[Q] So many tablets!! Which one? - General Questions and Answers

At the moment, I have the original Galaxy Tab. I was looking into upgrading, but there are so many choices. Was considering the Galaxy Tab 7.7, Motorola Xoom, Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the Transformer Prime.
Now, generally this would be "duh, just get the Prime!", but I've been reading about all the issues people are having, and that Asus is coming out with a better version later on in the year. So, should I wait or just buy the Prime?
In no particular order I'm looking for
A) Active development community, as I will root and flash any device I buy, its inevitable.
B) Long battery life.
C) GSM capability (when traveling)
D) Expandable memory via card slot
Size isn't really an issue, and even though the 10.1 has a great display, I'll still be stuck with whatever amount of storage space I choose to buy it with. Development on the 7.7 just seems to be starting, and for the 7.0 plus seems very bare (also starting?).
What do you guys think? I'm open to any and all suggestions!

I would go for Galaxy tab 7 (p1000) ... Just because i dont like the 10 one its too big ...
though if you want prime, you will probably get new software version when they release it ...
but i will continue speaking about galaxy tab :
a)i had it all stock, didn't want to mess since it was supposed to be sold.
b)It surely has good battery life.
c)yes
d)yes
so i bet the p6800 is even better, and a golden middle between 7 and 10 inch... i just don't know about the availability of the roms... check in advance that on xda for sure

Does it have a expandable memory though?

the p1000 has it, also the p6800 has it i guess, since its just improved version ... and on site it says so

I think the Transformer prime is your best bet. It's battery life is pretty darn long especially if you buy the keyboard dock as well.

No gsm though right? I suppose I could just use the phone to tether. You think I should wait for the new one coming out in the middle of the year, that supposedly fixes those wifi and gps issues people are having with it?

[Q] Nexus 7 or Samsung Galaxy Tab2 P3110?

Hey XDA!
I wish this month, no later than December 1 (ie 30 November) to buy me a tablet.
The principal went on tablets that are good in terms of quality / price, and I found only two .. which is 7.0 P3110 Samsung Galaxy tab2 and Nexus 7.
For me, a tablet is a portable device that I can play (mostly).
Budget tablets can be inferred from the two mentioned above (about 250 euros).
I took them for quality you can give me. How do I know assume that you know the differences between the two .. now put the question on a specialized website for that! So not only can I say that Nexus 7 has no SD card slot, and Samsung's camera is on back.
I want to make a good choice, both liking much, but I want something that will last in time .. ie I do not have 1-2 years to buy anything just seeing them go to my friend's new phone games, per tablet .. and I do not even support something like this (I say) to have lag!
On Nexus 7 does not believe a experiencing any lag time soon, but do not know what to say about Galaxy tab2.
Therefore I want to know the following from you:
What do you think tablet should I buy?
What say you like it better? What is the best of both screen and you believe not experiencing lag in at least 1-2 years?
Samsung tab2 deserves just because he has slod SD and back room, or go on Nexus 7 because it has quad-core and Tegra 3?
Thanks in advance and excuse my English!
Which tablet??
I would personally go with the Nexus 7 because of stock JB and I just like the design more. I know it lacks things like a SD slot and back camera but I don't take pictures with a tablet anyways. Its totally up to you, but I hear a 32GB model of Nexus7 will be released soon, and its still in a great price point. Im sure you'll be happy with whatever you choose.

I dont' want to make pictures with a tablet, i have an samsung camera
But you don't know when you need them. Possible to have the tablet and you don't have any camera with you..
My question is: while the chipset will last more games market (ie not wake up as my galaxy tab2 not say go GTA 5) and the nexus YES!
Still all to nexus 7 .. but I want a bow and parry from you and ultimately will really test them.
32GB version I do not care, I know you can solve many problems with USB OTG!
Please see the sticky at the top of this section for all phone suggestion questions. Thread closed.

Is it worth it to buy it now?

I have a Galaxy S2 phone and had the Nexus 7 tablet, but had to return it because of the screen lifting problem.
I don't see any other 7-inch tablets with 3G and MicroSD expansion on the horizon, so I want to ask you who have bought the P6800 - would it still be worth it to buy it now?
Thanks!

