Please comment. Do you have this issue? Help troubleshooting. - Motorola Triumph

Ok we all know that this phone is far from perfect and when we got the first MT off of Craigslist in kinda rough shape I assumed previous abuse to be the cause of the issue. However after bugging VM for a week we got a new replacment. The issue was instantly there on the brand new phone.
Let's see if I explain. Our phone has no back cover and I'm thinking there lies the problem but want people to test the theroy. Problem presents itself when taking pictures no matter camera setting. You are able to get several snaps in a row at times only two. Then when it happens, right as the shutter closes it reboots. I'm talking instantly at the MOTO splash. Then the reboot takes 6-7 minutes at the boot animation if you let it start back up by itself. If at the reboot I pull battery and replace/reboot the device it will boot fast like normal 1-2 mins. The phone seems to have electrical contact points that would be in contact with the back cover (ground). However searching and searching on Google and I find many camera issues present, but not a single reference to this. That's why I'm curious if people can please remove your back covers and snap some pics at random and see if anyone can repeat the problem. If its the back cover being missing that's causing it I will just get a new one and be done chasing logcats and digging trying to fix it. I have never had a back cover but with lack of documentation of others with this problem I'm leaning to that being the problem.
So please pop the cover off and snap some pics give it a chance it happens sometimes on the 1st pic or the tenth. It's random so give it a minute.
I wanna get it fixed cause its the wifes phone. She's a photo taking crazy lady who get quite mad about needing to reboot between snapshots.
Thanks for anyone's input in advance.

Is your phone rooted ? & on a custom rom ? My phone runs CM7 as does my wife's Triumph & she is a photo crazy lady too, she's never complained to me about this issue. Our phones are on Whyzor's 2012-1-26 build as all seems well, but i'll snap off some photo's to be sure & will post the results.

My theory is that's its cause I bought the phone used minus the back cover and upon removing the case to see the back of the phone I see connections that look like they would connect if the cover where there.
I used to think it was something with the one phone so we wiggled our way around with VM and got them to finally send a brand new replacement with no back of course. Your supposed to keep the old one. I never had it. So since the new phone had the same "camera shutter causes reboot" and i can't find another case from any other corner of the net. And I looked. I really looked. I am only left with the absence of the back cover. So I want to see if camera usage with the battery cover of will cause the issue on other MT devices.
The problem happened on miui cm7 and stock. The new phones fresh out of the box but I rooted it by symlinking the sudo files to su and now I don't even need superuser I just have root plain and simple. So its not software as far as I can tell. I'm lost if someone can't repeat the issue with there battery cover off.

I added a picture. Does anyone maybe smarter know what the little metal connections on the back here are. Seems there are five of them. Three along the left side two on the right

Well I have taken like 20 pics just now with the back off and no reboots. Some people have claimed that it's grounding and their touchscreen doesn't work properly with it off. I can take off my cover and use everything on the phone properly so I don't know if its actually grounding or not... I'm gonna be taking my phone apart in the next few days so I can look more into it then.

I'm just at a loss then it makes no sense to have two phones one old rooted rom flashed device and a new stock rooted device and have the same issue that I can't find anyone that has mentioned it. I looked at over 250+ forum posts on probaly 6 sites and can't find a single similar instance I can get a logcat for the reboots on both devices here in a few and see if someone can spot the problem in the logs. Gimme a few hours I'm away from a pc. But I gotta send the phone back within 12 days I'm determined to figure it out. Any advice where to begin looking?

It sounds like you may have just gotten 2 phones that have some sort of grounding issues. I mean there's no way to know for sure, but it could be possible that you got 2 phones that have issues. Another thing is you might be able to ask VM if they can send you a battery cover and see if that actually fixes the problem.

I've never even seen the battery covers are they conductive? Plastic or metal at those points? Never had the pleasure of actually having one. I'll post some logcats to pastebin. I'm gonna reflash both phones to factory settings and unroot. Revert to stock recovery, and off fresh boots do the exact same steps to cause a reboot while I got a logcat running. Hopefully the same errors are noticable on both devices and can find a point to start at.

Well yes the back actually does have metal contacts at those points. I don't know if they are actually used for grounding. Another possibility is its used for RF shielding, but that shouldn't effect things like the camera. Yea see what the logcats find.
Edit: I've attached an image of what the battery cover looks like.

