How many Nandroid backups do you keep "just in case?"
I want to balance safety, but not fill my SD Card with stuff I don't need.
Electronics are not infallible. Whatever you have on your card is a copy, from backup(s) on your PC.
I only have 1 copy on a Backup-SD card, usually updated from the last backup. But I have an original backup (and succeeding) version from day 1 on my PC, just in case.
nandroid backups aren't too critical if you backup the individual apps and settings with something like Titanium Backup. I try to get a nandroid every time I apply a new update or ROM however, and then just keep it until I'm sure I don't want to roll back.
I will usually keep the last nandroid on device/memory card, and store the rest like mt4g-cm7.1-backup-2012-02-05.7z. For Titanium Backup I keep on device and will periodically make an archive to snap shot off into cold storage with my old nandroids.
How many....is just a matter of how much space I'm willing to allocate. Which is probably 10-40 gigs for now.

What's a good backup strategy to use with the gtab?
Earlier today I removed sdcard2 without unmounting it and took a stab at installing the android SDK on an unused netbook running Win 7. At some point the gtab started notifying me that the sdcard may need reformatting (it was inaccessible at this point). A power cycle didn't clear things up so I formatted sdcard and lost a bunch of files and two games stopped working. Anyway, that's my tale of woe. Now, how could I lessen the pain?
I always keep a backup of pertinent data on my computer too. I backup monthly with titanium and with clockwork. I then take copies of those off the gtablet and put them on a backup file / rom vault on my computer.
Titanium is worth the money and the process is so so so worth the time.

Here is the issue. I use Titanium at the moment. I have many apps installed on my phone; so many that I HAVE to use the sd card for quite a few.
Now when I install a new ROM it creates a problem. I can't just use Titanium to install my apps in one batch step since Titanium only installs to the phone by default. I have to select about half. Then move them over to the sd card manually. Then go back and select some more. Then move them to the card. And then do the same with the last remaining apps. This tends to take some time to do and is a real pain.
Is there a backup software that will install everything as it was when it was backed up? If they were originally on the sd card then I want those apps to restore to the card by default. Is there anything like that?
I use Tom tool box pro and I'm pretty sure when you restore it restores everything account info themes all that stuff

Thanks for responding. Restoring account info and especially themes can cause issues jumping between ROMs. Would never do that. But does it restore apps originally on the sd card back on the sd card; or does it install everything on phone? That is all I care to know about.
Not sure what app would do what you want, but I put the word out there with the dev of ROM Cleaner.
His script backs up all your apps, wifi/BT/mail accounts and re-installs them before the first boot is even initiated. It also deletes unwanted apps/widgets that come with most sense ROMs. The great thing is if you dont want to delete all the apps and widgets that his script deletes, you can make it to where it won't. its very customizable in that aspect. Edit: You have to run a separate script to restore the wifi/BT/mail accounts, which you obviously don't need to if you don't want.
Check out his thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1050283
Patraics is a nice guy and VERY quick to respond to any questions you may have. I posted the question not even 5 minutes ago and already got a response saying that he will look into it.
EDIT: Because of his scripts, i don't even use TB anymore. His way is easier and less time consuming.
I'll have to look into it. I like Titanium backup with everything it does. But I don't know why it is so difficult for it to restore aps to the same location where they backed them up from. Going to send a suggestion to TB too.

TB does have some useful features, like freezing and uninstalling system apps. But realistically, if you arent going to use those system apps anyways, you can just have ROM Cleaner delete them before they even get the chance to be fully installed.
On the other hand, TB also does things that as flashaholics, we don't want it to do, like backup app data that can mess up a fresh flash. which is why I don't use it.
Although it does suck having to start angry birds from the beginning every time I find a new daily driver.... lol
Just an FYI though, IF you do decide to go ahead with ROM Cleaner, when it backs up your apps, it doesnt compress them or anything like that, it puts them all in a folder and then just leaves them there, leaving you to do the clean up, if you don't want those back ups to be there anymore.

Why? Does it do what I asked?
My Backup Pro
For backing up apps I have found My Backup Pro to be very simple. Will backup all apps & media and or data. Also had freeze, unfreeze, wipe cache and wipe data capabilities. Curious why storing all apps on system instead of S.D. card at all? Will take up all of your storage space on system and slow your system down. Also if connecting to desktop only have access to S.D. card so that also limits your accessibility to your apps.
Tbo haven't have an issue of apps not going to SD with titanium backup. Exp, my xda app is on the SD and when I restore its back to SD. Dunno how but ill look and see

Titanium does what you ask. You just need to adjust your settings. Go to preferences>restoration location and chose "original location" instead of the default setting that allows titanium to choose.

