Random Reboots - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

OK I'm tired of seeing people complain about random reboots even though its been discussed multiple times. So here's a true story to help you all out.
I was on octane 3.0 problem free when I decided to go to Valhalla black final. I had reboots and force close issues. I went back to octane 3.0 and started having annoying force close issues. Now I know its time to start fresh from stock since I haven't cleaned the gremlins out of my phone in so long.
So I download kies mini for the drivers (since I got a new laptop in December) and pop in a DVD that had a backup of all necessary files (odin, kc1 and whatever was in fbs original gb starter guide, I want to say kg4). I load the kc1 files in Odin and Odin freezes at checking connection.
I unplug my phone, pull the battery, reinsert the battery and put it back into download mode (which is now a pic of a phone with a cord running to a computer), I then restart Odin with the kc1 files and everything goes through fine. I then do the kg4 files, once that's done I reboot into cwm and flash bhundvens latest kernel with the newer version of cwm.
Once that's done I flash Valhalla black final fixed followed by Valhalla booster. Now I've been running flawlessly for over 24 hours so its about time to UV/OC. Once I UV/OC, if I start having issues I'll know I need to change my UV/OC values, since I wasn't having problems with stock voltage.
Alternatively you can use bhundvens heimdall package that already includes his latest kernel. I just stuck with the files I already had saved cause my home internet sucks.

Thanks... I'm planning to do pretty much the same this afternoon. I had the reboots, but they stopped for a few days when I reflashed rc1.1 kernel... started happening again yesterday, so I flashed 2d, but still getting reboots.
Figured it was time to start back from ground zero.

I only had reboots when attempting to access the messenger toggle at the lock screen, Drive smart, and battery history in spare parts.

1) mess. toggle= you have to set that via settings> tweaks (or edt tweaks)> lock screen settings> choose custom app
2) drive smart= labeled "bloat" & removed
3) spare parts= I don't believe there's gb support... Though you can access via settings> about phone> battery use
Hope this is helpful

Very helpful I appreciated it. =D, I just changed the lock screen and wasn't going to use those, they bare no real importance and the ROM functions amazingly.

.......................

Wow i had same problem with odin at setup connection but i did not.try.odin again yet as my.phone is already at stock and im about to cancel the contract.and get another phone as its not been 30 days yet. I am thinking of trying odin again.

To add to what QUIETLYloud wrote - Spare Parts is GB supported according to the app description in the market, but it also tells you not all phones store battery history and if your phone does not store it you will FC if you select that option within the app.
Add: I decided to uninstall Spare Parts that came with the ROM and download Spare Parts from the market. No more FC on battery history.

Is it a completely different version or just newer?
Installed this and still force close on battery history selection. Im batting 0-4 tonight. /sigh

yes the messageing icon will fc and cause a reboot if you do not assign a button to it... I should add that to the op its inteintally left un assigned so you can assign whatever you want to it though tweaks...
Spare parts battery status will fc it was the only version i had at the time but the newer one should be ok if you wipe the data from it then force close uninstall and download form market ... If not wait tell they add better support.

There are a couple Spare Parts in the market. The one I used was Spare Parts+ (no ads) by DroidGram. It worked for me.

The weird thing is using a widget for the battery shows the history just fine. Spare parts is a weird animal.

So, I flashed Bryan's d2 version of the kernel yesterday and am now going on 33 hours without a reboot.
I'll leave it on the charger for the night and see what uptime is in the morning, if no reboots over night then I'll flash back to 1.1 and see what happens.
speaking of charging.. I am at 73% battery life at 9 hours on battery, so bat life is looking good

I think it is newer. But if you are using the one from the market, make sure you removed the one that came with the ROM.

I'm on Bryans 1.1 which has yet to give me any problems.
I've been playing with UV settings (always OC'ed @ 1.2) trying to find the right settings for my phone. I think I'm finally making progress, I had been getting a reboot within 8 hours, on my current settings I've just hit 12.
Once I hit 24 hours up time I'll adjust again and see how it goes.

