I just got off the phone with tmobile asking about the free wifi feature and they cleared up my confusion. They told me yes its free for users who don't have the features on there phones already. Us g2x users had that feature already so it was free for us to use. The actual mins are still taken away from our account as usual. But nights and weekend are free like normal contacts. You just get faster internet and clearer calls because your using your own wifi which is faster.

wrong, i had tmobile earlier today add the unlimited wifi calling feature and now whatever minutes i use when im on wifi dont come off my bucket of 1500 anytime minutes. i checked my usage online and it shows as "hot spot minutes" and it says I have unlimited.

i called tmobile customer care, all i said was "i wanna add the unlimited wifi calling feature, i have a g2x" all the did was ask me an "e-911 address" and that was it..
Brand new as of today. I just got off the phone. You have to be on one of the current plans, my My Faves didn't qualify, and I would have to change plans. Bummer!

Thats a bummer since i have myfavs. I guess i'll try anyways and see what happens.
wait.. are they charging to add the unlimited free wifi? They did somthing similar years ago with the first UMA blackberry on tmo. They called it @Home calling. it was 10 bucks a month and it allowed you unlimited wifi calling without using minutes.. The good part about it back then was if you made a call on wifi and went out of range it handed it off to 3g without disconnect but where ever your call originated that's how it got billed. So say you make a call on wifi and then go out of range and it switches to 3g it will still use wifi minutes because the call originated on wifi.. but same goes true for the other way. If you were on 3g and it switches to wifi then you still get minutes deducted. the tmo rep told me that when I signed up.. He was like "so if you know you're going to be on the phone for a really long time pop into a starbucks, get a uma connection, make the call and then leave. then you can talk when it switches back to 3g for free)
not sure if this is how they will do it this next time.. but that's how it worked the first time they tried this service
It's a free feature, i don't know if ill start using my minutes once the call transitions from wifi to the cell tower.

I can't find the feature in the "add services" menu on the website, has nebody had luck adding it online or is it a by-phone only thing at this point?
also I believe I had read that there would be a text from T-Mobile announcing the change but I haven't gotten that text, has nebody else?

I just called T-Mobile and was told it still deducts from your plan minutes.
So what's the point.

I just called 4 times and spoke to 4 diffrent reps and they all told me NO its not free. Technically its free for us because our phones have the feature on the phone but the minutes are used like normal minutes. Nights and weekends free but peak hours are still taken away from your minutes. You will get better call quality and faster web using the wifi. All the reps wanted to activate this $10 charge but I just told them Im gonna pass. I didnt tell them Im using the service already through my G2X. I read the article on TMONews stating that it was free with unlimited mins but I guess they dont know about it yet. I dont know. If anyone has activated this feature with no problem can you write down the extention and name of the rep you spoke to so I can call them directly. Thanks

this isnt uma(which can handoff between celltowers and wifi) if you walk out of range your call will drop
NOTE: You have to call T-Mobile to get the free wifi calling feature added to your account.
I called last night to add it to my current plan (1500 mins, unlim text, 5gb cap unlim data). The T-mobile service rep I spoke with spent 5 mins looking for that feature to add to my plan then found it. The last few days of wifi calling deducted mins from my plan (luckily it wasn't that much). I used the wifi calling because I thought it was free.
Wifi calling will not deduct from your airtime minutes ONLY if you call them and have it added to your plan if your plan allows it.
@ msage
I read about the text aswell. I wonder if the one guy who says had it activated got a text.

To see if you are set up for free wifi calling go to the T Mobile app "My Account"
Click "Plan" on the very bottom right of your screen.
Under Plan & Services check the Additional Services
There you should see "Free Wi-Fi Calling $0.00
If you don't see it then you are not set up for it. Just because you hear that it is free it doesn't mean its really free. Its free after you call them and set it up.
Just tried this, but I don't know if I want to give up my myFaves preferred.

