Firefox 10 - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Themes and Apps

Pretty sure this hasn't been posted yet, but Firefox 10 has just been released for Android, and it is in my mind close to the perfect browser.
I've been dying for an Android browser that is GPU accelerated like Opera and Dolphin, but has scrolling constraints in the vertical plane. Meaning if I zoom in and flick to scroll down, then it doesn't scroll minutely left or right. Firefox 10 does this perfectly. It's also very fast now and on par with Opera/Dolphin.
Also, unlike Opera, it doesn't spaz out when you change the LCD density to 240 and change the interface to tablet mode that makes it impossible to use the menus.
Only small things, but they were driving me crazy on Opera Mobile and I'm now happy there's a solution.
If you haven't already, I'd suggest giving it a lash.

Also, now it starts instantly, has support for add-ons and it synchronizes nicely (bookmarks, history and some settings) with the desktop version. And the logo is a classic.

It's "good" enough i guess, but still no flash. It's a no go for me.

True, I forgot to mention no flash. I don't use flash at all so it was not a consideration but many others probably do, so thanks for the reminder. Youtube videos still play embedded properly though for anyone wondering.

its definitely doing great even for the mac too

Here's Firefox 11 alpha 2 Aurora WITH flash support and much more.

Cheers LM, I'll check it out.

Is there a way to set the user agent so that one can decide to brows as desktop and not as mobile, like in dolphin one can do?
Inviato dal mio GT-N7000 usando Tapatalk

Go into Settings, Addon tab, then search and install "Phony" addon. After the browser reboot. In the main Settings menu should have option to change user agents.

Don't forget you can also run the bleeding edge nightlies alongside the other versions.
Its totally different to v10

what about removing status bar?
Just found it - type in "full screen" in the add-ons search..... doh!

i use Firefox 11 alpha 2 Aurora and it nice i think

I like the Chrome Beta better

Flash will soon be terminated and support allready stopped (no updates anymore), html5 is the future

interface is nice and useable on 3g and wifi. but if ur on a slow connection and want pages loading with lower data usage, opera is still the one. (gprs/edge)

[REQ] A improved and not so irritating gallery app

Im looking for a more functional browser, nothing fancy nor top of the line, just a little bit less irritating.
I have a samsung galaxy s vibrant and am irritated by the stock gallery. Firstly I cant play .GIF files, this is a major irritation cause i like to play the images for people and get a glorious laugh moment.
Secondly when I click the share button the list of apps pops up that I can use to share with. I can glide up or down this list smoothly, atleast within the confines of the screen. The list doesnt move when you slide up or down it just highlights whats initially visible on the screen. This is quite unfavorable if your an app whore with lots of apps that provide image sharing abilities because they seem to drown the other apps off the list.
Would any one be able to point out any decent replacement gallery apps or mods that allow these problems or issues to be remedied.
I use Dolphin HD as my "stock browser". For something no-fuss Id suggest Opera Mini.
As for a Gallery replacemnt; QuickPic is very good. I root-uninstalled the default Gallery (do at own risk).

Quickpic seems to be doing the trick ... no playing .gif files but i can get over that cause its smooth and light
you could also try picturen or justpicture
Quickpic rocks EXCEPT for 2 things:
1. No animated gifs
2. No Picasa integration
quickpic looks pretty good to me! thanks for the heads up!

havent tried chrome yet , cuz i forgot lol
i used to love opera browser, but they dont work that well with ics yet
I prefer to use chrome beta, but I keep the stock browser as default because for whatever reason when I click a link from the facebook app it won't work in chrome but it does work with stock.
Chrome... and what was that post about "certain" websites with flash? lol... pr0n?
Anyway, I also have always liked Opera to be honest. Funny, I only like it on Android haha. I'm thinking I'll likely use Chrome over Opera now that it's out, but the look of Opera is pretty nice with the black and it maximizes on space. Also many other nice features...Most of which I think Chrome beta has, but still. Nice browser and been fast for me too.

