Battery Life - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Have one of these, rooted, stock rom on Rogers (LTE).
The battery life seems inconsistent... Some days it seems fine but days like today with 11 hours off the charger, with the two highest battery culprits being android OS (46%) and android system (16%) the battery life is already at 26%.
Other days when its on my desk it uses nowhere near as much...

If you are rooted and not afraid of flashing ROMs than get BeastMOD ROM. The name says it all. I m heavy user and i go for a day with full charge.

You talking about the TMo version? I did a search and I cant find a Skyrocket or Rogers version of a BeastMOD ROM.
BTW I get have been getting 34-37 hrs @ 20-15% on the BoneSTOCKeteer-v1.0 ROM with med to light use. Your mileage may vary, but stock ROM only lasted a day with the same use.
edit: the more you play with/use your phone the faster the battery is going to peter out no matter the ROM

I noticed that wifi has a big impact on battery life. I hit about 50% of battery life with it on in about 5 hours but with it off and moderate use I can get 2 days use.
Just a thought and I froze lots of the SNS syncing apps with TB. I dont use those since i use another program for FB.

I actually like the ATT Smart Wifi app. Shuts down wifi when not in use. I think the free version of Juice Defender doesn't do that.

I have now owned my 727R for 6 weeks, coming from an iphone 4. I am finding the battery life inconsistent from charge to charge and anywhere from barely adequate to downright poor. Maximum I have ever gotten was 26 hours with minimal use and minimum has been 10 hours with minimal use.
I have installed and use Juice defender, and have looked at a variety of apps such as cpu spy, cpu hound, traffic monitor. I have turned off notification as much as possible and all other tricks under the sun.
My phone does not seem to go to deep sleep often and a lot of times it shows as awake even though the screen was off for a while.
The straw that broke the camle was when I cmpared notes with my clleague who has a Galaxy S (I know, no 4g, no LTE, smaller csreen). But he is getting 90% battery life with wifi and bluetooth on after 7 hours 15 minutes (minimal use). In the same time period I am down to 60% with bluetooth off!
I am not planning on rooting the phone and using custom ROMS or Kernels right now.
What gives? What do I look at to improve battery life?
Thanks

i notice with out a lot of changes i get horrible horrible battery life. but with a custom rom like quick wiz. i turn screen down. wifi off. under clock it and use a battery saver plus task killer i get two days moderet (use

I would suggest since Roger stock rom sucks the life out of the battery to root it and use faux123 kernel and Gideon's script to under clock it. Im using at&t stock rom rooted and faux123 kernel and I haven't had a bad battery day yet.. currently 12hrs moderate use 73% still.... not bad at all. Give it a try.. its not like it could any worse lol

It looks like this isn't available for Skyrocket.
1) Does it work like it should, and does it save battery, or is the battery savings negated by other junk running with it in the background? Reviews seem very mixed.
2) If you got it on a SR, how? Would pulling the APK from another device work?

I hated my skyrocket when I first got it because the battery sucked. Never could make it through a full day of average use. I did a search, found out how to root and install a custom rom and now I love it. I can go a full day and still have 20% left. All I can recommend is rooting and at least remove bloatware. I've never seen a single skyrocket user happy with their battery life on stock. Maybe sell or trade it for another iPhone.

Which kernel am I running?

Hey all, quick question hopefully you all can help me out with. I am currently having terrible battery issues ever since I flashed my phone initially. Terrible as in 6 hours stand-by my phone would be dead.
Anyhow, I am just trying to figure out who's (which) kernel I am running. The kernel version is 2.6.35.7-I997RUXKG3-CL366622 . I have done searches but biggest problem is, threads usually do not post the version number for me to check what I am running.
I am on Infused 2.1.0 (thx GTG!), but battery life has been garbage on all ROMs so I am certain that is not the issue. Can anyone let me know, me love you long time.

Problem is I bought 2 extra batteries and get exact same life. When I initially bought the phone I would get a days use surprisingly. After that, I have had nothing but god awful drain. I have had almost a dozen android phones and have never encountered such terrible battery life.
I do not have fetch data enabled/gps/widget updates or anything that would normally keep the processor/data churning while in my pocket. Battery use is usually around 40-80% on display, all other categories being minimal (which seems correct).
I'm banging my head on this one, I appreciate you guys replying to my thread

1% per 3 hours standby is FREAKING AWESOME..!!!!
Maybe u have some stray app in the background that's using CPU/whatever it is that's eating up ur battery.
Some subtle things u cud try since u said display is taking up 40-80% of battery:
1. Turning off screen auto rotation, turning it on when needed
2. Turning off auto brightness, turning it on to auto when needed
Use SetCPU like people above pointed out and this would let u see what processor states ur phone is spending most time in.
It sounds like for some people, Infusion 1.1 really flakes out. No clue why. I don't overclock so I don't run it.
It's either Infusion 1.1 flaked out, or if you continue having problems with other kernels, you have a rogue app.
Kernels rarely make any significant difference in battery life unless they're broken.

