[HOW TO CHANGE LCD DENSITY] [G2X] without density apps. - T-Mobile LG G2x

Hey guys. Im sure this might be posted elsewhere but this is specific to the G2X.
If you want to change the density of your screen to add more real estate do the following.....
I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR BRICKED PHONES... Always make a backup before messing with your build.prop
Ok now thats said heres what you will need.
1. Root explorer
2. Some free time
3. And a sandwich
Open root explorer and nav to system in root explorer once in system mount R/W.
Long press build.prop then choose "open in text editor.
Nav down to
ro.sf.lcd_density=240
Change "240" to "200".
Push menu>save & exit.
Remove battery (hard reset) this will insure the changes made stick.
Now if you do a reboot it will not save the new density. Also density changer apps are only save temp.
Enjoy more space on the g2x.
Some lcd density apps apply the change as default but will cause bootloops. This will not cause a bootloop.
You can also pull your build.prop to your desktop and edit it with notepad++ then push back to the phone however first method is the easiest.

One quick note: You can get compatibility issues in market by changing your screen density.
Ran into this problem way back
Making bad decision's one at a time.

Please list apps here that are incompatible with changing the density.

Mine is set at 190. Never a single issue.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium

Nice. I havnt noticed any probs on 200
Sent From My steak using A1 steak sauce app (Sensation)

Wasn't application incompatibilities it was the market thinking its not compatiable. It would just give me the "Your device is not compatible with this application "
Happened to me a while back but haven't had an issue since...
Pin it to Win it.

That's how you change the LCD with... every android phone if I'm not mistaken.
But anyway, if you try to download an app on market and it tells you the device is incompatible, just change your LCD back to 240, reboot, and clear market data.
Sometimes I have to do that.
I normally have my LCD to 200.
EDIT:
Also... I don't like how you tell people to remove the battery... using root explorer, after you change the density just save and exit then reboot your phone NORMALLY and the changes will stick.
Why do you advise people to remove the battery? That's completely unnecessary.

Actually on the g2x it will not stick without a battery pull thats why i made this write up.

My density settings always stick after a normal reboot or shut down. I've never had to pull my battery to change my density settings.

Correct and they should. However ive tested this on my girls g2x and it would not stick unless i did save exit battery pull.

That's odd actually... then people should first reboot normally, then if the setting doesn't fit to battery pull?
I don't see why her settings wouldn't stay though.

I know its weird. She was complaining of the big icons so i figured yea cool just dl a density changer app. The apps would work. But on every reboot it would just go back to 240. So I got root explorer and then edited 240 to 200 click save and exit did a reboot and it wouldnt stick. Same steps save and exit pull battery and it sticks

Started running into my issue all over the market so here I am back at 240 because I use the market to much and It was giving me alot of issues I wonder if there is a fix for this without resetting it to stock and rebooting twice to get it back to your custom setting just to install one app lol
Pin it to Win it.

Anytime I've used Rootexplorer I had to copy the build.prop to my sd card then edit and copy over. I could never get it to stick just by trying to edit original build.prop with root explorer. ES file explorer i was able to just edit original build.prop and when saved it makes a backup.

WORKING EXCELLENT with G2X Gingerbread leak update.zip, you will be in love !!!! NO MORE BAGS at all !!!
I was very surprised ! When I saw that LG G2x working EXCELLENT with density "190" with out ANY COSMETIC problem !!!!
Example: My nexus S of cause working too with "190 Density" BUT I got a lot of problem ! BECAUSE "ROM" not intended" to work with higher resolution !!!!!!!... EXAMPLE I got bad LOCK SCREEN, some widgets sucks...etc.
but I remembered first review about LG Optimus 2x, It said that the phone has higher resolution, plus I saw the photo.)
So lets START !
U need Root Explorer !
1) open root explorer.
2) go to system
3) open "Build.prop" (long press on it>open in text Editor)
4) almost at the bottom u will SEE this: ro.sf.lcd_density=240
5) Change 240 on 190
6) Close and save.
7) Fix permissions. (better do it in "rom manager")
8) Restart your phone.
(If you will find any bag, u can easy return everything back, I found only 1 ! On Latitude Icons funny lol!.....)

