Introduction - Android General

Hello Everyone!
Just registered on XDA even though I've been using this forum for over a year...
I've been flashing ROMs for a while now and since my knowledge is getting to the point where reading other peoples problems to solve mine just wasn't giving me results any more I thought it would be time to start contributing and posting here myself!
Ciao for now, see you on the Sensation Forum

Thank you, everyone.

I want to say thank you to everyone here at XDA.
I don't post here very often, largely because a lot of my problems have been figured out by other members. I just experienced my first real problem when flashing a new ROM on my Captivate and didn't have one second of panic. I backed up properly before flashing and searched the forums enough to find all my answers I needed and even some that were a couple steps ahead of my situation.
So thank you, to everyone who has gone their way before me and provided useful feedback and to those who continually support everyone on the forum.
I second that. As a lurker,I have been through many ups and downs with flashing, but this forum has been nothing but top notch!!! Not quite sure how the saying goes, but my cappy has achieved greatness by standing on the shoulders of others.
Gracias!

that's great! I don't post much either haha but i do know that finding solutions or roms is never an issue on XDA

Community issues: Campaign for a fresh start

Hi guys,
You probably already know me from my other threads, mostly the support thread. If not, I would like to give a brief introduction: in june, I received an upgrade from at&t and decided to purchase the infuse 4g my first android phone.
I was thrilled with its performance, and the community started off strong. ROM's were coming out surprisingly fast, actually too fast for me to figure out which one I liked best.
I began to see that the developers threads were getting cluttered up with silly, often repeated questions, so I created a support thread to help lessen the load for the devs. I know it wasn't a perfect solution, but I helped build a small team of people who have been incredibly helpful so far, who I am beyond impressed with.
Now comes the bad part. Even my support thread, originally designed to avoid clutter, has become a landfill of lazy people who don't look for the answer to their question which has been asked and answered 30 times already.
All the devs have been subjected to so much bs that they are afraid to even release their work. Everyone flames everyone like crazy, but none of you guys can help the community. I am disgusted by most of your behaviors, and hope that you see how childish your arguments are.
Now, for my point: this community is still young, and we have accomplished so much already. We have the chance to have one of the strongest development teams out there, and a kick-ass community, in which we look out for each other's best interest.
I would like to propose a way to get things started again: we need a campaign to delete clutter/flame.
Neo works hard, but we need to help him out. Everyone, I urge you to look through your posts, find bad ones, and mark them in some way to be deleted. This is in order to resuscitate this potentially unbeatable community.
Thank you all, and I hope you understand my intentions

constructive crticism welscome
Moderator's(Neo) intervention was required as gtg's thread was going out of control.
as after his intervention members have started behaving themselves and Neo has removed/locked unnecessary threads this forum is at peace.
let the dead bury the dead and do not remind people again of what happened.
Just post relevant stuff and that is sufficient for everybody.
P.S.
if issues are not resolved then it never will be as no one will accept blame and any such thread will eventually result in blame game.
right now see that people are just paying attention to information, now calling them for campaign is also a distraction.

Hey, thanks for sharing your opinion with me in a respectful manner. However, I feel that the issue is not yet resolved, and the general forum is definitely the appropriate place to post it. The development is virtually at a standstill and I am not talking about gtg, but the other devs and would be devs who are now discouraged. I find that although your response was polite, it was completely inappropriate, especially considering what my original post stated. If you have an issue with my posts please message in private as opposed to calling me out/ racking up your post count.

I doubt the devs read half the crap, and know that most if the quiet folks really enjoy there work, and in no means are they scared to
release there work, but rather punish and don't release, which its necessary to shut alt of people up, can always find them on irc

I'm glad you guys are willing to help out in getting this show on the road. This can only be done by helpful members, especially the ones who read the rules and abide by them.
I think the main issue at hand is that people tend to speak their mind too often, in situations where a moderator should intervene. The best course of action is to report a post or PM a mod (for the Infuse, that's me ) and let them know what's going on.
I'm not on the board 24/7, so I too can miss stuff. But there are ALWAYS other mods who look after the Infuse forums when I can't, so reporting is the BEST thing you can do.
About "rebooting" the community: People are already getting annoyed by the lazy, demanding types, who don't use the search and just post another question which has been asked a million times before. Well, at least if it's in the Q&A forum, it's controlled. So that's our main focus for now: get people to ask their questions there, instead of the development or general forums.
This thread can stay open, as long as it's constructive criticism. All ideas are welcome, as long as it helps us out, right?

