Here is a link I thought I'd share to get Ubuntu running on our g2x via vnc. I am running Phoenix blood v1.6 and can confirm it is working. Pretty good job he did there.

Well, what do u mean by successful installation? this is how you do it if u use zacthespack's img downloaded in Ubuntu Installer (app)
su [ENTER]
cd /sdcard/ubuntu [ENTER] (directory where img and sh are)
sh ubuntu.sh [ENTER]
then it will ask screen size default prolly best
800x480 [ENTER]
then it will ask desktop environment 1 or 2 [Enter] (depending on the img)
1 is lxde (minimal) (quick)
2 is gnome (full) (slow)
it will load some services then take you back to promt
open the vnc app
password = ubuntu
address = localhost
port = 5900
(if using androidVNC scroll down a bit and change color format to 24-bit)
then connect if you chose gnome it may still be loading services, if so u will see grey background and black x in center...just wait it out =D

best part, as mentioned already, this is kinda kewl with hdmi out!, drawback is no usb host. blutooth mouse or presenter would do the trick especially since i would expect voice input to work
seems like theres a big push to integrate computer os with their mobile counterparts. apple has for long time, windows 8 and the new tile stuff gear toward touch, and now ubuntu pushing in the linux dept.
Uphone?
Now that Ubuntu runs on the G2X do we call it a Uphone?

I looked at that before but was and still am reluctant to try it. If you look around in those instructions is starts talking about "onboard ethernet" and there is a cfg file for "crt" and one for "hdmi." I'm pretty sure that is written specifically for the tegra dev-board which has multiple video output options as well as other hardware options that we do not.
I would be hesitant to try this on our Gtabs.

Have you tried the "conventional" approach via VNC I mentioned in post #4? I still can't get adb working with my G-tab, but I'd like to be able to run ubuntu... (esp the new netbook edition)

I've played with the VNC approach on some of my phones, but I have never really considered that a viable option as you are running Ubuntu on top of Android and using a separate app to connect to it via VNC. "Performance" takes a big hit. Running it natively is the only REAL options as far as I am concerned.
I just remember that the AC100 -- smartbook version of Toshiba's tegra2 tablet -- has been "running" ubuntu for over a month:
http://www.carrypad.com/2010/10/01/hacked-toshiba-ac100-ubuntu-10-10-is-running/
It's not yet a finished product (check out the official toshiba forum linked there), but it's in the right direction. I wonder if we could port that to our g-tablet?
There is a video of a Toshiba AC100 Ubuntu Demo on YouTube.com. I haven't posted enough messages on this site for me to be allowed to post a link here but if you do a search on YouTube for "Toshiba AC100 running Ubuntu 10.10 - Apps demo" you will find it.
Im curious wether or not there is a way for me to have a chrooted ubuntu on my transformer...? I saw something on youtube where they did it on a galaxy 10.1, and in the comments the maker of the video said it does work on the transformer.
But i am curious if anyone has tried it and is certain whether or not it work.
if this method is not possible, are there any other methods with similar results...?
... really? search before you post

The easist thing is to download Linux Installer off the market. I found that Debian (ARMv5) offers better package choices than Ubuntu (ARMv7) in that case. I have mine running off /data/local/mnt/Linux with Debian stable.

i attempted this, i managed to get debian but it did not have a gui.... How would i go about installing one.?
To get a GUI going that route you basically set it up to use VNC for running X stuff and then connect via an Android VNC client; I don't recall the name of the server but there were multple links on Google when I searched back in September.
I don't personally need X along side Android and the chroot, so I don't have it set up.
My tablet is rooted, I have Busybox, Better Terminal Emulator Pro, Terminal Emulator, Superuser, and every other hack-y type app you can think of, but if I try to run an ssh from one of the command line's, I get ' ssh: command not found'.
Should I have it, is there any way I could add it? I've got it on my Cyanogenmod build of my Desire, but I need it for vnc tunnelling sessions with the tablet, the screen is just to small on the phone!
Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Ok, so just after posting, I realised I want going in under BTEP's shell, but as soon as I did that, I had the ssh command- but it's not the right version. I'm trying to login to an Amazon ec2 server, with a .pem key, but if I try to do that with dropbear's version of ssh, I get a 'string too long' error. On my phone, I have an OpenSSH version of ssh, and that's why it works without a problem.
So my question now is, how do I get the OpenSSH version of the ssh binary into my tablet? (even though I knew it wouldn't work, I did try copying over the one from my Desire, just in case anyone suggests it)
Sent from my GT-P6200 using Tapatalk 2
I got where I wanted by using a patched version of connectbot, the irssi one which doesn't crash, accepts my pem keyhole, stays open in the background and forwards ports correctly. That, along with my discovery of the "Hacker's Keyboard", have made managing servers remotely ridiculously easy for me!
Sent from my GT-P6200 using Tapatalk 2
And just to come back on this again, Better Terminal Emulator Pro comes with OpenSSH binaries included. I don't know their specific versions, they only say "Ported to Android by www.magicandroidapps.com", but one way or another, it's great because it performs better than Connectbot (at times, with port forwarding), that was eating like 80% of my CPU, works by just pointing it to my .ssh folder, and is entirely more acceptable than any other option.
Only irritation is that the dropbear build of ssh is called just 'ssh', whereas Openssh's is 'openssh', had it been the other way around, dropbear's been 'dropssh' (the way I have it now), I'd never had a problem :/
Sure does feel lonely in this thread...

