Okay, can someone kinda fill me in on developmental status for rooting the Mytouch 4g Slide. I would like to root mine. I did some researching for a little while and is kinda lost. I haven't rooted a phone for a couple years now.
Developmental status? Like what roms do we have? Or, how do u root?

Actually both. Where do I begin?
The unlockr has the revolutionary method on there. That's how most of us did it. Make sure all the links work before u use it.
Once u follow through with that, use rom manager to update to the latest clockwork mod.
Once u get rooted make a backup of ur stock rooted rom and start flashing whatever u want
Use undeadk9's rubix ics 5.2 from page 180 with the messaging fix zip in the op page 1
Follow the directions I posted on page 148
=) that's the best, fastest, and most stable rom atm. But there's a few real ics roms out there if u wanna play around with them.

If your HBOOT version is 1.45.0013 (get into HBOOT by turning off fast boot in settings, turning off your phone, and then holding volume down and power), you won't be able to get perma-root until HTC fixes their bootunlocker or until someone else devises a method to get S-OFF.

We have discovered that if your machine is S-OFF you can flash any version hboot you want. I swap back and forth between all 4 consistently.
----
Shawn411:
They got you covered, just run revolutionary and S-OFF the device, then you can do anything you want after that.
You will start with CWM 4.0.0.8 if you choose to install during the Rev process, if not then you will be S-OFF with stock recovery.

Replacing Stock Recovery: Clockworkmod
If you have S-OFF but stock recovery, the easiest method is to:
1 - Follow the instructions in This Thread to get temp root.
2 - Without rebooting, add your market account to the device.
3 - Install ROM Manager from the market.
4 - Flash Clockworkmod through ROM Manager.
5 - What you do next is up to you (but a clockworkmod backup isn't a bad idea.)

Okay, I used Revolutionary to S-OFF my device. It gave me the option to install clockworkmod recovery. I typed in yes but my recovery still looks the same as stock. All it says at the top is Revolutionary~ and all the other information.
...that is your hboot menu.
Hit volume down to select recovery in the list, then press power to accept - now you will see your recovery.

Need help with rooting MT4GS!
I have noticed that this thread looks to be the lastest work on rooting a MyTouch 4G Slide. I have the HBOOT 1.45.0013 and I was wondering if anyone has figured out how to get either the HBOOT downgraded or Revolutionary to work with it. Any help with links to this fix will be appreciated.

I don't own an MT4G or Panache, but I started this thread for the inevitable arrival of Mobilicity & Videotron customers who would like to mod an HTC Panache. Once the MyTouch 4G Gingerbread update came out, it was found that the Fre3vo root exploit (originally found for the Sensation/Evo 3D) will also temp-root this phone. To get S-OFF you have to roll back to an old Froyo MT4G firmware - from there you can roll back forward to anything you want.
Differences between MT4G Gingerbread and Panache for the purpose of this thread:
- Panache requires a gold card because the ROM you roll back to comes from a different carrier.
- Your preferences in terms of what ROM to put on your phone after S-OFF may be different from T-Mobile customers - ergo, discuss here if this is an issue.
Thanks to jgobeil for posting the guide in post #98:

Now that the rooting guide for the Panache is completed and posted, may I suggest that you update the first post of the Panache thread to refer newcomers to this thread to post #98 where the guide is.
This will make it easy for these people and maybe avoid costly mistakes.
Best regards and thanks for your help.

If Gingerbreak will work on it, that would be the only difference, instead rooting with Visionary+, they'll root with Gingerbreak and proceed with the same S-OFF guide, hopefully flashing engineering bootloader.

Since it has launched with Gingerbread, I am guessing the initial root steps will be a little different. If any MT4G devs have any idea what Panache users should try differently, post it here.

There is someone else here on the forum who flashed the entire firmware of the Panache onto his MT4G and was unable to re-root with Gingerbreak even for temp root. Fortunately the user in question had Radio S-OFF so was eventually able to fix it. But this hints that Gingerbreak won't work.

That was me. And yes, none of the rooting methods out there will work on panache (including gingerbreak by SOC) firmware. I had to hboot-flash the stock 2.2.1 firmware and then was able to root.

Thanks for clarifying. Of course you had S-OFF and the Mobi/Vtron Panache comes S-ON. So this leaves an open question of what is the first step to root the Panache.

Could you explain all the steps you took to achieve this on the Panache?
I just read your thread and it looks like you actually had a MT4G running the Panache ROM. But was your phone already S-OFF? If so, that'd probably explain why Gingerbreak worked. Not sure that'd fly on a factory Installed Panache.

Details on post I started, but its glacier used panache RUU.

Yes it was s-off, but another user who did that could'nt root though he also was s-off
Sent from my HTC Panache using XDA App
I see. So it's still not clear what will or won't work with a factory S-ON Panache.
It's reported that Gingerbreak does not work with S-ON Panache, but what's unclear is whether it can still be used to achieve temp root. If it can, this suggests a way to force it to an earlier T-Mo RUU which will permit the use of the S-OFF kernel exploit.
as far i know, both are same hardware and you dont need s-off to use factory RUU. thus if i can use panache RUU regardless of s-off i can flash mytouch 4g RUU on panache.

You need at the very least temproot to edit the "misc" partition before flashing an older version bootloader RUU, otherwise it will reject it. Since it is not yet established that temproot works on factory S-ON Panache, there is no established way to downgrade the RUU. So there is still no clear pathway yet.
If you say so though I still think u dont need any sort of root for official RUU.exe
Sent from my HTC Panache using XDA App
An official RUU will fail, even with a gold card, if it's an older version than the current bootloader. All MT4G official firmwares are older than the Panache's. The only way around this is a root hack.