I have the random reboots to and i used the back to stock one click, but I still get the random reboots. However, it only happens when I restore my apps thru TB. Is it possible one of my apps has some sort of "virus" causing it to do that?

Actually TB causing problems is an issue that has been discussed. Personally it hasn't given me any issues, but I've read after flashing a new ROM you should only restore user apps. So don't restore app data or system apps.
Its worth a try anyway. Otherwise one app causing your problem is a possibility, but depending on how many apps you have it could take a while to restore one by one til finding the problem one.

I am having some random hangups followed by reboot when I'm using stock browser. I'm on rooted but stock GB KJ6 with stock kernel. I never had such behavior when using other apps. and it does not matter if OC or not.
Well, I'll try another browser for a while and will report back.

[Q] Multiple Issues with xt720

I am a new user of touchscreen and android phones, so I'm not sure if I'm just being picky with my issues, or if they can be fixed. But if anyone can help I'd really appreciate it.
1. My phone will randomly mute mid-conversation. I then have to re-enter my password and get back to the phone "app" to un-mute it.
2. When I'm using the camera, if I leave it long enough for the phone to go into sleep mode I can't get it to turn back on. The touch buttons are still highlighted at the bottom of the phone, but the screen is black. I can hear the phone beeping like it is turning back on, but get nothing on the display. I then have to take out the battery, wait for 30-60 sec and then put it back in. Sometimes I have to do this repeatedly before it will start working again.
3. When I try to update the OS in Settings I keep getting the message that the phone cannot connect to the server. However, I have not other problems connecting to any other sites.
4. I added the facebook app and want to remove it now. I have gone into settings > applications and "uninstalled" it. However, the icon is still on my homepage and I can't seem to remove it. When I hold my finger on it a trash bin shows up below. But this only moves it to my apps page.
5. The phone is freezes pretty often. At least a couple times a day.
Ok, this is it for now. If anyone can help I'd really appreciate.
Thanks
I going to guess your still on 2.1 when was 2.1 stock the was way too touchy. The light goes out and you can't get to turn on unless battery pull this a issue found on 2.1 their a 2.2 update coming in late July. Update this on all this option will not work xt720 it not ota compatible so your settings area will not work . Be patient wait for Cincinnati bell update and if your not with them I intend to leak it.

As much as I'm liking my return to 2.1, it does indeed freeze up often, as I recall it did when I first got the phone. (the whole screen goes black, lights on bottom turn on thing)
Facebook app is a stock app and can't be removed unless your rooted.
Never had the mute issue.
The cannot connect to server thing I have had. But it's irrelevant as there shouldn't be any updates to get anyways.
Is updating the OS the best way to improve the performace of my phone? or should I still do the overclocking. If you advise to do the overclocking, should I wait untill I update the OS, or do it now?
There is no update to the OS, except for one that just overclocks from 550 to 720mhz. Chances are you already have that though. I do think that overclocking is a good idea if you want to increase the speed of your phone obviously. 1Ghz is nice and stable.
EDIT: Or do you mean update as in install one of the 2.2 ROMs from here?
I think Queenmantis's problem are related to the original Home app. try some Launcher apps such as Launcher Pro.
for now, my favorite is GoLauncher EX, with the latest update last week, that app totally rock. you guys should try.
I really love Dexter's 2.2, but the short battery life keeps bugging me so I've already went back to 2.1 since last week. I've got no modification except Milestone Overclock + App2Card 2.8.2. Eclair is still so sweet.
Hi I have bluesteel I have modified it some and would put up against any of 2.2 or 2.1 my numbers. Startup 65 memory and regular memory is 70 to 88 program memory and don't freeze and no lag.
Sent from my XT720 using XDA Premium App
Wait for CBW's update if you don't want to root.. If you're open to the idea of rooting your phone, then go ahead and update to Dexter's 2.2, save yourself the headache, then flash one of Khalpowers' ROMs, that should fix you up real good, there's always the option of going back to stock of you don't like the results, or go back to the "official 2.2" from CBW once it's available. But that's just me..

