it is a HUGE inconvenience and i was wondering if it will be ever possible to play and maybe even record hd movies on the NS? if not, i am really considering to go back to the captivate
Moboplayer? I use that for all my movies in random formats. Haven't tried HD movies yet however. Nexus S screen resolution isn't HD anyways.

You wont be able to record at 720p it lacks the hardware
As for movies ever since 2.3.3 nexus s has been able to play 720p (x264) movies but still lack proper audio codecs so no sound hopefully more audio codecs get introduced in 2.4 update when ever that comes out but dont hold your breath
If you check in dev section there is a ROM in that includes new hardware codecs but the video player that is required is not 100%

exactly you haven't played high quality HD movies on your phone experience what we are talking about
also im pretty sure he is talking about hardware support Mobo or any other player does software only for the codecs that are not supported by the OS
And ask anyone who had or has a galaxy S image quality is outstanding
Also doesn't matter if the phone is not 720p you dont having to spend time properly converting
This is a big let down for me, its true a few media players can play via software decoding but the nexus s out the box has limited media support.

You can try the hardware multi-codec thread in the dev section. You need to flash the customized ROM though, and install ho player from Market.

I just recommend that you go back to your Captivate. I've had the Vibrant and sometimes I miss that my Nexus S doesn't have the hardware support to play other media files without converting, but I don't use it for media much so it wasn't a priority in the phone for me. Reading from your first post, it sounds like you use the phone a lot for watching media and somewhat use HD video recording. So that's why I recommend that you stay with the Captivate and perhaps wait for Galaxy S II if you're looking for an upgrade. Nothing can really beat the media capabilities that the Galaxy S offers.
What codec are you trying to play? I have HD videos on my Mac downloaded directly from YouTube. With no transcoding, they work fine on my Nexus S in the Gallery app using stock firmware.
H.264 has many different encoding profiles, and mobile devices (even the iPhone and iPad, along with scores of Android and Nokia devices) have limits on both the profile and the bit-rate that they can handle.
With regards to recording, the Nexus S does not do HD recording, and that's fine with me. If I want to record some video (which I do like 4-5 times a year), I'll whip out my Flip. You know why? Because recording video drains a lot of battery, and I need my Nexus S to last all day.
Is gTab capable playing 1920x1080 H.264 video?
Which player should I download?
thanks!
I've been pretty happy with mVideoPlayer. It's supposed to play .mkv's but I honestly haven't tried it. But it's played everything I've thrown at it and I like how it can download the posters for your movies and tv episodes.

A lot of people seem to like MoboPlayer. I see that it's been recently updated and the changelog says something about Tegra2. I might have to try it.

I just noticed your signature saying that you use CM7. Supposedly CM7's hardware accelerated video playback isn't quite ready for primetime yet. You might have problems playing that HD video.

Yeah, just found out it's not working.
Any of these player can play AVCHD (file extension m2t, mts, m2ts, etc)?
Thanks!

If above is true, then a conversion is required. This is unexpected when I read all the raves about the hardware specs.

What roms support HD accell?
I am also running CM7 and find the video playback wonky and was wanting to move to a ROM that supports full HW Acell for now. I assume Vegan 7 doesnt also since its based off cm7? Does HC have any HW acell?
Only the Froyo-based roms have HW acceleration. The Nvidia drivers are only available for Froyo at the moment. Hopefully that changes some time in the future.
Is that only a problem for gTab or other tablets? Thanks!

Just the tablets with this specific processor, the Tegra2 Harmony. There are a few out there but not many. The drivers may come out eventually, either officially or unofficially, but it might also never happen either.
There are plenty of Android tablets with newer versions of Android and hardware acceleration. They'll set you back at least $400 though.

Yeah I may go with stock 4349 for now because it seems the only ROM (ok not a ROM but u know what I mean) that supports Netflix, Hardware Accel, and Flash.
It seems vegan 5.1.1 doesnt support netflix.
I just got my gTablet last week and after playing around with the stock software, I installed TnT lite 4.4 as well as Cyanogenmod 7. I've settled for now on CM7 for several reasons, but there are a few quirks I'm hoping will get worked out soon.
The most annoying of these quirks is the video issue. From reading I understand that CM7 has some issues with hardware acceleration and the 2.2 Froyo based ROMS should be better in this aspect - but when I used TnT lite 4.4, which was Froyo based it still had the exact same issues, even using the latest rockplayer. Why is it that the stock ROM could run HD videos so well, but not TnT lite 4.4?
My advice to you guys would be to try Brilliant Corners by roebeet. I can't link you to it but Google is your friend.
Anyone else notice slow fps while gaming on Gameloft games? I'm not talking network lag, what I'm talking about is slow frames per second. My HTC Rezound runs the games so much smoother. Doesn't make sense since the Xoom hardware shouldn't have a problem handling these games. Any ideas?

