Tmobile free wifi calling - T-Mobile LG G2x

I just got off the phone with tmobile asking about the free wifi feature and they cleared up my confusion. They told me yes its free for users who don't have the features on there phones already. Us g2x users had that feature already so it was free for us to use. The actual mins are still taken away from our account as usual. But nights and weekend are free like normal contacts. You just get faster internet and clearer calls because your using your own wifi which is faster.

wrong, i had tmobile earlier today add the unlimited wifi calling feature and now whatever minutes i use when im on wifi dont come off my bucket of 1500 anytime minutes. i checked my usage online and it shows as "hot spot minutes" and it says I have unlimited.

i called tmobile customer care, all i said was "i wanna add the unlimited wifi calling feature, i have a g2x" all the did was ask me an "e-911 address" and that was it..

Brand new as of today. I just got off the phone. You have to be on one of the current plans, my My Faves didn't qualify, and I would have to change plans. Bummer!

Thats a bummer since i have myfavs. I guess i'll try anyways and see what happens.

wait.. are they charging to add the unlimited free wifi? They did somthing similar years ago with the first UMA blackberry on tmo. They called it @Home calling. it was 10 bucks a month and it allowed you unlimited wifi calling without using minutes.. The good part about it back then was if you made a call on wifi and went out of range it handed it off to 3g without disconnect but where ever your call originated that's how it got billed. So say you make a call on wifi and then go out of range and it switches to 3g it will still use wifi minutes because the call originated on wifi.. but same goes true for the other way. If you were on 3g and it switches to wifi then you still get minutes deducted. the tmo rep told me that when I signed up.. He was like "so if you know you're going to be on the phone for a really long time pop into a starbucks, get a uma connection, make the call and then leave. then you can talk when it switches back to 3g for free)
not sure if this is how they will do it this next time.. but that's how it worked the first time they tried this service

It's a free feature, i don't know if ill start using my minutes once the call transitions from wifi to the cell tower.

I can't find the feature in the "add services" menu on the website, has nebody had luck adding it online or is it a by-phone only thing at this point?
also I believe I had read that there would be a text from T-Mobile announcing the change but I haven't gotten that text, has nebody else?

I just called T-Mobile and was told it still deducts from your plan minutes.

So what's the point.

I just called 4 times and spoke to 4 diffrent reps and they all told me NO its not free. Technically its free for us because our phones have the feature on the phone but the minutes are used like normal minutes. Nights and weekends free but peak hours are still taken away from your minutes. You will get better call quality and faster web using the wifi. All the reps wanted to activate this $10 charge but I just told them Im gonna pass. I didnt tell them Im using the service already through my G2X. I read the article on TMONews stating that it was free with unlimited mins but I guess they dont know about it yet. I dont know. If anyone has activated this feature with no problem can you write down the extention and name of the rep you spoke to so I can call them directly. Thanks

this isnt uma(which can handoff between celltowers and wifi) if you walk out of range your call will drop

NOTE: You have to call T-Mobile to get the free wifi calling feature added to your account.
I called last night to add it to my current plan (1500 mins, unlim text, 5gb cap unlim data). The T-mobile service rep I spoke with spent 5 mins looking for that feature to add to my plan then found it. The last few days of wifi calling deducted mins from my plan (luckily it wasn't that much). I used the wifi calling because I thought it was free.
Wifi calling will not deduct from your airtime minutes ONLY if you call them and have it added to your plan if your plan allows it.

@ msage
I read about the text aswell. I wonder if the one guy who says had it activated got a text.

To see if you are set up for free wifi calling go to the T Mobile app "My Account"
Click "Plan" on the very bottom right of your screen.
Under Plan & Services check the Additional Services
There you should see "Free Wi-Fi Calling $0.00
If you don't see it then you are not set up for it. Just because you hear that it is free it doesn't mean its really free. Its free after you call them and set it up.

Just tried this, but I don't know if I want to give up my myFaves preferred.