Neo just as you posted this I was editing my post in this thread.
I was concerned that this thread doesn't become a place for blaming other members or finding faults of others.as long as this stands for supporting devs my vote is there.
Right now I think forum is going well

I wasn't aware that there was a Q&A forum until you mentioned it. I'm using the xda app and have the SAMSUNG Infuse 4g as my favorite, but within that category, the Q&A forum isn't listed. I clicked onto the forum tab and scrolled till I found the Q&A forum. Yeah people can search for it, but I wasn't even aware that forum existed. I just suggest adding the forum into the Infuse 4g category. I think there will be less questions asked in the wrong section if it was listed.

To get the new subforum to show on the app you have to re-add the infuse forum to your favorites.

I think alot of people like myself are new android users. I knew nothing 3 months ago about Android then I got the infuse my first smartphone which seems like its a lot of peoples first android. So I admit I posted questions then went and found the answer when I got no replies. I think people just need to understand that this is very fresh for a lot of people. It was ridiculous on gtg's post but on the other hand people got so angry at othrs that knew very little.

And I think another reason why we see a lot of similar topics being posted especially regarding support is because new users (like myself) feel we need support about our specific situation, even tho we may have already read a similar thrend. Its happened to me were I posted help and either ill get a smart reply ie "its been posted 10 times already" or they may reply with a link. The link will be exactly what I've already read but, the thrend doesn't 100% pertain to my situation so I'm afraid I may mess up even more if I follow those steps (its actually already happened,my first brick) This is why we may see a lot of repeat thrends. I usually will encourage my support giver to pm me but I hardly receive any.

Why not have a separate section for rom support? I realize that sounds goofy but in the rom thread could be development related questions and in support section help and tech support?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
Well, xda-developers is for... DEVELOPERS. Although most people on xda are in it for the custom roms and leeching of apps.
I agree there should be some kind of a "noob sandbox" where new users can ask their questions and get answers from more seasoned users/devs. But how do you guys propose we do that?

Brief synopsis on basic rules and how to help the community

Hey everyone!
I have seen some things lately that really are bugging me, and I am hoping that we can fix this fast.
1) If you have a question and you want to post, please do a search in this forum first BEFORE you post!
2) Please EVERYONE, even if you have over a thousand posts and many thanks, READ THE RULES:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/announcement.php?f=1058
3) If you do a search and find something close enough to your problem, but not quite the same, then please try posting in that thread first and not create another new one.
4) STOP posting and asking about ICS twice a day in a new thread every time.
5) If you ask a question and several people give an answer, attempt it, before you jump back and tell them that thier answer is not what you are looking for. I have seen this all too much lately, and I am getting fed up. Those of us on here that have the knowledge and we give our time freely on here, so show some respect.
6) Don't hijack someone else's thread because there are a lot of people looking at it, and not the one that you posted. This shows a lack of respect to all of us here.
There have been a TON of these things going on in here, and I have seen how many of our more senior users are getting very frustrated just like I am. If you want to keep getting good answers from the knowledgeable people in here, do some research first on your own before making a new post with incorrect information, and please listen and try to think about these things once you are given an answer, and don't just throw it out because it is not what you expected to get.
Also Please thank anyone who gives you an answer to you, even if you don't like it. And stop posting thank you posts, that is what the the thanks button is for.
One last thing, I think everyone should watch this video and hopefully you will get the point. This one is more for people with less than 50 posts, and little contribution.

