Hello!
My Galaxy R (Austria, 2.3.6) will show 180° wrong compass information in Google Maps. When GPS is not active the arrow will point to the exact opposite direction the phone is looking. When 3D-Compass mode is activated the buildings shown in front of me will be behind me.
Other Compass Apps (tested "Compass" from catch.com from Market) will work fine.
I've also compared to an ZTE-Blate, the Blade was always correct, Galaxy R always wrong in Google Maps. Compass showed the same info for both phones.
*#0*# -> sensor -> magnetic sensor:
The green line will always show North
I think this is a google maps problem, i wanted to ask for confirmation on other phones before reporting it to Google&Samsung.
Can with an Galaxy R confirm this?
Mine shows it correctly. Where do you live? If you live at the southern hemisphere your compass may be preset for the northern one, since the ROM you use is for Austria.

I don't think thats the case. The magnetic sensor works by actually detecting the magnetic field in the surroundings.
I would suggest OP to update / reinstall Google Maps, its a software problem only with Google Maps and nothing else. As it is working with other apps its working correctly.
Hope it helps.
Hello!
I live in Austria and this problem occured with the original ROM and so i updated via kies, and it is still present. It is an original Drei branded phone with no modifications except root via cwm.
My maps version is 6.2.0 (Settings->Info will show: 6.2.0 (#6020014) gmm-android-samsung with platform android:samsung-GT_I9103-GT_I9103 and i can not uninstall it, since it came within the ROM. I tried to clear Data/cache for maps and tried uninstalling upgrades for Google maps (then its version 6.0.0). NUnfortunately I was not able to solve my problem.
I am pretty sure that the magnetic/geographic poles will not switch at the equator, so no adjustment for this should be necessary.
Also all other compass functions will work correctly, even google sky maps will show north correctly.
@mrsaccess:
Thank you for trying, now i know the problem is not on all phones. I would like to know if it is software dependent. I assume you do not have the Drei Firmware, can you tell me which firmware you have?
If someone with the Drei Firmware reads this can you please test, if this will also affect you? Note: GPS must have no lock, the arrow has to turn if you turn your phone to reproduce this. Try pointing your phone to North and see if the arrow in google maps will also point to North.
I have the original 2.3.4 that came with the device.
The problem has magically disappeared on my phone... Wow....
I also had a small problem with with a website (german wikipeda fir "Gin") which would "crash" the browser everytime I zoomed in, which i could reproduce for 2 days, after these two dayse it worked fine again.
The phone seems to solve all problems by itself...
mine too..... zskk5 hong kong...
Mine too still has Gmaps problem

How did the problem vanish by itself.. Pleas recollect and let me know what could have corrected it. Even my phone shows reverse direction in google maps but all fine with the compass apps
If anybody else aware of solution, please help.
Note: I have already tried, re installing.

Has anyone tried out the new GMAPS 4.0 on their device? Has anyone got it to work when using GPS? I installed it and everytime I click on Use GPS it crashes the application. This use to happen to my old I910 with version 3.32 and not sure why.

Version 4.0 works perfect on mine and I get a quick lock on GPS. Maybe you should try reloading it.
i get a gps satellite lock inside in under thirty seconds with 4.0
I had this same issue as well. I had to revert back to v3.2.1 to use the app.

Tried uninstalling and reinstalling a few times and the same result. I also reverted back to an older version.
wow, I just got my i-920 omnia2 about 4 weeks ago and it was about 3 weeks ago I downloaded and installed google maps. it is version 3.3.0. when did they come out with version 4? the one I have works fine. takes a while to acquire satellites. I just tried out that latitude yesterday. very cool thing, but it didn't work. but the phone that I was "tracking" had latidute running then "exit". it asks if you want to still send location info and yes was selected. per google, when in this mode it sends signal based on cell tower info--does this to preserve battery life since if the gps were on constantly and sending signal if would drain it. cell tower info not as accurate. but it didn't work at all. showed essentially no movement. was going to try to leave google maps open and thus sending gps info to see if it worked that way.
oh, to original poster--didn't the i910 have gps locked so you couldn't use it except for verizon stuff?