T-Mobile Free Unlimited Wi-Fi Calling for Even More / EM+ Plans

If you're on a Even More or Even More Plus plan (Postpaid) with a Wi-Fi calling capable handset, you'll have the feature of unlimited Wi-Fi calling for FREE (no deduction of minutes).
Apparently, doesn't work for grandfathered plans.
Call T-Mobile (or use Live Chat), they must add it to your line for it to work. Ask for it to be added to your line (Free Unlimited Wi-Fi calling), since it's a new feature (5/13), they might not know about it (have not been trained for it). If they don't know what you're talking about, tell them to try harder
1-800-TMOBILE
1-800-866-2453
or
Live chat [t-mobile.com]
"Currently, placing calls over Wi-Fi deducts from a customer’s in-plan minutes. Effective 5/13, a new feature will launch that will allow customers with capable phones the ability to place calls over Wi-Fi without deducting from in-plan minutes! This is not only a great value, being FREE, but can help customers who experience coverage issues in areas that Wi-Fi is available."
You should be getting a text message about it according to T-Mobile, but if you're impatient...
-A Text Message (SMS) blast is planned to target customers with Wi-Fi Calling capable device to alert the customer of the availability of this free feature.
-The SMS will direct the customer to T-Mobile.com to add the feature. However, they may call Care instead. (I'm assuming they're referring to CS)
-This new feture is available to all Even more, Even More Plus, and 4G Do More rate plans for customers with Wi-Fi Calling capable devices.
Wi-Fi Calling works for:
Calls made from the US to US numbers
Calls made from the US to international numbers (subject to international rates) <-----Note
Calls made from outside the US to US numbers (not charged roaming) <---AKA (I can be in London connected through wi-fi and can call any US number for free without a deduction from my plan minutes)
Calls made from outside the US to international numbers (subject to international rates, but not charged roaming) <-----Note
as found via slickdeals.
just added this through online chat.
i dont really use wifi calling but doesnt hurt to have it right?
I also did this through online chat today. Went very smoothly and took maybe 10 minutes total. Thanks for the tip!
i just added it to both phone.... but some of the glacier roms dont have wifi native... where would i get the add on? the agent was checking my adress to see if i qualified for it? weird, i think if you are in a well known area of coverage they might try to avoid giving it to you? maybe not////////// what eva!!!!

They have to input the address manually so that if you call 911 that the address you gave is the same one that shows up in their systems. Nothing to do with qualifying locations.

I wish I did it through chat. I called 611 and spent about 15-20 minutes on the phone explaining the press release. Not the operators fault. It's T-Mobile not alerting their customer support people of changes. A true pain in the ass.
Let's see how long it takes to activate.

No, grandfathered plans just needs a different code.
I just finished with them online. They weren't going to add it, saying it didn't exist. Once I quoted their own press release they came back and said yes it is possible. Added it on my phone and my wife's! I'm wondering if it is a plan to reduce traffic on their networks?

can someone please list the devices that are capable of UMA?
I spoke with chat and they, at first, didn't have any idea what I was referring to. I provided the press release to the rep and they were able to add free wifi calling to both my lines. They said it takes about 2 hours for the feature to kick in. When using it on the phone, the app will still say that minutes will be deducted however they assured me that they won't regardless.
Now I do have one question. Does this feature show up on my account under "services"?
I just called and was told that feature didn't exist. I tried tell the girl that it was new and read the release. She said that was a feature a few years ago but now it using plan minutes. I guess I'll call back and get someone else.
Way to go T-mo. Roll out a great new money saving feature and don't train your staff on it.

They call it unlimited because they don't charge per MB after you hit 5GB like other carriers do. I've been caped and it makes the phone almost worthless, but its better than paying 200$ because I went over plan.

