Strange incident with CWM - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hello, yesterday i was changing rooms and i was wiping everything trough cwm 5.0.2.3 carebear.jrodd.
After wiping i went to choose zip and then i was sent back to main menu, i could choose any option from main menu, but behind options was waiting for me, tiny android fella with open box and some sort of a arrow sign.
I tried at least 15 times to get past that android fella and his freaking box with arrow jumping out of it , but i could not.
i could use nexus s soft buttons and at the bottom of screen was message saying "back button disabled".
i had to remove battery{ i didnt know what to do/i didnt actually have any other options, that i knew about}, then i powered back in to CWM and flashed rom.
everything works fine since then.
did any of u knows what happened?
i flashed lots of roms and i always trying to do everything up to code, but something like this happened to me for the first time.
it wasnt the most pleasant expierence

the same thing happened to me once on my ns4g. I had to pull the battery.

try flash recovery img at fastboot and then see if you can get in recovery

As long as it is working OK now then all is good.
Happens every now and again.

Ok this has happened to me a couple of times and from what i have found if i press both up and down volume buttons and power button in random combos after about second or third try it sorts it self out. I have tried to create the error and from what i have seen its if you are a lil heavy handed and either press the volume up and down together to start with or the power with one of the others at the same time it does some weird lock on going back or rebooting or anything really. don't think its isolated to the version of CW as i've had it on older builds

It's caused by scrolling through the menu options 3 times. It's actually a feature. I forget where I read it but apparently back in the day there was a dude with a broken power button who couldn't select things in CWM so Koush put in that feature just for him. I believe one of the other buttons works to select items when that's enabled. To get out of it just keep scrolling up or down through the menu options 3 more times.

You ended up in the stock recovery. Hold power then press volume down OR volume up (cant remember which) and you'll be in stock recovery.
Also, the physical buttons are disabled when you press vol up and vol down at the same time. Do it again to return to normal.

happened to my yesterday again, after six months of problems free.
anyway nothing to be scared about.
thank u for answers, i kinda forgot about that thread... LOL

[Q] Power Button Not Working

Hi guys,
I have a little problem where my phone's power button will not function in any way, long presses, short, almost embedding my thumb in it, all to no avail. This is doubly dissapointing as I have just installed the latest dexter plus patch to fix the problem. I still had the problem on the previous version and I thought a clean start may fix it. The only way I can get the screen on is to press the media play button! Which of course isn't doing anything on dexter.
Hunches:
I have been playing with a light sensor program and using a 3 second press to turn the phone off, I am only thinking this is related as when I re-installed then turned off the phone using a battery pull, that now the media gallery button will now not work at all, so that is a change.
Second, the power button is buggered. Seems unlikely as everthing feels normal, no big drops have occurred from heights, and the button is travelling in and out as usual.
I have also noticed that as soon as I re-insert a battery that the phone starts immediately, the M pops up as if it is already posting. So maybe it is stuck down?? Again, I don't think so, as the mechanism is working per usual.
If anyone can help it would be fantastic, you guys haven't let me down yet, and this thing is purring, but unfortunately I cannot use it lol. Just my luck.
Thanks in advance
another thing, still not solved
Another thing is happening, the phone screen turns on "after" pressing the power button, it may be once or a few times, and then pressing the gallery button.?!?!
Also, at random times it plays a podcast on my phone, the exact same podcast, and from the start, though the duration may be a few seconds then repeat, or it may go for ages, its quite a rude podcast too which has caused me to throw my phone under the car seat to shut it up when people have been trying to talk to me, as you can imagine its quite embarassing.
There are no services or apps running that I can find related to music, it may happen after pressing the camera button, or opening a website.
It is still going really fast though. And I have also reinstalled the light sensor program so I can turn it on and off without causing damage to the power button.
Thanks again everyone.

please clarify
sure, so the only way I can get the screen to turn back on, after turning off as per display power saving preferences, is by pressing the power button, maybe a couple of times, then following that up by pressing the gallery button next to the shutter button, pressing the gallery button doesn't seem to be working to turn the screen on now, but this combo is.
I hope that helped.
Cheers.
EDIT:::
The gallery button alone is working again. sorry guys.
You might just want to reflash it to stock to see if this resolves the problem.
Yeah I think I may have to.
Before I do., I was reading a post on a different forum where another person was having a similar issue. They seemed to solve the problem by using rom manager to boot to a manual restore menu where there was a button tester section, after using it the power button worked for them. I tried but after resetting it displayed a triangle graphic then rebooted.
Is there any way to do this with our open recovery program or any other utility to test the functionality or maybe reset the button or apply a patch etc.
Thanks again :-D

