[Q] Zapping and Extended Life Battery... should I root? - Verizon Droid Charge

Hello All,
I've got a Droid X with the handy and convenient one-click root method Z4root. However, my wife's Droid Charge is an entirely different story. So far I haven't rooted it because I'm hoping to use that as a last resort (I don't want to brick her phone).
She was having some trouble with battery life, so she bought a Samsung extended life battery. Instead of her phone dying within 4 hours of a full charge it could make it pretty much all day. But this week all of a sudden, even with that, she's back down to 6 hours, if that.
Early on when she got the phone I downloaded Advanced Task Killer for her and gave her some basic tips (low brightness, no mobile data, etc.), but I'm at a loss. I'm not sure if it's the GB update or what. I'm almost ready to root her phone and roll it back to Froyo because I think that's part of the problem, but I'm at a loss. Do you guys have any suggestions? Or is rooting, battery calibrating, and cleaning out bloatware my only option? I'd appreciate any help. Thanks Droid experts!!!

Don't use advanced task killer first of all. It will probably reduce battery life. GB update has made the battery better in all situations.

Whether or not to root is really up to you however if you do decide to root it is actually quite easy to root EP4D(the latest OTA update). Here is an easy to follow write up that I did:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1434738
Personally I rooted my phone and I have loved it. When I was using stock rom debloating did help some with my battery life. The biggest difference I found however when when I flashed eclipse and imnuts pbj EP4D kernel on to my phone. Eclipse is an awesome rom that is already debloated and has been tweaked to run super smooth. Imnuts pbj kernel has lots of great performance and power saving features(for example the ability to undervolt). Running stock I would get about 8 hours of moderate use from my standard battery(1600mah) and 4 hours of heavy use. Running Eclipse with imnuts kernel I get 18-20 hours moderate use and 8-10 hours heavy use.

calibrating the battery would probably help. id check to see whats running; gps, wifi, bt, etc. also it could be a rogue app that is sucking up all the juice. juice defender could help and if u have no use for location apps u can go into setting/location and turn off stand alone gps, google location, and vzw location. but def root the phone and put a custom kernel and rom on the phone, there will be a big difference.

I find that Facebook often runs rampant and needs to be told to stfu constantly. Also, a custom kernel with aggressive undervolting will help too.

I agree, and you'd think with all that money they're worth and throwing around that they could make an app that doesn't GARGLE TESTICLES

I've only heard it drains the battery....
it works on many phones but not as good as actually modifying the rom. i had some roms that juice defender had no improvement on because they were fine tuned not to drain battery in the first place. it's not bad for a stock phone but as roms become better it will do less.
I installed JuiceDefender and JuicePlotter. Graphed several hours with JD on, and several hours with JD off.
JD-off won. Uninstalled both.
same here, not heard real good things about it
I have it installed on my Infuse. Installed JuiceDefender Plus and left it on Balenced Mode. Had it for about a week now and its helped my battery big time. I only charge it once at night now. I was skeptical at first cause the free beta version wasnt doing anything. But once I got the Plus version. Its a HUGE difference.
What it does is kicks off your mobile network while the phone is asleep. And it turns it back every 15 minutes quickly. So you can get your synced apps to sync like Mail etc. But if your using the phone a lot, the battery is still gonna drain quick while your using it. But while the phone is asleep and your not using it, its conserving battery life big time. Turning the mobile network off. You will still get calls and texts. They have different modes in it, I just left it balenced. It has aggressive to and lets you adjust everything. Worth the money in my opinion. Big time!
Not worth the money. 2.2 does a good enough job at keeping battery good. I would rely on roms (once more beefed up roms are available) for system tweaks and so forth

Battery Life

Have one of these, rooted, stock rom on Rogers (LTE).
The battery life seems inconsistent... Some days it seems fine but days like today with 11 hours off the charger, with the two highest battery culprits being android OS (46%) and android system (16%) the battery life is already at 26%.
Other days when its on my desk it uses nowhere near as much...

If you are rooted and not afraid of flashing ROMs than get BeastMOD ROM. The name says it all. I m heavy user and i go for a day with full charge.

