Evo 3D rooting questions - General Questions and Answers

I have a HTC Evo 3D, and I absolutely love the phone. I am impressed with how much better this phone runs compared to my HTC Evo 4g. My Evo3D is stock, and here lately I have been looking into rooting it, allowing me superuser access.
The downfall, I get slightly confused to the whole thing. I am sure that I can perform the rooting task itself, but what has been keeping me from doing so, is I don't know what I am doing after I root the phone. I see stuff about flashing roms and kernels and all, but I do not understand how you do that? How do you add custom stuff? What is flashing? How do you add all the custom things? Can you add stuff to roms?
I know all of these questions come off noobish, but I am just looking for an expansion of it from other people. Anyone that has an idea of how it all works, any information provided is greatly appreciated.

[Q] To root or not to root... newbie questions

Hello All,
I am new to the forum. And the more I read on this forum and others re: rooting, the less I feel I understand. I'm decent on computers but tech speak (as I call it) somewhat eludes me. I posted this on another forum and no one has really answered my questions. Hopefully you all can give me succinct and simple answers/advice.
I have a G2 that I adore. The only thing I hate is the bloatware that came on it. I want to get rid of the crap. In searching methods to do so I learned about rooting. So now I am on the fence as to whether or not I want to root or not.
I have heard that someone people experience better performance when they root, but not many go into specifics on what kind of enhanced performance they noticed (eg. internet speed, call clarity, battery life, etc.). If I could get rid of the bloatware, get faster performance (especially when web browsing), and other benefits I wouldn't mind figuring out how to root. What kind of benefits do you notice with rooting? Is it worth rooting since it has been announced that a new version (gingerbread) is supposed to be coming out soon, or is this new version not that much of a big deal?
Is there a program or app (hopefully in the market) that will root for me? If so can it also unroot and bring me back to my original state? Is rooting that easy?
Also what is a ROM, and what does it mean to flash? I semi understand what this is. I'm not confident in my understanding of it though. I understand it to be a file or app that can alter phone settings once rooted. I do think the actual meaning and purpose of ROMs go deeper than that, but a little clarity would be helpful.
Lastly, what does clocking out mean? I have seen a few charts, and people throwing out numbers and saying they are impressive but no one describes what clocking out means. It seem to be something involving speed, but speed in what aspect (eg. web browsing?).
I have never rooted a phone before, but I am willing to try it out if the rewards and enhancements are that much greater. And I also like to tinker with and fully utilize and understand my favorite gadgets from time to time.
Android is a Linux OS. Having root access is like having admin access in Windows. You can modify the system in any way you want. You can do temp root on the G2 but with temp root, all the bloatware you have will come back after a reboot (to my understanding, please correct me if I'm wrong.)
There are plenty of guides to doing a full complete root. It includes flashing an HBOOT (the screen you get when you turn the phone on by pressing the back arrow) and that can brick your phone if done wrong. READ! READ! READ!
Flashing a ROM is like installing an OS on a computer. There are plenty of Fro-Yo (2.2 ROMS) Fro-Yo with HTC Sense on top or even Gingerbread ROMs (like CyanogenMod 7 nightlies.) You can install any of them but make sure the ROM comes from the G2 section of the forum to avoid any problems.
In my experience, Custom ROMs are MUCH faster than stock. All those extra things that they tweak/add really makes a difference. I rooted two android phones before and Custom ROMs always make the phone much more enjoyable.
Overclocking or clocking is setting the speed of the CPU. Every phone (even if they are the same phone) has a slight difference in the CPU. Some can clock higher than others and remain stable. Overclocking helps in CPU intensive apps like web browsing, and games. It makes the experience much smoother. The side effect is decreased battery life (since you are over clocking past the factory settings).
This is all I can explain to you. Hope someone else who is more experienced in Android helps you.
Thank you so much! A lot of what you said just helped make everything I have been reading make a little more sense. Thank you soo much! Here is another question what is S-Off? I have seen it in a ton of places now since researching further into rooting.

New Inspire

Hey y'all, I'm originally a forum poster on [H]ard Forums and I just got the new HTC Inspire. I've been hearing all about rooting and roming phones and I'm thinking about doing it. Problem is, I don't know much about it. I was thinking about doing it not only for the free apps but so I could completely customize my UI. If y'all could give me the pros and cons and possibly directing me to what I need or should do to root my phone I would like to know. This is my first Smart phone so I'm very interested in this process.