Yes, it will sync. You need to enable the sync of course on your phone. Then you also need to be signed in from your desktop browser. Go to the wrench and then "sign in" ... it says under the chrome beta on your mobile phone where to go. You need an app specific password I guess...It asked me for one so I made a new one.
Anyway, it worked and if you are then signed in on your desktop browser you can actually open the tabs you have open there on your phone!
However, it's a novel feature because of course it does not carry over any sessions. So right now I see this "reply to thread" page on my phone (it just synced) but if I open it on my One X, it asks me to sign in to XDA of course.
But most importantly, it will sync your bookmarks.
edit-- if you've never signed in before using chrome on your desktop, note that your browser might become themed. i thought the window chrome was messed up at first, but it ended up being a design element. i'm now trying to remove the theme...i don't like it and just want it basic windows color. (easy enough)
also note: if you develop web sites/apps locally ha, you might run into issues. it can't sync across the tab because it won't ever load on your phone of course. so on my desktop browser it now won't open my local web app. i turned off sync for tabs and only have it for bookmarks and autofill (under advanced in the settings up top next to your signed in account) but still no good. i may now have to sign out of chrome on the desktop just to build apps. that stinks.
Xscope browser for me.

I was frustrated too. Then I realized that I could clear the defaults. That worked.
Goto the Settings > Apps > Internet. Clear defaults.
This should set it to Chrome. Also you could change from App association

Dolphin HD. I used to use Chrome since it really screams, but it's just too buggy. I wish it wasn't since it even syncs with your desktop bookmarks. Hopefully it comes out of beta soon.
For myself personally I still thing that the Dolphin Mini is faster, more snappy and loads the pages way faster then Chrome Beta. Until google gets there's act together and makes the browser as snappy and less of a hog I'll just back and keep using Dolphin Mini.
Using ICS+.
Chrome and even the stock are good but I've been getting the occasional hiccup in both of those, no problems with ICS+ though. Also a very small amount of scrolling lag on Chrome too.
Anyone else running into the swype function on the default keyboard not working within Chrome? Specifically the address/search bar.

Chrome is the all round best, but if you don't like Chrome then try Boat browser. I find it's a simply awesome browser.
I think if you are looking for an overall balance of speed, looks, extras and ease of use you can't beat Dolphin Beta.
The best thing is that it allows you to sync bookmarks online and displays them in a drag out sidebar on the left side of the page. It also supports folders and keeps your place in a folder. For instance, if you open a folder and click a bookmark that same folder will still be open and have the focus when you go back instead of having to drill down to it again. This can be a big time saver.
The only other browser that does this would be Maxthon which is also good but not as easy to use.

I have been having a great experience with Maxithon. I had tried it before and did not like it but it seems to almost be made for Gnote 10.1. IMO
IMHO Chrome with a permanent desktop mode mod is perfect

No, I don't have this issue, but Opera does seem to crash more often than it should
i use opera for videos - i like being able to selectively run flash files, plus most of the other browsers won't open some videos in new tabs. firefox for everything else. flash video playback is kinda buggy with ff and i occasionally have to force close it.
For me stock browser would be best if only there was a way to permanently set desktop mode and if it had text reflow.
* Opera Mobile: Nice with its text reflow but high bandwidth flash movies stutters sometimes.
* Boat Browser: Has working text reflow and excellent flash performance but doesn't hide the notification area when playing flash in full screen mode.
* Chrome: No flash.
* Maxthon: Flash has bugs on some sites.
* Dolphin: Works pretty good but doesn't have text reflow.
* Firefox: Lagging flash performance.
* ICS Browser: Has bugs and its text reflow doesn't work on Samsung devices.
If only Boat browser would hide the notification bar when showing movies in full screen mode it would be my first choice. I've emailed the developer about the problem and suggest you do the same and if we're lucky maybe it will be fixed.

You did not say if you use opera mini or mobile . I use opera mobile and never ever has it crashed it opens some other window in the background but it's not bother . Plus unlike stock browser this one can download files all the way . Stock browser has real problem downloading . Either it's unable to download ( for no reason what-so-friggin-ever ) or when you download " cannot parse package " . Only problem with opera is google maps , but I don't use it . I use original maps . Try installing some ad blocker and see if that minimizes pop-ups
I still enjoy using the stock browser for the option of multiscreen and it runs well with the tablet. Scrolling is smooth and no real problems that i can think of.

Just leting you know that dolphin browser has text relow, although its a littke tricky. First pinch to zoom on the area you want to read then double tap on that area. The text will be reflowed at this point.
You probably know this but ild post it anyway for people who might not .
Stock browser on the other hand does not support text reflow but you can enable desktop mode for a particular session until you shutdown the browser completely. First type about:debug on the browser url bar. A java console dialog box will then be displayed beneath the url bar. Go to your browser settings at this point and you will see additional settings option.
Click on UA STRING then select desktop...Once this is done all your pages will be rendered in desktop mode for the duration of your session..
Here is a trick for firefox if you do use it i posted this on a forum a few years back and it works on here type in about:config into the brower and start with network.http and hit the search button and change each one if you need help let me know this works on the deskmtop version as well
network.http.max-connections – 48
network.http.max-connections-per-server – 16
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy – 8
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server – 4
network.http.pipelining – true
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests – 100
network.http.proxy.pipelining – true
network.http.request.timeout – 300
NEW -> Integer. Name it “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set its value to “0”.