1. Maybe the Proximity sensor for auto turn-off has problems, when you are using the phone, the backlight turn-on and your face or your ear touch the surface and it mute.
2. Obviously this is a hardware problem, you should bring your phone to where you buy it to check.
3. I have the same problem, but I think this is not our phones' fault. Motorola seems not to support this phone anymore.
4. Facebook is considered to be a system app on this phone, you can not remove it. The app call facebook you installed on the phone, just the update of the original facebook app. Don't worry about that.
5. This maybe is relevant with the problem you have in the number 2 - a hardware problem.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Please forgive if there is something wrong above. I'm willing to listen and learn.
thank you

I think most important part of App2Card is partitioning of SD card. I had tried the partitioning tool in App2Card but it never fail to fail . So I partitioned my card as below and I use "Parted" software inside Ubuntu. My SD card is Sandisk 8GB SDHC Class6 card.
1st Partition - FAT32 (7.2 GB)
2nd Partition - EXT3 (512 Mb)
3rd Partition - SWAP (256 Mb)
Create one partition at a time. Don't create everything in one batch.
Then, the card should be ready to use.
now come with the App2Card. Open the app, make sure u grant root access and all, make sure the app detect the card. then close it again. (that might be the trick). And open it again. Just do open and close till the "What's New" pop-up never show up. It might be two or three times. Then click "Install EXT/Transfer apps to EXT" button.
it will install, make the phone reboot and configure.
after the phone is rebooted, open the App2Card to make sure it show no error message. If there's any error message, just try to reboot the phone. It will surely work.

Constant force closes on phone after Heimdall GB leak?

So, I am pretty new to this whole flashing/rooting thing and I apologize if I have already made a stupid mistake. I have tried to read and understand everything thoroughly, but I am not a terribly smart person
Anyways:
I had a stock Infuse with Froyo and used the Heimdall One Click Return to Stock 2.3.6 and everything seemed to have gone over pretty well, but I keep getting force closes for random things, and I can't even open half of my apps. I click on them, they just sit there and hang, then force close. I tried to update them all in the marketplace, but still, nothing.
Also, when typing in landscape mode, sometimes the delete key seems to hang a bit or won't do it at all.
I tried searching around and found no answers, so if anyone has one, please let me know!! Thank you
Other than the force closes and mild delete issue, everything on that rom has been wonderful!
One final question: This isn't a problem, but I was under the impression that 2.3.6 would allow you to change texting layouts or colors? I tried sifting through most menus that I could think of, but can't find an option. Am I just missing something or is it not included in Gingerbread?
Actually...it seems like my battery life is shot, as well.
About 2 hours ago, my battery was at 100 from charging. I unplugged it and sent 3 text messages and nothing else. I even used the task manager to close any open apps after, but now I'm at 90 percent battery. Before the update, my phone could easily last 48 hours or so without a charge if I used it very little.
I was curious if there is a setting or something I am missing somewhere that is causing the battery drain? I know that sometimes when you root it, you have the option to change what speed the cpu is at, and it will drain your battery quicker.
Could that be the issue?
I am sorry for all of the questions, I'd just like to figure this out so that I don't have to factory reset it and go back to froyo :/
Have you tried doing a factory reset from the settings menu may help with force closes and crappy battery be warned you will lose everything on your sd card when you factory reset may want to take out your external or back everything up on your computer
After every new rom flash and re-sync, I think there is an intense demand and cpu and regeneration of background cache and data builds.
This would seem like a battery drain. In most instances, battery life will even out over several cycles. - Assuming that the settings on the custom rom is placed properly.
I have seem some bad tweak settings when I have looked over many claimed tweaks to save battery when they do the exact opposites.
Pure Stock rom have many monitoring crap and background running apps collecting data that it will take up a lot of battery from just sitting.
I don't know which stock package you've used or which heimdall version or if you ran the heimdall frontend on the leaks.
If flashed properly with re-partition using the 1click adam outler created for the uckj4 and my uclb3, there should be no FC's.
It should be pure stock with everything working "perfectly" as intended by AT&T.
rooting only gives you access to your phone..it has no bearing on battery.
Overclocking - OC - may increase battery consumption/ Running stock - should not be an issue.