Well I'm on my way to go sit down flash to stock and run some logcats so i can see if anything pops up. I'll try to make a video to so you can see what its doing for yourself. I'll record it and upload it to YouTube and link it here.

Ok. I have to go to work soon though so I might not be able to take a look for a few hours.

well i've snaped off 5 to 7 photo's in a row & can't seem to find this issue that you speak of ?

I'm still heading to the house to try to duplicate it with a logcat running. Will post back soon.

Nope...
I haven't ever had this problem. I took the back off, tried it, put the TPU case back on without the cover, no problems. I do have a problem with the camera when I try to use another app to take pictures (e.g. Evernote, Facebook). The camera tries to focus, it freezes for about 15 seconds then FC's

[Q] Need help with BRICK will donate for solution

I apologize for starting a new thread for this but I'm dying here! I have been reading all the bricked captivate tales of woe for 2 days straight and I have tried all the button combinations till my fingers feel like they are going to bleed. If somebody can help me with this mess I would gladly donate to the beer fund for their trouble.
This is my second go round with paperweight style captivate but I'm lost now. The first time I was visited by the phone-!-computer image but I had no problem getting it into download mode by removing battery, sim, and external sd then replacing battery holding down both volume buttons down (no power button) and inserting usb cable(odin one click was already running on my pc). I flashed back to stock twice with this method and no issues. The first time was to load cognition and the second time was after messing with some mods my phone started lagging horribly bad.
I guess I got a little cocky this last go round and was messing around with ninja morph(no issues there) then I loaded a market app called Galaxy S Tweaker. I made a few tweaks with the app and went to reboot, subsequently my phone will now get stuck on the white ATT boot screen.
As previously stated I have tried all variations of button combinations to no avail. The only 2 screens I see are the battery charging screen and this dreadful white AT&T screen.
Is there anything I can do to get my computer to recognize my phone and/or get into download mode.
Please and Thank You!!
Have you tried adb commands? Such as 'adb reboot download'

I am having issues trying adb. I have everything installed but I think I made an error when updating my path and overwrote the existing text so that the only thing in the path is the location of adb. I get an error every time I try to run it

What you did originally should work again, keep trying, if you had usb debugging enabled try the adb reboot download method. What error is adb giving you anyway?
uninstall the sdk completely. Reinstall it into a folder and do not move anything out of the folder. I keep mine in C:/Users\[user name]\sdk.
Hey there, im pretty new to Android myself and had a very similar issue :S
It seems like you have lost your three button combo, which was exactly what happened to my poor Captivate, the "USB jig" was the only method I found that could put my phone in to download mode, if you search the forums there is a pretty decent walk through on how to do it!
Basically, as long as you have some skill with a soldering iron and a micro USB cable to cut up you can do it pretty quickly. I bought the resistors from a local computer store (you need 301k resistance) and used a scalpel to cut the plastic from the end of the cable, then soldered the resistors to the 4th and 5th pins in series. Once you have done that, plug the cable in to your computer and fire up Odin, the connect your Cappy and presto, download mode!
Honestly when I saw the instructions to build the jig I was skeptical, but since I exhausted every other option first (and had already voided my warranty obviously) I decided to give it a shot and it worked like a charm!
Give it a try and let us know how it goes!

should I remove it from the environmental variables path first and then replace it? do I need to remove it from eclipse as well before I reinstall it?
ADB keeps telling me device not found
Try a different usb port, preferably ones at the back of the motherboard.

I have done that, initially I had to move to the back to get it to work with odin
Edit: Can anyone link me to the solder jig how to? I found the solder-less i-go thread but wanted to look at both before I head off to radio shack and potentially the liquor store depending on how this goes..... going back to my BlackBerry sounds about as appetizing as a warm bath and razor blades. I've had my Captivate for 2 weeks and I'm already spoiled on Android goodness
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=872476
This is the solder-less method, however the only difference is that in the above thread, he didn't use solder to connect the resistors, it should work exactly the same! Otherwise you can simply solder the resistors in series to the exact same spots and you are good to go
Ok well I am off to radio shack to test my luck with this. will report back with the results...... wife has already informed me there is no way in hell I am buying another one so pray for me lol
Rofl well in that case my prayers are with you! If you need any help with it feel free to PM me.
ugh I have to go back to radio shack.... one of the wires broke off while stripping it, I tried touching the resistors to it anyway but it's not working so I am going to give it another shot. If that doesn't work I ordered one from norcal einstein..... this sucks!

