I have brought WP 7 Samsung Focus i917 recently. But knowing about the romoured features of Apollo update of Windows, I am very much tempted to have another new phone with Apollo OS. Is this the only chance for me or can I update the new Version of OS,i.e Apollo,on my Samsung Focus i917? Please reply me...Thanks in Advance
As far as I know 1st Gen and 2nd Gen phones should update to Apollo. Even if the carriers don't release it, cab sender on the development section will give it to us.

Really ? Are we going to start this discussion when there was just word about it released ? Wile we are at, it does <insert your WP7 model here> support the next OS ?
No specs have been given, no real details besides some "Possable" features. If you want removable SD cards, NO (as your phone does not support it at least externaly).
From what has been said....MAYBE, don't buy a device based on if it will be upgraded. Remember all the HD2 users who Tmo said it was upgradeable to WP7....
Also, never mind we have another year or so, in the real world...

When can we expect support to continue until for our trophys and omnias through official roms? Tango? Apollo? Unknown?
Bump (10char)
well i dont think even microsoft employees know this for sure so its just guessing for now... id say the apollo will be the last update available for us ;]
Apollo is WP8? With only one generation of phones available, I'm eager to see how (and if) MS will take care of the old devices in a year or so. Did they ever say something in this regard?
Yea, apollo is rumoured to be the next big mango like release and bring WP8 while tango will be the nodo like one.
I think that actualization will be available as long as hardware in our mobiles will be sufficient.
So this is official support. Although unless hardware requirements change I'm sure we will still get some custom roms afterwards which will give us new updates etc.
Btw when are tango and Apollo suspected to be released? Would make sense for Apollo (provided it is indeed wp8) to be released with Windows 8 which is rumored Q4 2012. How long after Apollo will there be a new update and will we still be supported?
I am assuming most of us are on a 2 year contract so if the updates are "to die for" I don't see it being too much of a problem as we could possibly just upgrade to a next Gen windows phone device
Nothing official or unofficial has been said that I know of. However I think Apollo would be the last update available for us.
It would make sense for them to support phones for at least two years, that way hardware won't hold back the progress in regards to the actual operating system. Plus after 2 years most people in the US are eligible for an upgrade!
Zune players
The Zune players have been supported for many years. So we can at least hope for the same with the phones to receive updates as long as the hardware supports it. The only problem is that now it depends on the OEMs and carriers as well.
i am thinking to buy the Lumia 710 when its available in India, but before buying i want to ask some questions. I am a WP n00b and have only used once and that too for few minutes since WP are not that famous in India and i really liked it a lot.
Now my first question is-
1) What are the customization that we can do in WP like changing themes, changing the way the phone looks bla bla bla
2) is there any Custom ROMS available like in Android
3) Can we send files via bluetooth by hacking
4) How far will my Lumia 710 be upgraded, i mean until which version of windows i can expect the device to be upgraded
5) is the GPU powerful enough to run future games when more phones will be released with more powerful GPU
Hope someone will answer these questions and please forgive me if i am asking som ultra-n00b ques
1) Apart from changing the colour of the tiles, there isn't really any other way that you can customize WP7. There is a way on unlocked phones to theme the tiles which has recently been released here but it is pretty useless until live tiles work.
2) There are custom roms for HTC devices but none as so far for the Nokia devices.
3) Not as far as I know.
4) It is pretty much guaranteed that you will receive all of the upcoming WP7 updates, I'm not too sure about how Microsoft is going to support older devices when WP8 is released.
5) As there is a guideline which manufacturers have to follow when producing WP7s, pretty much all of the phones are similar power-wise. We'll have to wait for the Apollo update, which is rumoured to bring dual-core support to windows phone and see what games are released then.
there are a lot of limitations so should i buy the Nokia Lumia 710 or the Xperia Play, please dont suggest me ANY other android phones
anyone please?
After using WP7 for more than 6 months and using Android earlier I recommend you to for WP7 smooth stable and beautiful design good features and battery life go for Samsung Omnia W which is due to release next week in India it has secondary camera as well

maybe you're looking on technical support you've come to accustomed with...
anyway, i've used all kind of phones, and now that i tried this lumia 710 for two days it already move my razr into a backup handphone... LoL
simple, effective, beautifully done... couldn't asked for more
the razr will be my backup phone as games and multimedia powerhouse
I personally didnt like the nokia lumia 710 that much because I got use to a big screen from the hd2, sensation but overall the phone works great & the screen rotation is the fastest I seen on a phone.
lumia 710 is very good. vote 5 star/ 5 star. I like it....
Massive necropost there, lbshock, in the most "truly useless" sense of the word.
However, to avoid people getting confused when they read this 6-month-old thread, custom ROMs are now totally possible on the Lumia 710.
.... all manufacturers of Android mobiles and tablets.
I'm not longer agree with the update policy of Google and the manufacturers. I've bought a device and a half a year later it is old and rusty. The manufacturers often needs over one year to update their devices to the newest version of Android. Or they say your device is to old, please buy a newer one.
You see my english is very bad!!!
That's the reason why I need the help of german speaking peopel with good english knowledges or from english speaking people with good german knowledges. To help me translate it in a proper and rightful english
It is not my intention to say android is bad. But we all have payed a lot of money to get an android device. And market is full of applications and Games. But wich one is compatible with our devices. Even the developers have the same problem. They have a lot of work to do, that their products reach a minimum of possible Android users.
Feel free to PM me or leave your statement here.
There are alot more involved. Google already stated that it would support devices for 18 months. But then you have the OEM who make changes to it and then it goes to the carriers who also make changes to it.
With the way hardware is updating there is no way to say that an OS built for a dual or quadcore is gonna work on a single core system. Once the hardware stabilizes then it may be an option but until then asking them to support a phone over a year old is just not gonna happen.
In regard to your question about which market apps are compatible for your android device the market app hides apps you might want but that won't work on your system though occasionally one slips through.