Both of these are supposed to get official OTA Jelly Bean updates soon, they both have 3G and MicroSD.
Samsung Galaxy Tab S 7 (P3100)
Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 Plus (P6200)
I currently own the 7.7 running CM10 and like it alot, the biggest factor was the extra 0.7" of screen and the 1.4GHz processor.
Also if you want to get a wifi only version of a tablet, as long as it has USB Host support and viable version of Android you can use a 3G dongle with a SIM card...
Nexus 7 vs P6800? They're both fantastic devices but the P6800 is better. Unbelievable screen, twice the battery life, larger viewing area, thinner and lighter, has MicroSD and 3G.
The only downsides to the GT-P6800 are price, the 30-pin proprietary Samsung connector cable, and no smart-cover option. In retrospect I wish I'd bought a Verizon i815 (Certified Pre-Owned is $280 directly from Verizon) instead of the N7.
it is a great little device... i like it so much that i will never get rid of it... the processor maybe getting a little old but it still can handle any game without a hickup... no jellybean update is a kind of a worry though...

Get the p6800 you will love it. I had the nexus 7, I just couldn't look that ugly screen. I installed Paranoid on my p6800 and I don't see any difference in performance between the N7 and the 7.7 , you are going to love every part of the 7.7. Its the best High Quality tablet right now. I can't use any other screen besides super amoled. All the other screens look like poop, even the super IPS. That's my opinion. Once you get used to the blacks of super amoled that's it you are always going to find the other screens crap

I own the nexus 7 and GT 7.7. The screen on the nexus 7 is not as good as the GT but the N7's performance is much better. The micro sd card is nice but once you give the cloud a chance you wont go back to transfering files onto micro sd cards. I like both tablets but I use the GTab more only because of the convenience. I pulled the simcard out of my thunderbolt and placed it in the GTab so ive been using this as my mobile phone with unlimited data and as a result its always on me. I havnt tried cm10 on tab 7.7 and. I wont unless they get data working. I know touchwiz slows things down but enough to boost this device to nexus 7 speed idk. Someone would need to post a vid on youtube for me to believe. If I were to post one with my GTab running stock ICS vs the Nexus 7 with customs and kernals from the best devolpers on xda you would understand why its really no contest.
Do yourself A favor and buy the nexus 7. The Galaxy Tab 7.7 has more potential but thats all it will have. The nexus 7 has so much support you will never wait or wish for anything. It will get everything first and that includes updates direct from google, app support from developers, tegra exclusives, and support from xda members porting there rom/kernal/mods and to be honest there building on the nexus and then there porting these builds to other devices just check out the forums. Over there and you will see the open/closed betas. The nexus 7 will have it all

Galaxy 7.7 rules in screen and that's where it ends. It is a gadget of past with dual core processor. It one thing to love your GT7.7 but to say that dual core processor is better than quad is biased and naive.

I own a Galaxy note since 2011. It's a dual core and does everything i want.
Samsung released it's quad core successor, but I don't see any reason to
upgrade... I own a GT 7.7 since 1 month. It does everything I want, and
it does it without any lag or problem...
And I don't feel like living in the past.
But at least Samsung amongst others doesn't spend millions on marketing
for nothing. On you it works, making you think that you need 16 cores and 20 gig of ram
I am not biased at all. I just bought a Galaxy 7.7 32gb version (from Australia) paying over $550. My reason was the SuperAmoled screen and insane battery life. But I also own a Nexus 7. So being an owner of both, I can tell you that performance-wise Nexus 7 (with quad core) punches GT 7.7.
It really boils down to what you are seeking.

Galaxy Tab or nexus 7

So I'm in the market for a tablet. So my question is, is there any problems with the tab? I like the Galaxy because of the sd card slot. But I also want the nexus because of the dev support and updates

Care to tell me about this week support on updates? We have 3-4 updates since May when the tablet was released, averaging one every month or two. I'd say that's pretty good personally. Maybe you're complaining that there is no Jelly Bean yet, but I'm not sure why since they just started pushing it out to phones, which are a much bigger money maker, in the past two weeks. We also know that the GTab 2 will be getting Jelly Bean as it was on the update list released by Samsung, and there have been leaks for every one of the GTab 2 models so far. You want to compare updates, the Nexus 7 has only had 2 updates since July, so they've gotten updates in the same time frame as this tablet, one every month or two. But yeah, Samsung hasn't been providing any updates...
IMO, the question really comes down to, do you want fixed storage and only access to AOSP ROMs, or do you want expandable storage and AOSP and TouchWiz ROMs? The developer pool may be larger on the Nexus 7, but you only have AOSP ROMs, and the popular ones are all on the Galaxy Tab 2 now anyway, and if you really wanted, porting them isn't all that difficult either. You also have access to TouchWiz ROMs if you get the Galaxy Tab 2, something you won't have on the Nexus 7. The Nexus 7 has fixed storage, with the option for USB OTG if you load a custom kernel, but that is the best you get for expandable storage. The Galaxy Tab 2 has fixed internal, but also supports microSD cards and USB OTG, so you don't need a dongle to expand built in storage.
Gtab has camera and SD slot while nexus doesn't.
Gtab is the way I'd go. I'm happy with mine and wouldn't trade it for an n7.

