[Q] I need help on choosing?? - Motorola Atrix 2

Alright, so heres the battle: should i update my phone and have a more stable better softwared device BUT lose root or should i not update and have a faultier 2.3.4 device but keep root.RAHH. The only thing i really use root for are chainfire (life saver) and ram manager and of course to remove att bloat. But, I don't know if i could work without chainfire, any suggestions?? however, when we get an ics update i will do that without question. so any help??

SEARCH!!!.... But anyways you can maintain root through the update but you have to edit mount_ext3.sh. The link can be found here
This way you will have both of best worlds! ALSO make sure you pull the file with adb edit then push back because ES File explorer is known to cause a bootloop.

I just updated last night and kept root. The link above is for bionic. Here is the one for Atrix 2. Just read through the first 4ish pages before editing the file. (If you used one click you need add different text)
I used one click to root originally and matched my file to the one shown on page 3.

Actually the way for the Bionic is the exact same as for the Atrix 2. (As we pulled it straight from the Bionic).

Thank you joeykrim for the following:
RADIO - the radio is updated through a radio.diff.
SYSTEM - no system/app files are changed
it appears this OTA is much more extensive than the previous OTA.
this one appears to apply small patches to every application in /system/app. a few are large in size, but most are very small.
it also appears to patch:
16 files in system/bin
etc/wimax/
etc/firmware/fw_bcm4329.bin and (ap)
31 files in framework
28 files in lib
2 files in lib/modules - bcm4329.ko and sequans_sdio.ko
SYSTEM updated files (might be more, researching now):
wifi module - BCM4329B1_002.002.023.0396.0402.hcd
android.hardware.camera.flash-autofocus.xml
android.hardware.telephony.cdma.xml
ton of framework files
libCamera_donut.so
libCamera_eclair.so
Fixes & Bugs:
From user npace: (I extracted and fastboot flashed the kernel zImage. Here's a rundown of the issues that I tested for fixes
1. Touch input lag -- fixed -- tried with multitouch visualizer 2
2. Improperly grounded touchscreen -- fixed -- tried on multiple surfaces
3. 30 fps cap -- still there

Even if you rooted via toasts method, i would not update until a custom ROM is put out with the update included. You could lose root ability forever.
Anyone know the location of system updates are stored on the phone? I am trying to locate using the adb shell but have had no luck finding the download yet.

I'd recommend not installing it at all until the devs here have had a chance to go through it and release it themselves. You risk loosing your root if you don't. Then follow their release instructions to apply it.
Btw the radio is 2.05.00.06.10 with this update.

No, looks like just about all the preloaded APK's are in there, including the Sprint crap. I assume if you apply it as stock you'll get them back, but I could be wrong.

The official froyo release from HTC / Sprint will definitely contain all the "Sprint Junk" and if you've given up root to one of these updates and go to apply that it will all come back. You may never get root again in order to re - clean it up once you apply froyo.
Be patient. It won't take the devs here long to cook up an update for us. Flipz had the rooted .6 update rom out in 24 hours or so...
.....
Just took a look inside the zip file. All the apk files are there, including the sprint junk...
Just installed....all is well with root...

[ROM] Stock Inspire 4G ROM | Rooted

Had quite the night. ANYWAY, you need to be rooted in order to flash this (it's meant to be flashed through CWM)
This the stock Inspire 4G ROM with su and busybox installed. Basically, I took attn1's Inspired DHD AFR zip package, and replaced all the files in the system directory with the system files stripped out of the RUU that was posted here earlier this week.
Sound quality is back to normal!
One problem with this build is that ro.secure is still set to 1 (you can't use adb remount). I was originally going to include a batch file that would pull settings.db off the phone and update install_non_market_apps with a value of 1 (for sideloading). Without adb remount, it's a bit more complex to enable sideloading.
Version 2 with sideloading enabled will be coming soon! Hopefully.
DOWNLOAD HERE: http://www.multiupload.com/7867ZQNEM4
Off to bed!
You and attn1 are marvelous. I really should have been more patient
All this figured out in less than one week. I'm torn now, my current setup is awesome.

With this rom are we able to install non market downloads straight from the phone since sideloading wont?

Not yet, there is a workaround but it takes about 5-10 min
If I can figure out how to set ro.secure = 0, enabling sideloading would take under 20 seconds

No, because the option to install non market apps is not in this rom. Thus the need for sideloading.
I posted in your other original thread but ill post it here too...
Couldnt you use the method described here to do the "temproot" in order to get the adb root prompt and change it that way?