[recomendation] At&t Unlimited Mobile to mobile & Unlimited txt

I am not sure how many were aware of this, because I honestly wasn't.
I was stopped by one of the Att reps a kiosk in the mall, and they asked me if I had unlimited txt. I was like yeah, I don't wanna add anything to my plan. They were telling me att currently has a plan were for the same price as unlimited txt you could get unlimited mobile to mobile (any carrier), and your minutes are only used for land lines.
I am sure some of you already know about this, but for those of you who don't, it's not that bad of a deal unlimited mobile to mobile ( any carrier) and unlimited txt for 20 dollars a month.
Yea they were doing this as a free upgrade a few months ago. I saw it on there facebook page that. I don't know for sure that they are currently doing it. I got this changed a few months ago. For anyone that doesn't have it i would recommend calling ATT about it and see about getting it added.
I'm on a friends and family plan. The primary account holder added this and didn't tell me. It's definitely cheaper than going to the next level of anytime minutes!
Yea I have 4 lines my parents have 2 me friend has one and I have the other with 700 anytime min. With this we might use 100 minutes a month. With that and roll over we never go over our minutes.
But I think the unlimited mobile 2 mobile is relegated to 10 numbers you add to your account...

What you refer to is the A-list, which allows you to add 10 landline numbers that wont use your anytime minutes. What the op is referring to is the messaging add-on that allows you to call any mobile at anytime without using anytime minutes at no additional cost. It is only available with the larger plans. I got it the day it came out on family meassaging plan. This, combined with the A-list, allowed me to get rid of my landline.
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
Yea we are not talking about the a list. That's a whole different deal. As the others have explained its unlimited mobile to mobile any number on any network. I don't recall what they call it but if you explain it most reps know what your talking about. I'm sure its probably what the guys above where calling it (mobile to any mobile calling).
Same here, got the unlimited mobile to any mobile with unlimited text when I signed up in march on a single line. Now I just need to get my hands on a iPhone 2g for the unlimited data plan switch, hard to find one without buying one out here in the sticks in eastern Oregon lol.

Try looking on Craigslist. You might have to buy it but for unlimited data its worth it. Then just resell it.
I was asked this question as well when I went in to get my Inspire awhile back. It was explained to me that this is a service plan change not just some sort of promotional gimmick. Not sure if that is true but it might help us to save some minutes and, in the long run, lower the number of minutes we have to pay for each month.

You may be correct but it was just explained to me as a added feature just like txt messaging or data. I didn't have to change anything. The rep added it told me to restart my phone and it would be on there.
I have this as well. If you have "a list" and a Google voice number, you can add it to your "a list" as a land line and make all the non-mobile calls you want for free too. I've been doing the GV/a list thing for about 2 yrs.
This is the plan my family plan is using now, it's great.

I have family unlimited mobile to mobile texting and calling. My texting plan costs me $30 for three lines, and my mobile to mobile calling and texting is included in this and my normal rate plan.
Also when I switched to the inspire they prorated because they changed my plan which they didn't do this to my girlfriends account. We both had grandfathered unlimited data plans from our iPhone 2g days. I am just tired of paying $150 for 3 phone lines. It sucks, lol.
Been using this plan 2mths now. Absolutely, 100%, without a shadow of a doubt worth it..
Just dropped the phone bill about a bone ^^

This is a free feature from ATT, and is included if you have unlimited messaging on your plan. There is not restriction, any cell phone numbers in the us qualify and DO NOT use your minutes. I know this because I work for ATT. The feature is called ANY MOBILE.
For $84.99 I have unlimited data, unlimited mobile to mobile (any carrier), 450 land lline minutes and unlimited texts. I'm pretty happy with that.

Has anyone tried Wifi Calling when not having service?

By service, I don't mean signal, I mean actual phone service.
For example, you don't pay your bill for a month and t-mo suspends your service, can you still use Wifi-Calling even though the service isn't on?
Just curious.

You can use something like grooveip. It's a voip that uses GV to connect the calls. I heard it works well, I dont use it. I use csipsimple which is more complex to set up that's why I recommended groove. I am able to make/place calls over wifi. the sim in the phone is deactivated. I actually use my g2x as my house phone. it operates purely on wifi calling. But if you're asking if you can use the built in app that you use with TMO now? No, you cant

Please don't give out any false info.. It does use your minutes unless you are on the even more plus plan, which then you already have unlimited minutes so it doesn't matter. If you are on a minute plan still it WILL indeed use your minutes.
GrooveIP is actually pretty good and does its job. Tried it out and while it did give a bit of echo for the other party and a bit of delay, it is indeed free.