That makes me feel so much like a NOOB. I have mentioned this in a few places on XDA and other forums. I have yet to have one person mention that there was a setting in the preferences. I swear it was not there the last time I looked but that was.....well quite some time ago. Thanks so much for bringing it to my attention. Noticed that there were many other new selections in there too. I guess I had the better backup software all along.
I apologise if this is in the wrong forum I have Titanium backup pro and want to sync to my drop box but when I do this it also makes a backup on my nexus 4 internal storage is it not possible just to backup to drop box
Thanks in advance

This is exactly what I want to do as well - to back up all the files straight away to Dropbox/box without having to store them onto my internal storage first.
My backup files are 1.8gb at the moment and I hate to think all that precious storage space have gone to waste.
I think carbon, which is another file backup app, is capable of direct upload to the cloud. However it is not as powerful as titanium backup. Carbon is free though.
Dropbox always needs local storage to sync with the cloud storage.
You have gotten further than I have. I have Titanium Pro and I can not get it to backup to Dorpbox. My internal storage dropped to just under nil last night after a backup.
Just use FolderSync. I just did that.
Alternatively you could delete all backups after the upload to dropbox is complete. It's what I do (not to all apps but some of them)
Wait a Sec!
There is really no reason to drop box your Titanium Backup, that is why you have Titanium! Plug the phone into the computer, with appropriate drivers of coarse, and copy your titanium file to hard drive, then copy to a USB reader with a large enough micro to hold it. You are now double backed up and not killing the Data Network!
Best of Luck!

Some phone, such as nexus 4, doesn't have external DVD cards and that's why we don't want to store backup locally. My impression is that since titanium backup does incremental back up of only the changes, removing the files locally on device means each back up would take significantly longer.

Sorry for bumping such an old thread, but the question fits exactly what I am trying to find out.
How do I set up titanium backup do write directly to dropbox?
I have only limited space on my phone and I dont want to have the titanium folder (several GB big) in my internal storage.
Hello, unlike in Titanium Backup where you can choose the number of backups you want to keep, I can not see any option in which you can choose the number of Nandroid backups you wish to keep. For example, if I want to make a backup everyday automatically and if I forget to delete one every day, in a week, I will end up with 7 backups which will fill up my device's storage. Even if I remember to delete a backup every day, it will become quite tedious. So, how can I make Nandroid backups overwrite each other so that I will always have 1 SINGLE backup?
Manually with root explorer. TWRP has backup to SD card rather than internal memory but those backups are big so you will still need to delete them occasionally. I why do you want a full nandroid backup every day? TiBu will keep track of app changes daily if set that way. How many actually system changes are you making everyday?
Sent from my iPho.... Hahaha couldn't keep a strait face.
To be clear from the start, my titanium backup is the paid version and it was set to store all backups on my external SD card. I had been recently manually running the two scheduled programs "Redo backups for modified data" and "Backup new user+system apps & newer versions" over the last couple of weeks. I wiped my phone entirely and using TWRP put on a clean backup of a fresh full firmware flash and did my system all over again since I had removed one too many system apps and "Videos" app was not working correctly and a few others.
Well I got my phone encrypted (not SD card), rooted it, got titanium backup installed and set it to use the SD card instead of internal but when it refreshed I saw many many many apps only had backups as of March... I purposefully ran the two schedules before I did the phone wipe, to ensure that I would have current up-to-date saved data for all apps. I remember scanning down a bit and seeing April 17 for the backup dates. So why did so many backups not appear? I have had a hell of a time setting everything up correctly again, my launcher was disorganized as it was before I set up my phone entirely to my desires. Everything was messed up. A few apps did in fact have current backups. Especially the new apps.
Is there something I am missing about "Redo backups for modified data" and "Backup new user+system apps & newer versions" as to what their function is? Don't those two fuctions ensure that every app both old and new get all backed up and all their data with it? Or do I have to go to batch actions and manually just tell it to do an entire backup of everything and ignore those two features? I am very confused by this and a bit angry since I thought the whole point of those scheduled programs were to ensure you had everything backed up.
Can you help me figure this out?
Thanks.