go for galaxy tab! you can swap external with internal sd, play gameloft games as well..and 2 cameras.. it is also capable of overclocking
I chose the tab 10.1 over the Nexus 7 for the following reasons
Expandavle storage
larger screen
I use my tablet for content creation, would have gone with the note, but my budget wouldn't stretch. I rarely play games, rarely watch videos, by far the ability to create was the deciding factor for me and the Nexus 7 just didn't cut it.

[Q] Galaxy Tab 7.7 or Nexus 7, which would you take?

I have a Galaxy Tab 8.9 (P7300), and I bought a Nexus 7 32gb wifi just to try out and see if I like it.
Well, I love the speed and the pure Android interface of the Nexus, it's definitely better than my P7300. But there are some points that still make me think if the Nexus 7 is "the tablet for me", you know what I mean.
First, there's no GSM calling function. It's not a big deal, I could live without it, but I can't deny it's a plus.
Second, there's no SD slot and USB mass storage mode. The first is compensated with the 32gb internal memory. There's a workaround to the last, a USB OTG cable and an app from Play Store.
Last, and there's no solution to that, is the 7'' screen size. Some magazines here in Brazil are sold in an "iPad format" (1024x768, no zoom in/out), so in a 1280x800 display, some parts of it get really small to read, depending on the screen size. In my P7300, I can read them ok. In my Nexus 7, I can't. I don't know if in a 7.7 display it would get better.
So I'm thinking about buying a P6800, even with its main con, IMO: no Jelly Bean for it.
And you: between P6800 and Nexus 7 32gb, what would you take? What are the pros and cons of the 7.7 compared to the Nexus 7?
7.7
Pros:
Thin
Sdcard
Phone functionality
Better screen
Cons:
Touchwiz
No JB
CyanogenMod stability dependent on galaxy note/s2
Probably more than I can think of. I would get the 7.7 if you don't mind touchwiz or incomplete (for the time being) cyanogenmod.

I just got the 7.7 about 10 days ago and can't be more pleased with it.
I did get the i815 variant but will probably just use wifi.
I can hotspot through my phone if need be....
I decided on the 7.7 because of it's size and specifically its size in portrait mode.
I like browsing in portrait and I can easily type with thumbs with this tab. I did hold a nexus 7 and found it the perfect size for my hands to thumb type. However, this isn't too bad and I can hum right along and let swiftkey fix any errors....
I really don't like landscape when it's the 16:10 or 16:9 ratios.
For my phone, I have the galaxy note and never use it in landscape so I knew the same would happen with a tablet (my first one btw).
The only time I do use it is for video which for me isn't that often.
I don't mind the touchwiz so much when I use nova launcher.
However, I just loaded the CM 10.1 rom and have been please with it so far.
If the 7.7 had come out at the same as the Nexus 7 or vice versa I would still end up getting the 7.7 purely on specs alone, plus the phone option

We had the same problem. I, on the other hand had the iPad3 before i bought this tab 7.7. Was torn between this tab, the note 2 and Nexus 7. My friend has a Nexus 7, and I can't help but tell him it looked so cheap beside the tab 7.7, he couldn't agree more. lol. He is now planning on selling it. I do agree that Nexus 7 seems a little bit faster most of the time, on the homescreen scrolling and the app drawer. But you know what I did? Dumped TouchWiz in favor of Apex Launcher. Everything went as smooth as JB, and the great thing is that it has Tablet Mode too. I tried flashing custom ROMs but I just cant live with the 'phablet' mode of stock JB Android. The nav buttons are too big for my taste and waste of screen estate. Tried PA but was too tedious, buggy and full of reboots. I can just flash the JB Apps anyways.
Galaxy Tab 7.7 pros:
SD Card
Better Display
can call/text
premium build
thinner and lighter
has back camera for quick sharing and Skype (to show the environment, etc.
better front camera
better battery life (with cellular on, my friend's Nex7 has no 3G, I'd expect the 3G version to have even shorter battery life)
software is Tablet mode, not phablet
thinner bezels
better speakers
Nexus 7 pros:
cheaper
a little bit smoother on some tasks
better support from Google and the devs
a little bit narrower
better benchmarks for bragging
Try GO Launcher HD Tablet, at last a proper launcher for tablet :good:
+1 for the above posts.
I have both devices. The 7.7 is my "Go To" device for anything media (movies, Netflix, Hulu+, etc). JB would be nice but ICS perfoms well also.
The N7 is enjoyable as a test bed for trying out ROMs and whatnot.
If the 7.7 weren't afflicted with the Superbrick Bug it would be, hands down, the best tab to be had. Better than anything Apple (or anyone else for that matter) has offered.

