[Q - SOLVED] OC Daemon Implementation - HTC Desire S

Hey guys,
I'm looking to learn how to implement the OC Daemon into custom ROMs which don't already make use of it (e.g. MIUI) and wondering if any of you could help with teaching me or pointing me in the right direction. I've done a couple of searches but turned up nothing so far.
Seeing as you're all so friendly in the Desire S forums , I thought I'd try here.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers.
(Also, you're not having deja vu. I asked this question a while ago in the Q&A forum but it died without a single response. I'm guessing this was because the forum's not so popular, but forgive me if it's rude to ask the same question again elsewhere.)
UPDATE (30/01/12) - Answer:
If you want to do it from scratch, look for the virtuous_oc source code - you can get it from the rmk40's github.
If you just want to use it in your own rom, it's quite easy, and you can take it from an existing rom (e.g. Endymion).
You need:
/system/xbin/virtuous_oc (the daemon itself)
/system/etc/virtuous_oc (the entire directory, containing the files that the daemon will read to get configured)
and some script in /etc/init.d/ to actually start the daemon. Then you can use OC/UV Beater to control the thing.
Take a look into this and I'm sure you'll get it. The idea is that the files inside /etc/virtuous_oc contain the max and min frequencies, as well as the governor, for sleep and wake states.
And that's it! I don't want to go into much more detail than that, because it's not that difficult and if you're really interested you'll be able to work out any missing details for yourself anyway.
Finally, many thanks to the much loved Lowveld for sharing this.

Hi. Welcome to the Desire S forums.
Lowveld has managed to incorporate the OC daemon and other scripts into Sense 3.5 ROM (Endymion). Maybe you can ask him (PM).
If I were you, i'd go after him...

If I ever find what I'm looking for I'll be back to update this thread. I'm sure this is the kind of thing a lot of people here would love to learn more about.

It's a form of integrated screen state frequency scaling (e.g. 1.2Ghz-245MHz/ondemand screen-on, 806Mhz-245Mz/conservative screen-off) which is more responsive and less prone to lag than using an app to control these values such as SetCPU.
Particularly useful if you have a different governor for your sleep state than you do for your awake state.

[q] [kernel] 3.2 oc?

Hi Guys
First up, I know this is the wrong place to be asking but as 3.2 has been out for a lil bit now and I know the people regarding this topic would be watching. I can't find anyone else within xda or outside attempting a Kernel for Asus TF 3.2, I'm simply asking why? (in a non-offensive, pushy way)
TBH I have no skills in the development of kernels, all I really want to know is if I can stop checking every day to see if someone has released a custom Kernel for 3.2 with OC ability or if one is in the pipeline. I just cannot find this info anywhere else and am simply interested.
Cheers guys, look forward to hearing from you.

there are
please look at the relevant threads and I expect you will get an infraction for this thread; you should have asked in Q&A
I think the reason your not finding anything yet is because the kernel source for 3.2 hasn't been released yet.
First of all if you know this is the wrong place to be asking this, then why are you asking it here? There is an OC kernel compatible with TF 3.2 made by Clemsyn. It is only working with Clemsyn's Rom and stock rooted 3.2 right now or at least that's what the post claims.
you could have asked it in the right place, and still get the same responses you got now...except all the lecturing. there's really no reason you should have knowingling asked this in the wrong forum.

Let's be 100% honest, it works, but not everything works well.
Until source for the newest ROM Kernel drops it won't be five nines reliable.

[Q] Endymion v3.3 - Control Center permissions..

