recovering partitioned internal memory - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently used Frank's Tools to dual boot Ubuntu on my Tablet.
After I later realized it wasn't for me, I used the generic root kit to revert to android only OS.
I now see that my internal memory is only showing as 7.36 gb
I would like to know how I can go about recovering the partitioned memory
I have tried using frank's tools, and choosing android only but it gave me the error
"Nvflash started
nvflash configuration file error: file not found"
Some help would be much appreciated.

There should be a flash.cfg file in there- monkey around with the partition sizes and see if that fixes the issue.
I'm not familiar with Frank's tools, so can't help you there. My wild guess is that the rom files aren't unzipped and in the same folder as the nvflash executables.
You might try to download and flash the nvflash version of Prime or another custom rom since it will have the stock partition sizes.

Hi there go to little stevies thread download olife.sh and set up the enviroment put the rom you want in images boot.img system.img recovery.img
Run olife.sh and go to the option flash then select stock it will resize all the partitions and flash the rom you put in images i usually use the script just for flashing new roms makes sure i get a super clean install

I am very new to Linux and don't know much at all about their OS or ubuntu.
I know i can install it and dual boot my PC with ubuntu, or simply just run a VM of ubunt on my PC.
All i know to do in Ubuntu us open up the terminal by hitting Ctrl+alt+f i beleive
Can anyone show me a step by step way of doing so?
Stevies thread asumes you have knowlege of ubuntu, but I just don't.
Even better has anyone been able to acomplish this with windows?

You can have ubuntu run next to windows just download the wubi version from the website it lets you have dualboot and if you get sick of ubuntu you can just uninstall it like any other win program.
As for the steps to setting up there are 1000 youtube vids on how to set up adb etc on ubuntu and there very easy to follow
Once you have watched a few of those videos you will have a folder in your home folder called platform-tools thats where all the good stuff goes for android and thats where lil stevies thread pics up from..
I was completly new to linux and android when i got my gt540 but after 2-3days i was happy flashing and modding and now with my tf doing even more with the system.
If you have a little patience and dont mind watching a few youtube vids you can get the whole lot set up and done and ready for future use in an hr or so
Understanding it or what your doing is the part that will take 2-3 days lol

Possible to boot Ubuntu from Sd card?

Hi,
I know there's already a thread about Ubuntu, but I ran across this, and it looks a little different:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=10306407#post10306407
It looks like, instead of replacing the Nook Color ROM, they're booting Ubuntu from the (external, I think) sdcard.
Would it be possible to do something like this with the Gtab? If it is, maybe we could have an Android/Ubuntu dual boot?
Jim
http://nexusonehacks.net/nexus-one-hacks/how-to-install-ubuntu-on-your-nexus-oneandroid/
The above is the based info on this. It looks like, basically, they run Ubuntu under chroot (in a jail).
This seems like it'd be cool, on a Gtab!

Would it be fast like that? I used to run Android on an sd card on my old HTC Titan phone. It was slower than Molasses in winter.. Would be neat if it could be done, and was still fast.

Hi,
I don't know the answer to your question, but we run stuff under chroot all the time (mainly things like Apache httpd) for security reasons, and running under chroot doesn't add overhead. It's not like it's running a VM/hypervisor. Rather, chroot just isolates the app (in this case, Ubuntu) from "seeing" the rest of the system, so I think that if it could be done, the Ubuntu "instance" would run at native speed. Again, this would be more like a dual-boot configuration, rather than a VM type situation.
If you read through the 2nd link, it's kind of neat the way they did this, i.e., they got just a command line Ubuntu going first, then they used apt-get to bring in the X stuff on top of that, kind of like bootstrapping, at a little higher level. Also, similar to how the earlier versions of Windows worked, i.e., basically you'd boot to DOS (yikes !) then start Windows from there.
Jim
i want this soooooo bad.....
When I have some time, I wouldn't mind trying to get something like this working on Gtab, but at this point, I'd (we'd) need some guidance.
For example, would we need our own img file for the Gtab, or could we use the one that was linked on those sites? Those are, I guess, for Nexus One and for EVO, so the native code would be for Snapdragon. Would those work on the Gtab, which is Tegra 2?
I originally hesitated posting this in the Development forum, but maybe it should be. I don't know ...
Jim
There is an ubuntu image that runs on the external micro-sd card. You have to change the boot loader to run it. Right now you have to have an external mouse and keyboard.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=894960
It does not modify the internal storage so you can restore a boot image from Clockwork and boot back into android.

