is getting ready to ship already. They choose over night shipping, I wonder if that has anything to do with it. I just went for free shipping.

[Q] Buying a used phone on craigslist (Verizon)

I'm meeting someone from craigslist to buy a used Verizon phone and I have a couple of questions. I am going to meet them at a store, but there are no official Verizon stores around, only a Wireless Zone (which is an authorized Verizon retailer I believe). Will they be able to activate the phone on my account and confirm that the ESN is clear? (i.e. am I able to guarantee the phone won't be marked stolen at a later date if it is activated on my account?) Or is this the type of thing that should only be done at a real Verizon store? Any other advice for buying phones on craigslist?

I've been here before. When you see your new phone, yank the battery, take your current phone dial *611, then get to customer service. Tell them you are buying a used phone and you want to make sure the ESN is ok to activate on your account.
They will ask for the ESN of the phone, then they'll give the OK, good or bad. They will tell you if the phone is ok to activate or not, that will be what you need to move on and buy it.
What ever the seller says, could be bull...so MAKE SURE YOU CALL.
Wireless zone MIGHT help but, they are a 3rd party, they might not help at all or charge you something for checking. Calling Verizon directly might be your best bet here. You'll be able to do this all on-line too...
Don't forget to hit thanks if this helped
Thanks David..if I'm not the account holder, will I need any sort of PIN or passcode do you know?

To access your account, the automated system asks for the last 4 of the SS number of the account holder.
Customer service is pretty good over all, so if your dialing in from a Verizon phone, and you get by the logon prompts fine, you should be all set.
Do you have a verizon phone now ? If so, just hit *611 and see if the option to get to customer service is presented to you, if so, it should be all set for you when you go check out your new phone.
Edit: Another thought, if you have been talking voice wise to the seller, as him/her for the ESN number so you can check out the phone, then call CS. When you get to see him/her, you just gota open the back cover and make sure you have the right ESN that he/she gave you.

[Q] People who know about/ work at sprint

I have made a new contact who says he works for sprint in a call center, and for commission on the sale, he will reset my upgrade date and get me a photon at a discount. Obviously I'm interested, but I need to know:
What can I get from him to verify he works from sprint before I hand over my account details. I will not give him any info until he proves he works there.
He said he could give me his Rep ID#, but how will I use that to verify?
Any info is helpful.
Just a piece of advice, usually when it sounds to good to be true. It is . Plus handing out that kind of info to someone you do not know really, really, really well can lead to bad situations. You can verify the information on the Sprint website. But, honestly it's not the best of scenarios. Be really careful, if your going to take that route . Plus keep in mind there's no guarantee he'll keep his end of the deal.
Have fun when you send him your info AND money. Not only will you never see that money again, all your info will be changed, phones reported stolen and insurance claims made for new ones to be sent to wherever.
It still amazes me when people are gullible enough to give out any sort of account information over the internet.

I used to be a trainer for Sprint and I can tell you that resetting or changing a contract date doesn't reset upgrade eligibility. In fact, regular customer care agents can't touch upgrade eligibility. Not even managers in our call center could do that. I wouldn't trust it if I were you.

That is why I wasn't going to give him anything until someone could tell me how to verify he worked there. Newkidd was in IRC and was going to check for me by running the guys REP id#, but before he got back to me he got offline.
Also after talking to the guy more, he didn't say anything that threw a red flag. He didn't ask for my password or anything, just the info sprint asks for when you call CSR. I was also confused about the money. He isn't charging a fee, he gets commission off the sale. So the money would be charged to my sprint bill.
and once again Scotty035ntknow... I am not going to do anything until I KNOW for a FACT he is a real sprint employee. I also know that just because he is a legit Sprint employee, doesn't mean he isn't gonna steal everything out of my acct. I have his rep ID# and if something goes down I can call up sprint give that to them and tell them he did crap to my acct.
unemployment
I'm guessing he won't be employed long term! If he works there at all.
Don't do it.....just don't do it.
yea, the guy never would give up anything more than his "rep ID", which probably was just some made up letters and numbers. So I said nope.

T-Mobile contract sign up?

So I am thinking about starting a contract with T-Mobile because they get decent service where I live and from what I have heard they are cheap. So my question is when I go to set up an account with them will I need to have any cash to sign up? I am broke till payday but really need a phone. If anyone knows I would really appreciate the help. Oh and also I just need 1 line if you have an account with just one line on it could you please tell me what plan you use and what your average bill is. Thanks in advance!
If you sign-up and get a free phone, you will only need a credit card. This way they can charge $1 to it to make certain you're worthy. Of course this is online where you will find the best deals. The stores usually do not have very good deals.
Also I was looking through the Market forum today and found another website http://www.wirefly.com that is seemingly legit to me (I checked my upgrade eligibility and it worked as it should). The deals there are great.
Hope this helps. BTW... T-Mobile has the worst customer care ever, and Asurion, their insurance company, are thieves. Just another FYI.

[Q] Craiglist / In-Person Scams. How to Avoid Them?

Some of you may give me the advice of avoiding Craigslist all together, however as I am a poor college student, there's not much you could say to deter me from risking a little for a cheaper Samsung S3. On Ebay most S3s are 400-550$ while on Craigslist I see quite a few in the 300-400$ range. I understand that deals that are too good to be true are scams, but there are certainly exceptions to the rule. I need your help understanding the tricks of the trade and how to prevent scams. Here are the few that I know and how to prevent them, I ask you as the community to add onto this list:
SCAMS:
Stolen or Unpaid Phone
Agree to meet @ carrier store, ask a CSR to check IMEI and if it's clean to change the phone to your account. Assuming that your partner knows the info to his account, this will ensure that your phone will not be blocked in the future.
Chinese Clone
Download Android System Info check info compare to screenshots found here. Avoid this.
OTHER TIPS
Ask seller to Bring Driver's Licence, & record their name.
Ask seller to bring account information if this phone used to be on the same carrier.
Make a call/ receive a call
Open browser
Check wifi radio
Check GPS
Ensure the touchscreen works in all areas.
Record video to ensure mic, camera works
Ensure the phone shut down and starts up properly
Ask about the warranty*
Test all hardware buttons
Test headset and loudspeaker work
using my daily bump
bumping, any advice?
Any thief worth his or her salt is going to have a good fake ID and no problem lying.
Agreeing to meet at T-Mobile support and have them check it out, tell you the details (if phone is under EIP or attached to another account), and make a record on your account is probably your best bet.

Thanks a lot for the reply. If I am using the Tmobile prepaid 30$/month wallmart plan. Is there any way for them to make a note on my account is there? How do I go about this? I see two possibilities:
1) Phone in question is not paid off yet (purchased for discounted price):
If I go in there and they tell me the phone is attached to someone's account, is it still ever reasonable to go through with the trade? Is it possible to break that link somehow with 100% certainty that someone else's lack of responsibility won't come back and bite you in the arse?
2) Phone in question is paid off (purchased for full price):
no problem here, if I have them check it and it looks ok then done deal right? or can it still be reported stolen later and blacklisted despite me checking in with them?
Thanks a bunch.
Just spoke to a t-mobile CSR. Here's how the process works.
A phone can be blocked for 2 reasons and 2 reasons only:
1. A customer has not paid his monthly account bill on a discounted price phone
2. A customer reports a phone stolen within 30 DAYS.
The solution to avoiding getting scammed via either method is to ask the CSR at the store to add the phone to your account. It doesn't matter what plan you're using, as long as the phone is on your account, you are safe. Have the IMEI ready.