Thanks. I looked there, didn't have it. Dialed 611 and had it turned on.
do i still get charged for roaming if i'm in canada and using wifi calling?
If you're on a Even More or Even More Plus plan (Postpaid) with a Wi-Fi calling capable handset, you'll have the feature of unlimited Wi-Fi calling for FREE (no deduction of minutes).
Apparently, doesn't work for grandfathered plans.
Call T-Mobile (or use Live Chat), they must add it to your line for it to work. Ask for it to be added to your line (Free Unlimited Wi-Fi calling), since it's a new feature (5/13), they might not know about it (have not been trained for it). If they don't know what you're talking about, tell them to try harder
1-800-TMOBILE
1-800-866-2453
or
Live chat [t-mobile.com]
"Currently, placing calls over Wi-Fi deducts from a customer’s in-plan minutes. Effective 5/13, a new feature will launch that will allow customers with capable phones the ability to place calls over Wi-Fi without deducting from in-plan minutes! This is not only a great value, being FREE, but can help customers who experience coverage issues in areas that Wi-Fi is available."
You should be getting a text message about it according to T-Mobile, but if you're impatient...
-A Text Message (SMS) blast is planned to target customers with Wi-Fi Calling capable device to alert the customer of the availability of this free feature.
-The SMS will direct the customer to T-Mobile.com to add the feature. However, they may call Care instead. (I'm assuming they're referring to CS)
-This new feture is available to all Even more, Even More Plus, and 4G Do More rate plans for customers with Wi-Fi Calling capable devices.
Wi-Fi Calling works for:
Calls made from the US to US numbers
Calls made from the US to international numbers (subject to international rates) <-----Note
Calls made from outside the US to US numbers (not charged roaming) <---AKA (I can be in London connected through wi-fi and can call any US number for free without a deduction from my plan minutes)
Calls made from outside the US to international numbers (subject to international rates, but not charged roaming) <-----Note
as found via slickdeals.
just added this through online chat.
i dont really use wifi calling but doesnt hurt to have it right?
I also did this through online chat today. Went very smoothly and took maybe 10 minutes total. Thanks for the tip!
i just added it to both phone.... but some of the glacier roms dont have wifi native... where would i get the add on? the agent was checking my adress to see if i qualified for it? weird, i think if you are in a well known area of coverage they might try to avoid giving it to you? maybe not////////// what eva!!!!
did this earlier (before this was posted)...went without a hitch..great to have even though i dont even use 300min a month

They have to input the address manually so that if you call 911 that the address you gave is the same one that shows up in their systems. Nothing to do with qualifying locations.

I wish I did it through chat. I called 611 and spent about 15-20 minutes on the phone explaining the press release. Not the operators fault. It's T-Mobile not alerting their customer support people of changes. A true pain in the ass.
Let's see how long it takes to activate.
just spoke to them. im on a cheaper grandfathered family plan. i do not qualify. you have to be on a current, non-grandfathered plan to get the free wifi calling.

No, grandfathered plans just needs a different code.
I just finished with them online. They weren't going to add it, saying it didn't exist. Once I quoted their own press release they came back and said yes it is possible. Added it on my phone and my wife's! I'm wondering if it is a plan to reduce traffic on their networks?

can someone please list the devices that are capable of UMA?
I spoke with chat and they, at first, didn't have any idea what I was referring to. I provided the press release to the rep and they were able to add free wifi calling to both my lines. They said it takes about 2 hours for the feature to kick in. When using it on the phone, the app will still say that minutes will be deducted however they assured me that they won't regardless.
Now I do have one question. Does this feature show up on my account under "services"?
I just called and was told that feature didn't exist. I tried tell the girl that it was new and read the release. She said that was a feature a few years ago but now it using plan minutes. I guess I'll call back and get someone else.
Way to go T-mo. Roll out a great new money saving feature and don't train your staff on it.

They call it unlimited because they don't charge per MB after you hit 5GB like other carriers do. I've been caped and it makes the phone almost worthless, but its better than paying 200$ because I went over plan.

tethering and loving it.
It may be rolling out slowly (The end of the free promo) I saw a couple of people on Android Central say after they did a restart they got a popup stating the promo was over when they tried to use it. Not sure how accurate their story is though.
I just tried tethering, told me I had to call Verizon to subscribe.
I have a friend has a charge and it tells him to call to add the service.
I just checked. I still get the free tethering promo notice when I turn it on and it still works.
Still works for me, BUT I also paid for tethering before switching to the tb, maybe it just automatically added it back and isn't telling me yet. Mom did say something about an email from verizon a few days ago saying a feature had been added to my line, even though i never changed anything. When i go on to the site to see if its there it isn't, but the new data plans are, but nothing about hotspot with the grandfathered unlimited plan, which has me worried i may have to switch to tiered to get it back.