Is yours a stock Xoom or are you running a ROM that is OC'd? When I had my Xoom before it was stolen :crying: I overclocked it and noticed games actually got lag being overclocked. Returning back to stock speeds got rid of all my lag, I had this problem with video playback too. Not sure if anyone else had that problem.
I bet it's the ****ty gameloft games, they usually have so much issues that I rather not even touch it. Though what fluke said is also true.
Xoom, rooted and flash with team eos latest wingray, after installing Street Fighter IV, the game can boot up, but when playing the solo mission, the background is white, and after few seconds, the game will shut down.
Installing Chain3d on EOS wingray rom, will mess up your xoom, it will go into brick mode. Please dont install it... i already twice, both go into brick mode, need to reflash back..
i am too kinda dissapointed with my new xoom. even my xperia play runs games better :/
You know, i'm supposed to love all android things, i love my smartphone, but with tablets, i have an xoom that traumatized me because issues, i don't buy any other tablet because that, i don't know if it's only with me or i'm doing something wrong.
The true is that the xoom have a problem, a problem specially with the screen, i don't know, it's not lag, looks like it is but i think is not, for my knowledge on the subject it's with screen refresh frequency that it's not high, is that why you see pixelated movement of screen objects when you do a slowly fast swipe.
It's like the image of icons don't move in the same time and broke the transition, i want to know if that is a hardware issue, is that why xoom have that problem, or it's because Tegra 2 can't handle xoom? I don't want flame, i love my xoom, really but i want to resolve that problem, it's annoying me, i have an iPad 1 with single core 1ghz, xoom is dual core 1ghz with 1 gb, my iPad have 256 and you don't have that problem. Can someone help or explain that for me?
Sorry, my English, i'm Japanese.
I don't have this problem with mine, maybe your ROM is too cluttered. The info you passed is not enough to specify your problem, can you provide some more system info ?

I'm Running Stock 4.0.4 Icecream Sandwich, all stock, i already use CM10.1 and EOS 4.2.2. What i want to say is that my xoom is not fancy on transition and all xoom that i saw is that way too, i have a Galaxy SIII, i know it's a quad-core actually processor but i'm still compare, i haven't lag, it's like the transition it's not fancy, it's smooth but not fancy, it's like play video game on LCD/LED TV, LED have problems with refresh response that make HDMI Video Games not smooth, that's why i said about screen refreshs.
Also i got an Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 in my hands on Store and compared with my xoom display, i will say again, it's not lag or slight lag, it's about the things moving on the screen, you see the trail if i can call it in that way.
I will make a video to show you what i'm talking about.

Hum... But you mean only in the launcher you find the "lag"? The stock launcher has some problems, I'm running EOS 4, with Nova launcher (one screen) and my Xoom is blazing fast, it's not a Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 neither a S3, but it's working well. Try changing the launcher, installing the ROM again and changing the launcher. Mine is quite fast, however I have a friend whose isn't as fast as mine because of the settings

As i said, yeah i know, stock launcher have some lag, but it's not about lag, as an example, what a video with a lot of fast footage, if you see on xoom, on PC and on a OLED TV like i have here, TV is the best way followed by PC, but on xoom i have headache seeing fast movements, you see the trace you know, it's not like instant, as i said i will make a video.
What's your ROM?
Okay, I will wait for your video to help I understand more your problem . I'm using EOS 4 on my Xoom (MZ601)

So a long time ago, i just got my camera today! AAAAAAAAAnnnnnndddd.... here is the vĂdeo :silly::silly::silly::silly::silly:
It's not a review and not so long, it just show the xoom screen besides others. I advise you to watch on youtube in 720p!
You have a good pronunciation ^^.
I have an idea of how to test if it's a hardware problem. Do you have a HDMI cable? If so, try plugging on your TV and see if the trail is still there, then we can have an idea .

Oh really, really thanks, when i'm nervous i say a few words wrong (exchanging letters for anothers just like all people do when nervous) XD due to my shy profile, but really thanks, i'm doing videos in english and writing in english just to learn more and more. :victory:
So, about HDMI, yes i have it, but i need to search it, i will try to find and get that working to see, really thanks for support and your attention.
The bad news, if it is hardware, i'm lost due to the warranty period which is over hehe, but thanks again pal! :highfive:
I have 601 32GB 3G and I am very satisfied himself with the new rom 4.2.2

i don't have the same problem like yours. maybe because of your hardware

You are using 4.2.2 from CM?
The real problem with the Xoom is that tegra 2 is one of the worst Soc's ever made ..
In Benchmarks tegra 2 is close to OMAP4430 , but in real world most of OMAP4430 run perfectly smooth while TEGRA 2 devices can't even run the launcher smooth .

I have had a combination of Custom Roms and Software that brought the Xoom to a crawl. Currently using latest CM10.1 Nightly, Overclocked with Unified Gapps. A lean amount of Software. I have to say it runs well right now. I do wipe the system fairly often. I try not to dirty flash very often.

How that you cleaned everything? I hate the /0 partition that transform my SD card into internal memory.
You said your warranty was over, did you buy it new? and experiecning this lattely only? If so, its probably not the hardware, just try out different rom, plus maybe overclock it (as warranty is over anyway)
Hardware issue in my xoom was constant reboots and hangs, so after couple of weeks (yee weeks, I thought it was due to honeycomb) I sent coom to motorola and they fixed it on warranty...
Any way - good luck!