Probably the best way to root your phone is the inspire hack kit. Its easy to follow and there is a ton of support for it.
The main pros are free wifi tether, side loading enabled, hsupa enabled, and tons of mods.
The cons would be if you have to take it back to att you will have to go through an unrooted process. Its not to hard but still a hassle. I can honestly stay rooted is the best way to really enjoy your phone.
Stock look
ClearD rom. Ive tried it and I haven't had any problems with it.
TPC Rom. Its stock with an over clocked kernel
DHD Rom
Android Revolution is fast and stable stock look
RCMix HD fast and stable and made with transparency.
These are the ones Ive used and they all work.
Have fun with your phone.

Did you reflash the radio on any of these Roms? I am rooted and about to try some Roms but don't really want to deal with flashing radios.

Why not? Its really easy. Check the development threads. No need for eng s-off.

I have used both the recommend radio for the roms and the att raido. They all work fine.
I'm thinking about making my own UI interface using photoshop and creating a launch as well. Is it something that is really easy to do? I'm a big Aliens fan (H.R. Giger, not that ****ty AvP movie bull****) and would love to make a custom UI or at least make sounds for when I press a button (thinking about when I shut down hearing Hudson saying "that's it man, game over man game over!")
I'm probably getting way ahead of myself seeing that I'm still new to all of this.
Which is the best rom or are they all essentially the same?

[Q] Why should i root?

I loved rooting my g1 and my mytouch slide 3g but i'm not sure if it's worth it with the sensation. i think the phone is great with the stock software and since it's already on 2.3.4, what are the benefits? it even has screen shot built in :/
please help!
The only thing that has me ever so slightly interested in rooting, is the Amaze camera mod, however I'm more inclined to sit tight and wait for an official update.
Having a Recovery based Backup through CWM and being able to backup with Titanium might be useful.
Also useful if you like removing bloatware.
.......
Mind you the phone works well as standard, so YMMV.
I like to root to have the newest updates.
In Swiss we had the problem that many branded Sensations had call problems (call aborted after one minute). A friend of mine had this problem, I with my rooted sensation not. So I rooted her device and flashed the newest Radio rom and the problem was gone...
You can also use the leaked Sense 3.5 Roms with a rooted phone ;-)
Look through all the threads in the development section and see all the things which you WONT get if you stay unrooted, all the things which you will miss out on, rooting gives you the ability to use programs which need lower level access than others, simply put you are missing out on a lot of features if you do not root, but hey no one has a gun to your head so make up your own mind, personally i find the whole rooting process worthwhile so i can flash custom roms and make my phone a better device to use.
The sensation on stock is a slow and underpar phone which could have been great, let down only by rushed development and poor handling of the code, if you flash a rom cooked up by one of XDA's dev's then you will see a huge difference in terms of performance and looks, there simply is no comparison.
Not rooted is like a computer but you are the user. While the rooted phone it acts like you are the admin you can do whatever you want to your precious phone.

I agree with all above.
I've rooted every android phone i've ever had, starting from the original desire.
It enables you to tinker with, and improve, on so many things. I also had incredible heat with my sensation on stock. I rooted it and it stopped.
I wouldn't even ponder the thought of keeping an android phone stock anymore.

But again if you need to ask...you No need to root

Should I Root my Evo 3D

I have had my Evo 3D for a couple of months now and I want to root it. My questions are. Should I do it? What are some problems if i do it? (example: when the evo 4g did not have 4g until they found the fix) What are some good ROM up there?
I rooted my Evo 4g and traded it for the Evo 3D,so I have very little experience.
Thanks if anybody can give me suggestions

The Evo 4G always had 4g. You may have been on a a rom that didn't have wimax (i.e MIUI)
As far as rooting your 3D...of course, if you enjoy the freedom of hotspot hacks, different themes, trying out the newest and coolest roms (i.e ICS), better battery life and many more reasons. If those things aren't important, don't root.
It is important, once you root your device and before you flash a new rom, that you make a nandroid(backup through recovery). It's nice to have something to go back to to update profile and prl.
Here is a thread you should check out for the latest and greatest roms, kernels, radios...

also don't forget about overclocking and such. I have just started getting into it but it is a definite plus to rooting!
Yes you should definitely root unless you like being a slave to phone restrictions and overall customization restriction or just having a generally boring phone.
Definitely, then you can find a JellyBean rom and not have to wait months for HTC
There are no disadvantages of rooting your phone, there are only advantages. However, Follow the safety instruction very carefully before you root your phone.

It depends: do you like hacking and tinkering with stuff? Are you computer-literate? Is your phone filled with crapware? Then yes.
If you're not really looking for anything other than to look cool then no.
I must tell you though, you can go down a rabbit hole pretty fast. First you root, fine. Then you install a custom ROM, that's not too bad. Then you start immersing yourself in this wonderful world of off-market apps and scripts. Then you realize you haven't slept in weeks because you're still trying to get that ****ing script to work.