Does any browser do this?
Hidden tab staying active and hidden action bar?
Two things l miss from my Kindle color (my gateway tablet).
The browser - stock or Opera Mobile- allows streaming music and video to continue on hidden tabs. Many times I will have multiple tabs open, reading on the front and streaming YouTube or Stereogum on the hidden tab.
Opera Mobile collapses the bottom action bar into a thin maybe 1/8" line. A simple tap opens it up.
Anyway to get these two things implemented?

What web browser are you using?

what web browser are you guys using and why?
lately ive been using MAXTHON Browser but i always seem to go back to Dolphin Browser for some reason.
Chrome Beta.
Stock JB browser. It runs better, no lags.
Chrome browser lags on my phone and slower than stock browser.
And i havent tried dolphin on this phone yet.

I've tried all the most popular browsers and in the end I've chosen to stay with the stock. IMHO it works very nicely, expecially if you put it full screen, flash plugin on-demand, and enable the quick controls (those that appear by touching the outer part of the screen).
A good alternative IMHO is Maxthon.
Well I just read an article about boat browser and after testing it , it does load pages faster than Maxthon and Dolphin.

stock sense
- flash player
- text reflow when pinch to zoom and double tap
- quick thumb controls that are even better than the standard stock ones
- nice ui
- quick and smooth
- no rendering problems with text/web pages
Chrome. The stock will suspend fast dormant on wcdma network for smooth response.
I use chrome also. The only thing that bothers me about chrome is that the address bar is always visible.

Agreed. Seeing the pages I have open on my PC from my phone is awesome. One of the main reasons I use Chrome Beta.
Also I would've tried the AOSP browser but it is deemed a "security risk"
Chrome Beta for its overall performance and the useful sync feature.
In this subject, I made a quite complete browser benchmark with our One S for "fun" and curiosity. I tested many popular browsers in different well-known benchmarks and test tools.
You can check the results in this Google spreadsheet:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AugWAI-JybKRdGxlZ1hYb0xTZ2tZYlFBeTFOVzY1WEE
The results can be easily ordered in the "Ranking" sheet.
I hope you find it interesting!
AW: What web browser are you using?
Chrome. It has what I need and is faster than other browsers I tried. But the best is synchronisation with desktop chrome, same bookmarks on any device, even open pages are synched. Awesome!

Immersive mode in apps

While this question is not directly related to Nexus 5, but since it is one of the few devices running KitKat, I'm posting it here. Its been more than a month since KitKat has launched, but even today the "immersive mode" (which I feel is SO important!) has not been translated to many apps that I use regularly -- Kindle, Pocket, Feedly etc. Its not like these apps haven't updated in the last month or so (they have). Is there any reason why these companies have not considered putting immersive mode as a priority item?
Stability is always the priority. Ask the developers of each app if they plan to support it. We don't know the answer in that, we cannot read minds

There is an Xposed module on these forums somewhere, that enables immersive mode everywhere. It has a few flaws though, as some apps just don't work right with it, or once the navigation bar pops back up, it cuts off the portion of the screen.
However the ones that did work with it, it worker great. It would be nice for someone to make an app or tweak to force selected apps into immersive mode, while allowing the navigation bar to stay where needed.

I still use expanded desktop + PIE controls. I think it works better than immersive mode. I turn it on when gaming.
I used the "Immerse me" xposed module, but it had some issues. Fore example in the AOSP messaging app, when the keyboard popped up, the last message received appeared inbetween the keyboard and where I was typing the message, but only partly. part was behind where I typed teh message. I found that disorientating. Also in tapatalk, which I use a lot - when the keyboard came up, teh top of tapatalk (the tapatalk toolbar) disappeared and I couldn't scroll. Really tricky to use with Pie as I had to keep backing out of the keyboard to do things within tapatalk when typing messages.

Hey man thanks for this! This is pretty much what I've been wanting. Now I can use the full resolution of my nexus 5! Great for streaming my PC games. Woohoo!
Would still be nice to have some sort of way to choose what apps go full screen, cuz it would just be easier to already have the nav bar for apps that are better suited for it, then go away on ones you want full screen for, but this is still a lot better than the immersive module for xposed. Thanks again.