Hi,
I read through some of that thread for awhile now (not too closely), but I had the impression that the Ubuntu in that thread replaced the normal Gtab ROM?
So, is the only thing that gets replaced on /sdcard the boot image? If that's the case, then it wouldn't allow a dual boot, without using CW and restoring the appropriate boot image?
Sorry, not arguing, but just trying to understand...
Jim
It uses a custom boot image to load ubuntu from the micro sd card. It will not boot android. You have to reflash the boot image to boot back into android. There is a post in that thread (#57) where a dual boot capable boot image is being asked for.

I think I remember that "request" in that thread ...
I guess that the nice thing about the approach at the beginning of this thread, if it could be possible, would be both runnable "images" (the Gtab/Android and the Ubuntu) would exist (but not run) simultaneously, the former on the internal SDCARD, and the latter on the external microSD card...

ext2 support?
Hi,
I've been reviewing the shell scripts that are used for this (downloaded from the link from the original NC thread), and it looks like almost everything would be ok, except:
- It looks like the ubuntu.img file is an image with an ext2 fs on it (they do a loop mount on it). I tried "busybox modprobe ext2" on my Gtab (stock TNT 3452), and it looks like it doesn't have the .so or whatever to support ext2. Does anyone know if it's possible to get ext2 support on the Gtab?
- I was hoping to at least try the mount, to see what's there, but since I can't, I'm still assuming that the ubuntu.img was compiled for the NC, so I'm still wondering if I could get it mounted, if the code in there would work? According to:
http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/28/nook-color-processor-revealed-arm-cortex-a8-based-ti-omap3621/
it's an "ARM Cortex A8", whereas the Gtab uses a Tegra 2, which I guess is an ARMV7?
Thanks,
Jim

[Q] Ubuntu Installation help

The instructions for installing ubuntu are not that clear. so what is the ROOTFS and whad do i do with it. also i am trying to make it dual boot with android as the default opearating system. So what kernel do i need and what else do i need to get the touchpad working and wifi working
I'm trying to figure this out myself. I really don't have much time on my hands to figure out all the 1337 lingo surrounding the installation process of the dual boot ability. For once, I'd like someone who's technically literate enough to write down all these instructions in a dummies language... much like my gtab for dummies website in my siggy.
Just remember. If you're going to ask questions here. Make sure you apologize a lot of times. 1337s don't like questions.

And what "1337"?
"Before using this pack back up any data that you may have on your device, this method is destructive to data, and will wipe everything. If you plan on dual-booting with android you will need to download a full system like prime and put the images (system.img boot.img recovery.img) in images/
This package does not include the ubuntu rootfs. You should have already downloaded this from the link located on this forum post located http://rootzwiki.com/showthread.php?...he-transformer or http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...p?p=16097869if you haven't downloaded it yet it is 950MB so start it downloading and grab a coffee. Decompress the gzipped tar to images/
With that taken care of, here are the instructions for use:
1) select whether you want to dual boot, and which OS you want as your default.
2) make absolutely sure that you have backed up your data, everything past this point is going to destroy your data.
3) run the appropriate sh for the choice you have made in step 1
flash-purelinux.sh for a pure ubuntu setup, this is no android recovery is ubuntu single user mode.
flash-linux-android.sh for installing android and linux dual boot with android as the default OS. To boot into linux hold power+vol-down until prompted on screen to press vol-up.
flash-linux.sh for installing android and linux in dual boot with android and linux, linux is the default OS, to boot into android hold power+vol-down until prompted on screen to press vol-up"
From the ubuntu thread's OP, instructions for doing this. Says put rootfs in the /images folder of the flash kit along with the nvflash imgs from the android rom you want to dualboot with. Even shows you the options for which dualboot method you want and how to use it. If you consider this l33tspeak, I'm wondering what you consider basic English. If you can't even understand basic instructions, then don't use it. Too many people come into somewhat advanced technical methods for enhancing tech products and expect people to hold their hands through the methods. Of you want to understand these things, start googling and take some college courses. Xda isn't the place for learning technology.

