[Q] Best Prepaid US Carrier for Telus Nexus S - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello folks,
I've tried searching the forums for this topic, but can't really narrow down my answer. I have a rooted Nexus S from Telus Mobility, model i9020 and am wondering if there are reccomendations for a prepaid (voice and data preferably) US SIM card?
Not sure about if my model only works on specific carrier or all? Best plans out there, etc? Basically I am travelling from Ontario, Canada to New York City. Please feel free to PM me directly or respond to thread. Thanks in advance for all your help.
Cheers!

If it's I9020T ----> T mobile (only)... 30$/month gives you 100 min + 5GB data
50$/month gives you unlimited min + EDGE data
60$/month gives you unlimited min + 2GB data
70$/month gives you unlimited min + 5GB data
All prices + tax

Yours won't work on T-Mobile because you have a i9020A, like the rest of Canada except for wind. So your only option I believe is AT&T. Not sure about the Verizon spectrum and I think sprint is CDMA only? Anyways you won't work on tmo, sadly.

Thanks, I've heard from others that AT&T may be the only way to go. I have gone to the AT&T website to look for prepaid SIM card plan info, but will not really work. Is there another resource to look up to find out plan info and/or where to purchase them?

AT&T has prepaid but expensive for a good prepaid plan ... something in the north for 70$+ would be the way to go...
Sprint and Verizon are CDMA networks ...

help! prepay sim for htc desire in New york, which to buy for DATA???

i have a uk vodafone desire, its custom with aosp roms and us unlocked.
I am going to new York for a week and i need to get a pre pay sim, mainly just for data, i don't care about calls and texts as i just want access to email and Skype to call home.
I have looked at some of the sites, but i dont know which one to get, can anyone recommend one?
I have a truphone simcard here.
which i need to pay£10 to get the membership this will give me local rates in uk or usa no matter where i am then i can buy a USA number for £5 and then buy some credit maybe £10 may do.... so that's £25 about $50, so i guess thats the bench mark. The desire is quad band so should work over there.
Did you take your trip already?
Your UK Desire doesn't have any 3G bands for the USA, so you'll be stuck with 2G/EDGE. T-Mobile USA has a $1.49/day data pass that is "unlimited". They throttle after 30 MB daily usage, but the speed reduction only shows up in 3G mode. You won't get 3G so you won't notice. It'll just be slow all the time...
If you want faster than EDGE you'll need a separate device.
Missed it. As been already. Bought a samsung fakeberry while I was there. Expensed the topups. Was just for email, for 5days.
But thanks I will look at t. Mobile next time. I bought at&t..... they suck. With the new job I will be going NYC regularly.

Okay, well if you will be visiting the USA regularly, you may want to consider buying in the US a phone with T-Mobile US compatible 3G frequencies. Most of the T-Mo US phones also have UMTS 2100 for the UK, so you'll get 3G back home.
Be warned, T-Mo US is pretty choppy too, but you get a better deal for data than AT&T.
Another option as long as we're talking new hardware - you could buy a prepaid MiFi device from Virgin Mobile USA (CDMA carrier, runs on Sprint's network) and purchase data for that. Use the wifi on your phone to tap into that instead of data roaming; and you can also run your laptop/tablet/etc on it. It won't do you much good anywhere outside the USA, but for some this is a viable option.

[Q] Verizon TP2 flash options?

I have a Verizon TP2, fully unlocked (SIM and hard SPL), currently running Energy ROM. I've been using it for the past year successfully in Europe with various prepaid SIM plans, but now I'm back in the US and want to flash to a no contract, all-inclusive plan. My main concern is getting unlimited data for email and various apps like Google maps. I have a new job based in Boise, ID, but will be traveling around the US quite a bit for work. From what I've researched, the only option to flash a Verizon-branded TP2 with service in Boise is Cricket, as MetroPCS does not have coverage in that area. Is this correct, or all there alternate prepaid options like Straight Talk that people have successfully flashed? Unfortunately, Cricket's $55 unlimited Android option is pricier than similar plans offered by Boost, Revol, and Virgin, but it seems those companies will only work for Sprint-branded TP2/network. Maybe there is another prepaid carrier option that I'm overlooking, but I've searched and couldn't find anything for certain. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

[Q] What plan to get?

Hi guys,
This may really be irrelevant to android or the nexus s but since i spend the most time in these forums and i cant find anywhere else to put this question i thought i might ask it here.
I'll be travelling the US this coming April for 3 weeks. Since i will be calling US numbers a lot (to make bookings and stuff) i decided not to go for roaming. I also want a data plan so I can tether if neccessary.
Anybody know of any prepaid data and voice plans? Also, my phone is a Nexus S I9020T from the UK (unlocked). Thanks
Well if u have tmo bands, you're gonna have to get tmo plans (or their prepaid company, idk what its called) for 3g use/tether.
Unfortunately I'm not on tmo so idk what pricing they offer. You'll just have to research their sites. Sorry
Edit: I just remembered that tmo USA now offers a prepaid unlimited everything plan. Not sure how that affects tethering but I wouldn't be surprised if ur nexus was able to pull it off. Just search into that.