Running Infusion-GB 1.1 and Infused 2.1.0: I get 1% drain every 3 hours on standby with radio on (reasonable H+ reception) and 1% every 6 hours on flight mode.
It's most likely a defect in your phone or a configuration issue. You really have to be using your phone for at least 4 or 5 hours (screen-on time) over those 6 hours to cut through battery that fast.

when you go to settings > applications > running services - is there anything there that looks like it shouldn't be there?
i know that there is a process that starts with an "o" that is tied into media hub's protected content (DRM) - eats a ton of battery, and isn't really necessary.
it's also possible that you have the SNS service going, but constantly in a restarting state. this seemed to eat a lot of battery also.
otherwise, i'd do what others have suggested and monitor with CPU spy, and i'd also suggest an app called Better Battery Stats (not available in the market - find it here on XDA by a developer named chamonix). this will let you know if you have any wakelocks that are preventing your phone from reaching deep sleep when it is idle.
definitely sounds like you could have a wakelock or 2 interfering with your phone trying to get into those lower frequencies.
wipe battery stats?

Packets in/out isn't what you want unless you also have unusual data usage too. It's wakelock stats you want - look at the BetterBatteryStats app. It used to be only on XDA but apparently it's on the market now.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again - Wiping battery stats does NOTHING on our phone. Don't go blindly telling people to do something on our devices just because it worked on another device. The fuel gauge chip on GalaxyS series phones works in a very different way than HTC phones. (Exception: I think the GSII has a more traditional fuel gauge.)

How to save battery on nexus S

Hello there..
i just rooted my nexus S 9020T..i flashed CyanogenMod-7-08312011-NIGHTLY-NS,Build number GRJ90,Android version 2.3.5
my problem is the battery keep draining faster..
fully charged at 7.00AM..10% at 4.00PM

Juice defender is a waste IMO. You could try an undervolted kernel like matr1x or Trinity.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium
I suggest teuv kernel by Trinity, best battery life I've seen.
The nexus is a battery hog, especially with all kinds of background apps people have like whatsapp and facebook. If you get Trinity, follow instructions and you wont news any outside monitoring app as the kernel is very good about ram and CPU allotment

There are numerous ways to increase battery life. Firstly, you(Android) do not need battery apps and task managers/killers.
Secondly, try this.

any other tips how to save battery longer??
Any further tips after a new kernel and rom would be cutting on the use of the phone and are therefore meh. I want to use the phone, not use it less.
So Trinity is better than Netarchy???, what about Pete #5 which is built in Formels MIUI, so far this is the best Rom I have tried on my NS, stable and fast+good battery compared to the others, also I have my phone OC at 1.2G via Setcpu.
Set wifi sleep policy to never.
Turn off auto brightness
Turn off sync and just refresh your gmail manually when you need to and refresh your contacts from time to time. You still get app updates from the market with sync turned off.
Go through all your apps that update regularly (facespace, twitter etc.) and reduce the sync frequency to something that is acceptable for you. I don't need my twitter updating every 15 minutes and can just manually sync whenever I want.
EDIT: Turn off NFC.
... and buy one or two of these: http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-1440m...TUEW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1316132022&sr=8-1
Make sure to condition them properly - it really makes a difference.
Wifi Sleep Policy to never fixed alot of my battery issues
Turning off NFC will do nothing as NFC does only consume power (like GPS) when used.

PROTIP: Stop using the phone so much. None of these tips are going to do squat if you're using the screen and wifi/3G all day.
Trust me on this. I easily get 12+ hours of use with battery to spare (usually around 30-40%) with the following usage:
NOTE: Matr1x Kernel with the stock undervolting settings, and TSM Pool Party ROM running on top.
The screen is on (a little over 1/4 brightness) with wifi/3g blasting, surfing bright white web pages for about 2-3 hours total. I may play 30 minutes of Furious Neornithes D), screw around on the market for a few minutes, check FB updates, etc. I also probably take/make about 10 short phone calls and send/receive about 50 texts. The remaining time, the phone sits in standby.
Not bad, considering the phone is beefier than most home computers from 10 years ago. Also worth noting: The battery scale isn't the most accurate thing in the world. Battery percentage drops off sharply up until about 60%, where it seems to level off.
So what's the best kernel to use???, Trinity or Trinity UV?, Netarchy?, Matrix?, is not only about the battery but also stability, doesn't matter if u can make ur phone last forever if u can't use BT while browsing cause the thing crashes so u either have to use one or the other.
As this is the save battery thread, there's only one answer: lowest voltage trinity kernel.

