Other than the stock rom most of these other roms have very tinny audio when on calls. I have noticed that the sound through the headphone jack in my car sounds ok.
I am asking the devs on here to please take a close look at this for the community.
Running cm7 with oc kernel
Amen. Praisethe10chars
I am getting frustrated beyond belief with the Inspire. I am about ready to put everything back to stock and return it.
I am running CM7, it runs great, but I can not stand the tinny call quality. I have flashed different radios, and still nothing.
Very frustrated.
I'll guess I'll hold off for now. Using a phone for work with little to no sound doesn't sound like to much fun.
I am still running stock and the sound is fine... so basically the problems are all related to shoehorned kernels. Wait till source is released in a few weeks and I am sure the problems will be resolved.

The source may not be released in just a few weeks...it could take quite longer, maybe up to 90 days. :/

Stock but rooted? I thought that left no sound

The kernel source was released yesterday by HTC, that is why you are seeing different kernels and ROMs in this forum now. I'm sure the devs are looking at this long and hard for a solution.
Ok I need more explaination on the "tiny" sound issue. Is it a volume level issue or something else. I'm familiar with fixing kernel sound issues on the captivate i can take a look at source to see what I can find but I need a better description of the issue. I'm currently still running stock do to the fact that i'm enjoying sense and haven't had the time to do the root process yet(so no sound issue for me), but I can still rummage through source and see what I can come up with.
It's almost a hollow sound for me. And I get echo of what I say through the earpiece from time to time.

Think of a combination of a low-frequency 1980's cordless phone combined with the calling experience through skype\google voice over 3G. It's a highly digitized sounding call experience, both on speakerphone and earpiece.
ok so its quality not volume. So that would probably mean radio kernel interfacing I'll look into it.

Correct, in fact, volume is GREAT, it's just the garbled\digitized sound. It'll crank plenty loud till it really distorts, so volume is good.
UPDATE: contrary to what a couple others have said, it's still distorted when using an external headphone.... not as noticable as using the phone's speaker or earpiece, but distorted more so than stock, for sure.
Thank you for looking into it for us.
Chrisryn is on the case folks. He's good. The Andromeda ROM he was on for the Captivate is what kept me from tossing it out the window.
Now we just need to get the rest of the team on Inspires. Andromeda for Inspire please?

Very cool. Thanks for looking into this. Let me know if I can be of any assistance. I am more than happy to be a guinea pig.
from what i gathered, it isn't a a kernel issue, so much as issues with the dolby information.
if 100% sound is important, use attn1s stock rooted rom. i keep a nandroid of it for when i need to use my phone as my mp3 player. otherwise, i'm running CM7.
also, jasonyump has a few audio fix tests for people to try.

I'm still looking for this answer: If I use this "stock ATT ROM" will I lose my HSUPA or has that been enabled on THIS stock rom?
This is my number one complaint with all the custome ROMS is the "tinny" sound. Thank you so much for looking into this

Wasn't that source the Desire HD kernel source, which is different from the Inspire kernel source as far as audio goes?

I have recently rooted my Infuse and installed the most recent CM7 Gingerbread ROM. It was smooth sailing and I have been successfully using for about 1 week. I am now encountering popping and crackling noises only on my Bluetooth headset during phone calls making it unusable. This post had some similar comments - (since I cannot post links Google "Static/popping/clicking sound. - Page 2" I have searched this forum and others without finding a solution. I have tried both a Motorola and Plantronics (Voyager Pro +) with the identical problem. I do not beleive it is the BT headset. Has anyone else experience this. Any suggestions for how to troubleshoot? I tried to revert back to the original Froyo Nandroid backup but I get a "Error while flashing boot image!" error so I cannot test to see if the problem exists with Froyo as well and is just an issue with the phone itself. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
This phone rocks!!
iirc cm7 on the infuse has issues with BT, can't help you further though..
maybe you can try the normal return to stock methods?

And there is your problem.
thank you both for the response. I have returned to stock and will try when I get home tonight to see of the issue is resolved. LinuxBozo, am I to extrapolate from your comment that the version is too bleeding edge for a production phone I should try a different version and or ROM? If I so which would you suggest? I would prefer to be using gingerbread over froyo and I really like the feature in CM7. Matter of fact if was awesome aside from the Bluetooth crackling and issue with not being able to remember previously paired BT devices upon reboot.
Thank you
If you want 100%, everything working as advertised on the box, CM7 is not for you. BT is flaky, and very basic right now, with audio (headsets, a2dp) being the most broken. As for something stable, and Gingerbread, you really cant' go wrong with the latest UCKJ4 leak, as it's basically an early look at what stock gingerbread will be. Otherwise, if you want something not so stock, I would say, look at Serendipity7, Sensation or Dlev.
Great feedback. Thank you!!!
Stock rom doesnt have any issues so it was a CM7 issue.

Hey!
I have been having issues with my microphone on my LG G2X - I have it rooted, and it's running Miui - not sure what version... I have completely wiped and gone factory, but when I talk everyone can't hear me..... I bought it from a friend - who said he had problems - but it seemed to fix itself out..... Not sure what I can do.
Does anyone know how to increase the volume for a microphone? Or how to take it apart and fix it manually?

Is it related to the ROM? Or have you tried other Roms? I know that the latest Nightlies of CM7 have that issue, but the stable release of CM7 doesn't.

