Hi all,
I've been a happy owner of Vibrant for a long time. Now that I finally have a car, my need for a good gps functionality arises. I have 2 options here:
1/spend 50$ and trade in my vibrant to get the sgs4g from a guy from craigslist. Or
2/ spend 16$ to buy a gps bluetooth reciever off eBay.
Which way should I take? Does the gps receiver outperform the sgs4g gps? Or is it a nuisance to have the standalone gps receiver?
Give me your.opinions Thanks a lot

I think he's right. I personally would save, so by the time you have enough money to buy a GS2, you can buy the Galaxy S 3.
GPS devices are overrated. Seriously.
Íf you like flashing ROMs and stuff, don't. If you don't care, do. Enough said.
Using the mount on my windshield, I replaced my auto GPS device with my Galaxy S 4G. I recommend it.
Don't know nothin' 'bout no standalone receiver... sorry.
The samsung galaxy S 1 series have horrible gps signals. Period......
Android is better than gps devices. besides, majority of android devices have good quality good gps
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
My galaxy is much better than my TomTom. Better signal, more up to date maps.
I don't like flashing that much. That being said I don't like to stay on stock Rom either. It would be nice to have a stable rom and stays on it. Will it worth to give up my vibrant to go to the sgs4g. My main concerns are:
1/ the 4g has way less internal memory.
2/ how if the gps is about the same as the vibrant? Is the sgs4g gps a significant improve over the vibrant gps?
3/ how is the root process and changing roms on the sgs4g? Is it easy and unbrickable like the vibrant?
I guess I love my vibrant too.much that I don't want to part it. However I need GPS so bad....
Sent from my SGH-T959 using Tapatalk
My Galaxy S 4G locks on GPS in under 15 seconds. So yeah the GPS definitely works fine.
Though what I used to do before getting an Android was use MapQuest from my phones browser. It doesn't talk to you, but if you know where your going it works. And you could save for a Galaxy S3 that way.
But if you really want GPS go for it. Its a great phone, and as long as he's including the original 16gb SD card, memory shouldn't be a problem.
Oh yeah, easy to root, easy to flash. And as long as you don't try flashing a vibrant ROM (or any other phones) pretty much unbrickable.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
I don't know about the vibrant, but on my phone (sgs4g) I used something called angry GPS and my GPS locks on almost instantly most of the times. If I haven't used it in a while it might take 15 to 20 seconds.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
You can't install android in gps,
you can't txt in it
Install new rom
Tweak to your needs
My final word: Choose galaxy s 4g *No doubt!
I just recently broke my vibrant and am now using the sgs 4g and i can say the gps on the 4g is by far better than on the vibrant.
As far as rooting and flashing it is different...very different until you realize that you have to forget what you know about flashing on the vibrant....as much as it seems like your on the vibrant...YOUR NOT.
But it is easy and much like the vibrant...its pretty much unbrickable.
Personally i would stick with your vibrant untill your due for an upgrade and then get the next best phone .
Yeah. agree with you shortbus.
Anyway dude just save and use the money to upgrade when your contract is available for upgrade ;-)

Okay, stupid topic, but I have to ask. Looking at selling my Fascinate and taking an early upgrade to a Thunderbolt. Seems to be a completely solid device, and I would love to get an HTC back in my hands after a year of Sammy pains.
Looking to find out from the folks who've had it for a minute what their opinions are?

So far, so good. I haven't rooted mine, because I really haven't felt the need yet.
I'm coming from the Sammy Vibrant, and I loved the phone.
I like this one better. Much more responsive, and it doesn't fall prey to the lag issues, the primary reason I rooted my Vibrant in the first place.
I'd say go do it. Awesome phone.

I upgraded from a D1. I kinda miss some of the control I had over that phone, but the devs had a lot time to master that device. The TB will get there as well especially since a lot of devs & themers have the phone.
I rooted mine so I could remove all the bloat (~250mb of junk). I am running the latest RUU and with a custom kernel.
I have been very happy with the Tbolt. The battery life has been better than I expected.
It's a great phone. I'd recommend it!
I love it but why not wait. You made it this far. In a month or so there will be better phones.

The only things I miss about the Fascinate is the size/weight and the gps. I get better reception with the bolt and I love being able to use data while I'm on the phone. If the boro has coverage like Hinesville, you'll welcome the better reception.
I had a fascinate too. Yea Def make the switch. Battery isn't as good, but it charges quick it about 40 times less laggy and runs circles around it. I had many issues with the fascinate with this not so much.
I would get one on eBay and save the upgrade in case you dont like it on either an iPhone 5 or Bionic when (if) they come out in a few months.