You talking about the TMo version? I did a search and I cant find a Skyrocket or Rogers version of a BeastMOD ROM.
BTW I get have been getting 34-37 hrs @ 20-15% on the BoneSTOCKeteer-v1.0 ROM with med to light use. Your mileage may vary, but stock ROM only lasted a day with the same use.
edit: the more you play with/use your phone the faster the battery is going to peter out no matter the ROM
I noticed that wifi has a big impact on battery life. I hit about 50% of battery life with it on in about 5 hours but with it off and moderate use I can get 2 days use.
Just a thought and I froze lots of the SNS syncing apps with TB. I dont use those since i use another program for FB.
I actually like the ATT Smart Wifi app. Shuts down wifi when not in use. I think the free version of Juice Defender doesn't do that.
I have now owned my 727R for 6 weeks, coming from an iphone 4. I am finding the battery life inconsistent from charge to charge and anywhere from barely adequate to downright poor. Maximum I have ever gotten was 26 hours with minimal use and minimum has been 10 hours with minimal use.
I have installed and use Juice defender, and have looked at a variety of apps such as cpu spy, cpu hound, traffic monitor. I have turned off notification as much as possible and all other tricks under the sun.
My phone does not seem to go to deep sleep often and a lot of times it shows as awake even though the screen was off for a while.
The straw that broke the camle was when I cmpared notes with my clleague who has a Galaxy S (I know, no 4g, no LTE, smaller csreen). But he is getting 90% battery life with wifi and bluetooth on after 7 hours 15 minutes (minimal use). In the same time period I am down to 60% with bluetooth off!
I am not planning on rooting the phone and using custom ROMS or Kernels right now.
What gives? What do I look at to improve battery life?
Thanks
i notice with out a lot of changes i get horrible horrible battery life. but with a custom rom like quick wiz. i turn screen down. wifi off. under clock it and use a battery saver plus task killer i get two days moderet (use

I would suggest since Roger stock rom sucks the life out of the battery to root it and use faux123 kernel and Gideon's script to under clock it. Im using at&t stock rom rooted and faux123 kernel and I haven't had a bad battery day yet.. currently 12hrs moderate use 73% still.... not bad at all. Give it a try.. its not like it could any worse lol

It looks like this isn't available for Skyrocket.
1) Does it work like it should, and does it save battery, or is the battery savings negated by other junk running with it in the background? Reviews seem very mixed.
2) If you got it on a SR, how? Would pulling the APK from another device work?

I hated my skyrocket when I first got it because the battery sucked. Never could make it through a full day of average use. I did a search, found out how to root and install a custom rom and now I love it. I can go a full day and still have 20% left. All I can recommend is rooting and at least remove bloatware. I've never seen a single skyrocket user happy with their battery life on stock. Maybe sell or trade it for another iPhone.

ROM suggestion

My fiance has had her charge for a while now and she is starting to get fed up with the battery life and lag. We have gone as card as turning off the 4g but she is still unable to make it through the day on a cullen charge with very little use. What rom would be best for improved battery life while maintaining the look and feel of touchwiz?
Thanks

I would say your best bet is eclipse or tweak stock. Not really touchwiz but very great roms.
Eclipse thread can be found here
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1449643
Tweakstock you'll see in development section.

I recommend using eclipse or tweakstock for a rom. But you may want to just try imnuts custom kernel first and under volt the cpu. http://rootzwiki.com/topic/137-01-30-12peanutbutta-jelly-time/ That would improve the battery. If you're still not satisfied then try a rom with the kernel.
If you phone is ROOTED. You can download "battery saver" by Antutu from the Market(free) and try out for 2 days. This may help you with your battery without too much hassle.

I would recommend not doing that. I downloaded it and it broke the radio until i factory reset. The app is not made for this phone