Okay so I see on the Mobilicity and Videotron Panache that it has peak speeds of 21 Mbps whereas the MT4G is 14.4, did they make a hardware change or is this in the firmware?

No, it didnt even temp root. As i said earlier i did not have a true s-off. I even tried flashing cwm through fastboot but bootloader didnt allow that (it should have if i had a true s-off).
Alright I am a noob, I have legit looked everywhere but all I have been able to do is find noobproof rooting methods and those won't work for me!! I had an LG optimus one and I rooted it simply using the app Gingerbreak, flashed a whatchamacallit recovery thingy......and installed cyanogenmod. I forget exactly what I did. See I am really new to all this. Basically can someone tell me what is so different between rooting an optimus one and a sensation? and can someone direct me to a post that DOES have a simple way to root, or at least take the time to write one here? I would appreciate it EXTREMELY MUCH.

I was like you just yesterday but lost my virginity last night ( as far as rooting goes). It's super easy to do. Check on YouTube there are vids that show you step by step how to do it. I didn't want to root my sensation before cause I didn't know anything about it. But last night I just did it and my current rom ( android revolution HD 3.6.1) is beyond amazing. People who don't root have NO idea what they're missing. It's a must. Anyway you have to use the revolutionary method to get S-off. Getting S-off doesn't mean you're rooted it "just" mean you have an unlocked boot loader and you can achieve root. But yeah check the vids on YouTube just type how to s-off and root sensation and follow the exact same step. When you're all done, check on YouTube again how to flash a rom, you will b a pro in no time!
Thanks!! yeah I did root my optimus one like I said and flashed cyanogenmod but my phone stopped receiving texts as soon as I did...I thought it was the fact that I rooted it, but in fact it was cuz I didn't pay my phone bill for two months so i was afraid of rooting after that for fear that it might happen again. But yes, so,
where does busybox and superuser fit into all of this?? I recall when i rooted my optimus one superuser appeared on my phone...and I had to download busybox separately. Is busybox necessary for flashing certain roms??

You can download both from Android Apps. Sometimes when trying to download an app (eg.Titanium Backup) it will ask if you want to load busybox or superuser. It is not very difficult.

I can't get over how simple rooting and flashing a custom ROM really is.
Took all of twenty minutes including downloading all the files, I'm now S-OFFed and running ARHD 3.6.1 with the recommended radio and my phone is absolutely flying - Quadrant benches of 2800+.
And as above, if I ever need to go back to stock I can either restore the backup I made when flashing the ROM, or flash a stock RUU and job done.

There is a way to do this but if u are new to all this then it's difficult. What i would recommend it staying s-off and just flashing back the stock rom which can be found here https://rapidshare.com/#!download|74...CDBD275E3244F1
As i came to realise you are a LOT better off having s-offed, and you will come to see that the custom roms here are an awful lot better than what comes with the phone. Just give it time.

if u follow the guide i just gave you this will remove revolutionary from hboot menu and return you to completely to stock.
basically the HBOOT revolutionary has installed on your phone is locked against updating so you need to push the ENG HBOOT S-OFF via adb, then you can just flash the stock RUU which will downgrade HBOOT back to stock and remove clockworkmod recovery. everything will be exactly as it was before you touched it

You should start here for example: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300
Yes, it is said to read well and understand that you want to do and unlock the boot with better revolutionary than http://htcdev.com/, good luck

Do not use the htc unlock. Will not give you read write state. U need to use revolutionary cause it roots, unlock boot loader, and installs recovery. Please don't miss lead him.

I said that after http://htcdev.com/ will not be able to flash custom kernel, and unlock a better revolutionary
your best bet is to stick to xda it has everything you need to root and flash whatever you want there are alot of threads that will explain what root off is and how to get it. it will aslo explain how to flash roms, and what that is good luck you can always post here in the q&a with any problems you have
thanks randy & kaym....
anyways its S-off...

Actually, your the one misleading people, revolutionary doesnt actually root a phone, it just gives an unlocked bootloader. Installing superuser from market is what gives apps root and a line in the build.prop file gives the user root permissions

i have an htc evo shift 4g that originally had 2.3.4 on it. i successfully (i think) downgraded the system to 2.2. but every single time i try to flash the hboot_eng.nb0 to gain S-off the md5sum comes back different than its supposed to be. funny thing is, its perm-rooted somehow. i decided to go ahead and reboot anyway and attempt perm-root and it stuck. no brick, no errors, no nothing. its fine. but as far as i have read i need to have S-off to be able to flash custom roms.
am i correct in this assumption?
before anyone tries to point me to an hboot flashing tutorial, be aware i have looked at ABSOLUTELY EVERY SINGLE ONE AND FOLLOWED DIRECTIONS TO A T!!!!!
any help would be absolutely appreciated
EDIT: SOLVED
ok so after thinking i did everything right (which i sorta did) i glanced through all the tutorials again and found the answer.
CREDIT GOES TO gzetski and unbrkshft AT ANDROIDFORUMS.COM
All I had to do was re-install 2.2 per gzetski's instructions. Then I followed the rooting instructions at the top of this post as if I was running 2.3.4. It was flawless. I was able to downgrade the hboot and S-OFF. The phone is now running CM7 and the owner is quite pleased.

You don't have to be S-Off to flash custom ROMs... but it sure makes it easier. Go into bootloader and let us know exactly what it says at the top, there should be about 4 lines.
Re: [Q] Cannot for the life of me flash hboot on 2.2
Yup, if you're s-on you can flash roms but you have to flash the kernel seperately, which means you have to carry around a computer with you whenever you go on a flashing spree

I have bought several apps through the play store just to help support development. The more time I put into learning and moding the more I appreciate the time, effort, and knowledge of the people who put these things together.
