Is it worth it to buy it now? - Galaxy Tab 7.7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Galaxy S2 phone and had the Nexus 7 tablet, but had to return it because of the screen lifting problem.
I don't see any other 7-inch tablets with 3G and MicroSD expansion on the horizon, so I want to ask you who have bought the P6800 - would it still be worth it to buy it now?
Thanks!

Both of these are supposed to get official OTA Jelly Bean updates soon, they both have 3G and MicroSD.
Samsung Galaxy Tab S 7 (P3100)
Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 Plus (P6200)
I currently own the 7.7 running CM10 and like it alot, the biggest factor was the extra 0.7" of screen and the 1.4GHz processor.
Also if you want to get a wifi only version of a tablet, as long as it has USB Host support and viable version of Android you can use a 3G dongle with a SIM card...

Nexus 7 vs P6800? They're both fantastic devices but the P6800 is better. Unbelievable screen, twice the battery life, larger viewing area, thinner and lighter, has MicroSD and 3G.
The only downsides to the GT-P6800 are price, the 30-pin proprietary Samsung connector cable, and no smart-cover option. In retrospect I wish I'd bought a Verizon i815 (Certified Pre-Owned is $280 directly from Verizon) instead of the N7.

it is a great little device... i like it so much that i will never get rid of it... the processor maybe getting a little old but it still can handle any game without a hickup... no jellybean update is a kind of a worry though...

Get the p6800 you will love it. I had the nexus 7, I just couldn't look that ugly screen. I installed Paranoid on my p6800 and I don't see any difference in performance between the N7 and the 7.7 , you are going to love every part of the 7.7. Its the best High Quality tablet right now. I can't use any other screen besides super amoled. All the other screens look like poop, even the super IPS. That's my opinion. Once you get used to the blacks of super amoled that's it you are always going to find the other screens crap

I own the nexus 7 and GT 7.7. The screen on the nexus 7 is not as good as the GT but the N7's performance is much better. The micro sd card is nice but once you give the cloud a chance you wont go back to transfering files onto micro sd cards. I like both tablets but I use the GTab more only because of the convenience. I pulled the simcard out of my thunderbolt and placed it in the GTab so ive been using this as my mobile phone with unlimited data and as a result its always on me. I havnt tried cm10 on tab 7.7 and. I wont unless they get data working. I know touchwiz slows things down but enough to boost this device to nexus 7 speed idk. Someone would need to post a vid on youtube for me to believe. If I were to post one with my GTab running stock ICS vs the Nexus 7 with customs and kernals from the best devolpers on xda you would understand why its really no contest.
Do yourself A favor and buy the nexus 7. The Galaxy Tab 7.7 has more potential but thats all it will have. The nexus 7 has so much support you will never wait or wish for anything. It will get everything first and that includes updates direct from google, app support from developers, tegra exclusives, and support from xda members porting there rom/kernal/mods and to be honest there building on the nexus and then there porting these builds to other devices just check out the forums. Over there and you will see the open/closed betas. The nexus 7 will have it all

Galaxy 7.7 rules in screen and that's where it ends. It is a gadget of past with dual core processor. It one thing to love your GT7.7 but to say that dual core processor is better than quad is biased and naive.

I own a Galaxy note since 2011. It's a dual core and does everything i want.
Samsung released it's quad core successor, but I don't see any reason to
upgrade... I own a GT 7.7 since 1 month. It does everything I want, and
it does it without any lag or problem...
And I don't feel like living in the past.
But at least Samsung amongst others doesn't spend millions on marketing
for nothing. On you it works, making you think that you need 16 cores and 20 gig of ram

I am not biased at all. I just bought a Galaxy 7.7 32gb version (from Australia) paying over $550. My reason was the SuperAmoled screen and insane battery life. But I also own a Nexus 7. So being an owner of both, I can tell you that performance-wise Nexus 7 (with quad core) punches GT 7.7.
It really boils down to what you are seeking.