Getting Frustrating
Alright so I followed your advice on your videos on how to reflash to stock, so of course my bootloader does not show up the same as yours on the video. I can get to the bootloader fine, using the button combo or by using quick boot > bootloader, both have the exact same result, the boot loader screens as follows:
Bootloader Fastboot mode
80.89
and that is it....
Also, my computer using rsdlite does not acknowledge the phone, not omap drivers loading etc. Followed your instructions exactly.
This is frustrating me to no end lol.
I am guessing that because I can get to the bootloader with combo no problem, that the buttons physical connections are working.. At least thats a positive.
Can I flash to stock with openrecovery? Or maybe to an earlier version of Dexters froyo? Other ideas?
Any help would be much appreciated guys, trying to use this phone at work with light sensors to turn off screen is not as easy as they say. OMG....
Thanks so much

The fastboot bootloader isn't the right one. So... if you hold volume up + camera shutter while powering on you end up in fastboot? That's really weird.
Maybe your keys have been remapped somehow? Does anyone know a chord to boot fastboot? Perhaps check to see if your USB port is clean?
Lmao
Just my luck to have a weird problem. I thought it may have been remapped so I have been trying the program buttonremap. It doesn't seem to let me do anything except stop the buttons I re assign doing anything :'(
Does anyone have a proper key mapping file that I can replace with my faulty one to hopefully fix it?
Or any other ideas?
Cheers everyone

Ok installed anyunlock it allows you to use any physical button to unlock the screen. It doesn't respond when the Power button is pressed, it responded fine to volume rockers, gallery and shutter though.
Anyone know if this would mean for sure its a physical problem before I crack it open and try and fix it.
Thanks guys.

Breakthrough!
I am pretty sure I have fixed the problem, I tapped the phone fairly hard on its sides and back, and lo and behold after a battery pull and replacement it didn't turn itself on, I waited, nothing, so then I held the power button and it started up!!!!
But....I have another problem that happened before that, I am stuck in the boot animation that open recovery uses before going into its program (i.e. where you can load nandroid, wipe dalvik cache etc).
I was about to load a new rom, and was in open recovery, had installed it and about to do the reset and the phone turned itself off, and thats when I got the problem with the sticking boot animation.
So just to be clear, I am stuck in a boot loop, but not with the M logo, the restore logo.
I hope the power button solution can help someone else, as random as it is.
If anyone could help me get out of this boot loop without flashing stock that would be great. ( i can get to the real bootloader now btw)
Thanks again everyone.
Solved it all
Just took the sd card out and rebooted. And the power is getting better after banging it.

So, is your conclusion is that the button was stuck and the banging freed it? It doesn't restick?
The Button is not perfect still. Sometimes over sensitive Occasionally it will not even work but it works most of the time. I am just wondering what cleaning solution I could use to free it some more.
It has certainly been a trying problem. Cheers for the help.
Now I need to figure out why I have this strange ghosting on the top of my screen.....

Samsung Galaxy S2 Power Button Not Working
Hi Guys,
Any solution for the power button problem? Current latest Android 2.3.3 Samsung Galaxy S2 also having the same power button problem. Most of the time I can't use my power button to turn on/off the screen (wake/sleep) and there's no menu for long tap as well. Luckily it does wake when i press the only physical Samsung center button.
What i have already tried: Factory Reset, disable Power Saving Mode, Spare Part+ (apps), Screen Off and Lock (apps), and all won't help.
Is there any current updates or patches to allow the power button to work as usual?
Thank you.

[Q] What should the power button do?

