Getting a Chinese Android mobile - General Questions and Answers

Hello XDA users
I am thinking in buying one of those cheap chineses mobile, not as a primary phone (I have a Sensation for that), but to start playing rooms, testing apps, give my son to play, and this kind of things you do not want to do with your real phone
Nevertheless, I want something decent, and something I can put Gingerbread on
Does anybody has experience with those phones ?
so far I have found interesting :
ZTE U880 3.5
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/zte-u8...2-single-sim-quad-network-w-wifi-white-101741
806MHz, 3G, 512Mb Ram and Rom, 5MP
Star A3
http://www.iosen.com/4-android-2-3-...tive-screen-star-a3-smartphone-cellphone.html
MKT6573, DualSIM, 512Mb Ram and Rom,
the first one looks Harware wise, better phone, but it has Froyo instead of Gingerbread, is any way to upgrade ?
otherwise, any advices with those chineses devices ?

Be carful especially being made in China and coming from china, alot of Chinese company's are scams and products are cheap, the phone looks like a knock off HTC phone, if your going to spend that much money you might as well buy a prepaid HTC wildfire s (I have nothing against Chinese people) but alot of Chinese web sites that sell to the u.s.a you might not even get your phone, goodluck
NookColor Cyanogenmod 7.1 "Overclocked"

ZTE's gear isn't stellar, but it is miles ahead of the 'no-name "dual-core" resistive touch' specials you see on eBay.
Telstra (Australia) sell a lot of ZTE gear, branded as their own. You aren't going to get a smoking hot device but, from the couple I've witnessed, build quality is okay and software is good, as they generally leave Android 'vanilla'.
Good luck!

yes, I know I am not going to get a state of art (I have the sensation for that), but I am looking something it would work
ZTE's limitation, I see is Froyo, and I see no posts around of Gingerbread for this device.
What you mean by vanilla android ?, wouldn't that be the best option to have ?

...is there a very nice phone..not very chip..but with a good hardware...look for "ezio t91" or "t9199+"... on a famous auction websites you can find.. eziot91

Correct. Vanilla Android is a good thing, as it means there's no performance loss due to a manufacturer launcher/skin.
I've used the ZTE Blade and the Telstra SmartTouch (unsure what ZTE model it is). Both Froyo, but both serviceable little phones. I think there's GB for the Blade now, though

be carefull about warranty outside there country.

I can share a few tips:
1. Chinese phones have very weak batteries - thay tend to decrease in capacity very fast.
2. Screens are made of cheap materials and are not very scrach proof.
3. When you see something labeled as OEM it means that his is a noname knockoff and they are the worst, as there is no company with its brand responsible for it.
4. Internal build quality is bad. Sometimes phone already arrives and needs to be resoldered for it to work.
Imagine - new LCD assembly for Galaxy S costs more than your new Chinese phone

Chinese devices
Hi All,
I already got a number of Chinese devices, including tablets and phones, all were excellent:
ainol novo 7 advanced, ainol novo 7 elf, ainol novo 7 aurora (16 Gb),
Star x18i,
And now I await the arrival of my new device, the X310e (mt6575),
I can tell you that my knock-off "Star x18i" is much better than the original "samsung galaxy ace" I got from work,
There are many high quality "original" products manufactured in China, and there are many high quality "knock-off" produced manufactured in China,
Most of the Chinese products I tried were excellent,
It's all a function of value for money, my "ainol novo 7 aurora" is better and faster at everything when I compared it to an original product like "samsung galaxy tab p7510" that my friend has (It costs five times the price), he creamed it... in every parameter we tested.

ZTE U880 is cheaper but not very good

Try HUAWEI Ascend G300(U8818)
I suggest you have a look at HUAWEI Ascend G300(U8818)
Its a 4'' WCDMA 3G mobile from HUAWEI. Running android2.3
CPU:Snapdragon MSM7227A 1GHz 800*480 screen
5.0MP Camera with Flash LED
4GB ROM +512RAM
The most important is: the price no more than $200.
But most of the 3G phones has the same problem with battery.
HUAWEI G300 just has a 1350mAh battery. So, you need to buy a extend battery or power bank.

