Samsung Epic 4G owners who have converted their phones to MTD partition layout can "flash" this in MTD recovery. It temporarily boots CWM5 BML, allowing you to flash modem upgrades without wiping your phones back to BML layout. You may safely ignore the error messages when this CWM starts. This CWM is not written to your phone, so the next time you run recovery it will be MTD CWM.
Requirement: Your CWM recovery kernel must support kexec. CM7 kernels nightly 12+ support kexec.

Interesting, thanks for the heads up.

It is temp booting into this recovery with kexec. IIRC there is also a way to kexec from a PC over USB if you mess up your kernel/cwm.

Step 1: Boot into the installed (MTD) recovery (3 finger, reboot menu, terminal command - whatever is your preferred method).
Step 2: "Flash" this file (it doesn't actually flash anything, just runs a script that tells the phone to load a different kernel, just like Rom Manager's recovery that boots from the sd card as opposed to being installed in internal memory)
Step 3: flash a modem update, etc - you are in a BML recovery, so use common sense... wait, that will only help 10% of experienced users (just don't do anything that interacts with the internal partitions, aside from the modem - it will most likely just error out, but if it doesn't then it will probably mess up your MTD partitions)
Step 4: ????
Step 5: Profit!
It really is that basic and simple.

flashing a modem is just like flashing anything else in cwm.
pick one up from the following thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1117331
put the zip file on your sd card root. go to cwm (im guessing you have the red cwm), go to install from sd card, choose zip file, choose whichever modem you want, flash it, go back, reboot. and you should be good.
Go to cwm make sure you mounts are good. mounts just to make sure unmount mount mount unmount. Then just flash the zip file of the modem you want. You can find the modems in the Bible thread.

Glad I scrolled through and found this...
ICBINB KH2 left me with the vanishing SD card, i was looking for a fix for that problem when I found this... at least I should be able to get back on Black Ice for now.
Followed the steps, so no clue what happened, but it did... and I couldn't get my compie to recognize the phone to Odin back like I usually would... Recovery wouldn't come up like usual either...
One 5 second read here and I'm back on Bali 3.3, and restoring my last Ice nand...

so does Gingerbread actually run with the Bali 3.3 kernel then?
or is it just so you can use the recovery console, and you never actually boot the phone? so you would need to immediately flash a GB kernel after this?

You need to flash kg4 cwm kernel after restoring your GB nandroid. If restoring froyo, I always reflash Bali after restore. All this done in recovery. Don't let the phone boot up until you reflashed the kernel.

Yeah, I thought GB doesn't mount the system, so a GB NAND backup can't be made.

When booting up (by pressing power button, and when I connect it to charger it boots up by itself) the phone goes straight to CWM Recovery. I've tried everything, nothing works.
When in CWM everything seems to work fine: I can flash the ROM or do backup/restore.
I tried going back to stock - same problem. Can Not boot to OS.
PLEASE HELP!!!
Just to clarify on understanding your issue, when you boot up the phone by pressing only the power button your phone goes into cwm instead? While in cwm when you select reboot does is just stay in cwm? What version of cwm are you using? If I were in your shoes, I would reflash cwm with nvflash and go from there.

Sounds like you need to NVFlash CWM.
Did you use ROM Manager to flash CWM?
Appears you flashed CWM to the boot partition, not the recovery partition, which can happen when you use ROM manager.

The answer to all of these questions is "Yes"
The CWM Recovery I used is 5.0.2.0, but I tried other versions too, same results: reboot to Recovery just by pressing power or "reboot' from CWM.

I would next than suggest using the scrubber/nullifier, followed by NV flashing the stock rescue package, than follow back up with NV flashing CWM and than your ROM.
This should rebuild all partitions and than rebuild from scratch.

I tried to reboot the phone, and now its in boot loop.
Is it safe to flash CWM Recovery(v5.0.2.7) now ? And then restore from my backup?
If you made the backup with a different version of CWM the backup will not restore. You have to use the same version to restore the ROM as you did to make the backup.
Yey!!! It worked! :victory::victory::laugh:
Flashed NV Flash----->Flashed CWM 5.0.2.7----> and then restored from my backup. Now my phone is as it was before.