No more battery woes

One of my biggest woes ever since i switched to gb was battery. I have been tirelessly searching for the best performance +battery rom out there. While i do value battery life,i dont wanna compromise on perf! I have tried out almost all stock based,i9000 based roms,cm7,n many releases of miui.cm7 n miui are the best performers out there for obvious reasons.but I really like the customizations of miui, n so tend to stick with miui more. Battery life is pretty good on galnet miui stable editions, but nowhere as good as froyo! But galnet, combined with a battery saving app green power, just works wonders 4 me! This is not a flame thread, nor fanboyism, just some knowledge sharing.
check this out, my best battery setup yet.
daily use rom- galnet miui stable 2.9.23 +glitch 12b3 smartass gov. +kg3 modem. battery lasting for 21 hours.
cell standby- very poor,~15-18%no signal, inside factory. this accounts for 50%of my battery drain.
display- 1.5hrs,
no wifi,3g on the whole time, but data controlled by green power.
call around 20mins, gaming around 20 mins, online videos ~15-20 mins.
some texting
oc to 1.2g +heavy uv using glitch 12b3.
Screenshots below.
Ps-if instead of 3g,I switch to 2g the whole time,I still have ~30%left by now.
if I am in a good signal area, this rom will easily last me 1.5 days. kudos to both green power n galnet.
EDIT: Actually, screen on time may have been more along the lines of 2hrs, looking at the battery monitor graph. i cant read from miui standard battery history because i had 2 restart my phone once, so it doesnt show correct unplugged times.
wherecan I find this green power app you speak of?
MIUI 1.10.14, NEO 17r18 with v51 script set to smartass/powersave, OC to 1200 mhz. No apps that disable network connections (think Juice Defender).
Things turned off:
Auto rotate
Auto Brightness
Use wireless network(under location)
Auto sync
Proxy setup
Things left on
Data
Background data
Wifi and bt when not at work
Things deleted/ frozen
Telocation.apk
Live wallpaper apps
Market updater
Gallery (use QuicPic instead)
Messaging (use Hand cent instead)
Sidekick
Vpn
More i can't remember

Wow, the battery usage varies greatly between different people and their respective usage.
I've only used 3 ROMs: stock Rogers 2.2, Firefly 3.0, and Apex 10.1. My best battery life was with Rogers 2.2 but the ROM was lacking such as no working BT dialing. Firefly 3.0 was great and then Gingerbread came out. Now on Apex 10.1, I am getting only mediocre battery life. I can last 24 hours after light to moderate use only, but the screen was on for about 3 hours.

I would never go back to a ****ty samsung rom after experiencing miui goodness. The ui is unsurpassed, and the speed is incredible. No more of this having to reboot and clear caches to prevent the lagging and overall crappiness from the other roms. Reflash the update once a week and good to go. Never been easier and I've never been happier. I'll look into this app tho as suggested.

Which current ROM / Kernel combo gives you the MOST battery life?

If you're going to include statistics, PLEASE also try to include your SCREEN ON TIME, BRIGHTNESS, general use, wifi and lte would be good too.
I'm currently on CleanROM 3.0 and love it but thinking of switching to Lite version. worth it for battery savings? halp?
"BEST OF" Threads are not allowed on XDA. It sucks, I know. Because it'd be nice if there could be a place for some discussion... a "this rom is nice but that rom has better battery life" kind of thing
CleanROM is a good ROM, and Scott is an active developer here in the forums. Not sure how much better battery life you'll get from the lite version. I would imagine it'd be a lot because bloatware never helps battery life.

i'm confused, i'm not allowed to ask people for recommendations on what ROM has given them these supposed 5-hours screen-on times? I get 2-3 hours and my brightness is at 20% with wifi on on cleanrom 3.0 and im worried I have a defective battery. what's wrong with this question?
Unfortunately XDA Rules don't allow us to say what is the "best" in a specific area. You can ask for what ROM people are running and what screen on time they are getting so that you can determine it yourself.
Even though I'm all for following the rules I'm kinda confused why this rule was ever passed. In the real world there are always "best" of things. It seems this is just an ego protecting type of rule. However it would cause people to fight and say "No I have the best" and etc. People can't handle freedom!

I slightly want to kill you, mostly out of jealousy but also for not mentioning your brightness level, LTE on/unavailable, SYNC on/off, usage etc.
But this is enough to make me flash lite tonight after a total discharge. i'm at 44% with 1 hour 30 minutes screen on time. 10 hours 30 mins normal time at 2/10 brightness. (one notch above lowest setting)
is it possible i have a defective battery? or is Lite really that much different?
What's the procedure for switching from Standard to Lite? Backup all apps with titanium, flash dalvik and data cache, install via clockworkmod, then perform a battery calibration?