Well said Jim, as always. We have got to get this under control, and hopefully this will help. It's appreciated sir.
Sir, I refer you to Forum Rules, subsection 3;

Jim,
Thanks for taking the time to write this up. Hopefully, things will change. Did I miss something, though? I mean, was there a massive solar flare within the last couple of days thats caused people's brains to get fried? Noobs and members arguing, acting passive aggressively, disrespectfully, and stubbornly when other members or senior members try to steer them in the right direction? The whole attitude of this forum lately has become argumentative and hostile, albeit some of that stems from member's and senior member's frustrations with others not wanting to take a few minutes and a few simple steps in finding out answers on their own before muddying up the forum with new threads on previously discussed topics. It really needs to be stopped, and at the risk of sounding like a total prick, I may start reporting members who fail to adhere to the forum's rules and request a 24 hour suspension if I keep seeing it. We're all grown folk here, we need to act it by respecting others, and playing by the rules...
(Rant over)

I've been meaning to do this, but I knew it would cause me to go on a rant. Nice post, it should be stickied
Most of us are too lazy to go through the rules, but this is to the point, this should be stickied and even then someone posts a silly question, it should be simply ignored.

I was hoping the title would get some attention.
P.S. anyone that wants this to be a sticky please notify a mod.... I would, but it is my post, so that is kind of a no-no...
So can I flash ICS from China leak to my att atrix 2 LOL HAHA ..... +1 Thanks Jim well put.....
Jim, this is quite nice & I really appreciate when senior members respect Forum Rules by Mike - 2.1 & 2.5 & 10 besides the core stuff of course....I guess if someone is a repeat offender then yeah it would be no fun, Au contraire (i guess i don't get pulled up for using french) it would really make anyone who is not technically adept as Senior members think twice before even wanting to write in, in-spite after doing a search but has a different view or a question. In this case if majority of the members who yet feel the thread or post needs to be closed then yeah I guess MOD needs to be notified. I recall how you gave me some pointers on a much talked about topic & oh yes having a way of words surely helps all concerned.
Jim, I thought it was a shame yesterday when you were working so hard to bring us ICS and some guy called you an A-hole because he felt you should personally walk him through an install. It seems like more and more people think they are special/entitled.
Atrix 2 Wiki ?
Hi there, do we have a page for Atrix 2 where we could find all useful section like root methods, roms etc.
I know we have one for Defy (http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Motorola_Defy). Would be glad if we could have the same for Atrix 2.
Please let me know if there is already a page. I have searched but couldn't find it.
Edit: The link is there but its empty (http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Motorola_Atrix_II)

10 posts limit

Is there any chance to get pass the 10 posts limit and speak in developers forum? I go here often, but my last problem was three years ago and resolved in two replies. I don't remember that limit was in effect back then
Do I really need to write another 7 not usefull posts to get one simple answer in developer forum?

No you need to write 7 useful posts, try helping people in the QandA section etc.
This is how it is, there a very good reasons behind these rules and this thread will likely be closed so just move on and help others.

Okay, just let me think about this for a while... You are suggesting that a noob that has a problem should first solve some other problems and then he is allowed to solve his own problem?
Hm, since when is XDA only for the selected?
I have to agree with topic-starter.
I read much info before I even registered. I rooted my phone with the various threads, but then you have a problem/bug, and you can't address it in the dev-thread.
If some-one asks why there is a 10post limit, everybody says, help other people in the q&A topic.
As a very beginner in rooting/change rom's, you just can't help other people with much more complicated questions.
I'm on many forums, and usually such rule only results in more un-usefull spamming.
I don't have a huge problem with that. But I had a problem with a ROM, and instead of just asking it in the dev-section, I had to search a couple of hours in many threads to find a solution.

The key there is that you found the answer yourself after searching for a couple of hours. That is how people learn - it's how I learnt how to root, S-Off etc my HTC DS - by reading and trying to understand.
The Dev section is NOT the place for questions. It is NOT the place for questions. It is NOT the place for questions. Get the idea? The Dev section is for Development - genuine bug reporting and discussion by the guys who develop and test the ROMs.
I don't think 10 posts is enough. I personally feel that the Dev section should be by invite only. Once somebody has proved that they are able to abide by the rules of XDA and contribute in a meaningful manner then the Devs can invite them to join if they feel so inclined.