Ha. I'm just ready to move on, and the feedback is helpful. There's really nothing wrong with the Fascinate, outside of it just feels chicky overall, no matter what.

+1 fascinate forums are quiet now!
I jumped ship too last weekend and so far I'm loving it. rooting it is quite a pain tho, the fascinate was definitely easier to root. My battery life is the same or better than the fascinate while rooted on comm rom. radio and gps is much better on the tbolt too, at least in my experience.

GPS on my Fascinate was instant and accurate - within 3-5 feet usually. On my Thunderbolt it takes at least a minute to get a lock and it's never even close to 30 feet. I guess I was one of the few people with a Fascinate that had great gps from the minute I got it...

yea, you were definitely lucky! as of community rom, and the ED01 radio, it took at least a minute to lock on (which was better than before when it would take 5 min to lock on). my tbolt locks instantly, even inside.
I used an early upgrade to get my t-bolt, and I love it! DEFINITELY go for it.
Well first off verizon is suppose to get an lg monster like tmo. Also id wait just too see what htc is pushing out. Then you do have moto actually talking about doing what sony is to there phones. Aka go online type your esn in and they give you a specific unlock code for your phone but voids warranty for anything not having to do with bad hardware.

Love my thunderbolt! I did come from an Eris tho so I am quite awestruck.
Another one of these threads, eh?
There are several others, FYI.
All in all, I would think, despite the shortcomings (battery, gps, kinks), that most people here are in fact happy with their Thunderbolt. There have been, in my opinion -- and in such a short period of time -- great strides in development on this device.
My personal favorites (in no particular order):
- Voice + Data simultaneously;
- Ample RAM;
- Strong developer support;
- A fairly vibrant (albeit not necessarily the best) screen;
- Plenty of speed viz. no lag;
- Made by HTC;
- Easy to root (thanks to those who tirelessly made it easy to do with adb);
- 4G LTE!
My personal grudges (YMMV):
- GPS location acquisition;
- Battery efficacy (but remember, this phone isn't just a beast, but it's a first-in-class);
- Random reboots (more kinks that will be worked out, I'm sure).
If I had it to do over again, I would still have bought the Thunderbolt!
Good luck in whatever decision you make.
Spotted this deal on craigslist. Comes with a car and home charger for $95 obo. looks clean in the pics. Might be stolen though, so I'm not sure if it's worth it.
What's your take, guys?
Thank you!
Yeah. It sounds nice

from price point its a good deal as long as you could make sure ... everything works.
from xda point of view I guess this phone is among the few that got most attention from devs so there is a lot of custom FW available for this little phone.
out of curiosity ... why do you want to buy an older device?
I am sure you have your reasons ... but anyways ... just asking
It's for my lady she played with a galaxy s 4g in a t-mobile store and liked it. she still has a nokia 5800 lol haven't heard back from the person, so... found a galaxy s 4g for $75 lol waiting to hear back as well.

Hello everyone! This is a question about GPS on the device, however I didn't see too many comparisons from previous Inspire 4G owners which is what I'm mostly interested in. However I invite anyone to join in this topic.
I currently have an Inspire 4G running CM 7.1 and have been debating on getting the Skyrocket.
Last week I went to Wal-Mart and upgraded to the OGSGSII, but took it back because the GPS wasn't working as well as my Inspire was. I had the Captivate before the Inspire and as most of you know the GPS was terrible and I didn't want to go back to that. I rely on GPS too much since I travel for work. Not to mention my new work phone is a OGSGSII that I just got yesterday and I didn't want to have two of the same device. The GPS on my work OGSGSII is functioning about the same as the one I took back from Wal-Mart.
So for those of you that have the Skyrocket, did any of you come from the Inspire? How's the GPS functionality on the Skyrocket compared to Inspire? For those of you not coming from the Inspire, please tell me your opinions too.
Thanks!!
Our inspire had horrible GPS
As a matter of fact we just returned from a 3 week road trip where we compared the 2 and we were soooo glad I had the skyrocket.
GPS can be hit or miss on Samsung devices but when it is a miss it is easy to fix