You should also stop giving out false info. You don't have to be on an unlimited plan, you just need the free wifi calling service added to your line by either calling to chatting with a T-Mobile rep. I have it on both my lines on my family account and it doesn't charge me for my wifi calls. It's great because we only have 750 minutes to use between us.

It does matter what plan you have. I've called and chatted several times and they said I had to upgrade to one of the newer plans to get the feature. I'm on FamilyTime 700 with free myFaves.

How to get unlimited data.

Alright guys, there is still a plan code for unlimited hotspot for our 4G phones that WILL also change your plan to unlimited data. Keep in mind some reps will NOT know this and some might have to search up the feature code. BARE WITH THEM AND DONT BE **** HEADS BECAUSE THEY WILL LOG THE ACCOUNT WITH NOTES AND YOU WILL BE OUT OF LUCK. If the rep tells you they cant do anything or cant find anything simply be polite, hang up then call back.
After you find someone who has added this plan then go to your my Verizon and remove the unlimited hotspot feature. You will be left behind with unlimited data for $30.
This is all based on the rep you speak too, it works for some and it doesnt work for others. Just be patient.

Just did this i am going to hold out and keep it for a month and see who gets busted. If people do get busted i will just keep it with my discount it is costing 24 dollars if you go over 1.001 gig it basically pays for it self on the 30 dollar double your gig plan. Hurry up i am sure that loophole will come to an end shortly.

Took a little for the app to update but it worked still says unlimited and the hotspot is indeed off. Wow lol good ****
Thanks so much! I have to have hotspot and don't want to worry about being throttled. I was paying $50 for the 6gb with hotspot. Called in and asked for the "4g hotspot" plan like the post said. I also saw it under features on account management but it didn't actually say "unlimited". The rep didn't seem to know about it. Once he found it he said it was a November promotion but since it was only December 2nd he'd see if he could get it done for me. Sure enough. Came back and said he got it approved. Now have unlimited data on phone and hotspot for 1 cent less a month. Thanks! I guess I could always remove the hotspot and retain the data plan but I'm fine for now. Interestingly enough. My old data with hotspot was all within the data section. Now I just see unlimited data for $30 in the data section. Then the 4G hotspot feature is found in the "features" section. So I don't see the problem in dropping the hotspot plan and keeping the unlimited data whenever I want. They aren't tied together like my old data plan was.

YAYS!
I did this yesterday. Took three tries until I got a rep that would help me do it. Here's hoping it lasts/doesn't cause problems! I wouldn't think it would but you never know with these carriers. They are evil!
I wonder how long this is going to work? I'm switching to Verizon within the next month or so

Thanks OP for linking back to the instructions. Thanks to others for guidance also. I just called and it worked no problem on first call. I joined Verizon exactly 1 month ago so no chance of grandfathering for me.
My exact steps(about a 5-10 minute process):
1- *611
2- option 4
3- spoke "add a feature"
4- enter password
5- spoke to an outgoing customer service lady
6- told her, exact words: "I want add the unlimited 4G hotspot feature to my plan"
7- 1 min later it was done. She told me I would now have unlimited data vs. the 4 gigs I had.
8- hung up, refreshed "My Verizon Data" widget and it was unlimited!!
9- logged into My Verizon, change features under plan, removed 4g hotspot($30.00 add-on)
10- unlimited data for $29.99 remains on my plan
11- SUCCESS!!!
5 tries...success. Watchout cause they accidentally put "global 4G data 50mb" for 30.00 per month...had to call to get removed but only took a second. Let's hope they don't go back and change it

Nevermind the last part of my last part. The 4g hotspot wasn't showing up on the my Verizon app, but when I logged into the site it was there so I have to take it off. Also when I did this I found out that apparently I'm over paying on my family plan shared minutes by $20

Glad it worked guys!
As soon as my charge is fixed I'm doing this. yusssssss
Worked for me this morning on my first call, however he did put me on hold for 10 minutes. I did not have to cancel the hotspot online because it automatically cancelled my previous data pack and says "unlimited data / email access". Widget does indicate unlimited! Does anybody else know if I leave it like that will it charge me twice for data? I tried to find my regular 2gb data pack but it wasn't there anymore. And when I went to "change features" it said the my data pack ( that I just added) was not available anymore and if I deleted or changed it I would not get it back..... interesting!! Thanks ForeverSupra I'm Stoked!!

