[Q] 4G Sensation Restarts on Boot with Custom ROM - HTC Sensation

A bit new to the whole rooting and custom ROM thing, but the instructions here have been VERY helpful, thanks everyone!!!
I have a t-Mobile 4G Sensation and have successfully rooted it and created a backup of my stock ROM and data, etc.
Any custom ROM I install however causes the phone to go into a reboot loop when started up. I have tried 10 different ones with the same result. It always boots to the same point - that custom ROM's splash screen, then reboots itself.
Any ideas? I am always able to restore my factory config with no problems.

Hi,
Did you s-off,root,and install recovery ?

Yes, those were the steps I initially took based on instructions found on these boards..changes the CID to 11111111, etc. as well.

Did you make sure to wipe the cache and dalvik cache after installing the ROM(s)? You'll need to do that in the recovery.

Also, what firmware are you using?
If you are trying to run an ICS ROM, you will need the 3.24 firmware in order for it to work.

Yes, running 3.24 and I always perform a super wipe prior to installing any of the custom ROMs (and prior to reverting back to my backup). Tried ICS ROMs as well as 3 ROMs, always the same result....

Hi,
If you are willing to try again, have a good read of THIS THREAD .
It is a complete guide.
Read carefully, and follow all the steps...

Looks similar to the steps I went through but I'll give it a shot and let you know!!!

Worked like a charm!!! Not sure what I missed before...great ROM!
Only diff on mine is that I used Clockwork instead of 4EXT...
Thanks again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Help: Bricked my NS4G

I rooted my Nexus S 4G and was running MIUI but decided to go back to the stock ROM for awhile. When attempting to go back over to MIUI, I can no longer get into Recovery and now the stock ROM won't boot either, stuck on loading animation.
I'm on a Mac, is there anything I can do? Thanks

Boot into boot loader. Use fastboot to flash a recovery. Reinstall your rom of choice.
Thanks, I was able to get Recovery working again and after trying a few things was able to get back into my ROM, but I'm still not able to flash back and forth different ROMs. Seems my root isn't sticking with this method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970237
The root file on there is for ecalir/froyo only. Go into rm>download rom> superuser and download "superuser 2.3.6.3 efgh" and that should work.

did you wipe data(factory reset) before flashing different roms? you have to. you dont need to wipe data only when updating the same rom.
Ahhh, that must be my problem. I got so used to not wiping on MIUI that I assumed I could jump between ROMs without wiping. Thank you and apologies for the remedial posts.

[Q] I need help fixing my phone - Tried downgrading the rom, now won't boot

So I used to run the CM7 rom, then upgraded to a ISC WIP. Well, it was pretty unstable, and wanted a stable rom, so tried restoring my old CM7 backup, and now when I turn on my phone, it shows the HTC splash screen, the goes black (screen still on), and won't go past that. I realize now I downgraded the firmware, and you can't do that.
My buddy said I need to get some toolkit and reset EVERYTHING back to stock roms, re-root and all that. So can some generous person link to all that? I see a lot of it in the Inspire 4G forums, but want to make sure I have it all. And after I flash all the stock stuff, can I restore that CM7 backup (clockwork recovery mod)?
Thanks in advance for the help/reply, much appreciated.
If you can get into hboot, this may help you:

You should follow the steps to reinstall recovery, then go to flashing a rom. You only need to go through the "flashing a stock rom" section if you had problems reinstalling recovery. Just read through all the steps and you'll get it.

If you are S-OFF you just can flash a new recovery image and then flash any rom you want. You will have to do it from command prompt...
if you need help in doing that, just let me know...

I could use some help haha. I tried downloading the stock rom (PD98IMG.zip) from multiupload, but it'd down, and the mirror says it'll take several hours.

I got it. I went on the cyanogenmod irc, and they helped me. I didn't have to flash anything stock, I rebooted into my bootloader, went into recovery, wiped system, data, dalvik, cache.... All that, flashed cm7 and restored

Glad you got it sorted out, To be honest that is the first thing you do when a rom wont boot. Whenever you restore a backup it is best to wipe first

Every rom i try to install i get the logo freeze screen

Everytime i try to flash a rom with coldwork it Aborts a couple times, then finally finishes and i reboot then i get stuck on Samsung logo...so then i have to restore to stock fw and doo it all over again and still get the samsung logo... i followed this tutorial exactly and nothing ;(

In OP you linked instructions for flashing a custom recovery to apply root.
Your title suggests your goal is instead a custom rom.
You said the (linked) tutorial gave "exactly...nothing",
but you are using CWM (from the tutorial, yes?) for your failed rom flashes.
Find a rom with insructions you thoroughly understand and read its entire thread carefully.
Then follow its OP instructions exactly.
Do that and you should have your answer.
If not, you will find much more and better help a lot faster, and then certainly reach your goal.
Are you using the original CWM Recovery or the Touch Recovery? With the original, I found that I had to use Darkside Wipe due to an apparent bug that does not occur in the Touch version.