Hi all, I'm one of the "new to the gtablet world thaks to Woot" crew. First, thanks for what you all do here, it's a great resource.
I've managed to install the TnT Lite v4.3.0 wthout any problems and everything seems to be running well. My question is, when i hit the power button on the side, it shuts the tablet down and to turn it back on i have to hold the power button down and it has to go through the entire boot process.
Maybe thats what it is suppose to do, but being used to my iphone i imaged it would just turn off the screen and hn bring back up the lock screeen whn it was pushed again. Am i wrong or did i do something wrong when installing? Is it a setting change?
I know this question may be dumb, I'm not as tech-ignorant as this post may make it seem.
Thanks again.
A long press on the Power button should power it up. Once it's gone through the full boot cycle, a short press on the Power button should put it into sleep mode. When in sleep mode, another short press should bring it back to wake mode. A long press on Power while the gTab is fully awake should bring up a dialog box that asks what you want to do, go into Airplane Mode, Shutdown, etc. If you choose shutdown, you'll get another dialog box that asks you to confirm with a yes/no.
I am using the Stock Enhancement so maybe it works differently from yours but mine has functioned this way consistently from the time I got it, even before I loaded the Stock Enhancement.
did you try to press the "power" button lightly. when you press it lightly, it should just turn off the screen. If you press the power button and hold it for a sec, you should see a popup choice (shutdown, sleep, air mode, etc). I agree that the power button is a little sensitive to me as well and I have been using mine for 3 months and it is getting a little bit "wear".
So, it is just my solution, and it may or may not work for you. Since you are running tnt lite (not working on Vegan rom). You can download an app from android market called "Tap Tap App" power button (free)
https://market.android.com/details?id=net.maicas.android.wsleep&feature=search_result
and it will place a icon to your screen or notification bar. It basically turns off your screen, and you can press the volume buttons to turn the screen back on. I have been using this solution for a month now, and have no issues so far.
I'm pushing the button very lightly, and it appears to shut the machine down, or makes it unesponsive. Then I have to hold it down for quite a while to get it to do anything, which makes the machine reboot. When i hold down the botton (when the machine is on) I do get the options, and can put it ito sleep mode that way, and then a light touch will turn it back on. But obviously this is not the way it is suppose to run.
Is there a way to reinstall TnT or shoul i try one of the other ROMS?
Actually I think that is a problem with 4.30. If you install clemsyn's kernel it should fix it. Pershoot's may work too but I only tried clemsyn's.
It sounds like a sleep-wake issue. Like wall_fodder said, you can try to install Clemsyn or pershoot kernel. before you do install the kernel or reflash it, make a backup through clockworkmod and use titanium to backup your apps and data.
I am using 4.2.5 and very stable. Yes, you can reflash it with 4.2.x or vegan 5.1 through clockworkmod.

thanks, is there a step by step on this someplace?
hey all, thanks again, i restarted it in recovery mode and now everything works fine, nothing new installed or changed. Thanks so much...
I heard mixed results about 4.3.0 and sleep. For me, it works (as well as others). But some have reported issues. I'm not sure why that is -- maybe a data wipe is needed?
fyi, the recover reboot only helped the sleep issue for about two presses of the sleep button. However, I installed the Clemsyn kernel through Clockwork Mod and now it works great (after several tests). I had installed tnt 4.3.0 and 4.3.1 directly without CWM. So installed CWM on top of tnt4.3.1 then installed Clemsyn. Probably not the correct way to do it, but everything is working right now.
Lots of hail marys from this newbie while i was doing it though.

Power Button Issue

I have been having odd power button issues since updating to 2.3.4. It is almost like it is getting stuck or something.
Sometimes when I hit the power button to turn off the screen, the screen goes off for half a second then comes back on. This also happens when going from off to on (i.e. flicker on then back off), but it seems rarer.
Sometimes when I hit the home button (and just the home button), it takes a screenshot like I am hitting the button as well even though I am not.
All of this is fixed by just hitting the power button a few times.
Needless to say it is annoying. I thought it might be something mechanical, but I took the case off the back and the issue still occurred. It also seems like the button is clicking then unclicking (i.e. not getting stuck). I had no issues prior to updating to 2.3.4.
Anyone else had this happen or know a fix or workaround?
Yes! I have the same exact problem after the update!!
Glad to see I'm not the only one.
It's very annoying.
My backlight turns on by itself randomly and often if you press the power button to turn the screen off, it goes off then comes back on or flickers on and off. The power button doesnt always turn the screen back on either.
It also gets stuck where I press the home screen and it keeps taking pictures.
HTC better fix this!