If you do buy a power bank get the anker brand, I just bought one last week and its great

Say D Quad 5 times really fast....
Other than the name it's looking very solid, can't wait.
Amit which website do you shop from?
Solid phone would be Meizu M9. Excellent build for price. If your looking to spend less then all ZTE are good for their price,Blade especially.

Hi
Most of what I got I bought from : http://www.merimobiles.com
I can not say they were always the cheapest, but everything arrived from them very quickly and well packaged,
I think their online service is better than most sites (when you ask something, you actually get an answer)
And most importantly, if they do not have the item in stock they will not let you pay,
Other sites take the money and then say "oops sorry....do you want something else instead"
Amit

Thanks alot,I've been interested in ainol products, the price is right,I'll give it a try.
EDIT:They appear to charge a premium, especially on newer products. Anyway,if it's true they don't take money if it's out of stock then I'll bookmark them. Thanks again Amit.

Merimobiles is good. But as far as i know there is also a webstore ww.365gate.com also has a good service. Seems it is a specially B2C webstore.

The ZTE Blade is a crappy phone. 2 days of jusing and i put it in my trash its very slow an batterylife is more than bad.

Should have taken time to root it and optimize the battery life. If you still can pull it out of the can that is.

This is true for certain products,
but, I ordered the same product (N7aurora-16Gb) from two different sites (It was out of stock for a few days at Merimobiles and a friend was driving me nuts to help him buy one)
I ordered from another site (It was the first time I bought them and I was worried about paying lots of money before I know what kind of service they have, so I just bought one for my friend),
A week later it was back in stock at Merimobiles, so I ordered one for me from them,
I paid Merimobiles $ 12 more for the same product and the same method of delivery,
It might sound stupid to do so, but...
My tracking number was valid, and they bundled everything I ordered in one strong package that protected it,
But the Punch Line was that my tablet arrived a week faster in perfect condition,
To see how my friend's package looked like when it finally arrived after 40 days check the attachment,
And after that as the expression goes "I say no more..."

which Android to buy kindly advise

hi
Hi sorry if this is the wrong place to as this question but kindly advise
im planning to buy anew Android phone preferably a HTC(no offense to other brands its just the feeling that a known devil is better than an unknown angel that's all i have been using HTC for around 2yrs and absolutely no problem till date)
i was looking at the tatoo but it seems to be same as my jade with android but it seems to be the only affordable for me so can any one kindly advise on which one to buy
i would have been really happy if i could get android os for my jade but it seems to be an impossibility as of now and my crazy itch to buy anew phone and a android is kinda taking over(the wife is gona kik my A**)
Well, if I Were to make a speculation without being biased.. I would say Flash 10 is coming soon enough and according to Adobe the only 2 android phones strong enough to run the full package are the Nexus and the Moto Droid. All the other models (HTC etc.) are running flash light which is a half baked memory hog.. 'but it works'.
Also, 99% of the applications/mods I have seen are working on the Droid or compiled specifically for the droid.
In the case of you being a 'I dont want to or need to root' person I would say simply... If your going to build a computer.. would you build a 486 or a pentium 3 OR would you build something that will at the least run the current existing and immediate next gen software?
Hope Ive helped you out.

If the OP wants HTC, why not the Desire? Aiui HTC make both the Nexus for Google & the Desire under their own brand; the two are virtually identical wrt hardware, with the Desire being described by some as the Nexus with HTC's Sense ui added. OTOH the Nexus might get more timely updates than HTC's phones.