Galaxy Tab or nexus 7

So I'm in the market for a tablet. So my question is, is there any problems with the tab? I like the Galaxy because of the sd card slot. But I also want the nexus because of the dev support and updates

Care to tell me about this week support on updates? We have 3-4 updates since May when the tablet was released, averaging one every month or two. I'd say that's pretty good personally. Maybe you're complaining that there is no Jelly Bean yet, but I'm not sure why since they just started pushing it out to phones, which are a much bigger money maker, in the past two weeks. We also know that the GTab 2 will be getting Jelly Bean as it was on the update list released by Samsung, and there have been leaks for every one of the GTab 2 models so far. You want to compare updates, the Nexus 7 has only had 2 updates since July, so they've gotten updates in the same time frame as this tablet, one every month or two. But yeah, Samsung hasn't been providing any updates...
IMO, the question really comes down to, do you want fixed storage and only access to AOSP ROMs, or do you want expandable storage and AOSP and TouchWiz ROMs? The developer pool may be larger on the Nexus 7, but you only have AOSP ROMs, and the popular ones are all on the Galaxy Tab 2 now anyway, and if you really wanted, porting them isn't all that difficult either. You also have access to TouchWiz ROMs if you get the Galaxy Tab 2, something you won't have on the Nexus 7. The Nexus 7 has fixed storage, with the option for USB OTG if you load a custom kernel, but that is the best you get for expandable storage. The Galaxy Tab 2 has fixed internal, but also supports microSD cards and USB OTG, so you don't need a dongle to expand built in storage.
Gtab has camera and SD slot while nexus doesn't.
Gtab is the way I'd go. I'm happy with mine and wouldn't trade it for an n7.

go for galaxy tab! you can swap external with internal sd, play gameloft games as well..and 2 cameras.. it is also capable of overclocking
I chose the tab 10.1 over the Nexus 7 for the following reasons
Expandavle storage
larger screen
I use my tablet for content creation, would have gone with the note, but my budget wouldn't stretch. I rarely play games, rarely watch videos, by far the ability to create was the deciding factor for me and the Nexus 7 just didn't cut it.

[Q] looking to buy...some questions

hey guys.
my wife and I are big Samsung Fans. we've got Samsung Smart LED 3D TV, Samsung Blu-ray player, Samsung sound bar, both of us have Galaxy S3s.
We had the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 but opted for selling it a while back. Now my wife has hinted at wanting a tablet again, and I want the latest and greatest, and this time a 10.1 since our phones are 4.8" and it doesn't make sense to get a tablet with only a couple inches more.
is this the latest iteration of the Note tablets? I thought it would be based on the Note 2?
http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/galaxy-tab/GT-N8013ZWYXAR
looking at this, it's got a lower resolution than my phone, very outdated software (i've been on 4.1.1 for almost 2 months!) and hardly seems to have the upgrade in technology I was expecting.
or am I looking at the wrong thing?
if you can steer me in the right direction, that would be great. we want the latest and newest Samsung tablet...this seems to be it, but it also seems to be a little disappointing in the specs.
thanks!
Well, the display does have a lower resolution, but for me it is fine and acceptable.
For the firmware:
Mine was sold with JB 4.1.1

Latest, yes, all current samsung high end devices use an almost identical chipset, sgs2, sgs3, note, note2, note 10.1 etc.

Screen is fine mate, perfectly good for a screen of this this size, more than good i think, anything else is just a waste of pixels and cpu processing imho
if you can steer me in the right direction, that would be great. we want the latest and newest Samsung tablet...this seems to be it, but it also seems to be a little disappointing in the specs.
This is the latest and best you'll get from samsung, there may be more to come in the not too distant future but this is arguable the best on the market right not due to the added Spen.
I would like to know why my note 2 and note 10.1 dont have same spen features? Why does the 10.1 not have the hover preview and some other things the note 2 has? I just bought my 10.1 and am a little confused. But over all i think tablet is awesome i would recommend it. Thanks

If you don't care about the spen (Which is fantastic, if you ask me..), you might want to look at the Nexus 10.

In 4.1.1 there's a setting called "Airview" which does exactly what you're describing.
All those features are part of JB, I bet you still are ICS and hence you do not have these features as an when you get the JB upgrade you will get all those feature.
These more of OS dependent features I guess and hence you do not have it in ICS.
Note is one the best tablets around the screen resolutions looks bad on paper but it is one of the best displays around OLED are good but they have their own draw backs like the tint they give you even the Nexus 10 display is not the best.
I would suggest considering the options you have Note is one of the best, I have not used a nexus 10 so I cannot comment on it

Thanks for the responses. I will look at the Nexus 10, though we are partial to Samsung for its ease of integration into everything else we have.
In response to the comments about the resolution of the screen, I want better. I don't think it makes sense to have a lower resolution on a 10.1" device than what I have on my 4.8" phone. The new iPad has much higher resolution And I would have expected better from Samsung.