I have the exact same problem too since upgrading! I have disabled the screenshot function in build.prop but that only stops the repeated screenshots part of the problem. The main problem with the power button still persists.
I'm having this too, its come and gone to different extents - pretty sure it was happening a bit before the update though.
I'm worried it is mechanical, I couldn't get it to happen with the back cover off but it could have just been coincidence. I can live with having to press the button again every so often but the screenshot thing annoys the hell out of me!
Since the update I've experienced an issue with my power button as well. Sometimes when I hit the button to turn the screen on, nothing happens. At first I thought it was just me but it happens at least a couple of times a day and never happened before the update.
I don't normally turn my screen off by pressing the power button so I can't report on that. Guess I should count my blessing that the screen shot function is not acting up.
Thanks for posting cause was beginning to think it was just me.
FIX!
I found a fix for this, in your build.prop remove the framework line for screen shots and then go in recovery and whipe cache partition twice as well as dalvic twice!
Cheers!

I was having the same problem with the power button and was thinking it was hardware thanks for the heads up..
am I like the only one without this problem >.< lol. lucky me
I have this same problem too, I believe its connected to the screenshots but i don't know how to turn it off easily (how do I get into build prop?)
This is definitely after the update, I had absolutely no problems with the power button prior to the update.
I don't have any power button isues at all on my European Sensation (2.3.4 still S-On yet). Playing around it just for a week. But the Screenshot thing is a feature not a bug!
Just press <power button> + <Home> to take a screenshot. I like it.
I just starting having this issue yesterday too. Thought it was my power button getting stuck but good to see it's not a hardware problem and hopefully HTC fixes this.

I think you're right. As a test, I used AntTek App Manager to freeze "Scribble" which is also known as com.htc.mysketcher and I haven't had the issue yet. I believe this component is responsible for monitoring for the key combo for taking screenshots. Certainly, after freezing it, the Power+Home combo no longer works for taking screenshots.

I have just tried this but I still have the issue. Sometimes the power button won't wake up the screen and sometimes when I power off the screen it only stays off for a second and then lights up again.
I have this issue too, but I don't think it is software related problem.
It is, as the phone sometimes recognize a power button click as 2 clicks (screen goes off and on).
To see what I mean, go to Recovery and try to navigate through menus - when you're clicking power to enter any menu, sometimes you jump back, as if you were clicking "Go back"...
So, if the issue is even in Recovery mode, so it is not software related. I even restored my stock 2.3.3. soft and the issue is still there. I think it's a mechanical defect

The strange thing is, I even downgraded to 2.3.3 and I still have the problem. I have even flashed stock HBOOT and Recovery but the problem remains. I just don't understand it because it certainly wasn't happening before I upgraded.
Add one more person to the screenshot-club. Haven't had any other problems, but sometimes the phone just keeps taking screenshots when I'm pressing the home key. Extremely annoying, but luckily this is usually solved by tapping the power button. Ofc afterwards you have to clean your gallery of useless pictures... Argh!

[Q] Nexus S i9020A Bricked due to failing power button - Odin seems the last hope?

Hi everyone,
INTRO:
So the power button on my Nexus S broke. No big deal, I remapped it to the search button and used the volume rocker to wake the device; an option that was embedded in Cyanogenmod9.
Then I upgraded to CM10... since I did that on top of CM9, my volume rocker option was still enabled, but the option is no longer in CM10's GUI.
I had some annoying issue and thought maybe I should wipe my phone; which I did.
Sadly, I realized that my "wake using volume rocker" option was no longer enabled, and there is no GUI to turn it back on.
I then found a .zip package that was supposed to enable the option but, I guess I went too fast, now my phone is stuck on a bootloop.
THE PROBLEM:
Since my power button is broken, I cannot navigate in the fastboot menu to recovery and fix the ROM.
Worst, since the power button is somehow shorted (i.e.: it powers on automatically when I insert the battery) Fastboot is not working properly and my PC never sees my phone, so you can forget about fastboot boot recovery.img
So: boot loop, power button broke, no recovery, no fastboot. =(
I searched quite a bit and found out you could get the Nexus S in download mode and get it to work with ODIN using a USB JIG.
I made myself such a JIG and successfully put the phone in some kind of download mode where my PC sees it, fastboot devices yields nothing *but* ODIN sees the phone!
So a glimmer of hope except for the fact that finding the .tar files for the Nexus S seems impossible...
Thoughts? Suggestion? TIA!
Francis // XC3N
Oh BTW:
-Yes I saw the other posts, but none of them mention the odin files
-Yes, I know fastboot is better; but it's not working and:
-No, I can't see the device on 3 different PCs using 3 different OSes and 3 Different cables when in fastboot mode
I mean by that last line that *nothing* shows in device manager in Win7 or XP and *nothing* shows in lsusb on ubuntu
So unless someone has an idea it looks like Download mode is the only way my PC sees my phone...
My power button done the same thing, I googled around and found a solution that worked for me.
It's somewhere here on xda but I don't got the link, basically everytime I booted into the bootloader I couldn't move the cursor with the volume button because the phone thought I was holding the power button, so I carefully tapped the casing around the power button and rebooted the bootloader and eventually I had control, it took 5-6 attempts to get it going but it did fix the power button for me.
I think it's something to do with the micro switches giving out after a certain number of uses.
Also it started screwing about recently so I just blew into the casing through the power button and it's behaved ever since.
In short, tap it until it works, once you have control of fastboot plug the usb in and your pc should detect it
Hope this helps, Good Luck