How about if I take the .apk file from my SD card with root explorer and move it to the /data folder, would it work? Or perhaps move it to /system/app, change permissions and reboot?

You would need to unpack the boot.img, change the default.prop file (I think) and then repack the img. I know that's oversimplified, especially if you don't know the parameters for repacking the img, but does that help?
Another thing for v2 would be to swap out the WifiRouter on the AT&T stock rom for the one that was on the desire so we can tether ;D

[Q] Anyway to install SWYPE

Is there anyway of using swype on this phone without going through the root process and loaded a custom ROM?
TIA
You can sign up for the beta at http://swypeinc.com, but since the phone is locked down to keep you from installing non-Market apps, you won't be able to install the file they send you. If you can get your hands on the .apk file for the installation, you can use Sideload Wonder Machine to install it without needing root access.
http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc-inspire-4g/60295-guide-installing-swype-beta-htc-inspire-4g.html
I don't know if it requires root, but I have root and I got mine. lol
Thanks, I will give it a shot
I tried every trick known to man .. lol ... the only way you are going to get swype if it is an ATT phone is to root the phone otherwise they have blocked the option.
I was able to install it via Side Wonder Machine. I must say, it's amazing.
Install APK's easily
This is the best way at least for me. Super easy and the software has many other uses.
(P.S. I stole this... it's from some android forum)
1. Download Droid Explorer for your system. http://de. codeplex. com/ (remove spaces from link)
2. Now, go to your phone. Settings> Applications> Development > USB Debugging.
3. Make sure you downloaded the drivers for the captivate then plug in your phone and select PC connect and mount the phone.
4. Now open Droid Explorer and connect the device. Right click and select batch install.
5. Now a screen should pop up and you should select the APKs you would like to install and it is self explanatory from there on out.
Go here
http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc-inspire-4g/60295-guide-installing-swype-beta-htc-inspire-4g.html
Register and follow the instructions.
This was posted in the other thread about keyboards for the inspire. It's exactly what I did and My phone is 100% stock. No root or anything.
Followed the AndroidCentral method last night and it worked great!
It works like a champ!!!!

Thanks as well. I should be getting my Inspire tomorrow. I'm so used to swyping on my captivate this should make my life easier. Can't wait to sideload this on.
Does anyone know if its possible to use the swype from the motorola's? Like the atrix, droid x etc. I really like the theme of that one.
Nope, none of these worked
The Android Central method--i don't get past the ADB command, computer doesn't know what to do with that...
I can sideload fine and got the installer on my phone but it won't download the actual swype.apk. Instructions say to wait even though it's an error... Waited half hour and still no swype.apk appeared in downloads folder.
Took the swype.apk provided in this forum. Installed fine but out of date... which is fine. I'm happy to get officially from Swype. Tried the swype installer now I have swype (out-of-license) installed. Installer said you need to update license. Ok fine. Great! Tried and came up with error.
I love swype that I had on my captivate. I would pay for the app. Just not sure I'm willing to root my two day old phone just to get swype on it...

I used the androidcentral method. Worked fire me, no root. Just sign up for the beta on swype's website. Then go from there. I think I was stuck in the same part as you. Basically you just continue on with the process don't worry about the part that says wait or error.
You will get the updated installer direct from swype website.

Hulu Plus not supported on Skyrocket...WAHT!

Not that I would pay for Hulu, but I watch their free content sometimes. This is a travesty.
yea I noticed this yesterday too...disappointing.
HULU works on the skyrocket........
just use one of the deodexed roms(like this one-- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1341616), which will let you edit the libs of the Flashplayer. use the Libflashplayer.so hack that is on xda replace it and give it the proper premission and BAM!!!! you got hulu

I know that but what I consider stock is a ROM that hasn't been messed with at all.
I normally run Cyanogen Mod 7 but it's not available yet.
No, I don't like the crap bloatware apps.
Thing is, I will not die without Hulu and it's not enough reason for me to grab the first thing that comes along and install it.
I am actually enjoying the stock rom on this phone. Can't do everything I am used to but, I have to say that it's been pretty nice.
I will likely consider Cyanogen when it comes out for this phone but I am going to have to think pretty hard at this point. That rom has caused nothing but issues for me on multiple phones in regards to GPS which I rely on quite a bit. I know there are fixes and I got my GPS working after a lot of hassle on my Evo but never had success fixing it on my Inspire. Been nice having my GPS working without an issue on my Skyrocket. So... At this point, I just don't want to mess with the stock rom until I have a chance to evaluate it more.
My phone is rooted and that seemed to be all I needed to edit the needed files in the past but I guess not in this case.
Didn't Hulu come out recently and say they are supporting all Android devices now or was that Netflix?