And you actually got more from Samsung - it has an inbuilt Wacom digitiser that can accurately sens where the s-pen is. Accurately enough that you can write on it, and it will read (and convert) your writing to text.
The screen res is fine, I generally find that the limiting ability is my eyes not the screen
It is due to the wacom digitizer that the screen res is lower... Wacom don't do Hi-res screens.... However, I watch movies on this, browse the web and do work on it. Screen is fine.
I think the "bigger is better" attitude came about with Apple not being able to compete with most things so brought out their retina screen.... The human eye can't detect this many pixels so it's useless to have a 10 inch screen with off the chart resolution....
If you want an all around tablet that does everything and doesn't disappoint then go with the Note 10.1... Otherwise you are looking at other tablets that aren't Samsung... They may have awesome screen resolution but it takes more than 1 thing to make a brilliant tablet....
Trust me, I have had the Nexus 7, the Nexus 10, the Kindle Fire, and now the note 10.1 and the note is by far the best tablet I have owned. The screen should be 1 of the least important factors when choosing a tablet in my opinion, especially when they are all hi def to begin with. If you want a tablet that is best all around, especially for product tivity and getting things done, the note is so far above the competition it's not even funny. I have installed jelly bean on my note and it vastly improved the existing capabilities of the note. It should be out for the US devices within the next month or so. It is well worth the wait, it is the best update I have ever received on an Android device before.
Regarding the Nexus 10, you will be impressed by it screen for the first week or so, then you will realize that it can't do anything your phone can't do, and you will not use it as much. The note is amazing because it can do so many more things than any phone or tablet on the market. You really have to own it to understand how great it is.

bought her the white 16GB Wi-Fi model (GT-N8013?).
now to find out how to root and update it to JB. it came with ICS 4.0.4 and software update shows no updates available.
with time I can figure it out (have rooted and modded every device we've had, including our current SGS3s) but if you can give me a link to the best rooting method (the sticky seems outdated?) and the latest/most stable JB-based rom that would be greatly appreciated.
I had my doubts about getting the note 10.1 because of all the reasons stated in the first post of this thread. I am a note 2 owner so i wasnt keen on getting a tablet with lower specs than my phone but as far as android tablets go at the moment this is top of the range. Its due a jellybean update very soon and is quick on ics anyway.
Multiview is awesome
The Spen is handy and very fun with photoshop touch
Front facing stereo speakers are nice
The battery life is good
Expandable sd card slot is a bonus (and not standard on all tablets)
I do notice the screen pixels on the note 10.1 slightly compared to my note 2 but its still a clear crisp HD display. (And the higher res the screen the more of a drain it can be on resourses).
There is also a 3g note 10.1 which u can actually make calls and text with.
2GB of ram.
Get the note 10.1 in the same colour as your s3 the phone and tablet look great as a set
Overall the note 10.1 is one of if not the highest spec android tablet on the market right now and for me it also offers a few things other tablets cant.
My honest dislikes are the damn 30pin connector and no micro usb. Yes i have an otg adapter but i find the 30 pin connector to have no benefits over the micro usb and just a pain. Personal niggle.
Also its a very slippery device thats a terrible fingerprint magnet but i wouldnt swap it for any other tablet on the market and i spent weeks watching youtube reviews on them all before i bought the note 10.1.
I used to own an ipad 3 i prefer my note 10.1 but im an android fan
So yeah id recomend it

Hi Max-Pain,
JB 4.1.2 is coming along officially, www.sammobile.com has just leaked some semi-official versions (Asia and Europe) already bug-free and very smooth.
Don't forget the S-Pen feature can make you "drop" your inkpen once and for all........ love it! It may take a long while that MS tablet can boast such a feature - WP8 can't hold a candle to Android for the time being........ if I could take a strong side, I'd say Android is the best ever for touchscreen, forget Apple and MS........ somebody could pick on me for this, who cares........ Enjoy
thanks for the continued feedback guys...but I think you missed my post above where I said I already bought it.
and i'm already rooted and on jelly bean

This or Nexus 7?

Hi. I'm in the market for a tablet. All the reviews i read say that the Nexus 7 is a better tablet though I'm still worried about not having expandable storage or HDMI out. I'm curious about what your thoughts are. It would be nice to hear opinions from people who have this tablet. In hindsight do any of you wish you had the Nexus 7?

This question again...:sly:
Buddy which tab to buy completely depends on your needs.
So first tell what will you do with your device.
And yes every one want a nexus device...
HDMI out also does not work on galaxy tab 2 7". So you can remove that from the list =p
The only thing that is better on the galaxy is the expandable storage, and that's it. Nexus has a better CPU and newer stock android without needing to mess around. The only kind of trouble I heard about was that in some models the screen was a bit washed out and had some build problems.
I own a 3113 model but I would rather had gotten a Nexus, I just did not because it was out of stock.. I regret this, even though the galaxy still is is a good tab, the Nexus simply is better.