word, thats what i thought, thanks. guess il have to hunt down the revolver nvflash files or bite the bullet and use prime (not that prime is a bad rom at all, im just used to revolver). im sick of decompiline and editing xml's in windows, i get errors all the time., and id rather not use my laptop at all, it shuts off randomly all the time. dual booting ubuntu onto my tf would eliminate my need to use my laptop or windows all together.
well when i tried to start it it said failed didnt find bootloader
I used cuckoopt's windows kit's dual boot option, and it seems to have worked, but it then just booted into android.

The system.img, boot.img, and recovery.img are all from the Android ROM you want to dual-boot Ubuntu with, so either you download them (some ROMs aren't released in nvflash img format, so you'd need to install it and back it up with nvflash first) or you use the images you generated from running your backup.

Sh*t, I read the first post three times and I didn't see that. Time for me to go to bed!
Thank you very much! Now it MUST work.
Another question: is there any chance to hard-brick the TF so that it can't be 'rescued'? Once I read that it's nearly unbrickable cause of NVFLASH. Is that true?
If you have an nvflash-able TF (which you do, or else you wouldn't have been able to perform the backup), you can't brick it. Even if you wipe the entire internal flash, you can still boot into APX mode, which has complete write access to the internal flash.
That's good to hear! I just asked cause the Galaxy S is brickable if you flash a wrong kernel or something like that. So it's nice to have a unbrickable tab.
It comes down to what hardware the phone has and what the community has figured out how to access. Most phones and devices have a hardware-based development interface (like APX mode for the Transformer or whatever RSDLite uses on older Motorola phones). These interfaces are generally burned onto read-only ROMs for the sole purpose of making the device un-brickable.
If the device doesn't have one of these interfaces, or the community hasn't figured out how to access it, you run the risk of bricking.

I just made a thread explaining the Transformer boot process:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=17888843
I'll expend further on it, but this should help everyone understand where custom ROMs and Ubuntu fit into it.
Thanks a lot! I finally got the dualboot working. Android boots without any problems, in Ubuntu I have to configure the keyboard layout and nothing goes on, so I have to wait...

[Q] Safe, Simple Ubuntu/Android dualboot with (SL101) Slider?

I'm interested in dualbooting my SL101 slider with Ubuntu. I currently have a semi-stock ICS installed (9.2.1.17) and rooted. Naturally, this is an sbk2 device.
I have a big microSD card and I have seen instructions on dualbooting from microSD, (here, post #3: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1537566) but I have some questions:
1) My ideal would be to flash Ubuntu to the microSD card and leave my ICS installation untouched on the internal memory. I would like to just change which partition the device tries to boot from. Is this possible?
1b) It looks like the instructions referenced above flash "ubuntu-sdcard.zip" over my ICS installation and then require me to reflash ICS each time that I want to switch OSes. Is there any way to avoid this?
1c) If I need to reflash the rom every time, I would like to use the one that I am currently running, post OTA modifications. I tried using "dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p4 of=ics.img", copying the ics.img to my desktop, using "blobpack blob LNX ics.img" and inserting the blob file that resulted into an existing ASUS kernel update zipfile. This didn't work; CWM recovery 5.8.3.4 gives the error "installation aborted" every time I try to install this file. (I have turned checksum verification off.)
1d) Is there any program that will psuedo-automate switching between operating systems? A one-touch choice of ubuntu or ICS to do the flash and boot automatically?
2) As of July 2012, which are the best ubuntu.img and ubuntu-sdcard.zip to use? What are my choices? Can I update Ubuntu online via normal "Update Manager" methods after installation?

Good, you searched and found the thread! Make sure the microSD is a high class (8 or 10) or else it will be super laggy and IMO not worth it. (If you want lag you can just run Ubuntu or any other linux distro in a chmod format over VNC)

1) The .zip files are just afaik to change which installation you're booting from, so the installations I think are untouched (aside from the kernel)

1d) Not for Sbkv2 that I know of, one could be made though, but it would require a computer to run. [Q] Ubuntu SBKv2 & Asus Stock Apps.