I agree the Stock rom on the SR is great thats why im not even worried about not having 5 or 6 roms to choose from. i thinks its pretty nice as is. but i like to be able to edit certain files. and i think all you need it root explorer and you CAN edit pretty much everything on the phone.
but i didnt notice that you cant edit the build.prop, or the libs. i had to pull the build prop and edit on my comp and push it back.
and CM7 is a buggy nice little rom one of those things were you deal with the problems cuz its so damn nice. same with miui.

What did you change in the build.prop? The manufacturer, the model screen settings? I have done this on multiple devices including my Honeycomb tablet. My HoneyComb tablet (Acer A100) is running stock rom and I know I was able to edit the build.prop on that just using ES Explorer.
Let me know what to change and I will give it a whack, after backing up the build.prop file and making a nandroid

may i ask what files you are seeing in the Lib folder on the com.adaobe.flashplayer.
you shouuld have four files in there already right? i have seen it where it is empty sometimes and that means this wont work. ALSO if you unistall flash and reinstall flash 11 it repopulate the lib folder and i have had luck with this as well. once you get it will stick though. you wont have to this every reboot or anything.

thats the Internal SD....you have to go through Data/Data/Com.adobeflashplayer.lib/Lib<<<<you will find it in there.
but i believe you have to be on a DEODEXED rom....not the stock unless you know how to pull a lib file from the phone extract and edit. then push it back(this meathod is harder)

You also need root access. I used root explorer (from the market) to access the appropriate folder on my phone.

this is true, but even with root on the stock rom(odexed) i dont think you can edit the lib files.
im pretty sure.

[Q] Disabling OTA Update Notifications? [Editing build.prop line to FP5 bricks phone]

Hello all,
Anybody know how to disable the annoying OTA update notification on the Droid Charge? I've looked at a few guides, and most say to edit the ro.build.fingerpint line in build.prop from FP1 to FP5 [although I inferred this, as the guides I found had them updating from the prev version to FP1]. I've tried this twice and it bricked my phone both times.
I've also tried renaming the otacerts.zip to otacerts.zip.bak [in the system/etc/security directory] but this does not work as well.
I've not been able to find an .apk in the system/apps directory that looks like it's the OTA updater, and obviously don't want to just randomly rename anything in there via trial-and-error as it takes WAY too long to reflash the phone each time I brick it. [I bricked it HARD the first time around. ]
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. The notification pops up constantly and is like Chinese water torture at this point.
Thanks in advance!
-Sootah
What are you using to edit the build.prop? ES File Explorer screws up the file.
1. Download ROM toolbox lite (no pay)
2. Swipe right to performance tab
3. Tap build.prop editor
4. Tap ro.build.fingerprint
5. Change FP1 to FP5
6. Hit save
7. Reboot
If you are running Tweaked 2.2 or Eclipse 2.0. It can be as easy as flashing a zip. Check out my thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1831944

See my previous post or do that .zip, although that will put you on stock build.prop which takes away some tweaks from tweaked.

This thread is likely dead, but for the record, this did not work for me. I still got an OTA notification. Out of morbid curiosity, I backed up everything then accepted the OTA which failed. Rebooted back to Tweaked 3.2. Promptly got another update notification. I am going to try to ignore them for two weeks (per an earlier post to this thread) and see if they go away.
don't know why you bricked but I believe FP8 is the latest, not FP5.

Yeah, I knew that and changed it from FP5 to FP8. I would have been pumped for such a simple solution but alas! If in two weeks the OTA prompts have not stopped I will be back looking for more answers. Right now I have a few other rabit-holes to fall into. Thanks!

Thanks! I checked out that post and it spells it out really well. Instead of flashing the .zip I chose method 2 and used Rom Toolbox to modify the build.prop file. Interestingly I am certain this is the what the OP+1 was aiming to have happen with his steps it just didn't work for me. Same app different way to accomplish the same task. Go figure!

Hey there I don't know if you still need this, but here goes. When I posted that in September 2012, the latest firmware was FP5. To disable the notification, you need to change it to FP8, the newest build.