The GPS on the I910 was unlocked. I used IGO8 as well as GOOGLE MAPS and BING.
GPS
I have the i920 and have installed the google4 with no problems. The gps was locked within one minute, didn't time it but was within 10 meters.
Just installed Google Maps 4.0 yesterday -- works AWESOME on my i920, gps lock within 30 seconds when outside. Unfortunately still no navigation like they have on the newer android devices (grr, google bastadz!) but it most certainly does not crash.
What ROM are you using, and did you uninstall the older version manually before installing the new one? Also try using SKTools' uninstaller -- that will also scan for left behind registry keys \ temp\cache files and remove them.
Well I installed the newest version which is 4.1 with the voice command and it works great.
Working great
I would make sure you have the version available for the windows 6.5. Other than that I can't think of anything that would cause this problem besides the fact you don't have the GPS turned on for both the phone and the program.
I am having issues with my compass when using the GPS Essentials and Phone Tester app. Basically, these apps both think that the compass is always facing south or southwest. The compass in Google Maps is working though, so I wanted to ask if anyone else has noticed this issue. If not, could someone try to replicate? I am trying to decide if this is actual hardware problem or if Google changed the compass API or something.

Those apps are probably not compatible with Android 4.4.
I see you have a Nexus 5. Could you please try to replicate the issue, to confirm? Thanks.

Well, I don't really have a Nexus 5.
I'm here just to help.
I noticed my compass was wonky in Google Maps and GPS Status. In GPS Status there is an option under Tools to calibrate the compass, and it asks you to rotate the phone 1-2 times along each axis (so spin it in three different ways). After I did that, the compass started pointing in the right direction.
Has anyone also Problems with the inbuilt Compass of the One? Lately I wanted to use Google Maps while walking and discovered the Compass is working within Google Maps. So i tried a few other Compass Apps, where some do work and others dont.
I did create a Issue on this, but it seems I'm the only one with this Issue so far: https://jira.cyanogenmod.org/browse/BACON-731
Im on stock CM11S, so it cant be any Mod / Custom Rom / Kernel Problems.

Compass issue related to encryption
Hi,
I have the exact same problem. At first, I thought it might be a hardware defect, but that isn't the case.
Is you phone encrypted?
As bizarre as it sounds, it seems like the compass stops working as soon as the phone is encrypted. I did a factory reset - compass started working again. Encrypted phone again - compass no longer working.
Daniel, if your phone is encrypted as well, please update the jira ticket - it will help the developers reproduce / fix the issue.
Bye,
Till
Same problem here, but not encrypted
My Phone is encrypted NOW, but I really dont know if it was back when I encoutered that the Compass does not work with Google Maps.
I will try to Factory Reset if Ive got the Time and see if this does something to Google Maps. I wanted to try CM11 (without S) anyway.
Prior to encryption, my compass was just way off. Generally around 25 degrees counter clockwise. Now that the phone is encrypted, the compass doesn't work at all.
Anyone know if these issues are present on the "Vanilla" CM11 snapshot and/or nightly roms direct download from the CM site?

According to the Jira Ticket, this also does not work on CM11 nightlys.
Compass was always broken even on Nexus 5. I was hoping it would be fixed in 1+1 and so many Google Maps updates and yet this is still an issue.
It doesnt even work on N5 when encryption is enabled? really?

Thats weird. but I dont see the connection to the OPO then, Compass is fine when Phone is not encrypted.
My compass works but it's just way off lol
//edit
Actually I just tried it now since maps got updates recently and now it's kinda right and isn't off by much
Phone isn't encrypted
Sent from my A0001 using XDA Free mobile app
cm11 night 20150105 ,not encrypted.
Compass only worked in notification drawer widget, all other apps didn't work.
My compass was 90 degrees off in Google Maps earlier today. It was 180 degrees off a couple weeks ago too. What causes this?
Same problems here. Anyone an idea?
Compass works on my end but the orientation is off 90 degrees in CM11 I believe. It really throws off walking directions but driving seems ok
try this. download GPS Status & Toolbox @ playstore. calibrate the compass, like here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rak2xhnk0qE
couldn't test it myself yet.
I dont know if anyone is having this problem. But since i got my phone i haven't
Been able to use the google maps to navigate. I dont thinkis the gps i think it might be
The gyroscope. My note works great.
I think I'll have to exchange it.
I also erase clear data and everything from google maps but no luck.