[Q] Any fixes for dead pixels/broken LCD?

Ok, so i just managed to drop my phone, not that high, no cosmetic damage at all, after a few hours, low and behold, dead pixels or broken LCD not sure which or both, and it's spreadiing like wildfire.. so frustrating!!
What's a good screenshot app? Tried 2 apps from the market, kept giving me balnk screens.. I've also tried JScreenfix, pixel fixer, to no avail.. Guess i'm gonna have to live with this until I decide to get a new phone, coz im sure having the LCD replaced will cost more than half of the phone's price so why bother.. *sigh
Dont tell Motorola u dropped it and if it was before a year, they fix it for free. At least they did mine.
Download shootme from market. Works for me

Yeah still has warranty until 9/4 although i lost the receipt, but the motorola websitre says it is still under warranty. I'm now trying to find a Motorola service center to get it repaired.. for free coz im not paying.. LOL! I'll post pics of my screen so you may check if it's anything like what happened to your XT720. Thanks!
@spectacle
Will try that one, if it works, i'll post pics of my screen. Thanks!
**edit: Ok so shootme indeed works, but doesn't capture the issue on the screen, gives me perfect screens as they should be.. LOL! Maybe because it's taking a snapshot of the actual display not the external display which i see with the eye? *sigh!
I had to send mine off to Texas to be fixed. I had to pay about $8 US to ship it to them they paid for shipping back and it took about a week and a half. It was the longest week and half ever too. I started having withdrawals. Lol all I had to play with was my android virtual machine. it sure beat buying a new phone.
Dead pixels is a hardware problem my friend. Taking a screenshot probably won't work. Trying using a camera and take a photo of your screen

Don't worry about the receipt or the warranty card (if you have it bring it along) but they won't ask for it! it takes a week max to fix it! =) also if you are on dexters FroYo be sure to flash to a stock ROM and they will wipe your data so back up first. Moreover if your warranty ends soon they will give you 90 days additional warranty from the day they fix it!

[Q] ICS Soft brick. I need an adult. :(

So I'm kind of stuck. I was on the ICS OTA update (stupid move, I know) and I attempted to flash to CM10 (probably an equally stupid move), and the flash proceeded for awhile, but ended up failing. So now I can't access bootstrap, and I'm essentially stuck in a soft brick. In Fastboot flash mode I can't get it to connect via USB, so there's no real hope of FXZing to anything as far as I know.
Do I just call it quits, or is there something I can do? :| I need an adult.
Kay, a little more info is required.
You're on the official OTA? If so, you're stuck mate. There are a couple of semi writing ways to get out of this, you just gotta search and read.
This is why we recommend against the ota update man.

Yeah, I OTA'ed to the official without thinking, before I checked the forums. Wasn't even thinking about the fact that there might not be an fxz.
I've been reading up and researching for a couple hours, but I still can't find a way to get it to connect via USB in fastboot. :| Have you come across anything that might actually help? Realistically I think it's still under warranty, and we have an AT&T wireless device help center thing here that does same day warranty exchanges, so I think I'm probably just going to go there tomorrow and tell them my phone died during the OTA update and now it won't turn on all the way. Does that sound believable at all? haha They're usually pretty lenient anyway, I got a warranty replacement there on my Atrix 1 and they gave me a bad battery, and when I came back in do get a replacement the guy noticed I was running CM7, and said something jokingly about how "yeah the battery was bad, but the ****ty CM7 port probably didn't help much". lol

I don't know why it wouldn't be working in fastboot. try reinstalling drivers if you are on windows.
If you can get an exchange do it, just play dumb, and you'll be fine. I hardbricked when the first ICS hell hit (kind of on purpose, I had a problem that they would not replace for) testing some stuff for how to get back, and I brought it in and just acted sad and said I took it off the charger and it wouldn't turn on. I had a new one in a week.
P.S. I have done much stupider things, so don't worry, you are far from alone.
Thats acually the same thing I said when I flashed the razr developer edition of mbmloader. Just say that the OTA failed and trust me in order to get a new phone
Cheers and good luck!!!