Hey MuckyFox thanks for your reply!
Unfortunately, that would've worked back when the power button was flimsy and still working once in a while... I did try the tapping thing but really nothing works... the button seems entirely dead and shorted. I guess at this point I might've to bring it in for repair... if the power button isn't broken then I'll be able to easily fix everything in recovery or fastboot. Sucks because I feel like I'm so close to getting it to work without spending money XD I just can't find the files for odin even though they really do seem to exist.
Allright so I found some odin files which were said to work with the i9020a
I flashed them... at some point it said "RESET!" and then odin no longer saw the device. The device is now not booting at all. FML
So this thread is going to end up like every other similar thread: I went and bought a Galaxy Nexus ;P
For posterity, these are the files you shouldn't flash on i9020A:

My power button started failing over the last couple of days. First when I would set the phone to standby it would ask me if I wanted to switch off the device, then later on it wouldnt respond at all.
Really weird solution - boot into recovery, factory restore, clear dalvik cache, voila, works good as new! (aside from losing all my settings)
Note, I barely managed to get into recovery. The power button fully stopped working halfway through and I had to take the battery out and try it a couple of times.
Oddly, even during this uber-broken phase, the power button would always switch on the device when fully switched off (not just standby) indicating to me that it wasnt just a physical broken connection.
I've mentioned this before, but a full casing for the phone with all the buttons is around $10 on eBay

So this thread is going to end up like every other similar thread: I went and bought a Galaxy Nexus ;P
For posterity, these are the files you shouldn't flash on i9020A:
BOOTLOADER : Bootloader_I9020XXJK1.tar
PDA : PDA_SOJU_GRH78_85442_SIGNED.tar
PHONE:
CSC : CSC_I9020_EUR.tar

You need stuff for SOJUA, and just the fact CSC has EUR meaning Europe in it would scare the crap out of me. Possible you just flashed stuff meant for i9020T and not i9020A.
In case anybody comes back here, I'm just gonna drop this in.

[Q] HTC One S bricked-ish

Hi,
long story short: while trying to install CM on my old one s I first flashed the boot.img as described here: h t t p : / / wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_ville. It appears that the firmware overwrote the custom recovery on a reboot, and when I entered recovery to install CM I got a screen saying "entering recovery..." in pink at the top, htc logo in the middle, and "This build is only intended for development, to not leak from HTC" (something like that) in red at the bottom. Nothing happened.
I shut it down and started it back up, and it went to boot with the same htc logo and red message at the bottom -- and froze there. Only 10+ sec power button restarts it, nothing else helps. Weird enough I noticed that if it's on a cable it won't restart but just stay off, and if it's not connected it will restart immediately, no chance to switch it off.
Here's my biggest problem: my volume rocker is brocken. Up works somewhat, but down is 95% dead. I entered the bootloader through adb before, but since I can't boot the phone anymore I can't get in anymore.
It seems to me like the best solution would be to somehow fix the volume rocker. It's not 100% dead, occasionally I could get a keypress through, so I would just suppose the contacts are a little bad and I could just polish it a little? But the phone seems a pain to take apart.
What would you suggest? Is it too easy to break the whole thing while trying to clean the contacts of the rocker?
Thanks for any help / comments!

Taking it apart is smth you can do. Ik its hard, i tried but if you're confident its your power button then do it. After you reveal the back of our phone, you can access the buttons

While that is my last resort, I'd like to avoid it. I do have a working Nexus 5 after all.

It's the volume rocker, not the power button; and it's been broken for a long time. I'm a little afraid I might rip things apart, but this makes it look outright easy: youtube.com/watch?v=6j25jajIq3g. I'll give it a try.