T-mobile will offer both monthly no contract plans and prepaid.

[Q] Traveling to Germany - Advice Needed

I have a Nexus 5 on Sprint right now. Their data and voice plans in Germany are kind of insane. I was thinking of getting a SIM overseas and throwing it into my Nexus 5.
Any recommendations on who to use as a carrier? What it might cost? and Anything special I might need to know about my Nexus 5?
I originally had it active on T-Mobile, but to move it to Sprint I had to factory reset. I am assuming I may need to do that overseas.
Also, I know T-Mobile has some insane plan for personnel using their post-paid plan, does anyone know if they have a sim setup for their pre-paid that includes the International data/voice calling?
I tried searching but didn't find anything that matched what I was looking for!
Thanks in advance!

I'm also on Sprint and you're right, their rates are skyhigh.
I spent most of my summer in Berlin last year as part of a study abroad program. Since I'm not sure where you are going I can't exactly recommend the best service for your area. However Telekom and O2 have very good service across Germany and across most of Europe. Without a German bank card (EC Karte) your options are kind of limited. You will only be able to have a prepaid plan. I went with O2 as they had great service in Berlin and they had a very inexpensive roaming plan for when I was in Poland. I went with the O2 Smart Loop plan. For about 40 Euros a month you can get 3GB of data, 100 minutes (0.09/min thereafter), and sms. Since I was using mostly data and was only going to make calls in an emergency this plan worked for me. Also in Germany you are not charged for incoming sms or calls, so anyone can call you and you are not billed, they are.
The N5 should work just fine on any network in Germany. I used an N4 last year (purchased it just for the trip and sold it to buy an N5) and had no issues. I did swap sims with several friends and I never had to reset my device. Just had to select the new apn and go from there. It was very simple.
In regards to T-Mo, they only allow the international text/data if you sign up for a post-paid Simple Choice Plan. The calls are a flat rate 0.20/min. Looking through their prepaid plans I can't find anything that allows international use. :/
That is great info. Thank you much!

[Q] Can you recommend a pre-paid plan for a visitor visiting US?

Hello everyone.
I have a nexus 5 and I visit US 3 times a year, each time for 3 weeks. I used to use my european simcard but now I am considering getting some sort of pre-paid plan (with more toward a data usage rather than call minutes usage). If you have any recommendation (and the network should be compatible with nexus 5) please let me know.
Maybe something like 2-3 GB per month and each time I am visiting I can buy a 1 month top-op for it.
Thanks.

The national carriers that are compatible with Nexus 5 are T-Mobile and ATT. ATT is basically evil and I hate them. T-Mobile is owned by Deutsche Telekom, which may or may not mean anything to you coming from Europe. The problem with T-Mobile is that while they are "national" they are not "universal". If you get out of the major markets you're going to be challenged for service. T-Mobile was very late to the LTE party, but this means the places they have it (which is a great many places indeed by now) it is among the fastest service available - all 4th Generation equipment.
T-Mobile recently bought Metro PCS, so that might be the best choice for a pre-paid SIM. They also offer direct no contract service so even that might work? I found out about a year ago ATT too has pre-paid offerings but I don't know much about it.
Your only options are AT&T and T-Mobile. I have my Nexus 5 on AT&T and I get good coverage. They have some decent prepaid plans here: http://www.att.com/shop/wireless/plans/prepaidplans.html but you have to add more money to add data.
What about AT&T and T-Mobile's MVNOs?

try a keepgo data only sim, which uses att network, just do the math on your length of stay, i did a price of 11 days in the screenshot -
$65= 500mb (fair use) of lte data per day (in US only),
http://www.keepgo.com/order
i know not, if you could get it cheaper from tmobile of att, prepaid..
Check out straight talk. $45 a month unlimited text and min 2.5 GB at 4g speeds then throttled to 2g and unlimited data. You can choose at&t or T-Mobile as a network when you get the starter pack.

+1 on StraightTalk. It is actually 3GB now. I got a text from ST direct to confirm.
Note that your European Nexus 5 is probably the European one D821 which uses different LTE bands to the USA D820 meaning your probably won't get 4GB speeds, but I get 1Mbit-6Mbit on 3G on StaightTalk on my Nexus 4 in USA (just today bought a Nexus 5).
Suggest you order from ST and deliver to a friend in USA, and register and buy a month's credit before you land in USA, so its working on landing.
I do the equivalent opposite direction, I visit UK and use GiffGaff which is about half the cost of StraightTalk
If you're staying in a decent sized city (aka one with good tmobile coverage), tmobile's $30 plan (100 minutes, unlimited text & 5gb data) could be a good option.
Or, like many others have said, straight talk's $45 plan is a good balance for minutes & data.