I am in CM7 and it turned on fine for me. Although, I am not sure how it is SUPPOSE to work in CM7 once it expires.
Officially not working for me (USA, NY/NJ/CT tristate area). As soon as I try it enable "Mobile Hotspot" in the settings, automatically pops up a prompt, you have to subscribe to $30 a month tethering plan. I'm using Wireless Tether app and it still works fine though.
Still working for me, down here in Tucson AZ. Phone had originally been rooted but has been bone stock for about a week now.
Still working for me in ATL
Works fine with me on CM7 RC1.2
Even on 4G
Still works in mi

I called Verizon yesterday regarding this unlimited hotspot deal. I got a lady who tried to be very helpful and ended up talking to her supervisor. I had MHS on my account before I upgraded to the TB but was told that with the free promotion that service was terminated the day I bought the TB. I asked how to get the $30 unlimited MHS and was told it was an urban legend and wasn't being offered. He told me that I was grandfathered on the unlimited 4G but if I wanted MHS after the free promotion ended, I'd have to sign up for one of the tiered plans that had the MHS included. Otherwise I was out of luch. Obviously I declined. He said that they had received hundreds of queries about this as well and he was told to tell them all the same thing.
Since then I've read posts on other sites where they were able to sign up with verizon for the unlimited MHS but it took tenacity and determination to get the Verizon rep to figure it out.
Online in MyVerizon, there is no MHS option seperate apart from switching to a tiered deal. I'm still getting it free so I'll just wait and see for now.
In NYC, stock TB never rooted.
Still works as of 9am ET
I am with Mobilicity in Ontario which gives me unlimited local calling, text, and data when I am in one of their "unlimited zones" (major cities) but heading an hour or so out of the city I'm roaming. This doesn't pose to much of a problem for me as I live downtown and rarely leave Toronto, but I do have family and friends I visit from time to time that don't live within the "unlimited zone" which makes my phone useless to me.
From what I understand about GV and GrooveIP, it allows you to make free calls and text to anywhere in the US and Canada for free over 3G data and wifi, which is exactly what I need for when I'm not in the city. At first I thought I could use a US proxy to get a GV number then set up GrooveIP so when I am out of the unlimted zone I can still communicate over wifi using my GV number. The problem I realized is that no one I know in Canada is going to want to pay international call and text rates to reach me at a US GV number.
Is there some other free service available in Canada that allows me to send and receive texts and calls for free over wifi?

You're right! It does work. I can even make long distance calls for free now too. Are you able to receive calls through grooveip without a google voice number? When making a call do you know what your caller id looks like to the other person? I assumed that Grooveip also supported sms but I see now that it doesn't. Is there an app with the same functionality as grooveip but for sending and recieving texts over wifi

When you call people it shows the US number i believe. Also i have never tried receiving calls because the ppl who would call you in canada would get charged for calling to the states as grooveip uses a US number.

I recently just noticed a 14.99 charge on my T-mobile bill and I don't think I should be paying for a feature I've been using for free for years. Is there any app or rom (since I'm S-OFF and rooted) that I can use on my Sensation 4G instead?
It IS free (at least on this phone). Call them and ask for a refund, since you never ordered that service. Now if they ask, just tell them you don't even know what that "Hotspot" is...
WiFi Hotspot that comes preinstalled on stock ROM or ARHD should work fine. No need for any other app.
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using xda premium
In Germany the "Deutsche Telekom" mother company of T-Mobile is also marketing WiFi Hotspots in public locations under the T-Mobile brand.
Just to give another idea of what that point on your bill might refer to as the other user thinks it should be free.
However if they are really refering to the use of the Hotspot app, that will not change with using a different app for that purpose, they just bill any traffic not originating from your cellphone seperately (maybe as an additional flat fee).
At least that's what some providers in germany say in their terms about using their phone SIM for any other purpose but a mobile phone.
Also- I have been using the hotspot feature for free since June '11... Don't know if avoiding this charge is a function of my refusal to set up the 'T-Mo sync" sw that they constantly request of me. Otherwise I am up to date w all other requested android updates on my Sensation 4G. Now I finally want to sync device as they have informed me that I cannot play my first android market purchased mp3 w/o sync set-up. Q? Is my free ride a function of my non-set-up of sync? PS- I think device is rooted as they complied w my request for some such so as to be able to use device w other carriers when out of country. Afterward I paid the 200$ to go 'value plan', own phone, off contract. Thanx in advance, VecZed
