If you haven't noticed me and lmartin92 (AWESOME GUY) are the ONLY SHOWCASE users that has added anything to the community.. Hopefully that is about to change soon, we have a couple new guys that really sound promising, but I'm sure there's many of you that could contribute some Valuable help....
I don't think it's right depending on the Mesmerize Devs and Fascinate Devs do everything for us so I'm trying to learn what I can... And only a few months ago I'd never touched an Android device. Until about 3 weeks ago I'd never touched linux. All this is VERY new to me, but if you're willing to learn and have any knowledge with a computer, which if you've flashed anything you more than likely do, and can simply FOLLOW instructions.. Then there's plenty of people including myself that are willing to teach you what they know...
Bdemartino, has written an awesome theming guide Found HERE... He has the tools listed that you need just make sure to follow his instructions word for word... For showcase users (make sure to use the latest Showcase Pick n pack to pull the framework-res and twframework-res for your themes) Theming is trial and error.. You're more than likely not going to get it right the first try... I have some additional files with the xml edits.. Just PM me if you're interested
Phidelt82 has written up a guide for setting up a DEV box located HERE.. This may be advanced for some, but you can always walk through it and see Linux and play around with some stuff and try to learn some commands..
I'm just learning mods, but again I can teach you what I've learned...
And for all the Showcase users that don't think they can develop or don't have time, then the least you could do to support this forum is offer the Newer guys courteous answers when they ask.. I know that the same questions can get old, but let's not forget that we were all new at one point.. Some people may have no forum experience what so ever... So let's help them out, and if you don't want to do that then simply don't respond and let someone else answer them...
The last thing we want to do is scare away new Users from XDA, you never know what they may bring to the table down the road!!!!
And for the new people...
Please Read the entire posts first before doing anything, if you run into a problem try reading through the thread to see if anyone else has the same issue..
If you can't find your answer then the best place to get an answer is the irc
http://webchat.freenode.net/ channel= #samsung-mesmerize
and you can always post a question in the threads as well....

Ew. First step: Drop the 1993 clichés.
I am a little new to this but succesfuly rooted my last showcase and had 2.2.1 with pick n pack .3 and voodoo kernal and it worked great other than I couldn't silence phone calls with the volume rocker. Anyone else have this issue? Then I flashed superfrankenclean Tom with comavault kernal and I had a lot of verizon stuff on it like location services powered by vzw and also 3g mobile hotspot vzw wasn't worried to much about it till this morning my service dropped to nothing then I dialed *228 which I know now was big no no and then my phone went into roaming and couldn't get any service at all so took it to csouth got a new one which probably will be charged for and then tried to do step by step instructions for froyo and links were gone and instructions so I tried to root with z4 which I did then couldn't get red recovery screen to work when I flashed update.zip kept getting no signature or something so anyway I was able to redo my steps on the froyo build from Odin as I had somehow remembered and now I got everything going on pnp.3 and using voodoo but I really miss voodoo control sound is this still not available for it? I would like to go back to superclean with comavault but would like some advice and feedback from more experienced users I posted this in another thread but figured this was best thread for it and I really wish we had our own thread because I read on this site for days back 2 weeks ago and had massive migraines from trying to figure out what would work for showcase and what wouldn't and some things like rom manager you use the fascinate for something then for other things on this site you use the mesmerize so any help with what is most stable and what to run would be appreciated only thing I can tell not working with pnp.3 now is can't silence phone calls still but I really like the superclean and would go back to it if someone posted about what's happening to cause the radio signal issue

The best advice I can give you is learn to listen (read) and follow the discussions and advice these forums provide. Only flash ROMs, kernels, etc. that are either designed for the Showcase or are known to be compatible with it. Period. If you don't pay attention, and just go off flashing this and that and whatever, you're asking for trouble. There's no need to get a headache over all the stuff that's out there that isn't for the Showcase. Only concern yourself with what is either for, or is compatible with, the Showcase. Everything else isn't relevant.
And if after actually reading the original post and the thread and you still aren't sure if its a-ok for the Showcase, just ask. But read first. Don't be that guy who asks, when the original post clearly states it is or isn't Showcase compatible in the second or third sentence. Know what I mean?
As for the superclean ROM. I'm running it and the comavolt kernel and have had absolutely zero issues.
I've had two other people tell me they lost their signal all together with superclean to and they tried to go back to pnp and they still had no signal. Only way they got it back was to use odin. Guess ill try it out again as I really liked it. Under settings and mobile network which one of the boxes do you have checked? Home automatic a or b?