That really seems to depend on the phone, also. I've flashed every single nightly since the 40s, and when the 'microphone issue' started popping up I made it a point to test my mic volume to a minimum of 5 other phones every nightly....and it's never been a problem on my handset. Not once...
Not saying the problem doesn't exist, it just doesn't seem to be present on all devices..
I had the same prob on cm7 around nightly 174 or 175. Try pushing the latest stable release of cm7.. i bet it'll be all set.

I totally agree, my phone has it where as my parents' doesn't. Wonder what could be the issue.
It's a known issue on some MIUI builds, some have suggested replacing files (for example: http://forums.miuiandroid.com/showthread.php?10200-Low-mic-problem) or playing around with mute/unmute (for example: http://www.galnetmiui.co.uk/landing/forums/showthread.php/2352-Low-Microphone-Volume). I haven't experienced the problem myself on recent builds from Whitehawx.
Installed the most recent nightly Jellybean for Verizon. Seems stable but I notice what seems to be degraded sound quality on phone calls. Anyone else having that issue?
Can someone more experienced recommend a better (or preferred build)?
Thanks,

You can't expect nightly builds to be stable- they will and do have issues with various things.
The vast majority, if not every single AOSP ROM for the SGS3 uses all of (or a good chunk) of CyanogenMod's code, which is why you see so many of the same bugs between builds that are rarely fixed until someone submits to CyanogenMod's Gerrit.
I can't comment on your specific issue, just posting some food for thought.
A lot of people have posted about echoes or low volume on the CM10 builds. I don't make many phone calls so I don't know if this affects every phone running CM10. But I'm sure it does to various extents. They will work it out in the coming weeks as they work toward a stable build.

the echo seems to be gone in the 8/31 build
use this thread to ask questions about it

Preferred Build
Is there a stable build other than the nightlies? If so where would I find it?

No echo here. I just flashed to the 9/1/2012 nightly from stock.
Did you try playing with the call settings? I have noise suppression enabled and voice privacy disabled.
I actually have a similar problem (can't post on official thread yet).
I have trouble with my headset volume.
If i plug it in DURING a call, I cant hear anything and can't do anything to adjust the volume.
If i plug it in BEFORE a call, it's fine.
Any clues as to whats going on or any suggestions on how to fix it?
Paranoid android Sept 2nd build seems to work nice, i think it works better than the CM10 builds even though its based off it. You can also mess around with tablet mode!
Let's get the echo fixed and the roaming issue fixed and the forum will flock to these roms. Till then I would beware.

I just flashed CM10 09/04 nightly and I am still getting the 3 second In call delay, I am still getting echo on speaker phone and I am still getting my voice navigation only say " in a half mile" Nothing else, No one seems to even mention this in the official CM10 forms. and No its not a half mile from my house to the end of my street , its like less than 1000 ft. Everything else seems to work good but the delay and the echo are very annoying so I am going back to the build that worked best for me cm10 08/22

Same results here for 904. The other forum mentions that an unofficial build has the incoming call delay fixed, though, so I'm hoping the fix shows up when the official 905 ROM comes out.
Headphones with mic not working
I'm running the 9/2 build and when I plug the stock headphones with mic into the phone I cannot talk or hear phone calls through it. No issue with music. Screen flickers when using keyboard (Swiftkey). Volume control in call doesn't seem to work. There is also a 5 second delay when I answer a call to when I can hear the other person or they can hear me. Same delay with speaker phone.
At least the damn echo is gone though :good:
Can anyone confirm whether or not the dock audio is working on recent CM10 builds? I've tried searching the thread and have done everything short of just flashing it to see.
Thanks for your replies!
The dock audio was still not working for me on the CM10 from 9/5.

You are correct. Just tried it myself. This is the main thing holding me back from CM10. I'm going to attempt to add it in myself. We'll see what happens.
9/5 build seems to be very solid. No data issues or call issues. Cannot comment o no the dock audio though. Make sure you aren't doing dirty flashes, there have been tons of issues with dirty flashing.

This is why I switched to ParanoidAndroid. It is Jellybean and far more stable than the current CM10. If you want Jellybean right now~ I highly recommend PA. If you really like CM, still, try PA~ it will help you wait for the official CM10 release. I actually don't see a need to go CM10 tbh. PA is wonderful.

Hey Everyone,
I was wondering if anyone found a workaround to this issue in regards to cm7/9/10 based roms?
I flashed almost every combination of rom and kernel the last 4 days, and while i love flashing new stuff, i'm about to throw my phone out the window.
Here's what I've noticed. The march 2012 baseband with newer cm7 nightlies to help a bit but its still no where comparable to stock rom/kernel, not to mention bluetooth issues with the new baseband.
Singh-ui (cm7 based) lists in the change log a mic gain fix which seems to work decently well.
I'm guessing there are no apps out there to boost mic gain? I tried looking around but nothing. Anyone one else with any observations to add?
They only thing i can add is ive flashed damm near every rom/kernel amd have never experienced such issues. Ever. Same baseband as you. Very odd.

Interesting, for me on old bb, people had a hard time hearing me, on new one people can hear me but it picks up bg noise really bad. I recently bought a pair of headphones with a mic, Skull candy brand, and the person who I have a really bad time with raves about the new clarity with the head phone/mic combo.
Edit for what it's worth I am I'm temansk (if I spelled it right) cm7 w/ faux 52.