Hello everybody,
I'm sorry to post this here, but it appears that I don't have enough post to be able to reply in developpement section...
This is a question regarding Lowveld's rom named Endymion v3.3 for Desire S,
and the installation of patched "endymion control center" apk from his thread's 2nd post ...
Why this app is requesting acces to "paid service" in android ? like sms and direct phone number calling ?
Can someone who can please post this question in Endymion Rom thread...
thx to all

Thanks Philos
Well, if it's asking for it, it's because I forgot to remove them. There's nothing in Control Center needing those permissions, but as I started the app from an HTC template, it was probably there in the manifest and I forgot all about it.
The only permissions the Control Center actually needs (I think, I don't have the code here) are WRITE_SETTINGS to store some global stuff used by tweaks, and the one to access sdcard, which I don't remember the name. Next version I'll remove the unneeded permissions.
By the way, that question was a bit paranoid on your part. It's sort of ok to doubt something downloaded from market or other sources, but you have to trust the dev which built your rom. The reason is, anything I include in /system, with any permissions whatsoever, will be automatically accepted by the android package manager process. Apps can be made invisible to the app drawer with no effort at all, etc.
Bottom line: there would be many other ways to screw you over without actually asking you to install something and having you agree on it.
Cheers
Hello to everyone.
Many thanks for your deep involvement in getting an answer to my question.
I feel sorry about the emotions engendered by this question and I must say it now because I did'nt already as I more of a reader than a poster...
"Muito Obrigado" Lowveld for your amazing work that I use since the first hyperion..
I'm still "*****in" with my phone every WE since 4 month because I cannot decide wich one of your 3 roms to keep for daily use...
I'm not a devellopper no an IT guy, just a "geeky tech enthusiast" like many. Getting knowledge from what I read/see on the interweb.
True that a bit of "paranoid" thinking forwarded my question, but the answer is satisfying and understandable, as well as the approval of all users community..
Please keep up the good work !
(and please update Hyperion wich is still the best, battery-wise & big-fingers-wise !)
with Kind Regards ..

Hey,
Don't worry mate, really no harm done! It was just that I spend lots of time doing stuff for these roms, and maybe overreacted a bit.
Thing is, to a new user, asking for those permissions can really sound suspicious, so thanks for the heads up. But I do hope people that have been following my work for the last months think better of me...
Cheers

And you wanted me to search for what ? "ICS" "kernel" "OC" .. yeah .. good luck with that.
And.. yes, no one has asked here in our threads being General or Q&A about OC'ing an ICS kernel .. what I did not know though, was the fact that you need a full kernel source in order to accomplish this. So, my question was answered .. thank you.

I disagree. We can't have senior members telling all the new users to search, and then because one can't be bothered to search Google for "skyrocket overclock kernel ics" we provide direct answers. Can't be using a double standard, its not fair.

1.3m results = nothing?
Also, when asking something like this, Google is great for finding a positive, but a negative (I.e. there is no OC kernal) is exceptionally hard to figure out without checking every search result.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 2
I answered the OPs question (the best I could) because:
A. The question actually appears in the Q&A section where such generalized questions belong. And...
B. The "header" of the thread clearly stated what the OP wanted to know. This will help in the future when others need to search for the information. This thread will most definately appear in a thread search for ICS Kernel OC, when other threads that this has been discussed in may not readily appear to.
So, Yes, it has been discussed, but by answering the question in this thread it (hopefully) will help keep it from being asked again and again and again... At least now there isn't an excuse about the info not coming up in a search.
First of all relax and clear your minds.
There has been a lot of flaming lately, which is definetively a bigger issue than nonsense threads opened up in our forums. So please, I beg you, if you have nothing productive to say, just dont say it and stay out of trouble.
It is a fair question, ok, but this thread (like many I have seen before) could easily become a sticky about "ICS Kernels for the Skyrocket" or something like that. Sadly, it will never reach that status, because, instead of the user having his question asked, and other members contribute with positive and constructive comments (<-----forum), it turned out a thread where it serves to critize each other.
Please think about the above before opening a new thread (your question has been probably asked and besides the search button there is reading, and reading, and even more reading) and replying to that new thread (replies insulting other users are even more useless than a thread with an already answered question).
Have a nice day.

[q] help from me on xda or in pm/gtalk ?