Yeah, I suppose that was a little cheezy.
First of all I am by no means a developer, I want to start getting into it though so I just want to try to put a little something out there which is by no mean ground breaking there are tons of better options I am sure. I am building it off the 2.11 leak and I am currently taking out some of the fat and adding HTC custom kernel. I am searching around other roms peaking here and there just for ideas, again I am building off leak not coping anyone's work. I want to know if any one has any ideas to what .apk they want in and which ones they want removed. I am not much of a facebook person I would take all that crap out. This is going to be close to stock so it going to be for people who dont want to much custom and want to stay close to home. I also want to know if there is demand for any of these ROMs. I know people crave update after update but this will prob not be updated till the offical OTA comes out. I am just building this for myself and want to know if anyone want to try it also. I added back in WiFi teather and I also removed the TetheringGuard.apk which I have noticed some developers have left in place to keep these kinda apps from working. Again I can read inside the forum and see there are plenty of ROMs is anyone looking for a ROM like I am building. I will have it done in a few days I dont want to rush it and be crappy. I am also working on including a theme with it so if I do that may take a little longer. Theme will be based on Green which will blend in with the name of the ROM. If I see some yes answers and there is enough of them I will add my ROM no longer than a week from now under the name Gr33n3nvy with the 3's being in honor of DT whos work and lack of developing knowledge prior to building got me into this. I dont have Chingy on speed dial so please be easy with the comments LOL. More will come as soon as I read all the web sites I have people sending me.
Good luck dude, cant wait to see it Chingy has been very helpful to those looking to get started.

I would try to hit him up but even DT was saying he gets really busy. Maybe on my next one I just want to see what I can do on my own before I start doing custom stuff to it. I will def need some help by then. I am bringing my lap top to work next 6 days to just tinker around with some of the stuff. I am hoping a week will be enough time to get what I want done to it. So far just getting some ideas to what people want who dont want tooo much custom.

If I'm wrong I apologize but from the little i have done in making stock roms is if you take out the Tetheringguard apk, the verizon hotspot will not work. I just mention this because I have had alot of requests to keep it in because alot use the official verizon hotspot. It doesnt affect wifi tethering apk either way from what I can tell. Just wanted to throw this FYI out there to you.

It seems that in some alternate reality it is acceptable to assume that "in your spare time" means cancel all of your plans and get used to fluorescent lighting because daylight is just the glare on your computer screen. Either way, I am downloading some 2 gigs of random ICS stuff and finally received my replacement Macbook, so between projects I will try to get something moving on this.

Right now all I have is the sdk version from RootzWiki, which appears was a post of just the modified boot. I have a few Nexus4g builds that claim to work. I have a rebuilt boot image and I am trying to pack all of it together and see what happens so I know where to start.

I guess if you didn't see the previous thread, which was more or less a rick-roll youtube video that said it isn't possible to get anything running, then an understandable first reaction is to make rude comments...
But if you read the thread you are responding to, you would have seen that on the Nexus it is a working build, capable of being used as more than just a proof-of-concept. Then again, I don't expect people to read these days because they are too busy writing...

Best leave the developing to the developers and stop back when there is something to load up and complain about
So getting an SDK port working on a Nexus S is the same as getting it to run on the ThunderBolt?
I'm not saying it isn't possible though I highly doubt it will work. I'm saying don't call it the "Real Deal".

This is real ICS development, and not a prank so it is as the title says "ICS Development (Real Deal)"
And no, getting a port working on the Nexus S is not the same as getting it to work on the Thunderbolt, which is why there isn't a file in that first post yet. I think you are assuming that the only thing available is the SDK image, though, when the full system dump is out there also.
My previous statement still stands.. Why don't you go shake down some kids for their script source, and come back when there is something here to test.

You do know downloads, packing, transferring, uploading, etc do run in the background right? I remember back when threads like this rallied up support and assistance instead of whatever you call what you're doing... For the record I am waiting on a data wipe and a lot of stuff is still installing since the computer only came yesterday.
I can just toss up every little edit I test and brick phones all day long, or I can document the process and release when it hits milestones. That way I can catch input along the way and prevent a lot of wasted time.
Just swapped the boot on the posted Nexus build, changed over all the apn info, and added in all the keylayout and hardware files. Going through and finding everything that needs to be swapped for a straight port, then if it runs I will post up the progress.