Do I just call it quits, or is there something I can do? :| I need an adult.

I stupidly did the same thing as the OP :/. I need to get a replacement and my device is under warranty. How do i proceed? When booting up the device says "Cyanogenmod", so I don't really want to get caught with that! Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Attempt at your own risk:
Take out the phone's battery, and find a couple of lead wires with small alligator clips on both ends. Then, attach the negative black lead wire to a 12v lantern battery (you can find these just about anywhere) and to the negative terminal of the phone. Then attach the positive red lead wire to the battery, and then just touch the end of the positive lead wire to your phone's positive terminal - only takes a second. This will fry the motherboard completely, and it will never turn on. Contact Motorola via their website and open a warranty exchange ticket. They'll send you an email with a shipping label to print, affix to your shipping box, and just drop it off to any FedEx pickup location. I got mine back in less than a week.

Also if you have a car battery charger, set it at a 2AMP charge and connect it the same way ^^, for a min or 2 and it will all be over... it does not matter what phone you have that will do the job just fine. If you send a phone that only needs 2 volts to charge, a 14 volt 2 amp signal, it will be dead. Just make sure the battery is not in the phone when you do this, that will be VERY bad.
I am just saying, and do this very carefully, this can hurt you, if not done correctly.
I wasn't daring enough to follow those steps, so I decided to be creative and use this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1935485
Essentially, I did everything but flash the OTA. It didn't fix my issue completely, but it did stop my phone from showing the CyanogenMod logo. I then called AT&T and asked for a replacement I told them that the OTA stopped my phone from booting. They gave me free priority shipping and it arrived this morning (ordered yesterday afternoon).

Phone power downs randomly, then...

So i've recently come back again with an issue i had before with my S2 where i had an issue of it randomly shutting off then vibrate. Back then i just restock to ATT and made sure the power button wasn't stuck. It wasn't happening for a while until just yesterday. [ I did go back to Jellybean after the problem stopped happening as well]
Now currently i've restock back to ATT 2.3 /
So now im almost positive it isn't my battery because once that problem started happening [still stocked] again. Also it would randomly shut off when im and listening to music with headphones and emit a high freq. pitch and the LED camera was flashing when it vibrated as well. Its also very hard to get it back to recovery/download mode but i can and also just starting it up again with the power button and i have to also take out the battery as well .
So so far i've gone back ATT with Odin, and was wondering if someone could help me.
You restored to stock 2.3? Gingerbread? I've only experienced this when uninstalling apps on jellybean, particularly apps with root access. Will do a hot boot. Likely because the system is not mounting or unmounting properly during process. I assume. Never once have I experienced this on any ICS Rom. Try Sky ICS or Embryo 5.x.x Rom. They're both pretty stable.

Can you get me a copy of the info tag under the battery please? There was a series (which I had 3 of) that had the same hardware issue that you are experiencing. I'm not near my SR of the series, but will look when I get home and post. It is however an issue that AT&T and Samsung are aware of. AT&T gave me a GS III due to the issue.

Well that looks like it was from a different batch. Same factory but different batch. Most likely you have the same hardware issue I had. My recommendation is to contact AT&T via PHONE, not the international line. You don't want warranty dept. Tell them that you are on a Sky Rocket, and that this is your "x" one that was under warranty, and that all "x" of them have failed under the same known hardware issue. The options you will have are either get a replacement, file under any extended warranty you purchased, OR you can tell them that it is unacceptable, and you would like a different device. They cannot offer you a note, note 2 or any of the iphones. I opted for the S III, and have been happy ever since.
Just so you know it is not the best idea to post you're IMEI publicly.

man now i cant even remove it from the other users qoute, but i think i found out it is the powerbutton because when i eventual am able to boot up my phone, if i press the powerbutton to wake up it , it then a few seconds later will shut down randomly and start vibrating with either the flash or no flash at all [camera LED] also it seems like my phone was wet and the power button is not stuck because i opened up the entire phone and its still clickable with no problems.

