1.3.12
500MB of free space on first photo import
Cleanup UI in Windows non admin installation.
Fix infinite restart of Dropbox when database was corrupted.
Fix import error on iPhone with lots and lots of photos.
Better Handling of out of quota issues on first photo import.
Other small fixes
1.3 Features
Importing of photos from cameras, phones, and SD cards.
Batch upload/download of files.
Windows: http://dl-web.dropbox.com/u/17/Dropbox 1.3.12.exe
Mac OS X: http://dl-web.dropbox.com/u/17/Dropbox 1.3.12.dmg

Linux x86: http://dl-web.dropbox.com/u/17/dropbox-lnx.x86-1.3.12.tar.gz
Notes:
Clients 1.3.5 and earlier had an auto-update bug. Please install this version so that your client will stay up to date!
The photo import feature is not available on Mac 10.4 and Linux.
For Android devices, it's best to use "Connect as Disk Drive". HTC Sync will not work.
To import from iPhone, make sure to unlock your phone and enter your passcode before importing, otherwise it will claim to find no photos.
If importing from your iPhone on Mac gives an import error, try hard resetting it--hold down the power and the home button for 5 seconds. This will reboot the phone; it shouldn't change your settings or delete data.
On Windows, this feature relies on Autoplay. Please enable Autoplay to use this feature if you have disabled it.
On XP and Vista, it relies on the Windows Image Acquisition Service. If this service is not started, please start the service and reinstall Dropbox to use this feature. On WIndows Server, you may have to install the Desktop Experience feature.
On Windows 7, newer devices that rely on Device Stage (in the Control Panel) will not show Dropbox as an import option until you select "Change Program" for the default.
The Galaxy Nexus takes a lot of time to connect on OS X because it likes to pretend that every image on the device is a photograph. We now estimate how long it's going to take and show you that in the progress bar but it's usually in the order of minutes. We're working to see if this can be improved.
As usual, we strongly recommend making a backup of your Dropbox before upgrading to this build as we'll need a few weeks to be certain of its stability. We will rapidly release new builds as necessary to snipe the most common issues as they arise."

Fastest way (tip i saw on g+) is to use beta desktop client provided in first post with those blank videos (you can put any avi or mp4 video on usb as well as long as it is in the dcim/camera foler and has not been uploaded to dropbox before and note 'renaming does not work') and use autorun dropbox import function.
must connect in mass storage mode or just plug microsd card ( usb reader and external hard drive does work as long as you keep proper folder structure dcim/camera). allow import to complete then in dropbox client 'pause syncing'. go to dropbox 'camera uploads' folder and delete files. again in dropbox client 'resume syncing' and thats it.
you just maxed 5GB without wasting all that time and bandwith!
note:you must have at least 4.5GB in pics and videos plus that one initial picture
another note: your maximum in pics and videos you want to import can not be greater than total dropbox ammount available to you or it will fail to sync properly. so best keep it around 5 just in case.

Got my extra 5GB already. Swhueet. My only worry is if Dropbox catch on; which they will. What will they do about it? Could they track who has been given large amounts of space, but not made any real difference in space in their online accounts? Could easily take the space back off us.

Did you happen to try it through your computer? Connecting your phone through USB and having dropbox give you the option to import to dropbrox, I believe through AutoPlay. Because I'm not getting an AutoPlay pop up when I connect my phone to the computer so I can't figure out how to do the import. I'm using USB mass storage mode (pulling down the shade and clicking Select to copy files...). Anyone else not getting the pop-up when you connect?
EDIT: My bad.... didn't realize AutoPlay was something that could be disabled and apparently is was disabled on my computer (though I don't remember doing that). Just hit the Windows button and type "autoplay", open it up and click the checkbox at the top.
Also, thanks for the tip!

i know im thinking over switching from dropbox to box.net myself do they have same install kit like dropbox and what not?

Doesn't box have an upload limit of 100mb or something like that? I need to upload a few large files that's why I was interested in dropbox.
So does anyone know if the beta promo is still running?

@theos0o best known for modding Skype from sgs forum has found a way to patch dropbox client into thinking we have regular htc phone, giving us aditional 3gb free for a year here

Last chance to get 5GB. New beta just came out that takes effect today, that lowers 5GB to 3GB.
"Yo ho ho, and a bottle of code!
We wanted to say a special thanks to all of our early beta users! Thanks to your feedback, we have been able to find and fix a bunch of bugs.
Starting today, new users of Camera Upload will get 500 MB after their first successful import. Users can also receive up to a total of 3 GB additional free space for photos and videos automatically uploaded via the desktop or mobile apps.
Forum build users who tested Camera Upload before today, either on the desktop or Android, will keep any additional storage space they received for trying the beta version, and will still be able to earn up to 5 GB."