Nexus or Custom Roms
Is the only way to make sure you always get the latest software.
I think we are too demanding. We bought the phone once, then we want it to be always updated to the latest android without paying more.
Hey I think it is already very generous that they provide updates to 2.3.5, 2.3.6. I think they only required to provide updates to fix bugs.
Why we demand more just because its is android? do we ever demand updates from windows xp to vista or to 7, win mobile to 7, or from ios 4 to 5?
Do we really needs that non bug fix updates?

Very good point. Once the updates slow down to once a year we wont have this issue
bad time for evo 4g owners our updates are by dev only.
So Microsoft have announced today that 1st and 2nd gen devices will not be upgradable to windows phone 8. Many of us feel let down by microsoft but then again it was predictable. While they've said they will still push an update(s) to current gen phones, many of us are skeptical of the extent of support and compatability we will receive. I'm sure many of us can't decide to go out and buy a new WP8 device when they come out. So I personally will be taking much interest in the homebrew/hacking community. What would you rather want to/predict will come to current gen phones first, a WP8 port or an Android port?
I really doubt I'm getting either one but I want WP8 on my HTC Radar. If someone wants an Android phone then go get one, as they're usually cheaper or have specs high enough to run Android.
I highly doubt that any of those will be possible. An Android port is a little more likely but there's still the bootloader issue and more. WP8 is a no go IMHO, it will be too much different.

75% of the issues with the WP8 update is not really the kernel it is the hardware compatibilities issues. 1st gen and for sure 2nd gen devices will get alot of functions of WP8 that is not hardware related. MS should have worded it like this now all the trolls and naysayers will latch on to those dooms day words.
Neither. You're either going to buy a wp8 or an android phone.
I thing that android to WP8 will be first, but I hope WP8 to android.... Because current my device is with android
WP8 roms are on the way out !!!
So, since Microsoft forgot to let us know when 7.8 will be available, have anyone heard any rumors?
In my country people from microsoft talked about January or February
WP7.8 official release?
I was also about to post this question
Now that MS has taken lid off WP8, they should also declare official availability of WP7.8 for us- owners of their legacy WP7 devices.
Is it possible the Lumia 610 will get his update?

Every Windows Phone 7.1 7.5 will get it. the only problem is how, some are saying it will be released from the manufacturers itself on new models which run 7.8 and then we can "port" them, and then somebody says if microsoft not push it to every and let it do the carriers 80% of the users can wait forever to get it. Some sources say after the launch of WP8 and couple of weeks after that you can go to your carrier and they will flash it for you. I have also seen an Nokia News twitter post where a user is upset why nobody has mentioned 7.8 in the presentation yesterday. and Nokia News responded on twitter with "news on wp 7.8 will be soon, stay tuned" or something like that... So it can only take to new year for 7.8 thats my thoughts.
http://www.wpcentral.com/windows-phone-78-probably-coming-late
Windows Phone 8 is to be formally released in a few more hours. But guess a whole lot of us care more about its little brother: Windows Phone 7.8. For existing Windows Phone users who aren't buying a new device at this time, Windows Phone 7.8 is the real savior. There's bad news coming from Chinese site WPDang though: it'll be coming late.
Citing undisclosed sources, the site claims that Windows Phone 7.8 won't come through OTA update first. Instead, after a few weeks of Windows Phone 8 debut, version 7.8 will show up pre-loaded on new low-end devices. Afterward, OEMs will be pushing out OTA updates to older phones.
If true, this sounds awfully like what it was like with Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango): Fujitsu IS12T, Nokia Lumia 800, HTC Titan, then existing devices started to get the update gradually. Some OEMs might choose to update old phones in a manual way in retail stores, like what HTC did back then in Taiwan.
The good news is that, Windows Phone 8.0 and 7.8 are largely the same. Let's pray no one is left behind.

I am not entirely sure if that article is correct.
According to Nokia, Lumia devices (610 through 900) will be getting the update first. There are no new 7.8 devices announced in the following months, so it is safe to assume that by the end of the year we will have 7.8

well, when ever it comes and to whatever device, lets get those cab files shared ASAP so we can all have a piece of the pie
http://www.gsmarena.com/_windows_phone_italys_facebook_page_reveals_wp78_features-news-5028.php
Whoever is managing the Windows Phone Italia Facebook page was more talkative, however, and answered a question from a fan, revealing the new features that v7.8 will bring. The response has been deleted since.
The list includes the new homescreen (which we already knew), something called 'Club', which we guess is Rooms, Xbox Music and SmartGlass.
Facebook is hardly a reliable source of info, but the features listed seem quite probable - we already know about the homescreen, Rooms and SmartGlass are available for other OSes too, so it's unlikely they will be excluded from WP7.8 and Xbox Music will bring the existing user base to Microsoft's new music service.
In case you don't know yet, Windows Phone 7.8 will be released for 7 and 7.5 devices, as the old hardware won't get updated to WP8.

7.8 will bring about as much as windows phone 8 does. The only things we won't get in 7.8 is the things closely related to hardware like NFC, real multitasking (apparently dual core CPUs are needed for that) and directx support (so we won't be able to run some games).
That's pretty much all the differences.
And before you ask me how i know this, think about it...if it were only a few features, why not push the upgrade sooner? They actually take their time to implement stuff.
Windows Phone Italy said that it would be released 2 weeks after the WP8 launch (google it)