Looks weird. What are the advantages? Just that you can see more entries in a scrollable list like Gmail, settings, etc? Does the keyboard get smaller? Smaller keyboard is a no-go for me. I have big fingers.

Yup. Just makes everything smaller so you can view more on the screen at one time than you can by default.
Thanks for thread was curious how to do this outside of using the root tools app. Ended up with a density of 190, its all compact and tiny but the clock text is still visible.

Be aware some apps will no longer render full screen after changing this setting, you'll have to decide what you're willing to deal with if it happens or ask the dev of the app to do whatever it is with their app so it works with other random density.

no, you need to uncheck the compatibilty check box, and then reboot. that will make 95% of apps render correctly on the lower DPI.

What are the best apps to have on a rooted (no roms yet) g2x?

I rooted my g2x earlier
And I have no roms because I don't know how to install them yet
But I want yup know what are the best apps for the g2x
So far I have
Titanium back up
Android booster
Bloat freezer (which I don't think it works)
Adfree
Busybox installer (which I don't know how to use)
Astro
mobile manager
Metamorph (which I really don't know how to use or get themes for it)
So if anyone has any input in what I have so far, knows how to use then correctly or has any apps that I need or works better then what I got, please help me
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
Titanium freezes apps so get rid of bloatfreeze. I like rootexplorer better than astro, addfree is also good for blocking adds in apps.
MEXICO U-17 WC CHAMPIONS!!
Root explorer is a fantastic app. I also use beautiful widgets and ring droid. As said before titanium backup is the best to freeze bloatware.

I installed Go Launcher and all the other Go products (most are free). It really brings the phone to life. I also Have lockscreen widget which helps simulate the cool lock-screen to camera/contacts/Music Player function the Sensation has.
Reboot widget. Much more simple than holding down power + volume down.
I use Droidwall. Simple firewall for your phone. Blocks data/wifi access to applications unless you explicitly allow it.
Any other good apps? and how fo I use metamorph? where do I get thee themes for it?
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
I'm going to have to second droidwall. Root call blocker is great, too.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
SetCPU- CPU profile/steps changer
Cache Mate NG- cache cleaner
Root Tools- Build.prop.editor and Boot animation changer
AniMod- changes animation effects when changing menu's etc...Usually i keep all animation off so only the top task bar does the animation of flipping.
VMHeapTool- changes Heap size easily to 40 to give apps more breathing room
Spareparts- gives easy options to turn off certain settings
LG/2x Black- turns your LED buttons on and off when you recieve certain type of notifications.
SD Speed Increase- changes default SD of 46kbs to 2048-4024kbs to allow faster read and write speeds. Mileage varies depending on SD card.
+1 for adfree
+1 droidwall
+1 Go SMS
Freeze all bloatware ...only unistall non-essential programs like Tegrazone app if you don't use it.
DSPmanager -makes speaker soooooooo much louder been doing it for months no damage. Use the e q and turn em all the way up except for the first one, play with it while song is playing
APNsbackup- ur gonna need it for some roms if u like having data connection all the time.
Root Explorer and ROM Manager are MUST!
Root Explorer is one of the very best file manager and you can even backup/restore/transfer personal data on /data/data
ROM Manager is associated with clockworkmod recovery. It is another A MUST if you want to do nandroid backup and install custom ROM.
AnReboot can reset your phone if some persistent problem happens (like no signal)
Add LBE privacy guard to the list. It's handy. Use it with droidwall.

Titanium Backup free does not freeze apps.
Try Anttek App Manager. It does other stuff but I use it for freezing bloatware and it works perfectly.

Icons turning to default after reboot?

Everytime I reboot my icons change to the green uploading icons and not to the normal ones. I have to manually remove them and add them again. Another thing i've notices is once in a while distorted horizontal lines appear across some apps. They will not go away most of the time unless I reboot.?
Sometimes my widgets get colored lines in it and i have to reboot to. My.contacts app disappear and turn into to people app all on its on til i reboot. Hope they fix these issues but no updates in site tmobile and phone companies have bad service.