I used your One-Click back to stock 2.3.6.
As far as battery, I figured it out. I went to check battery usage and apparently google music (the cloud music app) had used up a whopping 87% of my battery. I never use it, so I just uninstalled it and my battery has gone back to normal.
I still have force closes, but it seems to be less frequent if I don't restart the phone and just leave it idle.
As far as rooting it, I just used superoneclick, then installed the one-click return to stock 2.3.6.

hmmm..I'm not sure how you did it but the package I made w/ UCLB3 is not rootable with SOC. UCKJ4 is possible, but I don't think you want to run that build.
If you wanted to run a rooted uclb3, dman has made a rooted rom already.
If you're running stock uclb3..completely att, not deOdexed, there is no root on that...there is recovery if you used an insecure kernel...but no root...unless you installed busybox and superuser binaries yourself.
fc's is not right on stock uclb3...you may want to start over.

Hmmm. I must have done something wrong then
I just ran the executable .jar file in the one-click return to stock thread, but maybe it's force closing BECAUSE I had rooted it before? I don't even care to have it rooted, I was just under the assumption that I had to have it rooted to install anything like 2.3.6 on it, but I think I must have misread something. I just want GB because I am tired of waiting for ATT to roll out the updates haha.
I'll try starting over, but does that mean that I have to format to stock, then use the 2.3.6 install?
Again, I apologize for all of the questions.
just run the package. it should take care of everything else.
if you want to run a custom rom, run the entropy in post #2, go into recovery, wipe and flash the rom you want.
it's that simple.

Okay, well I reset my phone back to factory state and tried again, and everything seems to be working this time. No silly force closes, all of my apps work and my battery life is back to normal.

[Q] So much lag, all the time

Alright I'm pretty fed up with this phone. I've had it for a year now, having probably 4 of them now due to replacements (GPS problems, static phone call problems, etc.) that Verizon has replaced. The same problem I have had on ALL of the Samsung Charges I have had is terrible terrible general lag, especially with the keyboard.
I have to restart my phone at least 6 times daily just to be able to use it, if I don't it lags so much I can "click" on an app just like the web browser and it will take 15 seconds to load up, same for messaging etc. It's mostly noticeable with messaging where I can start up the messaging app and click on a text message and it will take 20 seconds to load, then I click on the text entry box and the keyboard doesn't show up for another 20 seconds and from there each key I press only happens seconds after I type them, not instantly like it should be.
Things I have tried:
- Task killer apps to free up memory
- Cache cleanup apps
- Resetting the phone to factory defaults (this has happened on EVERY charge I have received so it doesn't seem to be local to my specific phone at least)
- Erasing the SD card / using the phone w/o a SD card
- New keyboard apps
- Updating (has been like this through various versions of android)
Things I'm getting close to trying:
- Throwing my phone at a wall
- Running over my phone with my car
- Hitting my phone with a bat
- Using my phone as a lightning rod
When I clear the memory (usually at around 320/373 MB being used) it only goes down to around 270/373 MB being used. I barely have any apps installed apart from the default phone apps. My phone is using that much memory even a minute after restarting it, doing so only fixed the problem for the short while before it starts up again. It happens directly after a factory reset as well so it's not like I have any super big apps I downloaded that are causing it.
My keyboard process actually hangs at times and errors leaving me with no keyboard at all until I restart my phone:
"The application Samsung keypad (process com.sec.android.inputmethod.axt9) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again."
It's seriously pathetic, I used to have the Droid X, Incredible, etc. and never had any problems like I have with this phone. I would rather have my old Env touch back with just general web browsing, at least it could text without erroring.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Not really into the whole doing things that can brick the phone, if I do that I'm stuck with it and Verizon won't take it back because I did "fowl play" things.
Unfortunately this phone is horrible stock, but fortunately flashing another ROM is super easy. Also it's pretty hard to brick this phone. And if you did is also pretty easy to fix it back to stock. This phone really is pretty amazing with a custom ROM