Except that 2.1 will be released in september.
I would advise not to get the Nexus One. The Nexus One has broken multi-touch (because of the sensor that it uses), poor build quality (touchscreen messing up, weird tint on the touchscreen, paint chipping off, etc), and is showing its age already in the USA.
The HTC devices may have flash lite now (I'm talking about the ones that have HTC SENSE) but they are upgradeable to the latest full flash 10.1 once it comes out.
I would go with the HTC Desire or HTC Legend for now but in the USA T-Mobile USA will release the MyTouch Slide (made my HTC) and it will have the same specs as the Nexus One except it will have a 600 mhz processor versus a 1 ghz processor but it has an external keyboard. If you want that, then you can buy it unlocked.

hi
thanks to all who have been kind enough to reply
but looks like all the phones u have advised on are currently too costly in my country(India) around 400 -500$ roughly its kinda costly for me so i have no other option to may be wait for some time till they do come down in price and it does happen all new phones come down on price in about 3-6 months of their intro but thanks guys it was very very nice of you to give me ur kind advise but i dont know why but if i buy i think it would mostly be a HTC brand some how im very happy with my experience with this brand
thanks again guys so nice of you to give me such nice advise
Simple choice...
HTC Desire. IMHO.
I ordered a SIM free HTC Tattoo today. I have 8 months left on my current 18 month contract with my SE W995 which does pretty much most of what I need however I wanted a phone I could use Spotify on and maybe a few other apps. I was torn between the iPhone (yes I know...) and the HTC Desire, both of which I would need to buy SIM free for £400-£450 but in the end I opted for the HTC Tattoo which while limited in specs compared to my other options it'll still do every thing I need from at at only £180! I may get a new phone when my contract ends, but for now I wanted something inexpensive.
would it cost too much to invest in the Motorola Milestone?
thats the out-of-the-US counterpart to the Droid. same hardware but running Android 2.0.1
just throwing that out there.
also, I'm sure you could find a MyTouch or another htc smartphone on eBay for quite cheap.

You know... good phones are bound to be expensive ...
I'm in a country with similar situation as yours (billions of people!) and I can fully understand the pain you are suffering: want to buy a fair device with reasonable prices.
HTC phones are not cheap at all. Try find a Italian version Dream in gray market. It it old and not fully-functioned like these mentioned above, but its price is also cheaper:250USD in my country with much of the playable features.
Sorry for my poor English. I'm not a native.

Actually, these days, it seems that everything anyone wants to do or figure out has been done before.
There is always a way around something.
Proxies, budgets, wants/needs. I'm pretty sure you could get an unlocked iPhone 3G and run Android on it (via OpeniBoot) or go with an unlocked T-Mobile G1. I'd definitely give you any spare android-running phone I had if I had an extra..... I'm sticking to the droid for as long as I can.
Also, try googling around or asking in Yahoo Answers- I'm pretty sure there's someone out there who is a non-horder who just happens to have a spare Android phone. Sorry for your luck My problem is that I can't use my awesome Droid outside of the U.S. (hence why I mentioned the Motorola Milestone, as that would really come in handy for me)

In China... looking to pick up a cheap, hackable Android phone - suggestions?

Hi All,
I'm in China for a couple weeks, and I'm going to head over to the electronics market within the next couple of weeks. There are plenty of good deals on unlocked android phones, most with custom chinese ROMs that really won't suit me back in the states. I'm looking for one that I can get, stick android stock 2.2 / 2.3 on, and have as a pretty good unlocked phone back in the USA. Any suggestions? Thanks!

AWESOME! Any idea how cheap I can get this guy? I'm going to Zongguanchun in Beijing later this week, and i'm hoping to negotiate a deal.
Hmm looked up the specs on that one... if i can get this thing REALLY cheap, then that's fine... but i'd hope for a bit better than the low-res screen and 500 mhz CPU. But then again, I did say cheap... so if I can get this CHEAP, i'll pick it up!
i think about 100 ~ 200 $us
i have it and the low resolution of the screen is not too bad, and the touch is resistive.. so great... the LG Optimus i cant remember the model has de same price but the screen is resistive...
The phone (huawei) is very fast and responsive... Or just see if huawei u8220 looks good for you, but it has android 1.5..
rom will be ok for every rom have english.zte and huawei is well

Jiayu G2 - Dual SIM, 1GHz CPU, 1GB RAM, 4.0-inch IPS screen, ICS

Hi! I just ordered the Chinese smartphone Jiayu G2 from an online store. It is dual SIM, 1 GHZ MT6575 CPU, 1 GB RAM, 4 GB ROM, 4.0 IPS screen, dual cameras with 8.0 megapixel rear camera, and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Look at the full specs here: http://www.chinaphonereview.com/jiayu-g2
I bought the phone because it has good specs and the price is only $169.99. I'm still waiting for it to be shipped though. I would like to know your opinions about this phone and if there are people who have tried this phone already. It would be nice to have some type of support for the Jiayu G2 in this forum.
Chinese phone usually aren't supported in this forum just because of the fact that most people here by brand name products. It looks like a great device based on specs. Give us your thoughts when you get it.

