[Q] Import SMS from SIM to Android 2.3+ - Galaxy 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am here cause I can't find any related answer on xda nor the web.
Is there a way (workaroud, app, anything else) for reading and also copying SMS stored into SIM card to a phone with Gingerbread or ICS firmware?
With Eclair and Froyo firmware I used to go in SMS app -> settings -> Copy SMS into phone, but with newer versions of Android the option is disabled (also for SIM contacts... ).
I use SMS Backup & Restore for the backup to SD, but there's no option to read SIM messages.
I faced this problem cause I've to change phone (moving temporarly the SIM) for some reason and my older phone is not Android, so SMS are still stored in SIM card.
Thanks for reply

Not so many answers all together!
I can see many viewers and no one can say a thing...
Are there no solution or I'm the only one with this problem?
Inviato dal mio GT-I5800

I have the same problem too
have looked around google but still not found the solution

the same problem.
my android is 2.3.4, and i can not copy/move sms from sim card to phone.

The only idea I have is to flash a Froyo-ROM, back the SMS up (with an app like this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zegoggles.smssync) and than import them on 2.3+

artemis 2.1 - How do i migrate contacts?

Hi
Upgraded my T-Mobile MDA Compact III to artemis_touch_2.1_WWE.n
(had issues tho, had to use 2.0 to unlock it, and 2.1 for the software, but now works great)
However, i cant see how to access the full list of my contacts on my SIMM card.
Only shows the Phone contacts (which is empty)
If i begin to type out a phone number, my simm contacts appear.....is there anyway to migrate them across, or to tell the OS to use that as the main contacts list?
Thanks
Paul
Seems you are in the wrong forum my friend any ways search around in the wiki there is a tweak to show sim contacts or search the forums for the cab file by the name of Default_Show SimContacts or somwthing like that. This will make visible your sim contacts too.

Question for 2 apps.

I am going to flash a new rom shortly. I have a need for two apps if they are out there.
1. I have my phone completely set up with my favorite people, internet favorites mail settings etc. what program will back up all of them and make for a easy transition to a different rom?
2. I have all my contacts on my sim card and through outlook. Id like to back up the contacts from the sim then delete them from the sim card. ( my other phones are Android based.) Is there an app for that?
thanks in advance.
pim backup seems to work quite well on backing up mail setup and contacts incl fav people.
not sure about internet favorite... back it up manualy just in case (ie copy the fav folder)
cheers

[Q] HTC Hero merging sms threads

Hi, pretty new to the forum and couldn't really find exactly how to solve this issue.
So I've been using HTC hero's built-in sms and i recent flashed the entire phone to load a new rom. Anyways I backed up everything using titanium backup as well as Mybackup pro. Every was fine until i noticed that a few sms threads shrunk significantly (they shrunk from about 1.1k to about 200 each). I only realized now that i forgot to un check the auto delete sms option.
Since I have the old sms saved on the backup, I was wondering if theres anyway i could merge the threads back together. I've been told that some sms apps like GO sms allow you to backup and recover sms from the sim card. I downloaded the app but dont really understand how I'd go about merging the threads.
Any help is appreciated

[Q] WhatsApp backup? (Activation SMS each time I reflash)

Hi. I just arrived to HD2 world, and I can't find any info about some way to backup WhatsApp. I say WhatsApp not because of its data (conversations), but for the activation SMS, that means every time I reflash I have to reactivate paying for a SMS
In Android I had Titanium Backup so I just restored. I hope there is some way here in WP7, or a Registry key to save the code and restore or something.
Thank you very much, waiting for some light here.

Use WP7 Easy Backup Tool to take backup of your phone, it will take all data & application backup.