What is your all's opinions on what people are saying about the screen? Some are saying they see lines?
Sent from my Desire HD using xda premium
I had the HD2 and the Inspire. The Skyrocket has a better GPS than both. Hardware wise, my Skyrocket is better than my Garmin 3790! Now, if we could only get Garmin software on Android.
I'm not real happy with any of the GPS apps for Android.
Google maps is OK if you already know where you're going. It misses by a couple of blocks sometimes. The maps are accurate, the addresses for POIs are not. Also, Google Maps is not reliable at choosing the best, or even a reasonable route. No real POI import. Only useful with a data source. Caching works OK, NOT. Excellent worldwide map availibility, IF you have a data connection.
Co-Pilot's maps are only OK at Best. The text to voice sometimes says turn left when it really means right. POI import is a struggle at best. Limited worldwide map availibility.
Sygic is not too bad. POIs must use the same database as Google, because when it's wrong in Google, it's wrong in Sygic. The Vehicle Icon is WAY too big; Sygic says that will be fixed soon. POI import from Mapsource is doable. Good worldwide map availability.
Overall: 1 to 10
Garmin 3790
. Software: 9
. Hardware: 8
Skyrocket GPS hardware: 9
. Google Maps Software: 6.5
. Co Pilot Software: 6
. Sygic Software: 7.5

I get great gps compared to my inspire. I cabn get 10 or 15 satellite's while sitting inside, never could do that with inspire. I agree with what others here are saying, the GPS is outstanding. Of course, I came from a Captivate so navigating by star chart would be better than that thing. I do not have the screen issues that other post about, but i have seen the pictures and it appears some phones do have serious screen issues. I am still amazed at the LTE speeds, cant go back to HSPA+ ... Good luck.
I get faster gps lock inside my house with my skyrocket than i did outside with my inspire. Everything on the skyrocket is smoother and faster than the inspire
Sent from my SGH-I727 using xda premium
I can vouch for the GPS too. I came from the Captivate (had to get a bluetooth GPS receiver dongle for that POS because I travel on business frequently to cities I've not been to before).
Skyrocket got it right. Locks in seconds and tracks spot on. I haven't been to an urban area like NYC or San Francisco yet so no idea how well it works in those canyons.
^^^+1...came from Captivate, I use the GPS on my Skyrocket daily and am constantly in awe of how spot on it is.

Long story short: I am on my third Infuse with constant dropped calls. ATT has now offered to replace my phone.
Any thoughts on what to get. I think my options are:
Atrix 2
LG Nitro
Captivate slide (really miss the physical keyboard)
Skyrocket
S2
The Nitro and Skyrocket seem to have some pretty stellar reviews.
I think the Atrix still has a locked bootloader.
The Slide has the keyboard I have been missing since I got the Infuse.
And the S2 has a smaller screen
Any thoughts on any of these phones?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
Definately Skyrocket
Captive slide feels cheaply made its very light even with the battery in

From what I've read, all Samsung devices using the Qualcomm chip instead of the Exynos have screen tuning issues. Either way, I would take an Infuse first and the SGS2 second.
wow, no one is giving any love to the nitro. the more reviews I read, the more I am liking it. anyone care to elaborate on the reasons for the s2 or rocket instead of the nitro? reviewing the specs, the nitro seems just as tricked out as the others and even better speced on several fronts. not trying to start a war, just trying to figure out how to best take advantage of att's "generosity".

I'm wondering if there's something wrong with the network where you are - does it always drop in the same place?
No one else has had the problems you have had, and for it to happen with three devices says "network" to me.
I never had a problem with dropped anything while driving - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0011GI94Q means it's extremely rare to ever have less than 3-4 bars anywhere when behind the wheel.
(I live in the boonies - I often go through areas where no phone ever has coverage, but with the Wilson I'll still usually have 3-4 bars in those places. It has more than exceeded my expectations.)
Before I put my foot forth and my wallet would like to know how you guys enjoy this phone. I was reading around about this SOD is it really that bothersome and common??

Pretty hard to brick, great phone for the price. Cwm makes easy nandroid and allows you to select how you want it saved. Sods are almost non-existent anymore. On ICS I don't think there is any sods. But I've been running test kernels for a week now for jellybean based ROMs and I think there's light at the end of the tunnel. All in all get it if you can't afford an s3. I personally like it better than the s3 because of the size.

Thanks, yeah I don't like phones higher than a 4.3 screen size. After that it feels like a mini tablet lol. So this is perfect with power, I don't think the s3 is all that necessary in Android yet. Plus I live in NY you always have to be looking if you know what I mean haha.

I just checked at best buy and they currently have the s3 at 150 with 2 year agreement my question is have you guys ever tried buying through best buy? Does your plan change in any way after you guys have done this? Tmobile always tries to make it impossible for their customers that's why I ask these things. I see it as a good investment worse comes to worse down the line I can just opt out and pay 200 penalty and I would still have my s3.