Whether you get anywhere or not, good luck
Nothing wrong with doing something just for the challenge of having said you did it and the experience.
I am glad to see someone putting some real effort into getting an ICS port going. And appreciate you posting your progress here along the way. I'm interested in seeing how you get where you get.
Good Luck
As already mentioned, this thread is for relevant discussion of the upcoming port.
If you have nothing constructive to contribute then keep it to yourself.
No *****ing and whining about the probable lack of functionality, no pestering for ETA's and no petty personal playground nonsense.
No more warningsIf this goes off topic again then there will be repercussions.

Thanks. The good news is that I have a shopping list of what has been changed to go from sdk to working port. The bad news is that I also have a project due Thursday that I need to actually spend some time with.
For anyone with the sdk build, make sure before even trying to run it that you replace all the /system/bin files that just say toolbox with real files or set up symlinks for them. Busybox also needs to be added/replaced in /system/xbin
This will get that version to where you can run logcat and see the EGL errors, but it will also be in a condition to start tweaking files to get the touchscreen running.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk
I can't waaaaiiiitttt!!
Take as much time as you need! Your life is more important than this.
I am uploading what I have, but not because it is a huge step forward. I fixed all the commands and added the files that should fix the touchscreen, but didn't on this device.
This is still a step forward from the base build we currently have. At least typing a command no longer results in "toolbox" being displayed instead of results. I reverted everything I tested to make sure the only test changes were absolutely necessary to provide a solid base. I will post a link as soon as it is up.

As you all know, nearly two weeks ago the long awaited source code for the Android Gingerbread software was released. This had been a joyous occasion for many of us who had been patiently awaiting its release in hopes that it would lead to working versions of Cyanogenmod and MIUI on our phones, as well as several kernel modifications that were not previously possible. The first few hours of speculation turned into days, which turned into weeks, with the promises of development yet to be fulfilled. As it turns out the fears of some of you had come true, that the few developers that were left lost interest in the Galaxy S 4G for other projects.
While people like Raver have actively stuck with us, there has been a dead silence by those who were previously the most visible on this forum. Whitehawkx who has left us for the Galaxy S2, Dsexton who had left for lack of a separate computer, and Dr Honk who God knows where he is. Krylon ive seen mention working on a kernel once but with little detail. These were some of the best we had and we need to make it overwhelmingly obvious to them that they are wanted and needed here. So I propose that we take the time to let them know that the source code they've wanted and needed is now available and ready to be worked. Youre welcome to write up your own words for a message, though heres something I threw together along with the public contact info for the devs.
Feel free to reach out to any other devs who have not been listed here or from other forums.
Update: Dev's emails were removed by site mods. If you would like to email the people below, you can readily find their email in their user profiles and in their Donate To Me links.

“Hello (dev screen name),
This is (your screen name) from the Galaxy S 4G forums on XDA. If you haven’t heard, the source code for Gingerbread we have been eagerly awaiting was finally released a few weeks ago for our phones. With the source finally released, the limitations our devs had faced before in developing for the SGS4G are now gone, and the path is clear for development of CM7 and MIUI for our phones. I have noticed you have not been around the SGS4G forums recently, but I along with all the other forum members have been hopefully awaiting your return to developing for our phones with the expertise you have shown in all of your many other projects for the SGS4G. As well, the lack of devs on the forum have left many of the still poplar ROM’s unmaintained and not updated to the latest official release. Please come back to developing for the SGS4G for all of us who have spent hours testing and using your ROM’s and show us what your talents can turn these phones into.
Thank you”
I think this is good intended but i fear it wont change anything.
Dont forget soma and airfluip who has been developing for our phones recently.
Krylin said in twitter that he will begin working in a ROM based on GB for our phones. Although he said he will start it today if he doesnt its still good news. I know he can make kernels and roms. Also raver is working. Dsexton said he will get a computer soon and that he needed break. White.... I dont know he droppwd when ki3 leaked. But oh well, lets enjoy or wait.
I've been lurking these forums since this phone came out, with the occasional post here and there.
I have seen people waiting months just for root.
I remember kb5 enhanced was our only ROM for times without end, just to have that developer throw a fit at Mr.Clown for mistakingly closing his thread and leave us hanging.
I remember following Krylon on twitter for what seemed like an eternity, until we finally had cwm on our phones.
Then came the good times.
New roms coming out just about every week, themes, mods, and all the goodies we see on our forums today.
New developers popping up, the formation of teams like aerodonk and acid.
Now we are back in one of these silent periods.
It seems like all development stopped.
But one thing I've learned from these forums is that patience is a virtue.
We go from bad times to good times, to bad again, and so on.
I'm sure there is progress being done right now.
No matter how little, our how long it's taking, it will come.
And a new life cycle will start for our phones.
We just gotta hang tight, get through this metamorphose, and then our phone will come out, greater then before!
Saw on krylons twitter something about doing another rom based off of the gb update so that looks promising.
Also its not just the sgs4g. I own a sensation as well and things have really slowed there too.
I understand everybodys frustration with the length of time that it is taking for us to get new roms. But you have to understand these guys do this in their spare time. And yes, it is true that because of Samsung and t mobile taking forever to release a GB for us made some of the devs loose interest and move to other devices; however, we still have Raver and Krylon on or side, Dsexton will be coming back soon, and hopefully we can get Drhonk and Whitehawx back if not for developing but for at least guidance, tips, and support. I for one have started trying to learn how to do some of this but without a Linux machine it is a bit difficult. But there is no reason some of you can't chip in and try to learn this stuff too. Not to override the few true devs we have, but to assist them.