It is possible on CleanRom, I have so many other apps running at the moment that I get no where near that anymore. When you look at what he is running in his screenshots besides the screen he hasnt used much else (3% talk time for example). Now I switched between all three of the cleanRoms through the earlier development and did not notice a huge drop from DE to Lite. I went back to DE because I like it stripped of sense and their is still the debloating. I use FB and twitter so I wasnt going to stay on Lite for long.
I get roughly 8-9 hours a day on 25% brightness 3hrs of screentime but as I said I generally have a lot of other apps running that drain my battery that you may not run. (WiFi on most of the time and in an LTE area). My main drain comes from commuting to work in NYC when the service keeps dropping, which i read drains your battery quicker and it def appears this way. pansi (text messaging app) tends to use a fair amount of cpu power which helps drain my battery as does Defender II (a game).
Personally unless you are going to flash the lite version it wont make that big of a difference, it will depend more on what apps/screen brightness you are going to use.

Your correct,I don't set my screen brightness it's auto,I also don't use social apps like Facebook, etc. I do quite a bit of browsing and flashing. I've made some backups and flashed some mods and some of the apps I use don't even show up, why they don't I have no clue. I don't play mobile games though, which probably take up a lot of usage. I've had so many phones and roms over the years tell a lite ROM fits my agenda. It's still to each own. Just know I'm not just sitting and looking at my screen for over 5 hour of use lol. I'm also in and have LTE which shows in screenshots.

How is this?
I am running sick-sense ROM while using the performance battery profile on cpu editor. I have LTE, and auto sync on the whole time while doing some browsing, a couple of hours of tune in radio, 8 mins of calls, some txts via google voice, and a bit of music.
I'm back with more lol My settings are still the same from previous post.

any web browsing... it doesnt really show any usage, aside the screen has been on?
Yes,I just flashed the new 2.0 radio as well. I've even listen to some music. It seems that if the app hasn't used a lot of cpu power then it doesn't show up.I

I found the cleanroms have really great battery life. I gave up Samsung skyrocket because of the poor battery life but with this phone and with that rom in particular I was very impressed. With a full charge I can last all day with a good amount of use (phone calls, texts, auto syncing, and email) and still have 40% or so at days end.

Have you tried any of the other settings (performance/battery, batterysaver)? I'm currently using cleanrom DE, but I'm a little underwhelmed by the battery life. It could be that I wiped everything and spotify/chrome/redditnews is downloading everything fresh (they have been using quite a bit of data). I guess my usage these past two days have been a little out of the ordinary.
I'm very interested with sick sense though. The battery carrot is very enticing. I'm a bit worried about the journaling though. Will it make it difficult if I want to switch back to another rom?

I haven't tried the other profiles yet. I wanted to start off with this profile to see what this rom can really offer under the highest settings. Based on what others have said about the other profiles, the battery saver profile is where it's at if you want maximum battery life out of your phone. As far as flashing other roms and journaling, I don't have any experience doing that because this is my first rom. Also, I don't know if the disabled journaling on this rom impacts flashing other roms and am curious to know as well. Anybody knows if the disabled journaling will keep me from switching roms? I am new to this stuff so bear with me here....

Well, in lieu of other responses, what have you found with your current settings? Everything about the same? I have mean, thats pretty good for high performance setting and heavy use, yes?

kernel question

i have a quick kernel question, i have cm9 rom installed and i did some searching and found that changing the kernel could help with battery drain, so im needing 2 know if this actualy helps. with cm9s kernel my phone only lasted abt 6hrs from doing nothing but txting (i have no apps on my phone except batteryxl/2xbattery. im not using the pro ver as i do not buy apps, so my wifi is constantly turned on even after i shut it off manualy and turn data on), i flashed the team faq kernel and still see abt the same, if changing the kernel does help with battery life, what kernel would be the best 2 use? and if possible could you link me to it. i have searched the sgs4g section for kernels but havnt found many in the development forums.
(if a question like mine was asked/answered b4 i am sry 4 reposting, as i am still trying to figure the best setup 4 my phone that will last atleast a full day or longer from just txting)

Atm there aren't any ICS kernels besides those two. You can try to under clock to 600 or 800 MHz to get a little more screen on time. Its either that or go to a GB rom with known good battery life
First off, have you read some of the other threads on battery life and ICS?
Second, what do those battery apps actually do? They may be doing more harm than good. BetterBatteryStats will provide insight into why your phone might be draining so quickly.
Third, turn off the WiFi! Not clear why you have it on if you're only texting.
Sounds to me that if it isn't one of those, it's new-shiny-toy syndrome, or cruft from flashing (if you believe in gremlins)

Battery apps don't do anything to improve battery life anymore. They were needed back around froyo and earlier but not anymore

ive seen some improvment with batteryxl/2xbattery running, after calibrating my phone battery its showing its lasting around 18hours, as for my wifi im always home so its connected 24/7 for the other apps that are updated, i will try buying a new extended battery in the next few days and see how that works