Glad to hear that! I flashed ICS (Austria) months ago leaving stock TW and TWRP. Works fine for me so plan on leaving it there unless either an official Samsung fix is released (doubtful) or another device replicates the 7.7 (again, doubtful).
In the meantime, I have a great tab I enjoy! I'll flash the beejesus out of other devices. lol

Try GO launcher HD Tablet, the first launcher for tablet, it makes all the difference, and it is free :good:
I will choose P6800.
I will choose P6800. I already have P6800 ^^;
I use it for ebook, show movie and phone. So external SD, good screen and battery life are important points for me.
Nexus 7 is on good price and it has good OS although I will choose P6800. :good:
Because of some problems after I "manually" updated to ICS (web browsing issues with javascript turned on, see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1958474), I bought a Nexus 7. Had it for less than 24 hours. You just cannot compare the Nexus screen to the 7.7. The Nexus screen looked so small and washed-out compared to the Galaxy. I guess the importance of that depends of what you are doing.
I also failed to see what was so great about the "pure Google" experience on the Nexus tab (I have a Galaxy Nexus phone with JB, so I pretty much knew what that was like anyway). The only thing that was better - to me - about the Nexus tab was the way the e-mail client works with Windows Live / Hotmail. On the Galaxy 7.7 you have to scroll to the bottom and click "load more details" to get a non-text version no matter what settings you use, while the Nexus loaded the full HTML version without that annoying step. Well, also the Nexus probably ran a little snappier, but not so much that using it was a meaningfully better experience.
I had a Nexus 7 and switched to a Galaxy Tab 7.7 mainly for the screen, but I also wanted a back camera. More battery life is a plus. The stock i815 ROM (LP10, but not LP11) isn't all that bad. Tried CM 10.1 but I didn't like the split bars, so my ideal OS would probably be 4.1.2.

Tab 7.7 old and discontinued? Should I buy it?

Thinking of buying the 7.7 but is has no jb support. It it old and discontinued?

Should I just get the Nexus 7 with jb?

but as you can see the support from samsung itself isn't that great, so I would suggest to make an alternative

Personally I have both devices and both provide me with enjoyable experiences. Is the 7.7 EOL? Probably but it's still a very worthwhile device especially viewing mp4 movies and any other visually-rich activities where space is an issue.
If you have the $280 to spare I'd pull the trigger. (You save FAR more than I did when I bought mine many months ago when it first came out!)

Same decision here and I chose the 7.7 after comparing to the Nexus. Even though its old and discontinued it still blows away the nexus IMHO. The screen on the 7.7 is miles better and you have the SD card slot. Also I am running JB 4.2.2 flashed following information from these very forums.

Hope it will give you much pleasure despite the fact that it is a low-end device, opposed to the high-end 7.7
GT 7.7 is better built quality than Nexus 7.
it's supposed to get JB as Samsung Thailand says.
but when this happen, already Android 5.0 will be out, and maybe 7.0 inch tablets with Full HD displays will out also, so if you like software upgrades fast and clean, go to nexus cause Samsung sucks at it, or wait until Full HD tablets with Android 5.0 is out.
it's still a great tablet. such excellent build quality, expandable memory, screen is amazing people comment on it all the time, option to get a pay as you go sim, keep it in there and get data as needed on a month to month basis, still quite fast with ICS. JB would be nice but not 100% needed plus there are some ROM options that provide JB like features.
im flying overseas this summer, right now there is no other tablet i would want with me. i can put multiple movies on here and watch them, and enjoy wifi wherever, and if really needed get wireless data also. what else could you ask for? well a nexus device with this kind of build quality, expandable memory and this screen. but that is not happening yet.
Dude ... the screen is really enough reason to buy that awesome device .. the only tab with Super AMOLED Plus screen !
and btw .. Samsung announced that it's going to have Jelly Bean update in Q2 i guess