I received this phone from China last week, I am using it to run a business app, all is well, good screen and great to have more memory than on some other phones.
Testing Wifi printing, again no problems, only issue I have is with the Bluetooth and sending large data packets.
Another point I am not using this as a phone so can't comment on that.
But overall I am very impressed with the quality and service provided.

By the way, is your phone's firmware updated? There's an update for Jiayu G2's firmware at their official website www.ejiayu.com dated May 24, 2012. But you need to translate their website from Chinese to English with Google Translate.

Huawei is a more established Chinese brand, so it is much more expensive than the other Chinese phones. But I think Jiayu has a lot of potential reaching the international market because it has its own factory with a research and development department. It also has its own website with support for its products.

Hello,
In the about phone tab I have this
Android Version is 4.0.3
Kernel Version : 3.0.13
I just checked the search for updates and it said there was one from 27th June.
When you say firmware is that the same as the kernal version ?

I'm not really sure. I think firmware and kernel are different things. Can someone help us here?
Did you update your phone already? Has your Kernel Version changed?
kernel and firmware are two different thing.
kernel is core component of the operating system (Android) that does the communication with the hardware.

I disagree. Jiayu G2 looks more like Galaxy SII. Meizu M9 costs around $260 from the link that you provided. It's $100 dollars more expensive than Jiayu G2. That's a big difference and Jiayu G2 has much better specs. So Jiayu G2 is clearly worth buying.
I just received my Jiayu G2 today. My initial impression of it is very good. The navigation is very smooth, no lags. The IPS screen is clear even when viewing at angles or at direct sunlight. Tried WiFi connection and it browses the internet fast. The camera is better than I expected it to be. Images captured were clear. The phone is certainly worth it. I'm loving my new phone already.

Huawei Ascend P1 - What do you think?

Don't want the biggest screen, nor the most expensive phone. But this one looks pretty mint:

There are no threads regarding this phone on the forum yet, which kind of scares me. If no one is going go get it, there might be no custom roms etc.
Anyone tried it yet? The specs looks descent.Good phone for the money, or just a cheap alternative?
Cheers

I also like it.
But for this price (about 400 EUR) I would 100% prefer to buy a GS2 (now it's possible to find it even <400 EUR) which has similar specs and great support by XDA community.
IMHO, Huawei should drop the price to 300 EUR if they really want to sell units, at least in the European market.

Yeah, think I will get GS2 too.
One more thing is that the Huawei "support" seems very poor. Decentralization information. Hard to get in touch with their support people. Ex. I still have got no answear on whether P1 will get Jelly Bean or not (asked through mail). And I believe no one else but themselves know the answear of that question at this moment. Which leads to one more reason not to buy it.
It has potential, but I have to say that Huawei as a phone producing brand, don't seem very legit. I know they are big worldwide, producing lots of stuff used buy operators etc. But thats it. Seems like they don't spend to much energy (or lets say money) satisfying their customers, and building their brand.

Looks neat.
Not bad at all.
Great phone by looking at pics/specs. BUT!
In the UK at least, it is priced similar to the HTC One S in not a bit higher. These two devices appear to be very similarly spec'd. with the Ascend P1 being a bit shorter/narrower and, perhaps, visually more appealing (that's subjective, of course)
From what I've read - I understand, the P1 DOES have a microSDHC slot for memory expansion - the HTC One S does not.
Yet Ascend P1 doesn't even have its own forum yet and it's been out for a few months now. The One S is very well supported by developers on the other hand.
Bottom line - unless Huawei drop the price significantly - i.e HTC One S goes for GBP 260-280 (Euro 300-320 ?) on ebay right now - and the P1 should be with at least a 50 euro discount to that - Huawei are not going to sell a lot of these, which in turn, means less developer attention, etc...
how to know Getting , ask service ?

ask service online?
I've got a Huawei Ascend P1 and apart from the low internal memory, it is just a great phone: slim, quick, very responsive, good quality camera
---------- Post added at 11:58 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:45 PM ----------
... and actually you can solve the internal memory issue (once and if you get there) by using an app like mounts2sd. I still have to figure out how, but I know it is possible!