What!! I'm running it right now with Tweakstock and PBJ kernel and it really really save me battery big time. I have tried to under volt, and turning off 4G, lower screen settings etc.. not help. Max I can get is 6-9hrs. After installed this, I hit 15 hrs normal use and 20hrs light usage. It controlled the CPU frequency and put my phone in very deep sleep. If I just make 1hrs of total calls and 20-30 text I can hit 20hrs easily. If I used Facebook heavily (65% screen on, about 3hrs total), I get 6-8hrs. Something is funky with your setup. During testing I uninstalled and reinstalled this app couple times and never any issue. Do me a favor while you're back to fresh stock, rooted and pop it back on see if it's working. I'm happy to provide screen shots if you don't believe me.
BTW, I have wifi,4g,gps on 24/7. While I'm in my house it automatically used wifi and when I'm out on the road it switched to 4g automatically. The samsung factory feature is working fine too.
Thanks for all the suggestions. I think I might give tweak stock a try
Sent from my MB870 using XDA App
The last few ROMs I tried, Tweakstock, Infinity, Gummy...all were very laggy. Didn't seem to matter what I did or how I did it. Camera was always a crap shoot on whether it would freeze up or not. I finally said the hell with it and went back to stock and then just plain rooted it. So far so good. It sucks cause I hate TW and the look of stock...but at least the phone is responsive.
Try Eclipse
You should really give Eclipse ROM a try. It is extremely smooth and fast....very responsive and the devs and community over at the site are very helpful if you run into problems. Yesterday, with light use, my phone was at 60% (15h 11m 25s on battery) at the end of the day. Best battery life I have ever gotten out of my Charge yet. Give it a try....you will not be disappointed.
Sounds more like something with the way you are flashing and/or your data restore. I would suggest that if you ever flash anything again you start from a totally clean slate
Charged up post!
I did flash from a clean slate multiple times, first few days the new builds seemed OK. After awhile it just got worse and worse. I've been on the rooted stock build for over two weeks and it still is pretty good. I'm done tweaking this phone, I'll have an upgrade option in May and then I will probably get the Nexus or wait a bit if something else worthwhile is coming soon.

[Q] Battery Life rooted

I am looking for a rom that handle me using my phone all day and not dying. I would love to find a rom that possibly allowed you to turn off the lte or whatever. As long as i dont have to charge my phone 3 times a day. Can anyone help me out?
many topics posted on this, the search feature is ur friend
My opinion
Seanscreams skyscreamsandwich rom has excellent battery life, I think if you try that with the new UCLA kernel you'll be very happy.
I have the stock Rogers ROM, rooted with CWM installed. I installed updated stock UCLA radio and kernel last week to get the benefits of latest kernel. Worked great but I've never been thrilled with battery life so Saturday I flashed Faux kernel v. 9m I think it was, on top of stock ROM and new updated stock radio.
Installed Set CPU to control new scalable speed kernel. I'm not easy to impress but it's absolutely unbelievable. Set to a conservative profile I've got blazing speed and 50% better battery life after 2 days use.
Go for it but don't do any playing before installing custom recovery ( CWM) and making a Nandroid backup.

The Skyrocket has respectable battery life, consideeing its LTE and 4.5",screen. A ROM is not yoir solution to getting extended battery life out of your phone. While some ROMs are more battery friendly than others, there are better alternatives. Juice Defender seems to be really popular and successful at prolonging battery life.

Needless to say before any of that is done, you wanna make sure the following is done first:
1. Make sure your phone is rooted and have Clockwork mod setup.
2. Do a nandroid backup.
Hope this helps.

Best rom on battery saver

Does any one know what is the best rom to save more battery or the best kernel. Now i have gb 2.3.6 here is an screenshot

Look at the guide in the first link of my signature. The ROM's listed (icbinb included) coupled with AntonX's kernel and one of the tweaks, I think, will give you the best combo available to us.
Remember to keep wifi and sync off when not using. Use Gemini App Manager or similar app from market to stop apps from unnecessarily starting when you don't need them to. If you don't use wifi calling remove or freeze the app along with other apps you don't use. Read about undervolting your phone. I feel like that has helped me.
Thanks a lot...

I run the latest version of Valhalla black(not FB) and I can get a day's use no problem. Looking at my phone now, it has 8 battery left and is at 18hr 41m. This isnt right as I took it off the charger at 8am this morning and its 2:30am now. Hasnt been on charger since, so thats pretty good in my book. I leave Wifi on, but it only connects when I'm home. I did a full shift of work, 8-5 on 4g. Heavy texting, some web browsing and small time on other apps, downloaded some apps. Just all basic use of my smartphone. I never had to worry about the battery on this rom. Use the music app to play music through my car during commute. Yeah, this is what I would suggest to use as a rom. I have been on Valhalla for a few months now. Only thing that is weird is random reboots. Which only happen... maybe once a week. It doesnt affect anything, well, not anything to my knowledge or the basic use of my phone. So yeah, results may vary but give it a shot!
Thats pretty good.... I charge my phone two time a day... May be bad battery.... But i think that i need to change my rom first...
Sent from my SGH-T959V using Tapatalk
I'd say Hebrew Valhalla with atonx's latest kernel and undervolting has had the best battery life for me. I can easily get through the whole way with moderate to heavy use while still having 50% battery left when its time to go to bed. As long as you don't change the localizations, its completely in English so think of it as Valhalla final but updated. I love it!