I was thinking more of a specific thing, not all in a pack, but I don't really care. Thank you very much! I'll try. Hope it works.
LOL I just installed WhatsApp after reflashing, updating, reset and reactivation, and it didn't make the SMS step. Just from input cell number to chats.
Sorry. I guess I was way too farsighted!
Sorry to bump this thread, but where does whatsApp actually store the messages? It doesnt seem to use Isolated storage so there is no way there is just a data file that we can download..
anyone else have any idea's?
trying WMDC/ActiveSync launcher as I post this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=23064872#post23064872
EDIT:
WMDC/ActiveSync launcher allows me to go to the app directory
Microsoft Windows Phone\\\Applications\Data\218A0EBB-1585-4C7E-A9EC-054CF4569A79\Data\IsolatedStore
where 218A0EBB-1585-4C7E-A9EC-054CF4569A79 is the application ID (might not be the same for everyone but I assue it is just to make this easy
There is a file in Isolated Storage called messages.sdf. In my case its about 640k in size but I guess that varies with the amount of messages stored on the phone.
I havent tried my device and copying the files back, but at least I can store them on my PC
Opening the file with Notepad shows messages and they are unprotected/not encryped. There is a lot of wierd caracters inbetween the messages, but it also shows whatsapp IDs from the recipients.
As soon as I reflash my rom (if new HD2 rom comes out soon) I will see if I can restore the messages.
So if you have acces to the Isolated storage dirs, you are able to copy the messages to your PC.
Note that WMDC/ActiveSync launcher requires a fully unlocked device.

Problems with contacts + suggestion for memory card

So I have 2 problems with the contacts:
1) When I go in messaging and then add a contact, all are doubled. Doing some research it seems the messaging application displays all contacts, in my case phone + sim. Now one of the solutions would be to delete the contacts from the sim, but then there's the other problem.
2) For some strange reason I cannot edit or delete contacts from the sim. I used to be able, but then I suddenly couldn't anymore. Then I did a factory reset (because of another small problem) and I was able to edit contacts. After some time it didn't allow me to do it, again...
Any ideas as to why? I don't use any third party application and don't have a google/facebook/whatever account connected. Galaxy 3 updated to Froyo.
3) I currently have a SanDisk 4GB class 2 card. It's quite old (3-4 years) and it has been formatted a couple of times. I also need more space so I'm planning to buy a new card.
I know our phone supports up to 32GB but that is really too much for me, so I was thinking to buy a 8/16 GB class 6/8/10. Any particular suggestions (brands, sizes, speeds)? I'm buying on Amazon UK.
Thanks for any help.

huh...well...for contacts: just delete them all
that are on phone...backup the ones you need with any app capable of backup contacts...then only import the ones you want from sim...and restore the ones that were on phone before & aren't doubled...
for sdcard:
i personaly use Verbatim 8Gb class 10...it's great sdcard...
what is above 8Gb...on our phone takes long time on boot up for media scanner to scan if the sdcard is filled a lot...
anyway...i'm more than happy with this one i've bought from some Slovenian online store....
I hope that helps a bit

Thanks for the reply.
What I would like to do with the contacts is edit the ones in the sim, but as I said I can't.
As for the SD card I went ahead and bought a Samsung 16GB class 10 card. It has a good price and positive reviews.
About the media scanner taking long, it shouldn't be a problem since I add only music to the card and I do it only once in a while.
My suggestion would be to open a google account.
And never worry for your contacts.
Registering takes just a couple of minutes.

There's also one another solution if you want to hide double contacts.
Go to more from the menu option select display option. open up the drop down list of sim..uncheck "all contacts."
You are done.
Also If you want to backup all your contacts select Import/ Export--> export to sd card..
You have backuped all your backups in your sd card as a vcf file.
Whenever you format/factory reset your phone and want your contacts back..go to import/export--> import from sd card .it will automatically search for vcf files in your sd card and you are done
For editing purpose you will have to use kies if its working still after flashing or else try my phone explorer its an app that will backup messages, contacts, menu, call logs etc
Hope it helped.

as already said:
open a google mail account, store your contacts online at google
-> no need to worry about loosing the contacts at next format/wipe!
For speed and classes, please have a look here.
no real need for fast and expensive cards.
Taken from this thread.
The choice is yours.

Thanks guys for the replies.
I will probably link it to my google account.
Regarding the memory I already suspected it but I use my card on a card reader so class 10 makes a difference.