@theos0o strikes again!
Now bringing 23GB free for 2 years. Deal with dropbox and new HTC devices.

Is that forever, though? The free 16GB I have from SugarSync is for 'life' as I understand it. If you upload 5GB once, does that give you 5GB forever, or if you delete files does it get removed from the availability?
As far as I know, the only temporary promos dropbox has are the ones with HTC 3GB/48GB respectively, for 12 months.
These should be yours for life*.

I believe that you have mixed deal that Box has with LG,HP and Apple, which is not the same as the deal that Dropbox has with HTC.
Anyways! These credits are here to stay so it's OK to delete uploads. Beside 7GB + with Dropbox is way more valuable than 50GB with Box with their 100mb limit one by one uploads and borderline impossible one by one downloads.

Well you should continue and get all you can. Of top of my head, use it for what they are giving these 5GB for. AUTO UPLOAD and simultaneous cloud as well as pc backup of your pics and videos without compromising pics resolution, videos being limited only by the free space on dropbox. Yes I'm looking at you google+ /picasa and box.net. Not bad for syncing Titanium backup with it as well.

Free Box 50GB for all devices till 23.03.2012

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.box.android
Box.com now allows all devices to have 50GB for free till 23.03.2012.
Hurry up !
this is actually not as good as you think it is. There is a small "per file" upload limit (i dont recall what the actual limit is) and you still need to pay to use the windows-based program. They basically just upgraded you to 50GB and you need to pay for everything else. Unless you were to use another program to autosync your folders, then i can see that.
sugarsync or dropbox is still better, IMO>
I'd still say go for it. Box's native SimpleShare client (Windows and Mac) is a great middle-man client. I would much rather have 50Gb of space in one spot instead of juggling between several ~2Gb services.
Of course the obvious downside is lack of explorer integration, but it is possible to mount your box.net drive as a network share and use it that way. SimpleShare also has hotkeys for rapid uploading plus some cool screenshot tools.
Overall I wouldn't discount this offer.
Thnx

i'm not complaining about 50GB of free space either but there are many other choices out there. I actually paid for my 35GB with sugarsync and my experience is 1000x better. If you are comfortable with Box, then more power to you. I'd rather pay for better experience but thats just me.

[Video Guide] Samba Filesharing for Android - Share your SD Card over a Network

Samba Filesharing for Android - Share your SD Card over a Home Network (ROOT Required)
Hi there. I thought I'd share another video with you all...
If you hate using a USB cable to transfer files from your phone's SD Card
(or FAT32 internal storage) to your PC, a Samba file sharing server is arguably
one of the best solutions - assuming you have a rooted phone, that is....
In this video, I go through the basic steps of configuring the server on your
phone, as well as the stages required to connect to your device over a home
network.
Viewable in full resolution (up to 1080p) here: http://youtu.be/gX3etC8X1ys
Play Store link to the app is here: http://market.android.com/details?id=com.funkyfresh.samba
Minimum Requirements (from developer):
- Android device running Android 2.0.1 or above
- The phone must be rooted
- You should have Superuser 2.3.6.1 or later installed
Specification of demo equipment:
- Rooted HTC Sensation running Android 4.0.3 (ICS)
- Superuser v3.0.7 (Su binary v3.0.3.2)
- Samba Filesharing Build: 111107m
- Windows 7 PC (x64)
Note for NON ROOTED viewers:
If you don't have a rooted phone, you may want to consider using the FTP server method instead. I've created a video for that method here: http://youtu.be/TwjYm7fWwB8.
*** HELP & FAQ: ***
Additional Operating System Support (coming soon):
-Windows Vista (method shown in video should work)
-Windows XP (pending...)
-Mac OS X:
I don't currently have a Mac to test this on, but I think the following should work:
a) Press Command+K to launch the “connect to server” dialogue
b) Enter smb://ANDROID (or use the format smb://ServerName)
c) Click on the “+” icon if you want to save as a favourite
d) Press Connect
e) Enter your Username and Password when prompted & press connect again
f) You should then be able to browse the contents of your phone as a local folder.
Assigning a Drive Letter:
Assigning a drive letter to your phone's SD card is not something that I recommend as a standard procedure over the network - for most people it will just lead to headaches. Having said that, I can see a small handful of situations (like certain sync software) where it might be helpful. Assuming that the Samba Server is up and running on your phone, your SD Card can be allocated a drive letter by using the Map Network Drive Wizard in Windows.
1) In the Map Network Drive Wizard - select a drive letter
2) Click the 'Browse' button
3) Navigate to the phone's SD Card, select it and press OK.
4) I recommend that you un-check the option to reconnect at logon
5) Press finish. Job done.
More help coming soon....
*** TROUBLESHOOTING ***
App Hangs when Starting / Stopping the Server:
When testing this app, I initially experienced this issue myself. In my case, the phone would report that the app had stopped responding, but if I tapped 'Wait' (instead of 'Close') at the prompt, the server would fire up shortly afterwards.
The problem turned out to be linked with the version of 'SuperSU' that I was using. SuperSU is a great new superuser management tool by the developer Chainfire (and has now replaced 'Superuser' in some ROM's like ARHD). However, for the purpose of this video, I switched back to 'Superuser', which solved the problem immediately.
I didn't spend a huge amount of time trying to find a fix my problem with SuperSU, so there may be a simple solution that I overlooked. I need to look into this some more. If anyone already has an answer, please feel free to drop me a line.
Developer's FAQ & Help:
A number of common issues are listed on the developer's page here: http://www.sites.google.com/site/funkyfreshapps/
I'll add more info when I can.
Enjoy!
Bugsy.
i have set it up and it is working nicely..
only comment that its not really fast..for large size files its not really handy.. the max write speed i got is around 2mb/s
I have problems making the USB Mass storage working so this App is perfect it's just to bad I'm also getting only 2 MB/sec even with a really good rooter. (netgear WNDR3700v3)
edit : For the record copying from my desktop to my laptop goes at 5.7MB/sec
This app is sooooo good. brilliant! Speed not the best but i can still copy a 400mb rom in about 2 minutes and i can stream 20mbps hd video with no problem.
oh and there was an update for superSU today that fixes the lag/freeze problem. happy days