Well two things here, no If you have a problem you need solving you post it in the Q&A section in the first place..as this is where questions go Development threads are for development.
And XDA is and always has been about the developers, about developers sharing there work.
Yes, great... So developers have time to test other developers work? I would say that all the wannabe testers have hard time to feedback developers. They use emails. Developers say: use forum, it's great. And the usual answer is: I'm not over the limit yet.
I flash often, I test often. I find bugs often. I read ALOT. And when I find something no one has found yet.... I have to wait until an "experienced noob" (you don't really think number of posts indicate how experienced a guy is...) will write a bug report.
I got tired of waiting today and tried to step ahead but no... I have to make more comments to prove I'm worthy to speak with the DEV's... I'm no flamer and don't take this post like that but...
Posting a question in Q&A and hoping that one guy who might have my solution will answer... Maybe PM him and when he answers I will keep the solution to myself. Nah, too simple... XDA is for developers and developers always rely on people who test their night builds. Don't keep DEV's alone up there in the Ivory tower
PS: I would never dare to ask a question that was already answered here...
Yeah whats up with that
I have to have ten post before i can post my issue on the rom i downloaded that kinda bricked my phone. baha... i am swolt.. and to top it off i have to wait 5 minutes between post i guess it sucks to be a new user; but i am glad to be a part of the XDA forum team since i have been flashing every week for the past year or so... i joined after i ran into a problem go figure...

Its a case of thats just how it is, many devs have started threads in the general subsections for talking about the ROMs to reduce the issue.
The big reason for the limit is simple, with out it the dev section gets flooded with question threads, and general chit chat or basic questions which have been answered a million times end up in dev threads which should be kept clean for real feedback to been seen by the devs.
I know it sucks but it works, 10 posts is nothing, you will find if you look across the forum there will be plenty of threads you can give input to (For example there are loads of "which do you like more" type threads) which require no technical skill. You will very quickly get past the ten posts and move on

While regestering...... I was surprised to see..... Why this site demands toooo much to regester????
I guess too many noobs post to the wrong forum threads... I'm also a noob here. All I want to post is a bug in a ROM but those threads are only open to me after 10 posts.... This is number 4
Well..... I also wanted to comment in a thread. that is locked for me too. now just counting down from 10 to 1.
Hmm.....MHO is I never thought this site was too "demanding" just by making newbs watch a video on newbs......they want to try to keep some riffraff off the site......what's wrong with that?

Nothing wrong bro.... Never mind. I m a newby here, But I have some experience of working in other forum.... Unlike XDA, I never find huge amount of retraction.
Just some rules and guidelines to follow. Nothing to major. The video shows you how to find what you need so the same question is not asked a million times. It gets annoying as you may know from other forums when the answer to the question is 5 to 10 posts right before there's. We were all noobs at one point and in my opinion will always be noobs as everything changes so quickly.

Yeah... Obviously I respect the rules. But its too much annoying to put captua every time when I want to reply.
It's only ten posts.
Even if your dad taught you to repair cars since you were five and you learned how to drive when you were nine, they're still going to want you to pass a test to get a license.
Even though many professionals have gone to school for years and have degrees, they still have to take licensure exams.
Ten posts is not all that insulting or a big deal. I understand legitimate concerns, such as when disability makes this hard - but for a person lucky enough to be able to enter ten CAPTCHAs without having to get help, I don't think it's a big deal.

Its because there are many noobs who spam the forums/
Anyone who has spent time on a windows forum or the Ubuntu forums knows that moderating can be a full time job when people don't use the forum correctly. It makes the forum harder to use for regular users when there is a ton of spam. I work on phones and computers for a living, have been a dev for custom windows installations in the past. I want to learn this now. I appreciate the noob rule even though its a pain in my butt right now.