I have the same problem but it only happens with a few specific games every time. It's annoying but I've just stopped fixing it and leave them as the android icon.
Mine was doing this for SD installed apps... Solved in the last update however...
Change the theme and back to restore the icons... marginally better than deleting and re-adding
You could also change the language, go to the main page, change the language back to what is was and it'll solve the problem.
move the apps that are loosing it's icons from sd to internal memory.
few of my games were doing this on reboot.
soon as I moved them to internal, no more problems.
kinda sucks that we can't take advantage of app2sd feature that comes with some of apps but until we get an update that fixes this bug, this is the only sure way I've found.

Yep, that fixed it after a restart. Why do some games install on the phone and some on SD? There doesn't seem to be any consistency.

I don't think apps install on the SD unless specified. As for the icons changing on reboot. This has been a problem on Android since apps to SD was implemented.

I'm having the same problem as well with my game icons.
That worked, Thanks!
My Facebook app on my main screen does the same thing -- I do have it moved to the SD card. Randomly the correct icon/logo appears on it, but most of the time it's the generic Android icon. I've learned to live with it -- maybe they'll fix it someday.
My icons return after a reboot, when I turn the phone off/on.

I tried this and it didn't work, until I realized that there were two Sense applications running and I killed the wrong one...D'oh!
I tried to force stop HTC sense and dashboard.... none of this worked.
So I tried changing the theme and IT WORKED!!!! When I restored my previous theme, all the icons went back to normal.
This the easiest non-frustrating method. From time to time, my phone crashes and restarts by itself and all my icons would change.
Has anyone tried using Rom Manager and run "fix permissions" with any luck?

It is not a permissions issue. It is quite simple.. the desktop icons are loaded before the sd card is mounted and accessible so it can't load the icons and won't retry later. Causing sense to reload in any way after the SD card is mounted will reload the icons. Changing themes works. Killing sense to force a reload works. Using titanium backup to freeze/unfreeze any of the sense Widgets works. I'm sure there are plenty more ways of making sense reload

Some helpful apps for those who are rooted :)

Bloat Freezer - be careful what you freeze, if you freeze an application that is running you will have to restart your phone up, but otherwise a great app for freezing apps you don't need
ES file explorer- a free version on root explorer that to me works just as well
Rom manager
SD booster
Set PCU
Sqlite editor
Light flow
If anyone else has any they want to add feel free to, just trying to help some people that may be new to this

That's great to here, because I am in the process of trading my Galaxy S II for an Atrix 2. I missed Motorola too much. I was hoping there was an app to remove the carrier label from the status bar.
I could be wrong, but I don't see anything in Rom Toolbox to get rid of the AT&T wording in the status bar. But what you can do, is change all of the graphic icons (like battery, signal, wifi, just to name a few). Sometimes I would choose a rom just based on these small details! Lol. Now, I can get past that and actually choose a rom based on performance!

Thanks for clarifying. There is another app called carrier name that may do it, I assumed Rom Toolbox would do it also. If not I will do it the fun way
Has anyone running lfaber06's ROM attempted to change their CPU values with ROM Toolbox yet? I'm running his ROM/Theme with no issues as of yet. I just changed my SD Boost Value to 2048kb from 1024kb via ROM Toobox (Pro Version) and thus far, no issues as of yet... Anyone else toyed around with this app? If so what have they experimented with? I saw in an earlier post someone changed fonts and notification icons, etc. Anything else? Such as kernal tweaks, etc?

If it's just the stocks app, you can move the apk from /system/app to somewhere on your sd card (for backup purposes). Any root file explorer will allow you to do this. OR, you can just freeze it with Titanium.

I feel like a better option would probably be to figure out WHY the stocks app is using so much CPU...when I was still on the RUU the app rarely did anything even though I put stocks into it and such. Maybe something's wrong?