Why not try it now? You don't have to have a working phone for them to change your plan.

My droid x is still on my plan because the charge couldn't activate due to no MEID.
I'm trying to fix it incase dude on ebay stiffs me. Otherwise phone works perfect.

Got charged $150 by T-mobile for WiFi call roaming.....

Was in France, used T-mobile WiFi calling feature and got billed just like I haven't used it at all..... THIS IS NUTS....Is T-Mobile trying to rip me off or did WiFi calling not work on CM ROM. I obviously know how to use it and even showed my friend who by the way did NOT get charged.
So yes, WiFi calling icon showed its active and connected while I made the calls....

Was your phone in Airplane Mode?
I don't think WiFi calling works in air plane mode
If you turn your phone in airplane mode, then turn on WiFi, it should work.
Just call up t mobile. They usually sort those things out for you.

I did. They say they cannot guaranty free Wifi-calling roaming....and the only thing they can offer is $80 credit with 2-year contract extension.\
I am just too tired to argue.....it says on Tmobile website NO ROAMING CHARGES, I asked to see Terms and Condition for Wifi-calling where they dont guaranty it and rep says they dont have it.....
I have no proof that I used Wifi calling and all they see are my calls without any Wifi-calling.....
The Wi-Fi calling does not work in airplane mode... Skype, text plus work strictly in Wi-Fi with ap mode on. Wi-Fi calling requires a cell connection to register. I just finished a deployment in the middleast and used the Wi-Fi calling feature, no extra charges. I'm rooted using weapon gingerbread.

I know 110% that I was on active Wifi-Calling. Does this feature need some sort of activation besides the already included Wifi-Calling app ?
Lol you should say that it's a software issue that t mobile ignored and you expected the phone to function without extra charges.

And I though they never know. LOL

Well, at least we all will know in case of travel abroad: either bring a US VPN account or do without.
oh well, i extended my contract and got my $80 back. i figured i am probably gonna get One S anyway, so now I dont have a choice and will be buying One S when it comes out since i am already under contract.
I don't have WiFi calling because I am not with T-Mobile. Instead, I use airplane mode with WiFi turned on and use Skype which gaurantees that there's no roaming charges. That will work for any phone which has WiFi and Skype anywhere in the world.
WiFi calling uses your plan's minutes, unless you strictly went WiFi with the Groove IP+Google Voice route. I'm not surprised they whooped you with an extravagant phone bill from you "roaming" internationally.
I've used WiFi calling in Australia, Brazil, Canada, and the Philippines. I've never got a single charge from T-Mobile.

thats how its supposed to be. i have NO idea what happened to me. i only see 2 reasons: 1. problem with custom ROM or 2. T-mobile has to actually enable Wifi-calling on their side in order to avoid roaming charges.
of course maybe its just a glitch in the system. after all how many people use this to avoid roaming fees....very few, so i really have ZERO proof.

One way to figure it out without costing you $$$ is to take your phone to T-Mobile and use one of their store's SIM cards to try out the setup you used for WiFi Calling. If you discover the cause for being charged while using WiFi Calling, post it here.
That's why I'm always careful to not enable any roaming with data, hits you hard. :/

just a few days ago my wife's g2x wifi was on, and showed connected, but it wasn't. I had to reboot the phone for it to be truly connected to my wifi. She was using carrier data and didn't even know it!
I'm just sayin!

my data and data roaming was disabled. < thats another lol story how i decided to do some web browsing in Switzerland and got billed about $70 bucks. i had no idea that 1MB of data could cost $15 bucks, while calls are very reasonably priced.
another word of advice while abroad, NEVER use pay phones in airport or hotels ! Use you Tmobile phone instead. Many if not most of those are scam businesses not controlled by any FCC