I help A LOT of people here on xda all day everyday some donate some don't. its very hard to help people on xda cus when helping them other people jump in and start either telling the person im helping don't do that do this or they just plain old spam. i have helped a very large amount of people on g talk and they have told me they like to be helped MORE on g talk than on xda because we have 100% full privacy to do what we need to do. please choose how you like to be helped Either xda or PM or g talk. at the end of the week ill count all of them up and from the results i will help people based on the results on this thanks very much.
To put the poll into better context I believe that you should also read this thread Although I've quoted the relevant posts below:

Hello, Paul,
Firstly, thanks (again) for your input into the forum. I'm genuinely not intending to create conflict here or trying to play the role of a mod. Now, I know that you've had this sort of comment before, but, I agreed with it then and I'm afraid that I still do.
While at times the PM route can be useful to resolve issues, it shouldn't be the only or primary option. The whole principle of XDA is openness and sharing, so resolving an issue in thread permits that the next user(s) (and there is always another, who suffers from the exact same problem) from hopefully using the Search function and then following the resolution from the thread by themselves.
That way we're working towards creating a valuable resource rather than loosing useful input into hidden PMs.
PM's do have there place for 'user to user' communication, that would otherwise populate the forum unnecessarily but once a thread has been created I believe that it should be used to reolve the original issue.
If a new user needs that much hand holding then one wonders whether they should be risking their £200-£400 device in the first place! before reading up some more....

me helping people over PM is better because its faster and more safer for the person im helping. if im trying to guide him then other people jump in and comment he isnt going to know who to listen to and he will get very confused. this has happend before. by helping over PM or my gmail is better for them, and me. and i ALWAYS ask them after to write a guide as to how i helped them and what they did. i at NO point mean to upset anyone. but you have got to understand that this is the only way that i can help these people as you may well know here on xda people have got there opinions and they like to jump in whenever they want. if i tell him to do somthing some1 might jump in and say no or do this and do that. i have had EVERYONE i have helped say thanks to me and its better this way. i have helped MANY people achieve proper s-off. i will no open a poll. and it will ask the people of xda if they would prefer to be helped via PM or Gtalk or on here. if more people prefer xda then i will start helping via xda

As someone whom Paul has helped through gtalk, It was very beneficial to me as we were able to quickly and easily communicate, as any other method is rather slow and crude. I definitely do agree with your point on xda being a repository for information however, therefore communicating through gtalk or similar could withhold information from other users. However I have now written up a short guide of what I did to solve my problem on the original thread, and I believe that if people do this then everyone wins tbh, and it has the added advantage of the treads being shorter and more concise, therefore it is easier to find the relevant information.
As someone who has done all his stiff by reading through threads and others opinions, I will always advocate all discussions on XDA

On the 16th the poll will close and whatever the winning method is thats the way i will help people from now on. i do wish ALL people will take something out of the way i help them. as me getting them properly s-off uses alot of things like commands running adb , fastboot and so on. by helping them do these things it then in turn helps them. as if i didnt help them and they needed to to adb or fastboot commands and they never knew howto that could result in a not needed thread being opened **How to use adb or fastboot** this is a good way for me to help these people. i think people should help people the way they do and let other people carry on with the ways they do things. ( no offence meant ben your opinion means alot to me your a good person ) but if it states in the rules ( only help people on xda ) then i will stop if it dont then i will carry on as im not doing anything wrong. and even so if you guys think your losing out on infomation. i will open up a guide covering absolutly EVERYTHING on the desire s from fastboot adb changing roms, splash, radio, hboot and covering everything on what the desire s is capable of doing. what limits it has and other things. this in a sense will be the desire s XDA user guide let me know if u think thats a good isea ben. and as i go along anything i help people out with thats not in the new guide ill just update it ????????????

Proposal to improve developers threads

Hi.
I'm just a consumer of the great roms on this forum.
I'm really grateful for all the hard work that allow me to get more out of this device.
I was just thinking that maybe instead of having a thread of the performance tests, those performance tests, if they're performed by the devs after they've readied it for release, could post it on the OP. Like updating it with each major release, so the flashers can also get an idea of the performance as they flash them. Danke schon.

Whilst I agree that that sounds like a good idea.
I believe that the developers do enough as it is. We each can assist in our own way and it surely better to let the developers cook, port and develop and the others run the performance tests and compile the results into threads.
Meaning that the developers get more time with which to develop, resulting in a better product for us all!
And more over we can get info on performance of Rom in one thread instead of going thread to thread.....