nice video too by the way. sorry i forgot to say
Hi guys,
Apologies for taking a while to respond - I got called away for a couple of days.
I find the Samba file sharing method to be generally more responsive than the FTP method that I showed in my last video. However, transfer speeds are indeed a bit slower (I personally get about 2.5 - 3MB/sec at best). Hopefully future releases will offer some improvements, but there will be limitations to how far those improvements can go with our Sensation’s.
Because the Sensation supports wireless 802.11n, it’s not uncommon for people to believe that they will achieve a 150/300Mbps connection with a wireless n router. Unfortunately that isn’t the case though. I may be wrong, but I think the Sensation uses the Broadcom BCM4329 chip for Wifi & Bluetooth, which will offer offering a peak link speed somewhere in the region of 65Mbps. That is of course a theoretical maximum. Realistic speeds for most people (regardless of the method you use) will rarely top 50-60% of that (about 4-5MB/Sec).
If you want to check your own phone’s link speed, you can do so by pressing the menu button and going SETINGS > WIFI > then tap on the name of your connection. If you’re below 65Mbps there may be room for improvement.
All in all, I do find Samba Filesharing worthy of consideration, but it won’t be blisteringly fast if you want to empty your card of a few gigabytes worth of photos and videos.
Cheers,
Bugsy.
Wow - very cool!
just wanted to let you know on the Mac front, all your instructions are perfect but you only need to use smb://ANDROID <-- not with the /sdcard addition - mac automatically mounts the sdcard folder. works perfectly though, fantastic for small files!
Thanks

if you want as an alternative solution for file sharing between your device and pc you can use team viewer app
Thx for your answer.
What I actually need is to play music from my phone on the home network.
I made a network with xp on my laptop. I connected my WD live media hub on that network.
So now I can reach the laptop files from the WD player but I'd like to connect my android as well...

I just use WellFTP Server 2.4.3. It's also free from the market. I don't remember what speeds I got as I rarely use it but it wasn't too bad. Will test it later on and post back if I remember

How do you backup your photos?

Hi, for the past year I've been backing up my photos/videos automatically with DropBox. Unfortunately my 18GB of space is going to be full soon.
I tried Google Photo's auto backup, which says it offers unlimited space if the photo is not bigger than 1080p and 2048px, but my Nexus 5's photo's are always 2448 x 3264, I think it's because HDR is enabled.
So I can't use Google Photo's auto backup as it will fill up all my free space anyways, + the auto backup isn't as reliable as DropBox, it keeps stopping every time my phones screen turns off.
What should I do?