Done did, well get a dental pick (not a tooth pick) and gently clean around the edges of the power button. When you do get it powered back up, make a backup to your sd card, JUST IN CASE you need to send it back to sammy.
I dunno if I'm having something similar happen. My phone was working completely normally (CM 10). Working this AM ok, I pull up an email, and then it shuts off, tries rebooting, the Samsung logo comes up, I get a brief flash on the screen (sometimes just a single line that varies in position on the screen) and then it keeps vibrating. Never had this happen before....and of course it happens as I am at the airport without my laptop to try and put it into download mode...I can't even get it into recovery. Ugh!
Any thoughts?

sticky power button, 1stop sticky has a few links for that problem
Or take the phone apart and clean it. Its not hard like 6 00 screws and a box cutter then its really easy to clean.

Thx. I did take it apart. Luckily I had a micro screwdriver for glasses with me, since I am out of town. Took the board off, blew into it, pressed the button a bunch, etc. Seems to be working now.
Sounds like this is not an uncommon problem though. Makes me wonder about the quality of the parts... This phone is just over a year old, and has always had a case on it (though I do keep it in a pocket so there could be some lint working its way in).
I am a novice at taking this phone apart, and I managed to do it with the following:
An old laminated Blockbuster video card
A hotel door key
A glasses flathead screwdriver.
So if you are nervous about taking it apart, don't worry... It's not hard.

My phone is haunted?

Hello all, I want to apologize ahead of time for the long post.
I recently lurked some threads to get my Honor 8 (L04 version) rooted. After 2 days of stress, near bricks and some tears I finally got set up,unlocked bootloader TWRP, Magisk root etc.
Now, I don't think this is related to that process but I happened to get a text message and when I turned on my screen, the lockscreen was "glitched" my wallpaper was the default one and half the screen was black like a dialog box should be there, kind of where the unlock pin numbers would take up space, except solid black. Then I picked up my phone and it worked fine.
Here is the thing, I have NFC off (by choice not because it broke during unlocking) but my phone was resting on top of a spare phone I use for music only when I go to the gym/running. The other phone is a BLU NEO X MINI. After some trial and error I think I know what is going on but not sure why.
If my phone is pressed up against that BLU phone and I shift it around my Honor 8 wakes up to the lockscreen. Sometimes my normal lockscreen sometimes the weird one that is glitched out. It doesn't do it if the phones are facing each other though screen to screen. I then tried with a very old EVO 3D I had and it doesnt do it either, and with an iPhone 4 and 5, also didn't cause it.
I 'm fairly certain the BLU does not have NFC but something is definitely weird. Any info would help.

If u have the time I'll recommend u to wipe ur phone and restore to stock for maybe a day before rooting again. The last time I tried rooting even my phone acted up, worse than urs in fact, I lost NFC and the firmware was corrupt so I didn't have WiFi working and I didn't have a keyboard.....

Better to rollback once or reset once.
That's weird, try a factory reset

Thank you for the replies. I believe I know what is causing it after some trial and error. I grabbed some rfid/nfc capable cards to see if it would trigger it and it didn't. So I started wondering what might cause it, I turned off the BLU phone completely then pressed it against my Honor 8 while it was on, and it locked the screen. I then wondered what if it was a magnetic thing, and googled for some answers and found another thread here about the smart cover causing an issue, that actually had a picture of what my screen looks like.

So at this point I believe it was the magnetic sensor for a smart cover on the Honor 8 just happens to be triggered by the BLU phone specifically, maybe the BLU has a magnet at the very front of the phone since even turning it back to back doesn't trigger it. Maybe others can try to experiment and reproduce the same result. For now I am just going to avoid magnets!
better to aviod bro , good job to find the solution yourself

Yea it has happened to me before as well I recollect. It was in my Mom's bag and when I took it out the screen was the same but it fixed itself after turning off the screen once.

Hi,
here my*"FIFTH HONOR 8" (see screen)
I had a problem with a bug overnight when the phone was sleeping, lol gotta wonder...
The morning it was locked on mode "smart cover" overnight (maybe humidity... like I give a F) never activated anything from smart assistance... thanks anyways.
As in the screenshot I...* did try a DIY fix late in the night %) (I mean that last fix after a week of softer tryout) . too bad having no warranty...

(Joke fix)
BTW pics taken with my 6th honorf
On another note you could try a factory reset via SD card or computer adb .. I couldn't personally. Computer smasher and "proprietary open source" didn't save the day but who care I can always repair my screen with fake yellow tint glass.
And another one .. screen surviving later on :
