Problem with OTA updates for locations app - HTC Desire S

Dear all,
About a week ago, my Desire S said a new OTA update was available: Update for the stock "Locations" app. I accepted to download and install update. And download began.
Weird thing is that during installation the progress bar was at 0% for hours and hours before I cancelled.
Ever since, when I go to settings -> about phone -> software updates -> Check for updates, I get the message:
"Your phone is downloading the software updates" and I can only press "OK".
Besides this, the phone has returned to the state, where I cannot hold down the standby buttun to turn off the phone (just like the issue after the OTA upgrade to android 2.3.5 and Sense 3.5). Here it worked to do a factory reset.
But I would really hate to do that again.
Any suggestions or fixes to the problems?
I appreciate the help.
Thank you!

No suggestions to solve the problem?

I would try to reboot my phone to end and restart every process. or maybe your update will work via wifi

Thanks for your suggestion.
I am on WiFi, and I have tried to completely turning of the phone (by removing battery, as the off button doesnt work cf my first post),
But it still says that the phone is downloading software. I am pretty sure it is not.

have you rooted your phone? You could try to delete or uninstall the locations application (and reinstall of course). Update via market isn't possible right?
Sent from my HTC Desire S using XDA App

It is not rooted. I cannot uninstall the locations app as it is stock. Maybe factory redet is the only option? Or is there a specific process than can be stopped to prevent it from saying that the phone is downloading updates?
Sent from my HTC Desire S using XDA App

The only process you could stop would be the update itself, but I'm sure you don't want to
I think there is no process like "searching for updates"
Just backup your data and do this factory reset. Maybe it'll help

Sigh, hehe... Is it possible to backup all the apps, so I won't have manually install every single one again after reset?

I'm doing that with my Google account. I can turn it on and off, It's in your phones privacy settings

It doesn't say what is backed up etc? Will that automatically install my apps after factory reset?
Sent from my HTC Desire S using XDA App

For me it does so.. You could search Google for more information on this function
You can backup contacts, apps, saved passwords etc.
Or you can use titanium backup for the same needs

It didnt for me but the problem is solved, and I guess a cleanup didn't hurt either thanks for your help and suggestions.

[Q] Contacts Force Close

This all started about 4 or 5 days ago. I noticed when trying to add a new contact, the app would just sit there like it was loading. So I close it and open the 'Contacts' to add them and right away i get the error message "Contacts has stopped unexpectedly..." i go to Rom Manager to try to fix the permissions but i get an error message there also and it wont let me fix them. Anyone know what this would be?
I'm rooted, but have the stock rom installed still. I have done nothing special to the phone other than rooting it.

also check the permission of the 3rd party apps you install.. sometimes it complicate things.. thus wiping your data removes user data from your installed apps...

tryed wiping cache but still no luck
Ack. What about the factory reset? The downside is losing your contacts if you haven't synced them, memos, IMs, call logs, etc.
Can you do a factory reset on a routed phone? Last time I did that on another phone I had to start ask over

You can do it, yes, but you will pretty much have to start all over.
Barring that, can you be more specific on what you uninstalled, what was FCing, etc?
thanks for your help bud I just pushed the system app folder to my phone and now its back

[Q] unsighed apps on original ship rom

Hi, my wife has the inspire, with the original ship Rom, she never updated, she was trying to get today's free App from Amazon, but it tells her to check off the setting to allows unsigned apps, but when we go to settings where it's located, the option isn't even there to check off or not. A friend of hers has the same phone with a stock rom too but she bought the phone a lot later, and the option is there on her phone. I figured her phone might have just shipped with an updated version of the Rom, maybe the one that fixed the signal issues or even gingerbread.
Anyways, just looking for help to get the app installed. Can we just use a file explore app and drag over the app from a desktop? Or will we still get the unsigned app issue?
Thank you.
You will not be able to side load apps with out updating. Go into setting, about phone, and some where in the bottom there are two update options. The update won't wipe the phone so every thing will be as it was just the latest update.

Ok, when I tried this, it brings up the option to do the ROM update to 2.47.502.7 --> Gingerbread ROM
I need to just confirm, this Won't Delete all my wife's Pictures or info, right?
BTW anyone know where I can find the 2nd Update, the Fryo one, with the Fixed Signal...the one that came out before Gingerbread?
Thanks
[WM Rom updates use to wipe the phone...but I know android is a lot different]
If you do the OTA upgrade, the one from the phone over wifi, it does not wipe user data. Neither upgrade will touch the SD card.
Sent from my HTC Inspire 4G using Tapatalk
If you call ATT they may still be able to push the "Unknown Sources" update to your phone without having to upgrade to gingerbread.

I'm having the same issue. It downloads successfully, boots into recovery, the progress bar gets maybe a third of the way, and then the icon changes to one that makes me think its an error, then it aborts and reboots, there's no message or anything. I used to be rooted, but not anymore (used superSU unroot)

Yes. Though I unfroze before unrooting. I just disabled some system apps (with the builtin thing) I'll try reenabling everything
Re-enabled all the bloatware, no luck.

[Q] Apps not downloading from Google Play

Is anyone else having issues getting apps to download? It started for me after flashing back to stock so I could check out the toggles mod. Since I froze updater.apk in order to stop the OTA update notification, I assumed that was the cause. Now, I'm running 77.8.10 with the stock kernel and I still have the problem. Apps look like they are going to update or download but just hang there and I eventually get error 495. The only thing that works for me is wiping the cache/dalvik cache--within a few days, the problem comes back.
I've had problems with the play store too, but I thought it was more of a connection issue. It'd start to go through the process of dl'ing but would hang as soon as I click accept. It adds the app to the installed list and show that its queued, but would never download. I'd have to cycle my wifi to get it to go again.
That's the only problem I've had with the play store.