Custom rom is definitely the way to go. There are plenty of places to look and read to get an idea of what you're doing and there is almost always step by step instructions. It makes a world of difference and is like a new phone when you're done. Read up on Tweaked 2.0 and the custom FP1 (PBJ) kernel. And if something goes wrong there are plenty more places and people that can help you get it back to stock so that Verizon will be none the wiser that any "fowl play" was involved. Not difficult at all (if you follow the instructions exactly) and is WELL worth it. As KV said: "No guts, no glory"

Get a different phone. The problem seems to be between you and the Charge!
Stock works really well since FP1. My only major complaint is the camera on the replacement I have doesn't focus worth a damn!
Gotta agree with the guys here.
Root and ROM, bro. The Charge, otherwise, blows.
I would do Tweak2.0, but debloated stock FP1 would be great too.
The Charge is a great phone with proper software. Software seriously makes it or breaks it.
There are plenty of us on the forums to give advice if you get stuck.
Some tips on flashing the Charge:
I use Odin 1.85
Run Odin as Administrator is Windows 7 or Vista
Remove SIM before flashing
PUT BATTERY IN before flashing
Use a USB port on the back of the computer (not the front ones)
Use the OEM USB cable
Download your ROM file with Getright or verify MD5 checksum
BACKUP any info (your contacts should be synced with Google)
Format SD card (before you Odin a ROM ) as FAT32 with 32K size (you don't have to format, but I do)-- note that you can format the sdcard with Windows with the sdcard in the phone if you have mass storage on
NEVER, EVER use the phone button in Odin, you MUST use PDA
Be patient when flashing, it seems to take 7 minutes or so.
Be patient on first first, it has to build Dalvik cache, etc.

if you suspect the keyboard app could be the issue, have you tried another one, or tweaking your keyboard settings? I use ICS keyboard - works great for me. sounds like there could be a conflict somewhere in there..

yeah I tried that..
Got too fed up last night I flashed it, used this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1406951
It is much faster however still not perfect w/ messaging (the main problem as its what I use the most and therefore notice it the most on), still takes some time for the messaging app to load up and additional time to load each thread and then time to load the keyboard once in a thread.
Also if anyone knows that flash and knows the answer to these new questions that would be great, have tried searching...
- When using speech to text on the new keyboard I get an error "Could not connect" to the microphone instead of getting the usual "Speak Now"... persists through restarting
- Can you still screenshot with the charge on this flash? Used to be back + home button, no longer works. (found people talking about "Tweaktools" but found nothing of what they are, where to get them etc. )
About your last one - go to Terminal Emulator (may have to download from play store) type su, press enter, type tweaktools, press enter. I personally would recommend getting something like ShootMe as the stock service isn't very reliable (back button and home have issues)

[Q] Software problem?

I've been using this phone for a year and a half now. Updated the phone to KJ6 when it came out. Modded with Adrenaline shot and lagfix. Phone been treating me well until yesterday. I was still using it like normal before I went to sleep and it was running normal as well. The next day, the phone is a messed up (kinda). The home button doesn't work anymore. It doesn't bring me back to the "Desktop" when I hit it. Lights up and vibrates when I press it. Holding it doesn't bring up the recent app menu. I can only exit apps by hitting the back button. Only time it worked is when I'm on the phone, It does bring me back to the "Desktop" when I hit it. Another problem is the power menu. Everything's gone except for "Power off" (no flight mode, etc). Lock screen disappeared, I don't use any pattern lock or password. So I normally would have the gray screen I need to slide off the screen when I hit the power button, but it's gone now. The big problem is, I can only dial out with the phone. I cannot receive any phone calls. Data, text messages, wifi all work fine, not sure about GPS. Anybody had this problem before? Is there any fix for it? If not, I guess I have to just wipe everything, flash new rom and hope for the best?
Any suggestion would be appreciated. Thanks in advance
I had that phone about as long as you and never had that happen before. I'd try running the gremlin remover and that should clear up any problem you have with the phone