First does anyone have a .zip for the Asus stock apps? I had an older copy of the revolver removed apps file and I accidentally deleted it, the one that is currently linked on the revolver ROM shows as corrupted.
Has anyone been able to successfully Dual-boot Ubuntu on sbkv2 devices? What is your current method to doing so?
I tried the modified version of OLiFE with wheelie but ended up in an APX boot loop and had to flash back to stock.
I tried to use my own ROM (revolver) and the net-install version of ubuntu so perhaps I 'injected' them incorrectly.
Could not find much of a guide to do this...
Was interested in trying franks tools because that seems to be the easiest option (My main OS is windows but I have Ubuntu installed on an flash drive)
I tried the method here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=23428126 but I didnt add or copy the .lib modules and my recovery was internal sd access only (working on updating that)
Plus the whole pseudo dual boot thing seems like a pain in the ass...
Any thoughts on the net install version of ubuntu?
How do you go about flashing or updating Roms when you are dual booting?
Thanks!
Wanna try my tutorial?
Well its bit messy, but i am lookign for osme fixes in ubuntu.
The Part where I get confused is the boot image and system image I may have messed up there?
Where do you place/name the net-install img?
Also as far as the rom and kernel go do you have to get that set up and then do a backup and use that or do you still have access to android recovery to flash zips?
Thanks!

So install the rom and kernel you want to use, do a backup then copy the system & boot imgs from the backup.
From what i understood you have to rename the net-install img to ubuntu.img? Is that correct?
Yeah definitely planning on using it for word editing etc (for school)
Right now I'm using team EOS nightlys for the rom and the kat kernel.
It's running very well so i might stick with that.
So you are not able to flash updates for android once you go dual boot?
Thanks I will probably try this out again when I get home later.

Backup ur data to with recovery or titanium backup.
I recommend to use normal ubuntu ( with GDM) and then install enlightment.
Why i recommend normal ubuntu, becasue it was only working libre office, but you can try something else
So far no luck still isn't working.
Maybe it's the net-installer I'm having issues with I might just try the regular ubuntu.img if franks tools aren't back up soon (I just wanted to try the easier way.)
I tried just installing linux by itself and got some penguins and scripts running but it was in apx boot loop after that.
Had to flash to stock and rebuild.
I think I might wait for kenshin to fix franks tools (which might take a while from the looks of it)

I can help u with that if you dont understand any thing of the tutorial.
IF you add me at skype (naruto.fbi any one can add me ) i can help u :].
Did you have any errors?
I had error thatkernel was to big ( 9.4 mb) i change some code adn i could flash it.
Maybe u have the same?
I hear form u soon
No errors, Have had my rom and kernel installed. Did the android backup using olife. Copied the olife backup files and renamed them (boot and system IMG files) to the images folder.
Then flashed device with dual boot tried both android and linux as the default and neither way worked.
Tried installing linux only and it doesnt work.
I just keep getting apx boot loops.
I dont have team viewer or skype so I was wondering if you might share your olife folder that you used to install (in case I was doing something wrong)
but if you have personal info in the backups i understand.
I think I might take you up on that offer and hit you up on skype or with team viewer, but maybe later this week because I'm going to be very busy with work/school for a few days.
Thanks for your help

That actually looks pretty cool, I really wanted ubuntu for a more powerful text editor and maybe a few other things.
Might be more convenient.
I'm going to try it.

If a powerful text editor is all you need, I'd say this solution is way overkill.

Yes indeed.
If you are skilled, this is quite a neat solution giving you lots of power over the Android device. But since it can be somewhat tricky for the beginner to implement, if only a GNU/Linux environment is needed, and not the control over the Android environment, it is much easier to run the GNU/Linux environment jailed, instead of Android jailed as here.
But this is of course way much cooler.

Porting CWM how to Extract stock Recovery image?

