[Q] Wifi dongle Vs Android wifi tether. - General Questions and Answers

Hello everyone.
firstly thank you to everyone on XDA for all your help past present and future. Extra special mention for the developers, Thank you so much!!!
now onto my question...
i have a htc desire bravo - running latest oxygen - dont think rom really matters for my question but thought i would put it out there...
i want to play world of warcraft while im sat in hotels (i travel alot) now i know that playing games over wifi is rubbish at best of times but...
is there a difference to sharing my phones 3g connection and having a dedicated 3g dongle?
will i just get same speeds and reliability out of them both? is it even worth having a wifi dongle?
thank you for all replys.

So long as your Desire supports the highest throughput of your network, you'll be fine. For example, your network may rin at 21mbps HSPA. Youre Desire supports only (I think) 7.2mbps HSPA. In this instance, you would get better performance out of a 3G dongle that could utilise the entire theoretical 21mbps (you'll never see speeds that high).
If your network only runs at 7.2mbps though, you're already getting the best possible throughput through your phone.
If you can find out how wide the bandwidth is on your mobile network, then find the official HSPA value supported by the Desire, that will tell you whether or not your phone will maximise what the network has to offer.
FWIW, I'm in rural Australia on a 7.2mbps backend, and I can game and stream over a tethered phone just fine Dongles are only really nexessary if you can't tether, or if you're interested in absolute best maximum throughput.
Good luck!

you as a mobile hot spot?

Been hearing a buzz lately about using an aircard and a mobile router to makeyour own personal wifi hotspot. Anyone done this and just how much faster is an air card than the single radio in the kaiser??? how many radio's in an air card??? Can air cards be fast enough to replace cable internet on only good enough for on the go???? Thanks for any answers / input.
P.S. If i do do this I would be using the newest aircard att has i think it's sierra usb connect 881

Here in the Middle East we have 3.5G and it has a max speed of 7.2 mbps. We also have a router that uses a SIM and connects to your devices by either erhernet or wi-fi. Here is a link with some information:
http://www.kw.zain.com/ZAINIM/portal/ChannelPage?loc=en&newuser=1
Due to the design of the page I had to link to the main page, the router is the top item on the right hand side of the page.
I have a linksys Wrt54g3g in Portugal. It supports hsadpa with 7.2 max speed. Really cool and usefull. Vodafone branded, but it can be bought free and unlocket.
Thanks fo rthe posts guys so from your comments i gather that I would like doing this. But i still need somone who has used cards here to let me know how much faster Ishould expect? Asked att people no clu of course there. Anyone here have the air cards at least??? how fast compared to phone?
unlimited data?
since my regular phone has unlimited data does anyone know what happens if i swap sims? will it give me data at the same rate still or does this take special sims?

Internet via bluetooth?

I am going to appologize in advance if this has been covered or a noob question, but I was wondering if I am able to connect this with another phone via bluetooth as possibly use that phone as a modem to let the 7510 get online? Reason being is this 7510 doesn't have T-Mobile 3G and I would be trying to use 3G off my other phone. I know this is possible on my laptop so the question has no arrisen since I am debating on either getting this 7510 or the Shift. I notcied that the shift uses Vista/Xp so I figured what ever my laptop could do as far as connections, I would be able to do with that as well.
If anyone could shed some info on the topic, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.
I'm sure this is possible- a lot of older PDAs used Bluetooth to connect to a mobile phone, and use the GPRS connection. Most 3G phones have a connection setup for BT Modem.
It would be pretty slow though- even if BT2 is supported on both devices you are unlikely to get anywhere near 3G speeds.
Does the Shift have the US T-Mobile 3G capability? If so it would be an easier setup!
Ya, no the shift doesn't have T-Mobile bands thats why I wanted to tether. I just wanted a small device to do emails/web/GPS/Music seperately. I'm thinking either the 7500 or so or a internet Tablet Device.
The 7500/7510 could do this, but forget about streaming music over a Bluetooth phone pairing. Locally stored music would be fine though though the wired headset or over Bluetooth A2DP.
But, if all you really want is a small devcie for those needs, why not opt for a smaller Windows Mobile device that does support the T-Mo 3G band?
There isn't a T-Mobile device that runs on 3G for the T-Zones data plan. Hence why I am actually using the Sony Ericcson TM506 for the data and trying to figure out with device I want more, which I am leaning more towards the Advantage than the N810 since its Windows Mobile and more customizible.
Ah- OK. Just seen that T-Mo use 1700 band for upload and 2100 for download, and no WM devices support that combo