I agree with falcons2 try the gremlin remover, but if that doesn't work maybe you should look into some of the ICS roms that have soft keys.
Good Luck!
So I guess I am going to flash new rom. There are so many roms out there and I'm not sure which ones are good. I would like my phone to be fully working, so I guess ICS is out. That leaves GB roms. I'm looking for something with pretty good speed, stable, clean and good battery life. Suggestions??

That's a little harsh! Assuming you don't need TVout ( ), most of the ICS ROMs are "daily drivers" at this point in time.
I would say Valhalla black is probably the best GB rom personally, or even Valhalla Black FB edition
Here is VB > http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1404863
And here is FB edition > http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1598561
Raver said he MIGHT update VB (please don't bug him about it though), but as-is its an amazing rom with unmatched battery life imo
Main reason I can't do ICS is because wifi calling doesn't work (I think?). Other than that, I don't see any other problems with ICS.
Just wondering how the Barebone KJ6 runs? It's almost stock so I can't go wrong with it? Just need to add back whatever I need. I looked at those VB roms, both look very good to me. Thanks for the suggestions
Love Valhalla black, but if you want more stock gingerbread, then go for Valhalla final... black is based in final.

Similar problems with mutliple ROMS - What gets left behind when flashing?

So I've had a few similar problems with recent ROMS i have flashed.
I'd been using CM9 and CM10 for a while, but got tired of lag and bugs. I thought I'd go back to GB for a while and reflash after some bugs had been worked out.
From CM10 odin'd back to GB stock with CWM and root, then installed AEON purely by reputation. That lasted for about a week. The phone had all kinds of issues with the battery. The battery level would often be all over the place (i know this sometimes happens after a reboot.) After a full charge the phone would stay on for about 4-12 hours, and simply turn off. Prior to shutting off the battery would read at 50%+.
Every time the phone shut off like this I could charge it all day and it would not restart. The only way it would start is if i pulled the battery, plugged in the carger and reinserted the battery. Once I did that an empty battery would show up on the screen. However it was not the normal green one with gradients that would show up, but simply a white box showing no charge. If i held down the power button eventually the normal battery charging screen would show up and it would reboot.
I'm assuming the phone was misreading the battery level for some reason. I tried clearing battery stats. No change.
So I thought 'time for a new rom'
I'm not certain if I went back to stock before this.
So from there I went back to CM9 and then to CM10. The battery issues remained, and two new issues arose.
My reception in the notification bar would turn to an empty triangle. It was not a misreport. I could not make calls or access the internet.
Also whenever i went in to airplane mode it would be grayed out in the power menu. It was impossible to turn off airplane mode without restarting.
I'm not on the most recent verison of liquid smooth. The issues remain, but I don't think it's the ROM as others don't seem to be having these issues.
Does anyone know any reason for this?
My understanding of flashing is that it's essentially a list of folders and files that replaces or adds to existing ones on the phone. Does it actually erase anything? Obviously it leaves our simcards and picture files. It also seems to leave app folders.
And just to be clear I wiped user data, cache, fixed permissions, etc. IMEI is still there, so i don't think that's the service issue. I did not restore any apps with titanium backup for similar. Everything was installed from the play store.
Whenever you flashed back to stock, do you happen to flash boot loaders?

I flashed back to GB so I don't think that was necessary. I've not had the other bootloader issues with garbled display, etc.