Hi Thomas
Please share your knowledge source. I am willing to learn as well, though to tell you the truth, moding and theming couldn't care me less, I'm always into performance and reliability, as well as good RTL and foreign language support (like in CM and MIUI).
Other than that, I'm always on stock theme.
I'm no dev, but I'm considering to become one in the future.

My biggest resources are picking the brain of RaverX3X and google. You can do most everything on a windows machine except mod kernels and make an Odin .tar (for those you need Linux or the ability to run Linux in a vm environment). There are quite a few tutorials out there. You just have to download the right tools to do it, have lots of spare time to devote to it and the gonads to test it.lol... Pm me later with specific questions and I can give you direct links to tutorials that might help you as well.

Interesting idea. The only issue I see is what if we collect money and no one steps up to the plate. Would everyone just get a refund or would the money go towards another cause?

You don't necessarily need Linux in order to make an Odin flashable tar file, I personally use Cygwin to make the modem packages.
Yes I am aware that Cygwin is Linux-like command line, but it is by no means Linux in a VM environment.

Interesting idea. The only issue I see is what if we collect money and no one steps up to the plate. Would everyone just get a refund or would the money go towards another cause?

I would rather set a bounty for ICS. CM9 would be a better goal in my opinion.
what happened to CM8? did i miss something?

I remember when i had the galaxy vibrant early this year i was so into the device cause they were a lots of roms here to choose from and thats one of my concerns now for this device now. If you go to the vibrant section there are a lots of 2.2 biulds 2.2.1, 2.3 ,2.3.3 etc etc etc. And they are all different. Including from stock to MIUI and htc Sence. As well as gingerbread and honeycomb. So my question is why the devs didnt work on some builds like those for this device. From my end i really dont care about what number of the OS is as long the build is stable, fast, bloatware free, custom ringtones, wallpapers, and other great thing that i did manage to see on my old vibrant that i no longer own :/
Yesterday my older sister got the galaxy s 2 for tmobile and its so awsome. I have envy in me now jajajajaja xD

I would leave it as a standing bounty like they did with the HP Touchpad. Someone will jump on it if its large enough.

CM8 was reserved for Honeycomb so ICS will be CM9

You don't necessarily need Linux in order to make an Odin flashable tar file, I personally use Cygwin to make the modem packages.

This is true. Which is what I am learning to use now, but I forgot to add that part... Thanks for catching my error. From my understanding, you can use it to modify a kernel as well, but i'm not having very good luck with it yet.

This is mere conjecture on my part, but I would assume that you can modify the kernel in Windows as long as your text editor supports Unix-type line endings (Notepad++ works nicely), and then compile it using presumably gcc in Cygwin. Again, this is merely speculation on my part, having only built a Linux kernel on Linux, for my desktop.
Anyone got a copy of that? With a shield the app that launches when you hit the shield button I need that exact app.
Looking to try spoofing tegra in my nexus 4 to try streaming with a normal controller
Thanks!
I hope someone makes this happen, due to it streaming I can't see hardware being a limitation.
It could be like the Ouya framework though... Dependent on the actual device.

I sure hope someone will be able to release the APK. I would be interested in using it on my Galaxy S3.
It's not the same as the TegraZone already on the Play store?