Internet In School

So on my Captivate I have absolutely NO internet connection in school. WiFi is turned on and no sites load, once I get outside, boom, it loads. Other users that have Verizon and Sprint have internet.
I love the hardware and Quadrant scores on my captivate, but this is getting really bad. I am thinking of moving to Sprint and getting the HTC Evo 4G.
Does anyone else have this problem. Or any fixes?
did you try connecting to a wifi network.
or maybe learning to use your phone at all?
you have a piece of hardware that is far more capable than an evo if you are smart enough to figure out how to use it, and chances are your coverage is better aswell.............

I have had this for ~3 months I have a custom kernel and rom on it. Can I not simply use 3g in school without connecting to a network?
what rom,kernel,modem are you running?
are you on 850 or 1900 for 3g?
speculating from the info in your Original Post (OP),maybe yove got a modem with a weak signal and are on 1900mhz for data.
which doesnt penatrate walls as well as 850, my point being try a different modem but make sure its compatible with your kernel. If your connected to wifi instead of your carriers data it may be a rom problem, does your wifi work elsewhere?

I have no experience with modems whatsoever, can you tell me more? I can't seem to find a tutorial on installation all I see is this topic:

turn off wifi?
"Can I not simply use 3g in school without connecting to a network?"
your phone prefers a wifi connection over the natural 3g, if u want to use 3g in school turn off the wifi. or are you trying to use the wifi and it doesnt work? im slightly confused
There's possibly a Verizon and/or Sprint repeater inside the school. I worked in a building that only AT&T users could get a signal. Everyone else had to go outside.

[Q] Fasted wifi speed?

Hello,
I've just upgraded my home router, in order to speed up and future proof my home network, I've upgraded from a netgear DG834GT to a DGND3700, (mainly to add faster wifi and 1Gb ethernet).
On my old router my wifi connection from my phone was always 72Mbps. So I installed the new router and configured it to what I think is all the max settings, however my initial wifi speed on the phone was a lower 65Mps!?
After a while I realised that if I switched the phone wifi setting to max performance it would achieve 72Mbps (even though before with the older router it could always achieve this speed with this setting the other way). I'm no means an expert on wifi..etc.(clearly) can anyone explain... (please)
Another question is, what is the fastest speed anyone has had wifi running on the Desire S?
My new(ish) laptop manages to get a 300Mpbs wifi link to the new router! am I missing some configuration option?
Thanks
I've only had 72 mbps too, with a WNDR4000 -
I've tried setting the router's 2.4gHz to deliver it as fast as 300 mps or at 145 - makes no difference just 1.5 metres from the router.
I don't know if there's any way to set the Desire S to find the 5Ghz signal.
Disappointing
What do you use to check the speed ?
Edit : Also what is your normal broad band connection supposed to be?
I'm on 16 Mb line with Sky and phone pulls in at 8.21 Mbps over wifi
Just checked on WIFI settings on phone and for Sky it says 54Mbps with singal strength as excellent
i dont know much about this topic but have you tried setting the channel to auto, transmit power to 100%,turned on 802.11n?
As far as I'm aware, the Desire S is only officially wireless G protocol so 54mbps theoretical max.
However, it may be like the older HD2 which has, albeit by method of registry change, wireless N support.

[Q] Best ROM for ZTE Blade as Wifi Hotspot only?

I own Blade II and I am not currently using it so I thought I could use it as Wifi HotSpot for my Gnex and nexus 7. I live in Poland and we have here carrier Aero2 which is providing free internet access, you are paying only for sim card around 6$ and you can use free 512Kbps internet, it only works on 900Mhz 3G towers but blade is supporting this frequency. I would like to use my Blade strictly as Wifi Modem only and I am wondering which is best ROM and Wifi Tethering software for such a use. I would like to have decent battery life and true wifi connection, not AD-HOC which is provided by play store apps. I tried to underclock CPU to around 300Mhz and I was ok with tether speed, but native wifi tethering in GingerBread is still battery hog. Is there any 3rd party software with non Ad-hoc hotspot and good battery consumption? Which is best rom for saving battery? Best thing would be modded android with modem feature only but i don't think there is anything like that. Thanks for help and greetings from Poland
There's no such thing as a best ROM because everyone has different things they like in a ROM.
My best advice to you would be to just test out different ROMs and see which one you like the most.