As of late it is important to use the CWM version listed in the OP. What ever version the DEV uses while building and testing the ROM, normally works best with said ROM. Not all versions of CWM work the same.

[Q] Custom Roms not working

Hello, long time reader, first time poster. I know about rooting, and installing roms and all that good stuff (had a galaxy s2 but odin bricked it). So I'm new to the sensation, and it's quite different from my previous device. My problem is that when I install a custom rom, the phone will boot and all about after about 30 seconds will freeze and restart.
Okay so these are the steps that I followed:
-Used the KGS Utility and chose "s-off"
-Followed all the prompts everything worked out fine.
-Following that I used it to install a custom recovery.
-Followed the prompts everything worked fine.
-Then I used Revolutionary CWM to flash SuperUser.
-App was there on reboot.
-Then I downloaded the AOKP "Initiate Your Swagger"[4.1.2] Rom
-Put it on my SD card and flashed it (after wiping and backing up)
-When the phone boots the setup wizard starts.
-I follow the prompt and when it gets to "Just a sec" the phone freezes then restarts.
Don't know what the problem is here.
I get the same problem when trying to flash CM10. The phone will boot, but then after 20-30 seconds will reboot.

Don't know what I'm doing wrong here. I used an all in one tool to do s-off, and install a custom recovery. Then I rooted it. Then I started trying to install custom roms but they don't seem to work. What am I doing wrong?

Be VERY specific and give a step by step detail of what you are doing to install. Give WAY more detail than you have. And put the detail in a list, not a giant paragraph.
Then we'll look at it and see what's missing.

Sorry about that. Edited my first post. I hope that is enough.
When you say it boots for 20 seconds, what exaclty for you mean.
Does it just replay the boot animation over and over? Or does it actually bring you to a home screen with the status bar and everything for 20 seconds before the reboot? That's a very important difference in diagnosing this one.
Also try installing 4EXT recovery. CWM has been known to cause weirdness with AOSP roms. Plus you may have an older version of CWM thatcan't properly install the newer roms. If you used a .zip in bootloader to flash CWM yuou probably had an older version. I have a special place in my heart for CWM too, but 4EXT is just so much better for the Sensation. (Different recoveries ar ebetter or worse on different devices.)
If you properly installed superuser on your stock rom that you have a nandroid backup for, installing 4EXT is super easy. Just restore the nandroid, which should boot up without problems, download the 4EXT app from the play store, and use the app to install teh latest version of the recovery. No need for ADB or flashing in bootloader. Then try a full wipe and fresh install of AOKP from 4EXT.

It boots up to the homescreen (with no signal) then it reboots.
I will try 4EXT and post my results. Thanks for your help thus far!
EDIT: Tryed installing 4EXT now when I try to boot into recovery it shows the HTC spash screen, then it reboots back the homescreen. So I think my recovery is gone.
EDIT 2: So I got the 4EXT recovery installed. But the ROMs are giving me the same issues (no change). I also noticed as before, when the custom roms boot there isn't any cellular signal.

Update the firmware.. You are on gingerbread firmware (revolutionary soff worked for you means you are on GB) and it won't work on ics/jb roms
Check the firmware thread by kohr-ah in sensation development section and flash universal 3.33 firmware
It will solve your rom problems

XT926 - not sure how best to proceed

First off, I just switch to my first android phone from iOS, so although I have plenty of experience jailbreaking and unlocking over there, I'm new to this, so hand-holding is appreciated
I have a developer XT926 phone. Fastboot says it's unlocked with status code 1. It came running 4.0.4, and I rooted it using motofail2go. I now want to install CyanogenMod 10.1 (or some other version 4.2 rom that you guys think is better), as described here. However, I have been unable to find detailed instructions on how to install it after booting into recovery mode. (I'm guessing those steps are well-know on xda, but forum and google searches didn't help.)
Additionally, since I have an unlocked dev phone, can I install one of these unsigned roms directly, or will I need to first install clockworkmod, safestrap, etc (and if so, any advice on which one).
Thanks the any help you can give me
You need to install a custom record very like twrp or cwm. Either is fine and you can easily switch later if you want to try them both out. Once you have your custom recovery installed, you'll need to boot into recovery. From there you will v be able to backup your current setup followed by a factory wipe and ROM install. Good luck

Thanks. So I have twrp installed and working, and made a successful backup. I was about to install CW 10.1, when I noticed comments that it seems to have a lot of issues. What rom would you recommend I install? Liquidsmooth? Eclipse? CM 10.1 anyway? Thanks again!