No, it is not. And while I can't speak too much about it, it's not just a side-load onto any device. So don't be holding your breath about someone uploading the APK and getting all the features running this week.
right....because it sooo hard to make rudimentary changes to a launcher.
The APK is called Dashboard.apk. It resides in /system/app and can be launched as a normal app.
?? Then why did you say the opposite not 2 posts ago?

Let me know when you get this working, since you love trolling. One of us has been helping everyone to the largest extent they can. The other is just demanding a bunch of stuff since he doesn't want to buy one himself.
I will personally post the full system image tonight if it isn't already uploaded by then. And you can go to town, I'm seriously curious about how much you can get working this week, since its obviously so easy.

It won't do anything. It will crash on another device.

You're the one going around posting false information. And asking for a system dump is not "demanding a bunch of stuff".
If you want to get into a pissing match about who's done more to help the XDA community, you're gonna lose. I've done alot more than post some roms for the EVO 3D. If anyone's a troll here its you.
And 20x more people have found my comments helpful. So you're still trolling. What false info have I given?
Unlike you i'm not a thanks whore, and the thanks meter wasn't even implemented when I started posting on XDA. I have released numerous firmware images and sbf files that would otherwise have not been obtainable, saving countless devices in the process(See the technician only Xoom recovery file that was the only way to restore a bricked Xoom for months after release). That's a little more important to me than some likes.
Oh and False info? You just said not a few moments ago it runs like a normal app.
Now now boys, calm down.
I must admit I am on legions side on most of his points so far. This is a community forum for the general public and what we do here is Share and Mod. I do believe "agrabren" that as you are part of the Nvidia team you don't want to see parts of your product ported and such, but the product is now in the hands of the user and so now it is up to us what we do with our purchases.

It didn't occur to me that I might need to explain that in more detail, but in hind-sight, it does need clarification. What I mean, and meant from the beginning, is that the framework doesn't issue any "magic" to launch that app. There's no special "back-door" entry into that APK which makes it work on the device, nor is the Intent anyway modified. My natural instinct is to distrust every aspect of a system app that doesn't sideload correctly. In this case, I gave extra insight into areas of attack on getting the APK to load on other devices by eliminating one method a company could use for an app that has a special method of launch (the center button on the device).
So my statement, properly clarified, is that the APK itself has nothing special about it in regards to Intent launching or its AndroidManifest.xml, but that without some efforts with other components, will not run directly on another device, especially one based on a non-Tegra device.

Great, except I've actually been trying to help most people with most parts of ROM sharing and modding. I've already said that I'm going to post the OTA1 system and boot images, in their official entirety, as well as I'll probably post a rooted version as well. I've been helping people prevent bricking their devices.
If you'd rather I just go away, I'm happy to. But I wouldn't expect anyone else from NVIDIA to be reaching out to get CM10.2 up and running on this device, or to get a custom recovery up and running quickly. I've never objected to him getting the system image, I'm all for it being uploaded and even promised to do so. I'm trying to help clarify what will work easily and what won't. I even answered the question that nobody else had, the APK he's asking for (because he didn't know the name of it) is Dashboard.apk, and it resides in /system/app. His contributions right now to the SHIELD forums on XDA are: Give me the system image, give me some APKs that may be on the device! That rubs me the wrong way as a person who has spent plenty of time developing ROMs for different phones, helping fix kernels for multiple CM-supported devices, and who has *always* fought for companies to give to the community. Unlockable bootloader? Yeah, I was part of that push. I'm trying my best to get as much source as possible made public.
Maybe I came off poorly in this thread (because this was after the thread asking for an apk that has only been demoed at tradeshows and special press meetings). So I'm sorry if I came off wrong, but while everyone else is helping each other out, he's just demanding stuff.
I what world do you live in that posting a thread asking for a system image and a possibly pre-loaded app qualifies as "demanding stuff"? Why should I have to have done anything to be worthy of your approval to post such a thread?
There is a huge conflict of interest with you both working for Nvidia and unofficially releasing official firmware and hacks, so frankly no, I don't trust you being involved in this devices xda development.

So a guy who doesn't own the device is not going to trust ROMs I make for a device he doesn't own. Oops, no loss to me. You can go back to trolling, I'm done with your thread. You have your system image and boot image in either manner you want it.
Oops, my bad. It wasn't your thread, you just came into this thread to troll me. My mistake.
Raptor, if you check in the Android Development section, you'll find the system images. I'd suggest the ZIP version, because it's both smaller and already extracted. The system.img is an uncompress image to be flashed via fastboot in case someone messes up their system or boot partitions.