For me this my first android smartphone.
Works very well, I love it.
I hope the battery will be good for a long time, because it isn't user replaceable.

What do you guys think of the MI-TWO?

What do you guys think of the MI-TWO? for only $313 dollars OFF contract, it's amazing, and 2gb ram+Qualcomm Snapdragon Pro Quad-core, its a bargain. what do you guys think?
I would like to order, but how? It is only available in china as I know.

I dunno, I think it's releasing in October, and I will sent someone to China to get it for me! Lucky me.

It looks really good. I have held off on getting a new phone since my contract expired as there is nothing out there that does everything I want, but this might just be the phone for me.
Quad-Core, large screen (+ high resolution), Add-on Micro SD-Card slot, looks like removable battery as well, so can upgrade to the 3000mAh one for longer life.
There has to be a catch somewhere ...
Looks freaking insane, but I dont like MIUI that much :/

Not only removable but from the article I read this morning the 3000mAh is going to cost you a whole 2mm in thickness.
This phone looks amazing, can't wait to see if it's obtainable in the US and if it gets any momentum going. I'd expect a lot of prepaid folks to give this a hard look for what looks to be the best bang for your buck ever.

It would be veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery nice!
Hate to say it but this phone will not get a big following anywhere outside of china for many reasons. Some being that these types of china knock offs tend not to have the hardware that is advertised, no real warranty outside of china, and normally don't run official android builds, nor have access to the market due to Google and china issues.
Might not be bad if they could get their act together but I don't see iit happening

I want but don't want to think about how much extra I will be paying to import it. It is really nice though and if I wanted to I could just use an alternate launcher. They should open up a shop in the states xD.

One look at the phone and UI and you will see why that won't happen. They keep it in china due to the lack of copyright laws.

Well china does have copyright laws. It's either just not enforced at all or it favors companies in the country.
Also as a reply to your previous post, this company is supported by Qualcomm directly (or at least so I read on Engadget). And since it is running MIUI, it also has full access to the Play Store and will get updates since it just updates whenever MIUI gets updated. Warranty probably won't work but I tend to try to not damage my products and keep them safe. If there are manufacturing issues, well that's my fault for not researching the product more before I bought it.

Just because it has MIUI (which is not something I would brag about lol) doesn't mean it will have the market. If it looks good to you then by all means give it a shot. Good luck just don't expect it to find a home here.

*sigh, you definitely haven't used MIUI, or any product by Xiaomi. They are TRUSTED. Go ask those who uses the Mi-One, they are the most satisfied bunch of all smartphone Enthusiasts. Why? They don't get updates not every six months, but every Friday! And trust me, they DID NOT make up the hardware specs. Its either that you're racists towards Chinese companies, or just a unlucky customer who bought a fake product.
Xxx oops! accidentally beamed from my awesome NEXUS S! xxX
First off I am not racist to anything at all. I give everyone a fair shake. As for MIUI your right I have never used it and never will. I don't support what they did.
As for the hardware specs I am not aging they made them up. Just stating what many have seen with buying knock off devices. If this device hardware is legit cool and I am sure people will be happy with it.

Xiaomi MI-2 - kind of future for Android Smartphones- ...
All the hardware of the Xiaomi MI-2 is surprising, especially for the 1999 Yuan chinese price...
For sure, the lack of a memory card slot is annoying, but it is the choice of Google too, inside all the Nexus models.
Now if people could write an authentic JB ROM in order to replace the miui "iOS like" ROM, and if the international price could be really low, I would be inclined to replace my Nexus
Xiaomi 2
Xiaomi 2 is nice between my and my girl we have the last two previous models....her service provider in china will give the phone free when she signs a new contract and I will be trading her a JM phone for it.