Yes but I was hoping there would be a way to have access to all my photos on my phone and not have it take up all the space on my phone.
The best part about Google Photo's it shows a cached version on your phone.

I use Google Photos but I haven't reached the limit yet. I also use One Drive wich syncs with my windows computer. I actually have a lot of cloud services and I don't know why. lol. Dropbox, Box, Googe Photos, One Drive. You can probably buy more storage from Google if you need it. Otherwise, just make room on Google photos by moving some stuff to your computer or use different cloud services. Not really anything else you can do if you are out of space.

I don't mind paying the $1.99/m for 100GB via Google.
Does Google Photos auto backup automatically free up space on your phone after it backups photos/videos? or would I still have to manually delete it from my phone?

You still have to manually delete them
My photos get uploaded to my own Server at home.
Therefor I know who can see them and I have enough storage (4TB is enough)
To do this I run an instance of Owncloud on Ubuntu Server.

Interesting, I have lots of spare 1TB drives at home from work.
Gonna look into OwnCloud now, never heard of it before.
Hopefully it's possible to set it up on the spare Raspberry PI's I have at home.
I think Ubuntu (or any other Linux) can run on a Raspberry Pi. So you should be able to set up Owncloud.
But remember: The Server has to be online almost 24/7 (except the time you sleep).
I also use more powerful Hardware (Intel Atom Dual-Core) and also host my own File Server, Calendar and Contacts Sync Server, Webserver, DLNA Server and News Aggregator.
I'm almost independent from any third Party cloud services. I just like to know where my data is
But believe me. It really was hard work to learn how to set up Ubuntu Server with all those services. It was a long process of learning until I got to this state to run it all safe and energy efficient while keeping it reliable.

I have a tasker task that runs when I close any of my camera apps. It looks for new photos taken in the last 15 minutes then moves them to a new folder. Then I trigger a FolderSync task to SFTP those photos to my NAS.

free google photos storage tutorial

download the xmlpack from the magisk module repo and install it, upon reboot you should see the message saying you have unlimited storage until 2022 if you upload with original quality
figure this would help some peeps out
Thanks! I tried this and it does work EDIT - unfortunately does not seem to work. If you check the google photos page on a desktop (non-mobile) it still reflects that original quality photos are counting towards my allocation even though it says original quality uploads are free on my phone. So the mod tricks the phone into thinking it is a Pixel 3, but the google servers are not fooled.
How does this work and is it potentially fraudulent?

Nothing so drastic as changing what your system thinks is the device.
Adds a bunch of xml files to:
/system/etc/permissions
which changes the features permissions for a number of additional devices. The ones that begin with "pixel" you might find interesting...

This does not work. It'll say you have free photo backup but it will still take storage space.

Are you sure new files are adding to the used storage number?
It won't "undo" used storage for photos that are already loaded prior to installing the mod. I guess you could remove them from google photos and then upload them again after doing this mod, but I haven't tried that to know if it would work.

Confirmed that it doesn't work.
It will take up storage space if the settings is at original quality.
If I change it to high quality on the website (there is no option to change in the app), the app will only upload high quality pictures, not original size.
Actually, in the Google photos app, click on Assistant tab, there is a assistant card saying "Free storage at original Quality has expired" message.
I honestly don't know if it is working for me or not, but in my Google pictures app /settings/backups and sync, it shows my account and it says "photos and videos uploaded from your pixel prior to 2/1/2022 get unlimited free storage at original quality". Plus, there is no card saying it has expired.

It shows the same message to me but it will upload original quality only if you change to original quality on the google photos webpage and it will count against your storage space.
If you select high quality on the google photos webpage, it will still say this same message in the google photos app (Photos& Videos uploaded from your pixel before 2/1/2022 get unlimited free storage at original quality), but all the upload will be in high quality mode, not original.
In the Assistant tab of the google photos app, there is a card with message "Free storage at Original quality has expired, New items will backup in High quality (reduced file sixpza, free unlimited storage). Items uploaded before Feb 1,2022 will remain free at Original quality."
Tested on two pixel 3as with two different accounts.

You are right.
I finally took some time to look at the non-mobile google photo page and discovered exactly what you said...... Photos seem to be uploading at original quality, but are counting towards my storage allotment. It says I can upload high quality and have unlimited storage.
Oh well. I will uninstall this mod and edit my posts in this thread to reflect the fact that it actually doesn't work.
I'll just pay to upgrade my storage when I run out. It won't be long......
Surely it's easier to just pay £1.59 a month for 100GB. Can't even buy a beer for that!