Hello Xda, i own a ZTE midnight and just a few hours ago rooted it and would like to help port CWM to my device, i was looking at this https://www.facebook.com/ClockworkMod/posts/480999728601013 and wanted to start from there but i dont know how to extract the stock recovery, any help? like i said its already rooted and i think that All ZTE devices have unlocked bootloaders so this is possible. yes i have googled it please dont bark at me.
Hi trozzul,
I too want to port it to cwm but am also not able to extract my stock recovery.
Have you tried flashify? There is an option for backup boot.img and recovery.img . I tried it but doesn't seems to work.
It does create a 0 byte file named recovery.img . Maybe it isn't working on my phone. You try it on yours.
Thankx

i sorta found out myself with playing around in a terminal emulator. would you happen to know what partition your phone is? BML or MTD? i dont know what todo if your device is BML but if you think its MTD you can try in the terminal emulator app (from play market) type in
Code:
cat /proc/mtd
enter this in and you will see around 20 MTD files. find the MTD file with "Recovery" at the end, type this in for instance (DO NOT use this code, its what my device showed the Recovery MTD for.)
Code:
dd if=/dev/mtd/mtd12 of=/sdcard/recovery.img
and it will push your recovery to your SD card (in .img format), Pretty much say your recovery was MTD9 just put in that code but replace mtd12 with MTD9 mine was about 5MB i didn't know they were that small.

To extract your stock recovery what you can do is the following to determine which partition is the recovery partition. From terminal emulator or adb shell, go to the /cache/recovery directory and look for a file called log or last_log if you cd into the /cache/recovery directory you can read the log file with the cat command: cat last_log. In the log file you will see a list of the partitions on your device. One of these will be your recovery partition, remember which partition block is your recovery partition and then run the command:
Code:
cat /dev/block/yourrecoveryblock > /mnt/sdcard/recovery.img
Let me know if you still have questions.
I had already tried it .it's BML :/
Congrates to you

Clockworkmod recovery builder website has been hit and miss recently. Overall I would strongly recommend taking a look at this guide here that will teach you the basics of porting Clockworkmod Recovery to a new device, you will also learn a lot more doing it this way, as well as it being easier to fix any issues.

You have to use Linux or OSX but Ubuntu is highly recommended. You can't use command prompt as the Windows architecture isn't designed to build and cross compile for the architecture Android is based on. Yes, you could format your old computer and install Ubuntu on that and proceed from there.

Your machine meets the minimum specs for Ubuntu (Barley) you could also check out Xbuntu or Lubuntu as well, make sure you use a 64-bit version as Android building requires that. Keep in mind with those specs you should be able to build it will just take a while to compile. For learning the basics of the Linux command line, this is a great guide just ignore the parts about Windows Power Shell (Or don't ignore them and learn twice as much!). The system requirements for Ubuntu can be found here as well for your reference. Android building does't really deal with HTML, it does deal with Java but as always the more you know the better because it just makes it easier to learn from there.

Is the operating system installed 32-bit or is the the CPU itself in your computer a 32-bit processor because if it's just a 32 -bit operating system you can still install the 64-bit version. But if it's a 32-bit processor then I'm afraid your out of luck. What you can do however is setup Ubuntu in a virtual machine on your main computer using Virtualbox.

With Virtualbox you can setup Windows and Linux side-by-side and the good thing is if you mess something up in Virtualbox you regular windows installation is unaffected, I would highly recommend checking out this video walk though guide on how to install Ubuntu 14.04 LTS in Virtualbox. You can find out if you have a 32-bit processor or 64-bit processor by going to Accessories -> System Tools -> System Information (Or just search for System Information), then look at the System Type entry if it says x64-based PC you have a 64-bit processor if it says x86-based PC you have a 32-bit processor.

My apologizes for getting back to you so late @Trozzul I just finished with my finals the other day and didn't get home till much latter then anticipated hence the delay. While you could put in another 80 GB hard drive I would recommend picking up at least a 250 GB Hard Drive (They can be found online for about $30-$40), as that way you can be sure you won't run out of room and can have your main build environment all on one drive. But you can try it with the setup you have now and you can probably get away with it. As always let me know of any questions you have happy to help :highfive:.