Personally I have both devices and both provide me with enjoyable experiences. Is the 7.7 EOL? Probably but it's still a very worthwhile device especially viewing mp4 movies and any other visually-rich activities where space is an issue.
If you have the $280 to spare I'd pull the trigger. (You save FAR more than I did when I bought mine many months ago when it first came out!)

Same decision here and I chose the 7.7 after comparing to the Nexus. Even though its old and discontinued it still blows away the nexus IMHO. The screen on the 7.7 is miles better and you have the SD card slot. Also I am running JB 4.2.2 flashed following information from these very forums.

Hope it will give you much pleasure despite the fact that it is a low-end device, opposed to the high-end 7.7
GT 7.7 is better built quality than Nexus 7.
it's supposed to get JB as Samsung Thailand says.
but when this happen, already Android 5.0 will be out, and maybe 7.0 inch tablets with Full HD displays will out also, so if you like software upgrades fast and clean, go to nexus cause Samsung sucks at it, or wait until Full HD tablets with Android 5.0 is out.
it's still a great tablet. such excellent build quality, expandable memory, screen is amazing people comment on it all the time, option to get a pay as you go sim, keep it in there and get data as needed on a month to month basis, still quite fast with ICS. JB would be nice but not 100% needed plus there are some ROM options that provide JB like features.
im flying overseas this summer, right now there is no other tablet i would want with me. i can put multiple movies on here and watch them, and enjoy wifi wherever, and if really needed get wireless data also. what else could you ask for? well a nexus device with this kind of build quality, expandable memory and this screen. but that is not happening yet.
Dude ... the screen is really enough reason to buy that awesome device .. the only tab with Super AMOLED Plus screen !
and btw .. Samsung announced that it's going to have Jelly Bean update in Q2 i guess

Next Tablet

So I recently had and Acer Iconia A100 die and need to replace it. Due to budget constraints I'm choosing between the GT2 and the Nexus 7.
I'm familiar with the spec differences but I can't pull the trigger on one or the other. Any GT2 users want to convince me? Let me know your thoughts... positive and negative...
unless you want a camera,I would choose the n7
I have no gripes about the gt2 but the screen is a lesser resolution and the n7 will probably have a longer life for android updates....
in the tabs defense the gt2 does seem to be built a Lil better, the n7 has that pesky screen lift problem and just feels flimsy

Thank you, very helpful and with specific reasons.

Definitely get a hard case for it
For best peformance = Nexus 7
For Gaming = Nexus 7
For Multimedia features = Galaxy Tab 2
For Android updates = Nexus 7
For a better construction body and physical resistance = Galaxy Tab 2
For Photos = Galaxy Tab 2
In my option, you should buy a Nexus 7... I only buy GTab 2 bcoz Nexus 7 isn't avaiable in Brazil, and I don't have any familiars in US...
I have both Nexus 7 and Tab2.... Bought Nexus 7 last year when I was in US and only WIFI version was launched. Have been using it since 8 months now but only issue that I faced with it was that I could not connect to internet as no 3g was available. Hence recently I purchased Tab2 for my self and gifted the nexus to my kiddo...
My two cents...
Nexus 7 3G is the best tab to own. Very good in gaming and multimedia features too. Love the Android updates and have been using 4.2.2 since last 2 months. Battery lift of my wifi N7 is way better than the Tab 2 with 3G. One biggest grouse - no expandable memory of N7, my 16gig get over soon when I download movies to watch on it.
Only reason I bought Tab2 is that N7 with 3G was not available at the time I purchased the Tab here in India. Though if I was out in market at this point, I willl certainly pick the N7 3G version.
Thanks for all the replies, I have to say I expected folks in the N7 forum to recommend the N7 but didn't expect to see such support for it from GT2 users. I'm not worried about the lack of an SD card since I don't ever take much media with me, mostly docs and pdf's and with 16GB internal I think I will be fine (never had a problem with the 8GB on my Acer except for the GPS writing extra files issue). I do have a fear that I will miss the rear camera but I think the performance and Android support for the Nexus is winning me over...
Thanks again
Nexus 7 in everyway.
Only reason I have a Gtab2 is because I am 13 and have controlling parents.

As long as you're extra careful go for the N7, GPS grabs a speedy fix too usually under 5 seconds indoor
I do like the hdmi capabilities in my Samsung tab (7.0+). Has that been figured out for the Nexus or is it a permanent no-go?