Try calibrating your GPS. I had similar issue. Got solved after calibrating. Check you GPS signal using GPS test app.
Not sure if you found a fix but I'm having the same problem.
Used it first today and as I drove down my street I realised my GPS thought I was facing the opposite way and it wasn't moving at all on the screen.
I kept driving because I knew half of where I was going and about 5 minutes later it changed but was showing me still in my street.
It's like it's lagging but when I quit out and hit the find my location button. It found my location?
GPS on and off
I have model SM-G930W8.
Android 6.0.1
Baseband version G930W8VLU2API1
Kernel version 3.18.14-9105000
I had this issue earlier this year. It's any app that uses GPS (Google Maps, Strava etc.). Took it to a Samsung auth repair center. The tech mentioned that this can happen when doing OTA software updates so he basically wiped the phone and re-set up through his computer that he said had the updated software. It worked for a few months but now I'm having the same problem again.
GPS won't lock. I downloaded GPS TEST app and it cannot fix the location of my phone. I've tried resetting the phone, calibrating the gps sensor and none of them fix the problem. Tried pretty much all the workarounds I can find on the internet and nothing works.
I'd hate to have to keep bringing it to a service center for a proper wipe every few months.
Anyone with any thoughts?
Anybody seem to be having problems with their XZ Premium GPS not working as they should be? Mine is intermittent, sometimes when it works, it works well. But the moment I took a wrong turn and quickly fired up my Google Map navigator, it have problems detecting where I'm at. The Map will show the route, but my location is all over the place. It would pause and stay in that spot for a while, then move me on a lake or off road. I tried "GPS status" app to pin point where I'm at. It doesn't always want to work.
It's getting really annoying, I want it to be reliable when I need it. Lucky I still have my Z3 as backup. So far, seems like the Z3 is the best Sony ever made.
Same problem here...It is hard to start GPS....it shows current position, it lose it. I have to fight for 10 minutes until its stable.
the same issue here. OK after reboot, but problem is back again a after
I had that problem once while downtown... the buildings in that area are all old and packed pretty closely together. It just did not want to update for the life of me. Rebooting it did not seem to help it at all. Especially using the walking directions... forget it. I didn't have time to fuss with a gps app to see if I just wasn't getting any sat connections, but if it happens again I will.
Wow, so it's a known common problem. I hope it's software related so it can be fix by updates. Now I have to open two programs to make sure it always working all the time. Run "GPS Status" app and then open Google Map. Cumbersome.
Dial *#*#7378423#*#*, service test, GPS, Purge Assistance Data
This worked for me!
My use of Purge Assistance Data seemed to help, but I've had a couple of episodes of the problem since then where it didn't help. However, in the past three days the problem has not appeared. I cannot determine what has changed; many apps have updated as usual, and in order to try to determine if this is a hardware problem I ran phone in Safe mode during which problem did not appear. Interestingly (or not) the problem has not occurred during subsequently use of the phone in normal mode. BTW, I'm running the July 1st security update (45.0.A.7.90); the August 1st version has not been offered to me yet by the Software Update).

Very nice. Seem to be working very well. Although I have not put it to full use yet since I'm working at home today. Let's see how it run when I go to work in the office tomorrow.
This won't help? - - https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=73337848
My XZ premium is 4 weeks old and had problems with the GPS since day one. The GPS was very unreliable taking me in the wrong direction and sometimes delays in giving instructions until after passing my turns. Using google Maps and high accuracy settings. Contacted Sony today and they have asked me to contact google first to make sure there is no software issues from their side before they can look at it. Meanwhile I will download a different navigation app and see if the same problem happens.
I did GPS location test but it seems everytime I attempt it the phone seems to take forever in finding anything so I give up normally after 10 mins.
If any one has found a solution to this problem please let me know (other than changing the phone of course)
My GPS problems went away with 45.0.A.7.120
You're not alone!! I always end up going wrong directions. Compass is very way off.
Sent from my G8142 using XDA-Developers Legacy app
+1 here. it's really frustrating as i use my GPS a lot.
I have the same issue. Second time I sent my phone to Sony. I will update the forum.
Was having this issue as well. Purned GPS Assistance data seemed to help. also did the battery trick. maybe sony should give us an update that will not allow gps to "turn off" when using apps that require it.
i searched on my phone some where on the hidden settings. The Destination was 30mins and about 20miles or so. Said the gps was only on for around 10. Cellular data was used too. This has to be a software issue. why it shuts off gps at times.

Galileo is a new GPS system developed by the EU, like GLONASS is the russian GPS and Beidou the chinese GPS.
And to answer the question, yes, our phone supports Galileo.

Yes, XZP supports Galileo. But it has not been enabled yet. :/
Had the same problem, gps not locking until I purged assistance data and rebooted the device, then it worked fine for about 48 hours until I had to repeat the process.
I completely solved this problem by uninstalling Google play services updates. This was a known issue for other phones some years ago.
Can anyone else confirm this solution?