Hello!!
I have an OnePlus One, rooted and with lattest kernel, and android 5.0
what i wat to do is :
Install linux preferably Debian, but any distro is ok.
Native would be the best option so it can acces and use all the hardware.
Or via Linux deply using frambuffer.
I have read a lot, and what i can understand is that with framebuffer i can acces all the hardwarare, like mouse usb keyboard BT sound etc directly. Via vnc if i use an usb mouse y get the mouse pointer and separatly another pointer that is the one in vnc and it lags after the mouse.
I have installed debian in my oneplus one smartphone with Linux Deploy. And with vnc is rather slugish. Via XServer SDL it runs more smooth. But i have read that framebuffer is the fastest way in terms of performance. i have even read that framebuffer will get 3d acceleration and stuff. but i could be wrong.
But everytie i try to run via framebuffer i get a black screen and nothing happens. i have click the option of stop the Android giu.
But then i have to restart the phone to come out of the black screen. and if i have Android running i still get the black screen but i can snap out of it.
I want to use this tablet as my working unit. But i need to have a working linx distro that runs well enough to do all my daily work on it.
I have spend 3 weeks to try to get it to work. and read a lot and so on on my own, but now i need help.
Has anyone sucessfully run linux in OnePlus One?
Any help about how to acomplish this will be really appreciatet.
I thinks this will help a lot of people that want to have a tablet and be able to tun linux and do their everyday work on it.
specially if you travel a lot.
I have write a post very much like this regarding Onda tablet v989. Because it has another hardware. If I can get any of them to work it would be a bliz.
thanks everyone in advance.
I think the first step is to get frame buffer to work , afterwards the rest shoud be easy. I've tried compiling a kernel with fb support , but I have not had any success yet, i'm not even sure whether my device will supports it (Alcatel 918D android 2.3.5) .Building this phones kernel has been a nightmare , but finally I got it to run my own, now i have to figure out how to get Fb on this phone.

i have installed debian sed with the linux deply app. and framebuffer. i get of course black screen, but before when i dropped out of the black screen i see the terminal with different errors.
Bot now i see that framebuffer start ...ok no errors. i even try to run glxgears and i got the terminal telling me is running at about 100 fps. like its running in some monitor that is off.
I try this with my acer pc conected to the tv the tv was off and it was running about 100 fps, when i turn on the tv i saw the gears ans the speed wentdown to normal 60 fps.
So i conclude that in my Oneplus One is also running in some screen. but i get black screen.
Does this help you in any way whatsoever?
i hope we can get frammebuffer to work.
By the way running it trough the framebuffer....wil it go faster than the Xserver SDL?
It seems you‘ve had luck with setting up framebuffer console on your phone, now all you need is a library to enable window applications to access it.
Also you may post some screen shots.
Am on phone ATM, but will give you some hints tommorow.

Do you see any way?
-> Tried with Bochs but i'm new on Android World so i'm not good with this.
-> Don't care i understand much things but normaly i'm "at home with Windows Devices".
Would be nice if you can help me.

You will not get any x86 version of Windows to run since the Shield is powered by an ARM processor.

Hey
Yes i know i mean about Emulator like i wrote already Bochs or something. But i didn't found a working Bochs Edition for my Shield.
I Know there are different Archidectures etc. but i like to emulate it. If it's slow i don't care. It just have to work
BTW: For my Skill: I've a MCSE Windows 8.1 and MCSA Windows Server 2012 R2 (actually i'm learning for MCSE)
You can use virtual desktop software like Chrome Remote Desktop or VMware, but Windows can't run on the Shield itself.
There's a very very high chance that there will be an ARM version of win10. They have already announced it. Should be a developer preview online someplace. Doubt it will work straight away though.
There is a also a version of Ubuntu Linux for shield
x86 applications can be run using Eltechs Exagear and wine using Ubuntu on the shield. IE should work. Run over to the thread on running Ubuntu natively using multirom. Must have root and new recovery etc. Is not for the notice.

Worth a quick mention that exagear is 30 bucks. It's the only thing holding me up from trying to get elder scrolls oblivion running on Ubuntu for shield. Any ideas there would be great.
Hi guys
Now it works much better..
But! which Emulator do you know?
-> Bochs don't work.
-> Limbo at last it work. But on Windows 95 -> Win XP it's checking Hardware in a Loop. Win Vista or newer -> Limbo Crash..
Maybe now someone want to help me?
